The video is processing, and should be up and running soon!
Meanwhile, the SPC has issued a moderate risk for the western Great Lakes...Looks like a widespread straight-line wind event. I'll be posting about this as it materializes.
Hey reed Great Videos! about the great lakes event today. do you think it will be more of a straight line wind even early in the storms life or later once it probably would turn into a line because i live on the west side of the moderate risk and i wouldnt mind seeing some wind today. 2 days ago we saw 40mph winds, and that brought down some trees wouldnt mind seeing 60-70mph
Thanks, Greg
Nice video, I hope you had some fun down there.
WOW! Nice music! Everyone in the studio stopped to see what I was looking at!
Hey Greg,
It will likely be more of an MCS/line type event, with strong straight-line winds. There could be a brief cellular mode early on, but straightline winds will be the main threat with these storms as well. Let me know if you get some good pictures!
Great video Reed!!! It was worth the wait! Keep me posted on our storms.
great job guys...its to bad dean didnt quite go the way you wanted to him to go, but you still mananged to take a gnarly video, stayed safe, learned alot and most importantly, made it home. cant wait for the next one...!
Ya i was wondering if anything nice would happen today for me but it doesnt look like much of anything will happen
hey reed great videos....shame bout it not hitting
looking good for same hail over nabraska later on today and also for some decent wind over the great lakes
great job guys! awesome intro! im pleasantly suprised :D
Your video shows that your trip was absolutely worthwhile, guys. But, I must say that I am highly, highly disappointed that there were no AAAAAAAAAAAs during your seaside footage. Please remember this for next time.
Was that intro music Bruckner? ... And the dude at the end, well ... that was FANTASTIC. You ought to use that ending on all of your videos from now on! :-D
Ya i must agree with Heidi the dude at the end was hilarious.
hey erm just to say that there is a tornado warning in pennsylvania
heres the link if anyone wants to check it out...... http://www.weather.gov/view/national.php?prodtype=tornado
Yeah Heidi...it's Bruckner's 8th. My favorite movement of all time. I think we need to add that to the beginning of every video...the problem with the Dean video, is that it's all downhill after the intro!
Storms in Illinois are looking pretty strong. Here in Ohio after 5.87in of rain at my house since Sunday it is 95 with a heat index of 104.
...cold core... tornado watch up here in red deer...
tornado warning in lincoln IL..... strong rotation in the storm could produce about 5 miles away from castleton and is moving east at 60 mph
Reed, that is amazing - Bruckner's *9th* is my husband's all-time favorite! We don't even have the 8th in our collection, but, as with most compoasers, there are a lot of the same signatures in all of Bruckner's stuff, so I thought that intro had to be one of his. - I know what I'm looking for when we go to Wal-Mart in a while! :-D. That's awesome!
I can't believe I just wrote "compoasers." :-D Ha-Ha! I guess it could have been worse though.
oh ok reed! thanks well all of our storms have been at night so i havent really got the chance to take any pitcures i have a video camera but i dont know if or how to get the tapes on my computer can anyone help me or is there a certain type of video camera for the computer..
Oh, I forgot to say that Cors and I were chatting, and we thought that smt ought to get us some storm footage for today, since that's where the mod. risk area is! :D
I might say upall night to film a storm that is suposed to come thought later tonight and into the morning.
Hi Brandon, was wondering if you saw that :)
12:46 PM MDT Thursday 23 August 2007

Are you going to be out observing today?
I did'nt know there was a tornado watch!!! I was at school so I did not know! anywho
I bet you and joel are tired Reed LOL..... but now there is a svr thunderstorm watch!
hey PB...i see that line of precip/storms moving southeast towards red deer...im not going out of my way today, but im definetly going to keep my eyes open when this comes closer to the city...i guess theres been funnel reports near bowden...are you heading out?
another tornado warning in illinois ... strong rotation in a storm near malta
Great video! I REALLY liked how you stayed in line with the palm tree! GOOD JOB!
theres been a touch down 9 miles west of edmore and is moving east at 35 mph....the tornado should be at edmore by 3:40 pm
Brandon, not far to go today, it's coming to us :)
I'm going out to sit on a nearby hill and watch for tubes.

Hey Reed here is the URL to one of those warnings
http://www.chicagotribune.com/
OMG chicago is about 10-20 miles away from a possable tornado.... i am very shure there is a tornado on the ground!!
caleb: how can i see where a possible tornado is cause at the moment im just going on warnings
well look at the hook on that storm...... I bet all of the news rooms on all this there!
Wow.... Awsome videos Reed!!! You guys did a great job down there even though the hurricane shifted veers. That dude at the end cracked me up!! hehe. Any way well done.
Btw, the weather here is warm and WINDY.
Ya the hook is a good start to know if theres a tornado. Ill try and find a picture to show you.
the picture on the left is a good view of a hook.
http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/transformations/weather/image1_650.jpg
how can i find a way of seeing the hook on radar i cant find anywhere is there a ink please?
Matt that is the may 3 1999 storm.... not todays!
The storm in MI looked interesting initially...I'd still say straight-line winds are the main threat with these storms. They look very bow-echo-ish. I wouldn't mind being up there though!
heres a link for a look at the storm going over chicago
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=lot&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=no
Hi Reed - I am not going to yoga tonight so I can stay home and take some photos when the storms come. Chicago has damage - windows blown out and tractor trailers tipped over. Call Dayna - she is near Hammond where they are headed. This line is due here later so I will keep an "eye to the sky". Just hope the power stays on! Cortney is all excited too. Call us if you have any info!!!!
Reed, you were asking about that HurricaneJosh guy, who rode out Dean in a hotel in Chetumal just south of the eye. He hasn't done a photo dump yet but here is his write-up (click name)
It was interesting that he mentioned the "tightness of the wind field." Maybe that's why the damage was so limited for such a strong hurricane.. Sounds like he had a tough time trying to film anything in the darkness too.
yeah Reed i think there is a dereacho set up!
Yeah that's typical with hurricanes...the wind will increase exponentially over a localized area within 15 or so miles from the eye in the eye wall. Imagine adding 50+ mph to our wind speeds in the video. It would have been INSANE! Probably something like James video!
Hey reed 2 tornado reports in the last 30 min!
CONFIRMED TORNADO TOUCHDOWN NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF VICTORYVILLE RD AND CUTLER. MINIMAL DAMAGE TO SHEDS WAS REPORTED. (GRR)

well look at the hook on that storm...... I bet all of the news rooms on all this there!
He ask how is a good way to see if theres a tornado and u said the hook so a posted a picture of a hook to show him what a hook looks like. I how it wasnt from todays i was just showing him what a hook looks like.
Oh ok I see now....... jacobs my bad!!
ah its alright lol wouldnt worry
Hey everyone, what's up? Looks like a busy day in Michigan!
Great video Reed and Joel. Awesome as always!
There was a hurricane a few years back - Reed you probably remember which one - and there was a photo of a devastated neighborhood, but embedded in the damage there were also "tracks" of higher destruction. What causes that? I know in a large tornado there can be suction vortices, but was wondering what in a hurricane can do such a thing.
Well joe it may have been a large multi vortex..... let me see the photo.
theres a tornado warning for bay county ... dopplar radar showed the tornado located near bay county moving east at 25 mph
Man im hoping that cell makes it over Lake Huron. but probably not asfdklasdfhadokfl;dksa
the speed its going is not going to hit me until 5 in the morning
michigan is geeting alot tonight ...another warnings has ben issued 9 miles west quanicasse with the storm moving east at 25 mph
They evacuated the control tower at O'hare aiport when that storm came through. there were tornado warnings. O'hare closed...what a mess!!!!!!!
Also tornado in central Iowa.
My sister's in Hammond, IN and reported shingles ripped off the roofs and power outages, as well as windows blown out in spots. Textbook bow echo action up there.
Joe: Just like with tornadoes, there are smaller vortices embedded within the eyewall of hurricanes...Significantly higher wind speeds are associated with these micro-vortices, just like with suction vortices of tornadoes. They were "well documented" in Hurricane Andrew, with the same smaller-scale paths of greater destruction. I'm guessing they occur because of the substantial shear and upward motion in the vicinity of the eyewall, as well as flow instability. Very interesting.
Where did everybody go.
lol still here.... is there anything going on at the moment ?
Andrew - that was the one! I remember the photos were quite striking, with long swaths of houses that were extra-devastated compared to the ones next to them.
yeh i remember seeing those pictures..... just really like a multi-vortexed tornado
Ahh... central and southwest Kansas is in a severe t-storm watch :D Awesome news.
AJ.....whats a t-storm nt sure on most things? still learnin lol
Tim, T-storm, means Thunder storm! Just a shorter version!
ah rite lol cheers...so used to readin tstm just got used to that lol...cheers :D
Well one good thing about this set-up is that it looks like Ohio isn't going to get any rain...
... and silly me. Why was it again that I expected the Wal-Mart Supercenter to have ANY classical music selections, let alone Anton Bruckner's 8th Symphony? (Reminder to self: YOU LIVE IN THE OZARKS!!!)
In other news, there was a sale on pork neck bones.
Sounds like a classy party Heidi ;)
Yeah, I'm also learning stuff all the time Tim. It's always new and different!
Looks like a minor cold front moving through my area... some storms to my east and NE, but nothing worth going after. Maybe rain...?
Reed - Dayna said Chicago is like the "Day After Tomorrow". HEAVY rain, lightning, thunder, floods, gas leaks, power outages, trees fallen on cars, etc. She is going to take photos and send them to you when the lightning stops.
Umm ... I hope I didn't speak too soon about Ohio not getting any rain. :-/ That second, ahem, MCS coming out of Illinois looks like it will probably get there. Not good.
haha, Heidi that was funny. I called a large department store up here to find out if they had any telescoping fishing poles - the kind you pull open like a car antenna, they are great for backpacking. The employee in the sporting goods dept asked me in all seriousness, "Is that a fishing pole with a scope on it?" lol
I had to Google to find out about the black witch moth and the hornworm that you & smt were talking about last night. Thank goodness for whatsthatbug.com! (a rather cool site)
AJ, was hoping you could deploy today. There was supposed to be some action in eastern CO / western KS.
Severe thunderstorm for Chatham-Kent area. Storm appears to be exhibiting a nasty outlook. Looks almost supercellular in structure. That and it got cold FAST. I mean 5-10 degrees fahrenheit.
Hey Folks! just got home from another day at the shop!!
Did I miss anything good?? Nice vid's!! I don't think I've seen wind like that!! But them waves!! Great chase guys!!
Hey Brady! There's some crazy weather out there, including some relatively near me.
Joe, it's hard to deploy when you have to attend school ;) I wish I could have also, there's reports of large hail, 70 mph winds, etc in central Kansas. If I wanted to catch any really good rotation action, I would've had to have left this morning for Colorado. I wonder if that would be extra credit in my science class... hehe
Yeah, School and work can get in the way of good chasing!! I know the feeling!!
Reed if you want the storms that hit central illinois. in the streator/ottawa area(15miles from each other) i was able to gather some pictures. More of the fronts then anything. i was following the storm to almost dwight before i headed back and decided nothing was going to happen. After calling another fellow chaser. As I entered back into town the weather radio started going crazy for The kankankee illinois for a tornado warning and tornado on the ground. the weather radio continues to go nuts as i write this. Anyways, the fronts on these storms I think are impressive. Last Week while i was leaving work I was able to get some o.k. to decent quality pictures off my camera phone of a shelf cloud. if you want to see anything of these pictures i'll be happy to email them to you let me know!
-mike
by the way i will put some up on my facebook. i'm sure you'll see the update on there as well.
Joe, that insect site is helpful and interesting, but it makes me feel buggy, for lack of a better term ;D
Also, Wal-Mart employees are the most fun to pick on, especially when it comes to oddball items like that pocket fishing pole. You all should NEVER to with me to a store, I make a total ass of myself ;D
Has anyone else noticed that Chicago's radar is messed up? It looks to be several loops behind. Compare it to Ft. Wayne's and you'll see what I mean. I wonder if it got damaged in Chicago???
Ya why cant i have been interested in this stuff while i was still in high school. Woulda made an awesome science project like u said AJ.
Heidi, I don't doubt it. Chicago caught the brunt of that storm in particular. It just reminded me more of Monday's supercell over my house.
I have a rather large ball of goo headed straight for me... and it looks rather thick... :(
Joe, what I want to know is, like, can you like see Mars and stuff with that pole too? 8-D
There was also a sale on bagged, chopped & washed turnip greens.
Matt, I could make it a science project, or a project for my broadcasting class, where I get to play with digital Canon video cameras :D I bet a photographer from our school newspaper would go with me on a chase...
looks as if there is some decent weather over there now....decentstorm just bout to go over OK
AJ, you must have an awesome school.
Im watching the storms over Lake Huron right now to see what there going to go and to see if its worth staying you all night to film the light snow.
It should be light show*
High school is way different from what I remember... and I'm only 26!!
we barley had internet and I'll be damned if I knew a computer back then!!
When I think about my high school days i pretty much thought its was a waist of time, for other reason because i know that u need a education to do anything in this world.
It's been very interesting to see the cells on the south end of this line in Illinios & Indiana do what they so often do. There's one in Livingston Co IL (to the west and south of the current tornado-warned cell in Kankakee Co.) that's starting to rotate on the radar loop, too. ... That phenomenon has a name which is escaping me right now ... AAAKKK!!! It would be helpful if I could think of it. It's that training effect, but it has a name - what is it? It's not "Tail End Charlie" that I'm looking for either, but the technical term ... SOMEONE HELP ME!!! :D
Freudian slip there, Brady? "barley"
803 PM...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR INDICATED STRONG
ROTATION IN A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO
13 MILES WEST OF CONRAD...MOVING EAST SOUTHEAST AT 30 MPH.
yeah Joe!! Bud light slip!! hehe
Close up video of funnel from Chicago. Was put up 2 hours ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1moaatUOXY
PS: there is a handy feature of GR3, for those who haven't found it yet.
Normally you can't see the names of any cities until you zoom in pretty far, so it's hard to figure out where things are in relation to certain towns.
However, for each radar site, you can select which towns will "always show" at any zoom level. Click on GIS - Settings - Show Always List, then select letter of alphabet, scroll down to the right state and click "add." Very helpful!
That video ought to be called "How to get yourself killed during a tornado". To think, that guy's last words could have been, "What's everyone so worried about ... well, I hope we don't lose power ... see this is all a tornado is, give me a break. Big whoop..."
how cocky can you get..the guy in that video gees...well said heidi
hey will you look at that lol....that guy gets another chance to try and kill himself....tornado warning over chicago
Cockiness will get you hurt or killed in my neck of the woods. You can say it won't touch the ground, but instead of "knock on wood", it's "knock on dashboard and be prepared to ditch in a millisecond!"
Yes Heidi, I have a very awesome school! Garden City High School, you can look them up.
I have two interesting line of storms to my east and SW, moving west and NE. By the looks of it, they will probably congeal into a pretty big line. Nothing severe though... nothing is going off on my SwiftWX anyway... maybe someone with gr3 has something different...?
UPDATE: TORNADO JUST CLIPPED MINOONK, IL IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS. 2 SEMI'S OVERTURNED. NO REPORTS ON DAMAGE TO MINOONK ITSELF. MINOR INJURIES TO THE 2 SEMI DRIVERS. I will be sure to give updates as they come in. ANOTHER LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MOVING EAST THROUGH BURLINGTON, IA INTO ILLINOIS. Its pretty wild here in central illinois tonight!
AJ, this is what GRlevel3 currently shows for your town. What do you make of this? It's hard to interpret all of the official meteorological symbols.
http://i16.tinypic.com/6hdgrvp.jpg
LMAO!!!....great pic joe lmao:D
storms tonight streching all the way from new mexico up into southern ontario...very impressive...!
Joe ... oh, nevermind. - First the giant hailstones, and now this! 8-D
how long before there is a decent tornado produced....with these storms lining up as they are the just feeding of the waste left over from the storm infront
heres a link for the doplar radar for america....its showing the storms currently.... worth checking out i think
ss forgot to give the link lol here it is.... http://www.weather.gov/radar_tab.php
Hey Reed!
Awesome video mate, looks like you guys had great time. Jamaica looks like a cool place too!
Chasing hurricanes is not easy! For Sepat we had to make a last minute 35 mile dash south at 2am (landfall was at 5am.) I wasn't driving so I was the one staying awake all night checking radar updates - so was running on 5 hours sleep in 60 hours!
Reed, I hope your fam got some photos of this evening's event. This is amazing - it keeps going and going and going ... (insert Energizer Bunny reference here)
More fun from Tuesday night's storm in SD. I know I know I keep bringing it up but anyone who was watching radar might appreciate these photos. Looks like it missed WORLD record hail by about .75 inch diameter. Nuts. The divots in the ground are completely out of control, and there were reports of hail punching THROUGH car hoods. Now that's just insane.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/fsd/?n=hail2007aug21_dante
More nuts stuff from Chicago tonight:
Check out the video on this site featuring the Sears Tower getting absolutely tatooed by lightning.
http://www.myfoxchicago.com/myfox/
"The Plow" moving through downtown, the rain shaft is incredible!
http://tinyurl.com/2vcwmj
This is what comes from a long night of boredom...
found this site tonight, check out the "sprites" or "gigantic jets". Never heard of them but amazing clips.
http://www.spaceweather.com/
Hey James...that video was incredible. It was a great decision to reposition. For future chases, we're definitely going to work on staying mobile...although it would be impossible to drive in jamaica. They drive like maniacs down there! We passed 5+ cars narrowly missing head-on collisions several times. That was more intense than the hurricane.
Haha Reed I know what you mean about insane driving. Chinese traffic is like a weapon of mass destruction.
There's an invest south of Okinawa at the moment but I'm hoping nothing brews till after the beginning of Septemeber since I have to be in Hong Kong for 5 days from 29th.
Wpac is still about 5 storms behind average. Had 8 so far. September and October should be good then from mid October onwards I be watching for Supertyphoons lining up the Philippines!
I am from Tazewell county, and i made the trip up to near Wenona IL, for the first line of storms...Let me say that it was awesome structure...as we expierienced 70-80mph winds.
The errie thing is...it was sooooo windy, but wasnt raining at all...We managed to paraell the storms...staying on the south/east side of the line for a short time, before we were overun, by the fast moving line.
Hats off to all the spotters out there today...heard TONS of people on the radio. Kept everyone right up to date.
The local news is reporting winds of up too 100mph in Galesburg IL, which is near the IA border.
here is the link: http://www.week.com/news/local/9345881.html
My brother in chicago, had a tree fall on his car, luckily he wasnt in it. And luckily his insurance will cover it.
Hey Andrew..Spaceweather is a great site...especially during Northern Lights season.
Thanks for the links!
That sure is a cool website and that gigantic jets video is amazing.
WOW!! nice vids Reed and Joel!!! That must have been amazing to witness!
Mean while i was down south looking at Geothermal activity!!! Found a massive gyser in the midle of now were near the lake that was about 1meter square with a mass of boiling water inside. It was pretty wicked!!
I know this isn't weather related but...
IT'S STEVE IRWIN DAY ON THE 15TH NOVEMBER SO GET ON THE NET AND SUPPORT WILDLIFE WARRIORS!!!! AND PROTECT THE WILDLIFE AROUND THE WORLD FOR THE YEARS TO COME!!!.
Steve Irwin passed away almost 1 year ago (Sept 4th). He really was a great man. Met him when i was in Ozzy!!!
Hey Reed...how do I submit a photo to you for display on the site? I have some cool lightning shots from ths storms across northern Illinois tonight!
Hey, MynameisBen. Where in tazwell county are you located? I'm in woodford county. That storm earlier was wicked! I got a report that a tornado touched down by Minonk, IL. 2 semis overturned.
I'm in McClean county!
I'm from southern LaSalle county!
Well, another county heard from.
(always wanted to say that!)
Im from Simcoe County. In Canada that is...
No tornados?
Speaking of Hurricane Andrew, it was 15 years ago today that that beast roared ashore in Florida.
http://cbs4.com/local/local_story_236093634.html
andrew...that link is awesome...! that hail is HUGE. it was fun virtual chasing that night too...haha...matt...did you get any action last night? storm action that is! haha
when will the membership thing be activated
I live just North of Mackinaw... when we seen the storms cross the river, and warnings posted counties in advance, we took off north. through Eureka To 116, and the followed 51 up. From our viewpoint, we didnt see much rotation as the storms moved through our general area, however once the storms passed, as we were under the shelf...we noticed better inflow, and possible rotation. However the storms were moving to quick to the NE, we soon turned around and headed back.
Funny thing is it tooks us 45-50minutes to get up there, and an hour and a half to get back.
Everyone ready for today? Moderate risk...Conference calls for Emergency managers has just started, And i wouldnt be surprised to see a locally enhanced tornado threat as the sfc low nears. I will be out.
Hey Chris...please email them to reed@tornadovideos.net along with the copyright watermark you'd like on there.
THANKS!
Looks like another severe weather situation along the front today, except further south. Maybe even in OK!
Are u chasing today Reed???
