Here is a visible satellite of Cat 3 Dean moving over land:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night:
Dean was officially upgraded to the first Category Five hurricane of the 2007 Hurricane Season

As of the 11pm update with the NHC, Dean has winds of 160 mph, with higher gusts. The winds could actually be higher. We will find out in a couple of hours with the next Hurricane Hunter flight.
This year the Hurricane Hunters have a new instrument called a Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer, also known as SMURF. This allows an instantaneous measurement of surface wind speed by measuring sea foam! The radiometer is attached on the wing of the WC-130J's and also measures rainfall rates.
Unlike a dropsonde (the instrument that is manually dropped in the storm to get a vertical profile measurement of the atmosphere) the radiometer stays in place through the flight.

Reed will be back online tomorrow with more Dean updates, included footage from Jamaica!

The eye on dean is nuts, defiantely the strongest its been yet! The convection around the eye is rediculous. I wouldn't be surprised if the pressure is lower and winds are even bumped up further in the next outlook. Just hope there isn't many people left in the path. The island of cabo norte is right in the path and will hit in the next 2 hours.

This is going to hit the Yucatan stronger than Andrew in 1992... the pressure with Andrew at landfall in S. Florida was 922 mb (just to put it in perspective). The pictures tomorrow are not going to be good.

Winds remain 160 pressure is now 911 MB

I can't sleep! This is insane! Not the hurricane...my fantasy football addiction. How did Indy's 4th string running back fare tonight? How is LJ Smith's groin? Ask me I know!

New update on the hurricane...no wind increase. Hard to believe...this storm looks perfect. Weather Channel ("Hurricane Central") reports good news for mexico...Cancun and Cozumel will not get much from the storm. Thank God. They can't shoot Girls Gone Wild in Punta Allen.

Jenae! How do you like your duties as administrator? One suggestion...more exclamation points!!! Reed uses them a lot! Even when they are not necessary!

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By JY | August 21, 2007 @ 1:21 AM #

Rick, it's JY on tv.net!!!!!!!!!!

Reed may be disappointed in the lack of exclamation points that for sure!

I'm trying to look up lowest pressures for Atlantic storms at landfall, but I just took some tylenol pm, so that search may end shortly!

Rick, I have a fantasy football party in two weeks, I may need to consult with you for picks. I told Reed you guys didn't want me in your football league cause of what happened with the NCAA tournament!!

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Jason - Vancouver, WA | August 21, 2007 @ 3:39 AM #

Wow, The Weather Channel has recently reported 907mb for the lowest reading, but I think they said it went up slightly due the storm starting to interact with land.

Also, the hurricane looks incredible from the satellite imagery. I hope no one loses their life. This hurricane is very interesting from a meteorological point-of-view. I am sure the people in the area probably would disagree! I imagine there will be a lot of damage in areas even though the hurricane went South of populated areas.

To clarify my last post, the 906 MB reading was from what The Weather Channel received from the aircraft just before landfall. This is confirmed in the 4:00 AM report from the NHC. I only quoted the part related to the pressure reading.

looks as if deans path has been a stroke of luck for mexico.....so far that is
After killing 13 people in the Caribbean, it made landfall in a lesser populated coastline and skirted most of the tourist resorts where tourists had been evacuated. It weakened within hours to a Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. full report at http://www.pr-inside.com/hurricane-dean-s-path-a-stroke-of-r203913.htm

So far so good for Dean in the Yucatan, but I don't know if we are going to say that once it makes landfall again south of Tampico. With the mountains, and heavy rain, landslides and flash flooding will not be good.
In 2005, Stan made landfall further south, and caused an estimated 1500 fatalities. Most don't remember Stan, but that name along with several others were retired during the 2005 season.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Connor | August 21, 2007 @ 12:22 PM #

I think I remember Stan...

Didn't it bury entire towns under 40 feet of mud? Or at least something similar to that?

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By JY | August 21, 2007 @ 12:27 PM #

I don't remember how much mud.. but I remember that the storm was barely hurricane strength. Of course tropical storms can cause deaths too, in 2001, Tropical Storm Allison, the only T.S. name to be retired, dumped over 40 inches of rain in Houston, and caused around 40 deaths.

Hurricane Stan... Wikipedia does a pretty good job with their biographies of past hurricanes (click name)

Wow... I had pretty much forgotten that one too.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By tim jacobs | August 21, 2007 @ 12:47 PM #

here you go biography of hurricane stan if anyone is interested from wikipedia.....
Hurricane Stan was the eighteenth named tropical storm and eleventh hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was also the sixth of seven tropical cyclones (three hurricanes, two of them major, three tropical storms and one tropical depression) to make landfall in Mexico. Stan was a relatively weak storm that only briefly reached hurricane status. It was embedded in a larger non-tropical system of rainstorms that dropped torrential rains in the Central American countries of Guatemala and El Salvador and in southern Mexico, causing flooding and mudslides that led to at least 1,662 and possibly up to 2,000 deaths; Stan is estimated to be directly responsible for 80 of these. Damage totaled between $1 to $2 billion (2005 USD).[1]

I went through Allison in Houston. I didn't know it was the only TS name ever retired. Cool :)

It will be interesting to see how the village of Majahual fared, since it took a direct hit. The good news is that the entire town was evacuated beforehand. Under my name is a previous photo of the village (don't know how old the photo is).

Also, want to know how the Sian Ka'an nature reserve came through, hopefully it wasn't too ravaged.

When Jamaica Joel and Rasta Reed get back to the U.S., hopefully they'll have a complete breakdown of Dean along with some good footage!

The trip may have been bittersweet in a way, considering they missed out on that freakish Oklahoma "tropical storm." That can't happen too often.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By PB | August 21, 2007 @ 1:20 PM #

Joe, the eye was less than 30 miles from the southern edge of the reserve, about 100 from it's north end. It probably took a good hit.
The eye passed right over several small towns ~40 miles inland. Fairly populated place there around the intersection of hwys 293 and 307.
Sounded like FedMex was doing a good job evacutaing, so hopefully things will be ok down there.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | August 21, 2007 @ 1:24 PM #

Yeah, it does sound like they did a real good job with the evacuations! It will probably take a long time to survey all the damage and casualties since there are so many rural communities.

Just saw this in a recent article:

"The storm, which killed at least 13 people across the Caribbean, was expected to push a surge of seawater 12 to 18 feet above normal tides onto the coast and dumped huge amounts of rain on the low-lying Yucatan Peninsula, where thousands of Mayan Indians live in stick huts in isolated communities. ... The governor said 250 small communities were evacuated, but local media reported that others turned away soldiers with machetes and refused to leave."

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By JY | August 21, 2007 @ 1:30 PM #

It would be interesting if there was any way to study wildlife and hurricanes effects. Of course hurricanes are natural, but over water, kills many birds each year.
I asked Jack Bevens with the NHC about this once, but he had no idea. Of course I sort of asked him in a joking matter, but he was very serious.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By JY | August 21, 2007 @ 1:42 PM #

I'm sure most of you saw this in the morning update with the NHC:

DEAN MADE LANDFALL ON THE EAST COAST OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA NEAR THE CRUISE SHIP PORT OF COSTA MAYA AROUND 0830 UTC... BASED ON THE DROPSONDE AND THE FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS...THE INTENSITY IS SET AT 145 KT. THE 906 MB CENTRAL PRESSURE IS THE NINTH LOWEST ON RECORD FOR AN ATLANTIC BASIN HURRICANE THE THIRD LOWEST AT LANDFALL BEHIND THE 1935 LABOR DAY HURRICANE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS AND HURRICANE GILBERT OF 1988 IN CANCUN MEXICO. DEAN IS ALSO THE FIRST CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE TO MAKE LANDFALL IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN SINCE ANDREW OF 1992.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | August 21, 2007 @ 1:52 PM #

Not many detailed reports coming out of Mexico yet, it would seem... so far, "so good". With the path Dean chose to take, avoiding Jamaica (and the possibility of horrible flash-flooding in Haiti), and then hitting such a rural area of the Yucatan, it's possible the name Dean won't even be retired, since the names are retired based on destruction & death toll. Knock on wood

The "hurricane josh" guy apparently is fine. From what I gather on the other board he got hit by the southern eyewall, not the northern, and he was in a pretty sturdy concrete structure.

I would like to see his video.

Thanks Joe. Easy for you to take such things so lightly when you live in the land of the banana slug. :-D

Heidi, there you are finally.

Nice call on the Iowa MCS! LOL.

I'm starting to think you could be a pretty darn good weather forecaster, at least in August- oh, and just forecast for Iowa, lol.

I'm going to jump all over this one and forecast 2 more MCS's for Iowa the next 2 nights.

In all seriousness, tomorrow night looks almost identical to tonight's set up, at least for tornadoes in Nebraska/southern South Dakota again. Maybe even a better chance than tonight.

Maybe if Reed and Joel get enough sleep they can hop in the car, oh, about 4 am and get to northern Nebraska in time for the show- c'mon guys, no rest for the weary!!

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Jason - Vancouver, WA | August 21, 2007 @ 10:47 PM #

We had nice weather here in Vancouver (Portland area) today.

Also, Hurricane Dean does not look very impressive on the satellite imagery after going over the Yucatan compared to previous days. However, I am sure it can still be dangerous with 80 MPH winds (currently) and the possible flash floods. NHC says it is running out of time to become a major hurricane, again.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Joel | August 21, 2007 @ 10:48 PM #

I've landed and am back at home. Reed's a couple of hours behind because we couldn't get on the same flight from Atlanta to OKC.

We spent 6 hours at the Jamaica airport this morning. It was probably 90 degrees with around an 80 dewpoint and no wind. I feel sorry for the people who had to sit by us on the way back.

From hurricanes to tornadoes. As soon as Reed lands we're gonna have to talk about the possibilities in Nebraska tomorrow. After a quick glance, looks like there could be some nice supercells with the potential for a couple of hoses.

Does anyone know what the windspeeds were estimated to be in the Jarrell, TX tornado? I'm reading about it and the reports of what this tornado did are absolutely unbelievable.

"It is believed that in the field where the tornado developed, it ripped the corn husks out of the ground by the millions and then impaled the cows in the next field. The tornado lifted the cows and dropped them on the ground multiple times, breaking their legs."

"The first Williamson County Sheriff's Deputy to arrive on the scene was unfamiliar with that particular area — he saw the path of the tornado by the damaged earth it left behind, but he did not immediately see any typical damaged homes or debris, and called out on the radio that the tornado had not seemed to have produced any damage. He was not aware that the blank land that he was looking at had been, 10 minutes earlier, the Double Creek neighborhood. It was wiped clean — houses were vaporized, concrete slabs were pulverized, and even sewer & water pipes were sucked up out of the ground."

Even the Moore tornado left bits of the houses behind...

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Joel | August 22, 2007 @ 12:20 AM #

Cors - no worries. It was my phone, he just answered it.

Connor - the Gerald, TX tornado was an F5. Interestingly, it was moving very slowly to the SW. One of the reasons for the extensive amount of damage was the slow movement. May 3rd was moving NE around 40 mph so the total time spent over any one spot was much shorter than that of Gerald, giving Gerald much more opportunity to wipe the ground clean.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Connor | August 22, 2007 @ 12:46 AM #

Thanks Joel. Sorry, but just thought I'd point out that I'm 99.9% sure it's spelled Jarrell, not Gerald, unless I'm thinking of a different tornado.

From the Irony Department...

The death toll from Tropical Storm Erin was (so far) higher than that from Hurricane Dean.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Erin_(2007)

While Reed and Joel traveled completely out of their way to Jamaica to try to intercept a Category 5, Erin re-intensified and re-formed with a rotational pattern over... of all places... Oklahoma City!

Something is bass-ackwards in all that.

Category 5 Dean Last Night!! Now Cat 3 Inland Comment Posted By Caro | August 22, 2007 @ 1:25 PM #

To Tim Jacobs: it sais (i'll do my best to translate):
"After weakened, Dean seems to reinforced after being in contact with the hot water of "Campeche bay" ( I don't know if the name is the same in english). Dean is now a category 2 hurricane again with winds of 160km/h (99.42 mph if my calculation is correct) and he's heading for the north of Veracruz where he should be at the end of the day. Petroleum companies have evacuate their employees from the "dolly", like Petroleos de Mexico, who take his 18,000 employees in a safe place.

Dean has cause less damage than predicted and no one was killed. Only material damage. Phone is fonctionnal but electricity is cut. Tourists have been evacuated from Riviera Maya (2/3 of them), some of them have "camp-out" at the airport to be sure to catch a plane. everything that can be carried away by the storm (like traffic pannels and other things like that) where removed. airports of Cancun and Canzumel are closed, and roads are closed.

Cancun is ok, Dean pass south of it, in the region of Majahual, a "cruising port" (?). In Belize, every hospital was closed and autorities asked to the population to quit the city because the shelters are not enough "solid" for an hurricane like Dean."

That's almost it...

Well, Dean has petered out, and is now a tropical storm, fading fast.

Overall, kinda disappointing from a stormchasing standpoint.

the cell thats currently between imperial and mcCook, nebraska is worth keeping an eye on...lots of fuel in the air...depoints east of the storm are in the 70 degree range...so theres defiently moisture available...!
