Dean is growing after brushing the south side of Jamaica. The storm produced a wind gust in Kingston of 138 mph! Dean is headed toward a favorable environment for intensification! Hurricanes love the Northwest Caribbean!

Here is a wider view of the Atlantic/Caribbean that shows the location of Dean relative to the Yucatan. Also notice the tropical wave in the Central Atlantic.

Back in the U.S. there have been MAJOR flooding issues in Minnesota and in Oklahoma. Here is a loop from Saturday night's Erin remnants intensification:

Reed and Joel will be touring Jamaica tomorrow. Hopefully their internet will be up and running.

Just a clarification... I was posting under Reed's name!
Pssst... Udpate?
Finally, radar loop is here I love it. Matt Chat, Daniel B. and I drove out to Kingfisher OK this afternoon, the place was nuts. EM was launching rescue boats from highway 81 in downtown. There were several houses under water and most roads were impassable, you could only get to town but you could not go through it or around it because the flooding was to widespread. I have heard rumors that two people have died, I hope this is not true. I hope the waters recede quickly so the town and its people can get back to their daily livelihood.
Kingfisher, Kingston, I'm thinking August is not a good time to live in a town the starts with "King"
So not only are Texas and Oklahoma two of the best states to live in if you like tornadoes, apparently we've also decided to take over Florida's role with tropical systems :)
It seems that It is better to live in a town with wet, mill, red, hob, or hurst in it as they are more close calls and overall calmer skies
That look like a hurricane over land.
Q. if it had the structure of a Tropical storm would it still be referred to as such
Hurricanes/Tropical Storms are over water, unless they move inland. They quickly fade into tropical depression, or remnant low pressures.
Every tropical cyclone is an area of low pressure.. so it does look like a tropical system on radar for sure. Especially with the eye-wall like appearance!
OK has 10,000 lakes too!!
I hear the crickets again... and an owl!!
Winds up to 150 MPH Again for Dean. Expected to become a CAT5 Later this morning.
IA's getting kinda wet too!!
Hey ya everyone!!!!
Man you go away for a while and this happens!!!!
So Reed and Joel are of on the hunt...hope they stay safe!!
Will they be reporting back to us?
Without having to go back and read all the blogs can someone be nice enough and post a quick reply so i can get myself up to date.
Cheers, (ohh i went to Rotorua in NZ and went and saw all volcanic activity...fun fun fun)
That does sound like fun!!!
I'm an idiot... but i've heard NZ is really beautiful land!!
Yeah NZ is beautiful...have you seen lord of the rings...coz thats pretty much whats it's like. Except for the cities and stuff.
I Haven't actually watched it... but I get the idea!!
sounds like a great vacation!
Yeah it was!!!
Thats whats great about living in NZ there is so many things to see!!! Except extreme weather lol
chirp, chirp, chirp...
Reed and Joel, I hope the Internet is working for you today. I am looking forward to your updates when you can post them.
Wow … Hurricane Dean continues to look impressive on the satellite imagery. I was glad to hear that the hurricane’s eye did not actually come onshore in Jamaica. I think things would have been considerably worse to the North if the country took a direct hit form the hurricane (go down the middle of Jamaica). However, I am sure they have a lot of damage especially towards the South. I hope no one lost their life on Jamaica. I hope things will be okay for the Grand Cayman Islands. According to the latest NHC forecast map, it looks like Hurricane Dean is not going to plow through the Grand Cayman Islands. I do not think it looks good for Mexico with a possible Category 5.
reports of gunfights breaking out in jamaica. looters are shooting at police.
anyone know if these thunderstorm complexes are getting organized east south east of florida?
Dean is sure looking like a difficult beast to intercept! Jamaica looked like the best spot for a daylight rendezvous, until the storm turned south. A lot of media crews have gathered in Cancun, but now it appears the landfall will be over 100 miles south of that. The towns in that area (Majahual, Xcalak) look more like tiny villages without any beefy buildings for protection... and landfall will be in the dark at ~2:30 AM. Perhaps if it tracks south a little more, Chetumal will be the place to be because it is a bigger city (pop. ~137,000) and has an airport, but it is set inland quite a ways but it will still be the middle of the night.
After that it is the Mexican coastline on the other side of Campeche Bay... I wonder if the bay is wide enough to allow it to regain any strength it may lose over the Yucatan?
looks like a good move to sit this one out Cors
yea reed was saying it might go south..I guess he was right.
but i have a feeling we will soon have another hurricane..with my name on it ;)
It looks like Hurricane Emily in '05 hit the northern part of the Yucatan as a Cat 4, weakened considerably, but then regained into a Cat 3 when it hit the Mexican mainland again a while later. Since it went a little more north than Dean is tracking, though, my (totally uneducated) guess is that Dean will drop at least two notches between landfall on the Yucatan and landfall again on Mexico coast... BWDIK
Here we go... something more official
http://tsr.mssl.ucl.ac.uk
If you keep clicking deeper into their map, these guys have Dean hitting the Yucatan as a Category 5(!) and then probably dying down into a Category 2 when it hits Mexico again. Three notches down
Having completed my first class at OU, I can say that my love of southern girls is pretty much out of control. This place is GOLD.
That is one bad looking radar.
sounds like my kind of place corey! :D
After a long period of time not hearing from fellow Storm Chaser Jim Edds, he finally was able to get some communication of from Kingston Jamaica.

Morning all
What a glorious day - even though we have a likkle bit of drizzle right now, this is certainly a beautiful morning.
We suffered very LITTLE damage in this area - heavy, heavy winds but very little rain. There are some trees down, but the council crews have been on the road from the very wee hours of the morning, getting them cleared.
JPS is going through and inspecting all the lines - once they are clear, power will be restored, we are hoping for the main lines to be in order tomorrow - the secondaries will take longer.
we started the generator at Island Village this morning - so everyone was lining up to make tea and coffee.
Well yesterday afternoon got a bit exciting at times, but nowhere near as bad as what we were expecting - many thanks Dean for diving to our south. Kingston had very heavy winds and damages are being assessed.
S.Ann's Bay isn good shape - Portland was hit hard with flooding, houses destroyed, roads blocked. treasure Beach was also hit hard, waitig to hear the extent
Everyone is out sweeping up and getting rid of tree limbs, I saw very few downed trees onmy way to work this morning, but many limbs torn off We are in good shape andback to normal except for electricity insme areas tomorrow

a state a emergency has been decleared in jamaica
Corey, rope it in.
I haven't heard from Reed yet this morning. Hopefully he will call soon.
they are about to have an election in jamaica but they were saying the state of emergency could last up to a month. also shortage of supplies (water/food) being reported.
most likey though its to prevent riots.

Just saw some footage from Jim Edds from the extremestorms site on CNN. Looks like he decided to double risk and stay in Kingston, Jamaica too.
Oh and Montego Bay Airport is already reopened
Top of the world to you all!!
I love sleepin in this late!! Any interesting weather stateside??
I can't, it's amazing!
Hopefully he'll be in touch soon; I'm curious to see whether they'll try to make a second intercept. One of these days I'll try to tag along to Bama if you approve...I've always wanted to see the coastal area.
My friend Kenny is from Kingston...I was trying to get in touch with him a couple days ago but no luck. I think he said Kingston has a good part and a terrible part, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people were able to shack up there.
Corey,
You can come to down to the Gulf Coast anytime! We'd love to have you!
I'm actually going up to Norman in less than a month for my birthday! We are going to an OU game too!
I'm glad the airport is back open! I still haven't heard from Reed yet...hopefully he will call soon!
Interesting how the weather shows said the eye missed the island, but in one frame you could see part of the eye when it wobbled over that spit of land that sticks out to the south.
Severe T-Storm Watch for my area of Ohio. Looks like some hail/wind and heavy rain.
Corey: too bad they are all married by 19.
Jamaica and looting go together like...cold and snow? clouds and rain? hurricanes and wind?. i would go as far to say anything shy of full scale rioting in kingston is pretty much run-of-the-mill thanks to gun and drug runners that use the island as a stop off. Its unfortunate, but the Jamaican police are heavily armed for a reason and everyone should be more or less fine.
Hell of a system of OKC, good thing my view was to the east down there or i would have been pissed to miss it.
I just spoke to Reed! A lot of the roads are out, so they are not able to tour the south side of the island. He said he got a lot of video, and will post it tomorrow when he gets back.
tornado warnings to the north of me for crawford county in ohio. sunny and warm here with 88 in fairfield county.
BigT, I don't really appreciate you making fun of our women.
Just because they've had babies at nineteen don't mean they're married :P
JY, I'm sure Reed will be really happy about how you've handled the site while he's been away. :) Don't disappear on us when they get back, okay?!
wow thats good news JY! I cant wait to see it :D
Kinda on topic here. Apparently the space shuttle's two "candidate" approaches tomorrow/the day after are pathed right over Hurricane Dean. Should be a good view!
This is your Captain speaking. Out your window is a category 5 hurricane that would rip us to shreds if we went through it. We realize you don't really have a choice when flying to space and we're happy you chose NASA.
Dean is a Cat 4 with 104 mph winds

Hey, look what I found! ^^^ Remember Joe's comment the other day?!
Now I remember why I hate living here!!
it's 61Degrees!! =(
Thats great Heidi! :D how did you found it or hehe did you make it :P
You Know... It's not so much the heat, It's that gosh darn humidity!!
Hey Brady I will trade spots w/ ya lol!!!
Omg I have been so overwhelmed w/ scool I havn't had a chance to post in a long time!! Anyway Hurricane Dean will likely miss the U.S. but there is a new tropical wave out in the atlantic that will more than likely turn in to a TD soon=)
That radar loop that you posted on here from the other night in Oklahoma is incrediable! I have never seen anything like from a storm that has been over land for almost a week.

Cors, I found it at a blog I was looking at. Here's the link ^^ - you'll have to scroll down to see it. :P
Hey heidi did u here that the storm might get in to a CAT 5?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!???!!?!?!?!?!?!
You're kidding, Caleb!?!?!? Thanks! ;-D
Hey everyone! Wow, yet another hot day here in Kansas. Too bad there isn't enough moisture in the atmosphere, or the wanna be storms piling up to my north would amount to something.
Anything cool or interesting I missed while gone? ;)

I guess that pretty much speaks for itself.
!!! That sprang up in the last few minutes, it hasn't even gone off on SwiftWX yet... oh wait, there it goes... lol.
Finally, some unstable weather!! Yaay!! :D
Now, show some rotation baby... ;)
Thanks Heidi! I'm sure Reed can't wait to get back to internet access instead of having to rely on 2 minute conversations!
It seems like Dean has been on cat 5 threshold for 4 days. I am pretty sure that Dean has made it to cat 5 status at one point, but I'm not sure why NHC doesn't want to upgrade Dean?
We'll see what happens during the intermediate update at 8pm EDT.
AJ you lucky !@#%.
An august supercell heading right for you? How often does that happen? Every 20 years?
GET ON IT NOW!

Alright all, wish me luck! Hopefully it isn't a normal supercell in the case that it likes to die right when I get to it. lol. Cross your fingers!
I'm on the road again... :D
Reed just called and their flight leaves tomorrow at noon. He said as soon as he is home he will load his photos and video - if not before if he is able to. (he can't find his firewire cable). They did not venture out today - the taxis were not running and he heard rumors of looting and robbery - even one of FEMA people robbed. He sounded anxious to get home.
Just so yall know, the storm AJ is heading for has golf ball sized hail and winds of 70+ mph

On the map, just north of where the eye is projected to hit is something called the Sian Ka'an Reserve. It looks like it is really going to get thrashed :-(
"The Sian Ka'an is the third largest protected area in Mexico. It is home to over 300 bird species and includes an extensive variety of ecosystems, such as islands, coastal lagoons, wetlands, coastal dunes, petenes and Mangroves. Two shallow bays, Ascension and Espiritu Santo contain the largest lobster breeding grounds in Mexico. Only a third of the reserve is totally explored, since it is rather inaccessible. Few people live on the reserve, but this is expected to change. Currently there are no places to stay at the Sian Ka'an, but may people camp on their own."
Hey, that's an interesting looking cell you got there AJ. Ride em cowboy!
Ironically...
"Sian Ka’an" is translated from Mayan as "where the sky is born" or "gift from the sky."
wow thats incredible joe

its just looking like a super huge bowlingball just about to flatten belize and mexico. its trully a terrible hurricane Im affraid the people in belize dont really know wots coming... :(
cnn now reporting dean has reached cat 5 status
DEAN IS A CAT 5 WITH WINDS OF 160 MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! poor people i bet Reed is happy!!!!
I must say. I am new to this site and all of you have kept me rather amused and informed the past few days.
So you are saying you know nothing about sever weather?
Dean is a Cat. 5?! Wow. It certainly took long enough!
btw, I had a safe and successful chase. Straight line winds in excess of 70 mph, with a reported gust of at least 80. Hail golf ball size and larger reported to my east, and I lived thru yet another microburst, whili outside my vehicle!
Aahhh, the crazy Kansas weather... that little storm wasn't there 10 minutes before I noticed it!
And yes Heidi, I remembered my camera :D Should be going through the film later on.
:D
I would say I have a moderate knowledge of sever weather. I live on the east coast so we don't get much around here. But, I do spend many hours on noaa. I am fascinated by weather. Just don't have the ability to chase down super cells.
Well Robk, you don't know until you've experienced, may I say! If you need anything, have any question, that's why we're here, i guess... ;)
I have huge trees down in my street!
Wow, very impressive! Yes, it took forever!!!!! I think those warmer waters really helped. I’m looking forward to the 11:00 update from the NHC.
click my name for a nature video from belize.
Thats great AJ!! we've really gotten the shaft on severe weather around here this year! its been cloudy with a chilly lake wind for the last 3 days! I'm beginning to wonder if my chasing season is over! =(
What's the latest ETA for landfall, anybody know?
Hey, you know what? We haven't heard from Andrew for several days now. I hope he isn't flooded out up in Minnesota. :-/
I've gotta catch up now - went fishing @ my pond (14-15" bass :) and now I have satellite images and nature videos to watch. Thanks for that info about the preserve, Joe.
I wuz kinda wondering about him too!! I'm sure Anoka's received more rain than we have!! it rained for about 3min this morning that was it! it is sooo dry here! I'm affraid we're gonna burn up!
I wanna go fishing!! but I gots to fix the WIV first!
My neighborhood is a mad house right now, with people picking up debris from the microburst and such. I've also wondered about Andrew, hopefully he's alright in Minny.
Brady, let me know when the WIV is ready, cause I'll want to tag along! ;)
We just got hammered here in Omaha. Huge shelf clouds and a tornado or 2 touched down west of here. There is an absolutely beautiful lightning show going on right now.
Hi Joe,
I am not exactly sure … perhaps someone with more experience could answer your question. According to the NHC, Dean is supposed to make landfall in the early morning. A new update will be out shortly (11:00 Eastern time). Maybe there will be a more precise time in the new update. I hope this helps.
DEAN IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 20 MPH...32 KM/HR...AND A WESTWARD OR WEST-NORTHWESTWARD MOTION IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS. ON THIS TRACK THE CENTER OF THE HURRICANE IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL ON THE YUCATAN PENINSULA VERY EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. HOWEVER...CONDITIONS ARE ALREADY BEGINNING TO DETERIORATE ALONG THE EAST COAST OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT4+shtml/202350.shtml?
It should be back in the water before labor day weekend!!
I still need a flywheel! Everything else on her is ready to rock!
Thats kool bowler!! I'm jealous!! I had to drive 100mi the other day! And 300 two days before just to see good lightning!!
The news is saying that this is one of the best lightning shows we've had in recent history. The new guys are reporting over 3000+ strikes!
Thanks Jason!
Wow bowler, that sounds awesome! I'm only a few hundred miles southwest of you, and I also got an excellent show. We had a couple of microbursts, and it's caused some minor damage, but nothing serious :)
Your lucky. Our storm rotated for approximately 2 seconds. lol. Oh well... some awesome mammatus shots as well as striations... maybe even serrations... :D

Yeah the mammatus clouds over the city were amazing to look at. I'm trying to dig up a picture of the shelf cloud that they are showing on the news.
Current severe storms in Kansas:
Dickinson, until 9:15 CDT
Hodgeman, until 9:45 CDT
Seward, until 9:45 CDT
Stevens, until 9:45 CDT
Wabaunsee, until 9:30 CDT
All storms in these areas have severe traits, such as quarter size hail and winds at or near 60 mph. Just thought you all might like to know what's going on in my neck of the prairie... ;)
Ok here is a link to the pictures of this storm that passed through.

Uh, I can't pull up the site bowler. Shall I just try the KETV web site?
Hey AJ, I hope I got "your" storm here - I saved the GR images for you while you were out earlier.

Now I'm gonna go take a look at these current storms - plus the Dean satellite, of course!
The track has dipped a tiny bit south, once again. It looks like Chetumel, pop. 137K, could be right in the eye.
Thats wierd. Yeah that link is straight from ketv's website.
It worked for me, Bowler. :)
Not bad for a middle of August lonely supercell, eh Heidi?
Bowler, I got it to work a 2nd time, so don't worry. Operator error ;)
Catch everyone later, I have school and work tomorrow. Peace, and goodnight!
Hey, our Chief Meteorologist (Ryan Vaughan, KAIT-8 Jonesboro) has, on his blog, a link to a site that has live streaming video. It has sound and everything! I'm NOT sure, however, where the cameras are set up, but I'm assuming that it's Cancun. ???
http://www.hurricanecity.com/live1.htm
According to last update from the Hurricane Center, the center is ~150 east of Chetumal and moving 20 mph, so I guess that means 7-8 hrs until the city is hit
*hit by the eye, that is... of course they'll get hit by hurricane winds much sooner than that!
1100 PM EDT MON AUG 20 2007
...EYE OF POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC HURRICANE DEAN JUST A FEW HOURS
FROM LANDFALL ALONG THE EAST COAST OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA...
195mph wind gusts!
Weird feeling... torn between feeling utterly disappointed with Alberta's weather lately - and hoping nobody else gets injured or killed from Dean or that crazy Erin remnant.
As always, stay safe.
286feet per second... imagine something as simple as a table fork picked up by that.
Hey all.
I'm here, not flooded out, just lurking. We had nice gentle rain for 2 days, absolutely perfect, although the temps have been something out of mid October instead of mid August.
Prolly haven't been posting because I am in such awe of all the rain in southeast Minny and OK and also that beast Dean about to squash the Yucatan - I've just been reading posts on the various websites about all this and following that monster on radar. Pretty amazing stuff.
Click on my name for a link to another board that has a discussion going on about Dean, and a chaser who is actually going to get hit head on by it. Hope this guy actually lives through it.
Here is a loop from the NHC. Check out the convection at the bottom/bottom left of the screen over central America just getting swept off the map by the outer bands of Dean. Amazing loop.
Hey, hey Andrew!! Nice to see ya come outta the wood work! We've been pretty dry here!!
Looks like your gonna get more!!
Why don't ya send some of that rain this way!! hehe
Looking at the current movement of Dean it appears that Chetumal will be just to the south of the eye, and probably get some of the eye wall. Hopefully not the brunt, but even so it may very well devistate the city. But the storm is completely out of control and obviously anyone still in mexican pennsula is in serious trouble in a few hours!
Hey Brady I would if i could!
It's like, waterworld down here. And it's freezing cold!
Anyone notice the FREEZE warnings in Maine today? Not frost... FREEZE. Nuts.
Curious what the difference is there Andrew. Canada we just issued Frost Warnings for the bordering Province of New Brunswick
Hurricane Dean continues to impress me! I think parts of Mexico where the eye comes onshore may be destroyed or badly damaged. I feel sorry for the residents and hope no one loses their life.
Anyone have any news yet on Hurricane Dean in terms of damages, wind reports, etc. in the Yucatan Peninsula?
According to the NHC update at 2:25 AM, Hurricane Dean now has a pressure of 909 MB or 26.84 inches.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCUAT4+shtml/210624.shtml?
905 mb in Dean latest from the NHC hunters
Estimated is at 911mb at sea level but they had a reading of 905 up a bit.
...correction 909 as Jason said.. accidentally clicked the wrong report haha
The Weather Channel is now reporting 907mb.
OMG!!! It's drizzling!! bout time!!
