Joel and I just booked a ticket to Jamaica, arriving at around noon tomorrow (Saturday), a little more than 24 hours before the projected landfall. Our plan is to find a safe, sturdy shelter on the south side of the island, capable of withstanding category 4+ winds. Overnight, Hurricane Dean has intensified into a dangerous category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. Shown below is the IR image as of 1:30 am CDT:
I expect some great footage! But remember how dangerous this storm is, and even though I always thought I would be the last person to say this, try not to take too many risks. Better safe than sorry.
Good luck! and Conner is right! Stay as safe as you possibly can! Looking forward to your updates.........! :)
Enjoy It, Stay Safe! Hope you get some awesome footage...
Reed, thanks for the update! Good luck and stay safe! Yes, this is going to be a dangerous hurricane. I look forward to your coverage of Hurricane Dean!
good luck, and good filming.......
Good luck guys, and like everyone else has said please stay safe! :)
Sounds like a lot of fun, taking a direct hit by a cat 5, hopefully you guys can make it back for the U.S. landfall, have fun.
Hope the airport is still there when you are ready to depart for home!
Good luck guys, take care.
Yeah!! good Luck!! and be careful!!! dont get caught up in some stupid looting or something like that!!! ppl think a little different down there!(not trying to say anything bad about any good folk!)
I hope for the worst... yet I don't!! (storm wise)
I guess thats the way we all feel????
Anyway... Best wishes from MN!!
Oh no! Reed posted a big Jamacian flag....... God help the Jamacians. Good luck, sounds crazy.
Good luck and be safe! Don't be as risky as you are with tornadoes. Nobody wants to see u get injured or killed. Don't let this be another Katrina for you! Have fun, and stay safe!
P.S. NHC updated and Hurricane Dean is now a dangerous Category 4 Hurricane with Maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, and gusts up to 180 mph!!!!!! Borderline Cat. 4/5 already. I think it may be a Cat. 5 by morning...so even more reason to stay safe. Goodbye for now!
Jon
I'll worry if he comes back with dreds and a blunt, and refers to everyone as mn!! hehe jk
MON!!
Yall are going to be stuck there for possibly weeks, unless you get a boat out. A Catagory 5 Hurricane, Hitting a airport will...
1. Flip jetbridges (In the event the airport uses them)
2. Possibly Topple the Tower, knocking out the airport.
3. Damage to the runway.
4. THE MOST IMPORTANT - Like Other Major Hurricanes, Airlines may not return to the area for WEEKS.
I hope yall have another form of transportation, and dont get killed. Gambaling with a 3/4 mile wide tornado is one thing, Dealing with a 70 Mile Wide EF3-EF4 Tornado is another.
All great points david....there are two airports on Jamaica...Kingston and Montego Bay. Montego Bay is on the northwest side of the island, north of the forecast track, and east of 7000 foot mountains. We're thinking they'll be spared the brunt of the storm...unless it skims the north shore. Nevertheless, we have enough food and water to survive there for weeks if need be. Stay tuned for updates.
Get some great footage guys! Kicks ass you're heading to Jamaica. I'll take a backseat though I damn near pulled the trigger on Cancun.. hah! If you need any extra data for any reason I'll be watching closely as Dean (wait thats me lol) approaches the island.
I look forward to the video updates!!! Could be quite dicey with a potential Cat 5.
BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!!!!
Good Luck Guys and stay safe they have already told us to be ready here in texas they said last night this will have a huge impact for all of texas they said here in dallas depending on how strong the storm is when it hits texas and the path they said even dallas may feel winds of 50+mph this storm is going to be huge for every thing in its way. Texas is already diclared a disaster declaration. so every 1 in texa sstock up while you can.
I just want to say I envy you all.. I chased many of hurricanes in Florida but have settled down with wife and child..I dont think I would even have the balls to chase this monster...You guys fuckin rock.... Be safe though...Then again if you crazy fuckers can get within 50 yards of a Tornado this should be a pic-nic...
Be safe
note to oneself: never go to sleep before a storm hits
Good Luck Guys! I guess filming in daylight is a plus ;)
Im gonna do some hard thinking if i still go to cancun but prolly im gonna sit this one out :(
Nice guys, finally we can get some new footage, best of lukc and be safe(wait since when is storm chasing safe!)..God bless
waaaaaaaa its looking incredible!
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/carb/vis.jpg
Good luck guys! Have a safe trip
Good luck and stay safe! we will follow the situation in the coziness of our living-room...this is the best i can do...no time, expertness and money to go where the action is... it's a luck for us that you're there to bring us some great footage... that will allow us to "live" the storm even we can't be under it for real. Thanks and take care!
good luck guys...! have a great time and like everyone else says...stay safe...
and like cors just mentioned...deans looking insane!!! perfectly defined...!
You will be one of the last plane coming on the airport in jamaica 'cause they will close it by this afternoon...
Ya good luck guys
Just so you know, I've been to Jamaica for volunteer work before. A safe and sturdy shelter on the southern coast might not be the easiest thing to find. You really have your work cut out for you. Jamaica is a poor country. And kingston isn't exactly a friendly town. Good luck, you will need it
Good luck guys, I am sure you will have no problems finding a hotel which will stand up to what Dean can throw at you. Look forward to seeing some hardcore footage!
They're forecasting it as a Cat 5 coming off Jamaica with 160mph winds. It's a cat 4 now already gusting to 185mph. Y'all are in for a fun time Reed & Joel!
Don't forget to post some stuff on the Aussie forum dude, there's a thread already started re Dean!!!
Mike
You know it's a big big thing, so please stay safe and don't risk your life. Good luck!
I have a feeling they'll make good field adjustments and be just fine! I noticed when they almost got thwarted by roadblocks in Hurricane John, they were able to talk a local into hauling them into the area in a sturdy vehicle. That was a good move. Also when the flooding started during Katrina, they had already located themselves at the police station in Slidell... so obviously they had gone to a strong, safe building on purpose. Looking forward to a great adventure tale! I just hope they can depart on schedule and don't get grounded too long. If they're there too long they may convert to Rastafarian!
Field adjustments for read are usually yelling "BACK THE F UP"!!!! Joe.
Reed too.. wow I can type
I hope they didn't forget their bathing suit...and their duck rubber ring...fastened to something the wind can't move...they will need it ;-)
Amazing story and pic by Gaetan Cormier in Quebec from another website...
"August 12th we had a good chase in the Joliette area here in Quebec.
In the past while chasing I had fairly close lightning strikes landing near me less than 100 meters, but on that night of August 12th I had a lightning strike touch down at no more than 20 meters from me! Wow, it struck a tree that I was passing by... pretty freaky!
A chaser friend of mine was following me and captured the event on video, here's the frame grab (sorry for the low quality I enlarged the image)
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/1308/strikeue8.jpg
It made me think about something.. during that strike I was at risk... I have a CB antenna on the roof (a mag mount) and during the strike I had the CB microphone in my hand... I started thinking that if the bolt would of hit my antenna, I would of probably took the hit I think that I'm goign to think twice about using the CB in an active storm"
Thanks for the link Joe surfer! This week we had big thunderstorms here in Quebec. last thursday, the little town of St-Colomban was hit by a "micro-rafale" (sorry, i don't know the word in english). They had trees dammages.
Here's a link for pictures
http://meteocentre.com/forums/index.php?s=b97d85c8d6c659a08698a9b5bb2f4503&showtopic=4890
I'm struggling to find something to say that someone else hasn't said already (watch out for flying tin, stay safe, dreadlocks, etc.) so ... how about trying some curried goat for me? I would if I were there! :D
Oh alright ... STAY SAFE, guys. There, I said it.
Cool pics Caro!
micro-rafale must be microburst
Thanks for the info Joe Surfer!
Latest note by James 007 "TyphoonHunter" Reynolds. Hopefully he'll swing by here and share some of his footage soon!
"Typhoon Sepat made landfall today to the south of the port town of Hualien. According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Sepat packed winds gusting to 138mph when it struck in the early hours. Media reports in Taiwan indicated that as much as 850mm of rain fell in eastern parts of the island.
Many rivers along the east coast are in full flood and there were some bridge closures earlier today to the south of Hualien due to dangerously high water levels. The picturesque Toroko Gorge was a scene of chaos as flash floods blocked the road and made travel to the area extremely dangerous.
According to AFP electricity was disrupted to over 240,000 households and China Airlines cancelled all of its domestic flights.
I am in Hualien and encountered the full force of the typhoon this morning. I travelled 25miles to the south of Hualien and took shelter in a hospital whilst documenting the strongest part of typhoon Sepat. I will upload photos and film shortly."

We just arrived in Montego Bay...We are currently analyzing data and will make a decision on where to find shelter soon. We're thinking Ocho Rios right now...There are several massive hotels there that will provide the best shelter possible. Stay tuned for continuous updates.
Calm down Kevin.
Glad to see y'all got in alright. Almost expected to see a post that your plane diverted or was cancelled. Keep safe gents.. and remember the cardinal rule of standing in a hurricane: A 2x4 travelling over 140 mph is moving at 205 feet per second which means you won't see it coming. Don't be downwind of anything that might break...within reason.. kinda hard to stand anywhere in a hurricane and not have stuff breaking haha!
Ocho Rios could be a good choice! According to Wiki, "The city is also considered one of the safest areas for tourists in Jamaica."
I'm with Tim in that I was almost expecting to see a post where they'd had to resort to Plan B due to not being able to get in.
Don't forget to get a photo of blue sky in side the eye-wall, if possible. :)
Shot of Ocho Rios. Hey, there could be a worse place to get stuck!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a8/Ochi.jpg
Glad to hear you have arrived, Reed & Joel!!! You two take care and start sending the photos!!!! Email me at home if there is anything you need me to do here........if you know what I mean.
Concentrate.
I wonder if Hurricane Dean will sound just like Howard Dean when it blows through. "I'm going to the Antilles! Then I'm going to Jamaica! Then I'm going to the Yucatan! Then I'm going to Texas! YAAAEGGGHHHhhhhhh!!
JOE! That was awesome!!!!!!! :D :D
hahha joe that was just too funny
Reed are u shure u want to do this... right now it might just turn in to a CAT 5!!! MON!! LOL
i know.. this is wayyy off topic.. does anyone know if the thunderstorms today in central and northern parts of alberta have the potenital to become severe with the threat of tornadoes.. oh and by the way.. good luck on the chase Reed and Joel.. hope u catch some great footage and have a good time chasing that big monster of a hurricane!!
good luck yall...im extremely jealous but stay safe get some good video and have fun! this will probably be extremely humbling i would bet and will make you realize how small you really are and that's a good feelling to have. peace.
Good luck guys, call me if you need anything.
dean is a monster! the rainfall this beast is gonna drop, let alone the winds could be life threatening to the people of the countries in the path of dean...time will tell. looking forward to footage.
yeah is a big cat 4 maby a 5!!!!!!!!!!!!
The five-day tracker still shows Dean slicing dead-center through the length of Jamaica.
It looks to me like Dean is heading a tiny bit further north than predicted, so Reed and Joel may end up getting the weaker winds of the storm. But it's still relatively far out, so we will see.
You guys are going there to loot aren't ya ;-) Stay well while you are there and hope you catch some great footage.
Connor if it takes an area of low it will go tword LA,!!!!
My fault I know I shouldn't egg him on, but wishing harm on someone is grounds for an ass whipping in my book.
Good luck on the chase Reed and Joel and be careful.
Connor, Ocho Rios is on the north side of the island, so if Dean tracks a hair north, they could be right in the eye
Wow! I'm mildly jealous, you guys will face a pretty direct hit. Good luck, and happy hunting!
That's alright gerb, we understand your frustrations. I'm rather ticked also, but please try to remember Tim's advice, and don't feed the bears.
Sorry, I meant trolls, not bears. Can't misquote the park rules sign ;)
Tracking Dean...
Here is the Jamaica page in the Caribbean Hurricane Network, a few people are posting reports
http://www.stormcarib.com/reports/current/jamaica.shtml
I have not tried this one, but this is supposed to be a live radio stream from Kingston
http://www.go-jamaica.com/power/
(there are probably some other Jamaican radio stations online too)
Thanks for the links Joe. Very helpful! The satellite images are outstanding!
Here's a taped TWC report on Dean hitting the Dominican Republic. The kids in it just keep playing in the flooded streets, like the phrase "Category 4" means nothing. Crazy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_ZULi4DtU4
Here some basic knowledge about Hurricanes etc. (if someone is interested in it):
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/tcfaqHED.html
LOL AJ, a category 4 means nothing to them, when they have already lost everything.
Its not like the lads have PS3's or anything ;) Just means the ocean comes to visit them every now and then :D
Reed and Joel, I've said it before but you guys are out of your mind. Please be safe down there, I will catch your video hopefully on CNN tonite. Keep your heads down and above water mate.
GUYS WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME!?!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!
We finally bartered our way into a safe hotel, where they won't force us into an underground shelter.
The problem is they're shutting down the wifi in 3 hours! We'll try to talk the front desk into letting us use their network to upload video. We're currently in the town of Runaway Bay, in a hotel that is "hurricane-proof", with bullet-proof windows and huge concrete walls. We are right on the ocean as well, about 3 stories up.
We're going to go scout out the area now and find some good locations to document the storm.
Right on the northern coast... could get the strongest winds there
http://www.sangstersrealty.com/images/jamaica_map.gif
PS:
Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! Hi Caleb! lol
Just google mapped Runaway Bay. Nice golf course nearby. Maybe you can get a few holes in haha. Appears the north side of the island stands a better chance of being on the right side of the eyewall with a westward motion. Perfect to feel the full brunt of Dean.
Your wind ob tomorrow night. ESE 148.7mph gusts to 192.4 mph. GOD YES!
Hi Reed&Joel! Stay safe!!! I just saw on CNN that you are going to receive the brunt of the right front quadrant - still a Cat 4 at 150mph. Further strengthening is unknown but expected. I hope you are able to stay in touch!!! It was good to hear your voice on the phone, but after being disconnected, I can't reach you anymore.
HI RES ZOOM Vis Satellite Pic as sun sets on Hurricane Dean.
Incredible eye wall shadow. If you look close you can see broken stratocu low cloud deck near ocean the ocean surface inside the eye. LOVE IT!
http://www.atmospheric-violence.com/events/hurricanedean/hi-res-dean3.jpg
Hahaha Dean. It'll be the first ever drive over a mile. Cept you won't ever be able to document where it lands because the ball will be in the middle of the ocean.
Reed, You might be able to -borrow- internet from neighbouring sites or something. If you're using Windows XP download NetStumbler before they cut you off.. it's an on-the-fly network scanning tool that you can auto connect to any unsecured networks as you roam.
Wow, awesome pic Dean. Looks like some high tops in the outer band there so this thing is probably going to intensify in the next 6-12 hours.
Man, that image is amazing. Im getting adrinaline rushes just imagineing being there.
In other news, the reminats of erin are effecting oklahoma... tornado warning for washita county and cordell.
Wow, you guys really have your work cut out for you! Now I'm all nervous...please be careful down there!
hey reed if you capture some trees the wind will really show great on video!
and remember shield your eyes! ;)
have a blast!
I can't believe they're shutting down the wifi in this place!
We saw some nice anvils of storms going up over Cuba a few hours ago....and some land-dwelling hermit crabs.
Very calm winds right now...probably dominated by subsidence on the periphery of the storm.
Cors you need to be down here! Are you still thinking of heading to Cancun?
They're probably trying to save power assuming theirs is going to go out so they can keep essential services post storm.
Still sucks though. I wonder how much a dedicated tornadovideos communications satellite & uplink would cost.. $200-300 million? Anyone want to pick up the tab?
yes im still thinking about it :P asdhfjkahsdlk
I'm trying to get in touch with a friend from the Keys who may or may not be in Jamaica. That hotel sounds like an amazing setup. Any tree ID breakthroughs?
Reed, check your facebook.
Just tell the hotel people that they can get free advertising! As in, "This is the best hotel - even during a Category 4 hurricane, they still offer internet to their guests..." You know, that sort of thing. And tell them they'll be on TV or something, or at least have their pictures on your site! That will work - sure it will! :D
Look and see if you are attached to a VOIP phone svc in your room. You might be able to hardjack into that to the network. Use NetBuster to get past their firewalls and onto the network.
Should work
MAN good luck guys.
Push comes to shove, call CNN and tell them you have video and they'll get you to the right spot boys.
JUST IN - HURRICANE HUNTERS REPORT PRESSURE HAS DROPPED TO 920 MILLBARS, THAT IS A 10 MB DROP IN 3 HOURS
Good Luck Guys!!!
Hey reed were are u now? are u getting some wind
Funny stuff:
http://hurricanedeanpath.ytmnd.com/
I don't think you guys should have gone to this one, but good luck anyway. What is your source of income that allows you to pay for trips all the time?
918MB and falling. holy crap!
WOW!! Fellas, I think Cat. 5 is going to come a whole lot faster than we thought...
Most realize this already, but just so no one feels ignored, Reed and Joel's ability to communicate will be severely restricted if not altogether absent for the next couple days...this could last up to a week or more depending on the extent of the damage caused by Dean. I'm sure they'll be making every effort to keep in touch, so please be patient!
The eye has become a perfect circle last few frames along with explosions of colder cloud tops around the center. That with a 918MB pressure all point towards a strengthening Dean. Although the wind speed usually lags the pressure drop, we could see a concerted bump UP in winds at the 11PM EDT advisory... if not sooner. Cat 5 looks imminent right now.
yup thats true corey but we can still use it! :D
cat4 or cat5 its about the difference between being runover by an 18wheeler or freightrain.
A week? Those on the Texas coast, keep your eyes peeled for a message in a bottle riding the surface currents!
I just spoke to Reed, the phone was breaking up...hopefully he will call me back tonight.
Has anyone noticed the jog to the south...now instead of moving WNW, just W? Also the models are shifting slightly southward...
This is absolutely amazing.
Cors, definitely, they'd be upset if people didn't!
Hey JY, Aaron and Rick were just joking about that wobble.
Didn't you project this scenario like 10 days ago?
Here is a post by someone who is also on the north side of the island, same general vicinity as Reed & Joel
"Just came in from Ochi, restaurants are closed, some grocery shopping going on and gas stations are busy. Small plazas are being boarded up (Jewelry stores)all in all it was quiet for Ochi on a Saturday night. We are about 20 minutes outside of Ocho Rios in Stewart town which is near Boscobel. Currently showers are coming in short bursts, some thunder and lightning and it is hot. The coast is quiet but you can hear the sound of hammers as people board up their homes.. We still have power and water. Have tried getting through to JPS to find out the power outage schedule but no answer...
Its going to be a long and interesting night-will keep you posted as events progress
Teri"
http://www.stormcarib.com/reports/current/jamaica.shtml
From the same thread, a little earlier... this is one of those little obstacles tv.net will have to navigate around..
48HR CURFEW NO IN EFFECT...Mandatory evacuation now in effect forall low lying areas
* From: Blayz Brooks
* Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2007 16:42:04 -0700 (PDT)
The Commisioner of Police has implemented a curfew
which started at 6pm this evening and will run until
6pm Monday.
OK, just spoke with Reed...he said there is amazing lightning. He is right on the water...The storms that he saw developed on the outflow of Dean (you can check that out on the IR Sat Loop)...
He said there are a few European tourists who are very non chalant about the whole thing. The good thing is that the resort they are staying in is "very safe." At least it better be.
Corey, yes I forecasted that a long time ago... My forecast for Dean has been verified. I bet it will be a cat 5 at the next update, or overnight!!!!!
eurotrash eh? not bad they are prolly having a beer with them right now =)
hey JY
do you happen to know which resort they are staying so
i can look it up on google earth/maps
JY - nice going with the forecast! ;) I always thought 10-days were impossible, so that's impressive.
If they can use their cell phone, couldn't they send photos with that (albeit not terrific ones, but still ...)??
Hey folks!!, How are things??
Nice work...I was sitting next to Reed beating the hell out of him in NCAA when you called to tell him about it. It gave the poor guy an excuse to quit...I actually think that's what drove him to Jamaica.
Tornados are spinning up from the remnants moving through OK right now. I think they're suffering from feelings of inadequacy from Dean.
JOEL!
If the tornado chasing Ram is the TIV, and the spoutseeking speedboat is the WIV...I'm very concerned about what the hotel rental is called. We need to have a quick meeting about this...it's a potential PR nightmare. Hit me on the cell stat.
I can't remember the name of their resort.. I think Reed posted it a while ago...
Heidi.. it wasn't really ten days, but I did have a good idea about this one coming off the African coast... but that doesn't mean anything. Tropical forecasting is so tough.
I got a show to do!!!! The winds will catch up later tonight
very funny Corey!
First - Hi JY!!!!! Reed called again - said he will call tomorrow am if he can - otherwise told all not to "freak out" if he and Joel do not communicate for a couple of days. (right) The prime minister just announced that power and water are shutting down tonight - Reed cannot figure out why? What do you think of the "wobble" south? He thinks it will veer back north - what do you think?
New five-day track, just came out a few minutes ago. Look how far south it's moved!
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/024031.shtml?5day#contents
Bet that makes Reed & Joel wish they had camped on the south side of the island instead
im thinking power can cause fires and water must be spared in case of pipe ruptures and landslides.
I hope they dont end up on the wrong side of the island....if I was them I would maybe see about finding a room in Montego Bay for tomorrow night.
Kingston I meant!!! Got my cities wrong.
Reed said they flew into Montego Bay b/c Kingston is NOT a safe place for them to be - crime is a huge problem I guess, under the best of circumstances and the hurricane will only make it worse. I hope they do not head that way tomorrow!
you guys are idiots. No seriously....
Do you understand what sustained winds of 160 MPH over 2-6 hours means?
Good move - I would avoid Kingston at all costs. According to reports from Hurricane Ivan, even the emergency workers were getting robbed at gunpoint in that city
I have buddies that have been to Kingston!!!
They say to stay in after dark!!
Hopefully they will heed those warnings Joe - he siad they had no intention of getting anywhere near Kingston, their resort is actually a compound he said, with security all over. His window is not boarded up - some were though. He also said their room is huge - made of cement and steel. He said there is an internet cafe on the premises that they would try in the morning. Their time is one hour ahead of eastern time and they were going to bed with an early wake up!
Interesting comment a few minutes ago on that Jamaica thread...
"Winds are dead at this point and I suspect that this is now the proverbial "calm before the storm" ... no animals in sight ... no bats, no cats, no stray animals ... NOTHING!!!"
As for food and water - they have their own supply of food - lots of energy bars, canned tuna, etc. As for water, they have their own, and are filling up water bottles as they empty. But he thinks the resort has its own water and will not be affected by the water shutting off - also has generators - they still have A/C. He was more worried about the toilets with the water shutting off - said something about using the balcony - they are on the 3rd floor. Good grief. I would not want to be under them on the 2nd.
All i can say is be safe, I was looking at some videos of hurricanes and it looks darn dangerous. Keep safe Reed and Joel as things can go wrong quite easily - especially in a possible catagory 5. It's going to be insane.
ditto
word!!
GFS has been modeling this hurricane since at least 8/8/07 or earlier, and the Stormtrack guys have been all over it too.
smt hopefully they will have some porta-potties in the hotel!
They will certainly be safe as a bug in a rug in the hotel, but mighty inconvenienced if things drag out..
wow this stucture is textbook!
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t1/rgb-l.jpg
Nader watch in southern MN, IA, SD, and NE!!!
oooh! A lunar eclipse Tue. the 28th!! early morning!!
kewl... maybe Jim in New Ulm got some more home movies tonight from his parking lot
Nice way to quote Reed, Cors. ;) Ditto JY
yeah!! I hope so too! they get all the good storms these days!!
I am going to go to bed and be up early to monitor Reed and Joel and Dean. Let's all hope they stay safe!!!!!
Hey, if they're worried about the toilet situation, they need to fill up the bath-tub (if they have one, and not just a shower) and then use that water for flushing the toilet if need be. They can use an ice bucket or something similar to transport the water from the tub to the toilet, to re-fill the toilet after it has been flushed. I hope that makes sense ... it works though! :D
Great thinkin Heidi!!
Yeah, I had to do something similar with a house where I had the water shut off while doing the plumbing... except I used rainwater caught in jugs from the downspouts
Yeah Heidi and smt, they should be pretty okay there. I have faith in it, unlike some people.
I'm out, take care!
Either Heidi has hurricane experience or lived in a trailer park! hehe (been there done that)! jk! I gotta crash soon too, gotta werk on the WIV tom!!
double eyewall reported!
I learned that trick from my mom when I was a kid. She worked for the town where I lived, and she knew when they were going to shut off the water for repairs to lines or whatever. There were 5 people in the house, so it was a necessary step to take! :D
The only place in Jamaica I have been to is Ocho Rios, for 8 hours, while on a cruise 10 yrs ago. I knew that parts of Jamaica were bad...I guess most of the resorts must be on the north coast then.
Just thinking about that is scary - if in normal times Kingston is dangerous...think about after a Cat4/5 hurricane.
Does anyone know when the last time Jamaica was hit by a major hurricane? How badly did Jamaica get damaged by Gilbert?
Mike - Hurricane Ivan in 04
When I was in Miami during Andrew, and was in a Holiday Inn when it hit, the afternoon before it hit the hotel actually sent someone to each room to fill the bathtubs with water....I had already filled mine, however.
I read (I think it was on TWC online) that this is supposed to be the worst one since 1950 for Jamaica.
ah! hehe!! I know the rainwater trick!!
One of my redneck friends has a pump going out to his pool!
They will probably be able to use rain water if they don't get the message about the bath tub. I'm just taking a wild guess, you know, since some forecasts have the island getting 20" of the stuff. :-/
Cors, I forgot to ask where you heard about the double eye-wall. I wanna see it! :p
weatherPLUS also the weather channel has reporters on location in jamaica. you can watch them online
i guess u can kinda see it here
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/carb/jsl.jpg
the double eyewall usually marks the end of rapid intensification.
Question for you Cors: Where do you see a double eyewall? I'm not very blind, but I can't see it. Please help?
I hear crickets...
I actually do Brady, no lie. lol. Well, see ya'll later!
I always learned, when you're seeing double eyewalls and hearing crickets, give the keys to someone else
lol. Thanks for the advice Joe, I'll keep that in mind... ;)
Ok, I really need to get off. No need to reply Cors.
See ya!
Have fun AJ!! hehe Joe!! I know whatchya mean!!
I haven't seen any eyewalls... but I spotted some walleyes earlier!!
Heidi -
The past few NHC forecast discussions have mentioned that the Hurricane Hunters found evidence of concentric eyewalls - both by radar imagery and by wind speed observations near the eye.
Heheh - last time I was in Minnesota, for a major trade show, they actually served walleye fingers during dinner!
I'm staying up at least another hour 'cause I wanna see the next 5-day track report.
Walleye dinner in Minnesota!! I am not suprised!
some good stuff!!
hey kevin I think u are jealous that you are a pussy and that u work for a tiny "experimental" forecasting company in a state where all u can forecast is fog drip
Here is a link for radar from Cuba, which also covers Jamaica.

Hehe!!
It looks like convection is not going through the diurnal cycle and exploding.
With the wobbles, the eye may be just south of Jamaica...we'll see.
A bust chase in SD today leaves me even more Jealous that folks are in position for Dean in Jamaica, just hoping for the chasers sake that Dean doesn't miss the Island to the South. Will they be doing any live updating for any networks?
Not sure Dustin...they know they're down there...it's just a wait and see game right now.
David Reimer, just so I'm keeping my Davids straight... you are the David who is 15-16 yrs old and who lives in Texas, yes?
I need to get a stinking passport!
The pressure is now 921 mb!! A little higher.
Yeah the pressure has risen slightly and I would expect that trend to continue through the night, it appears Dean is currently undergoing an Eye Replacement Cycle as well as finishing fighting off some dry air it ingested on its East side earlier today. Currently cloud tops are much warmer meaning convection is not as significant as earlier today, however the timing of all of this may be just right so that Dean may be once again increasing in intensity just before it makes landfall or brushes Jamaica.
Latest 5-day cone, good call JY!

I love eyewall replacement cycles!
The forecast track has it slowing down just a little once again.. I just hope that they will have plenty of daylight to shoot some good stuff...Cancun on the other hand is going to be tough!
I should get a phone call from Reed tomorrow morning... I will post when I do.
Good Thing im not going to be a meteorologist then.
Im going to be a commercial pilot, and start ground school in a few weeks.
I have also seen the forecast. And 95% of the time it is right, He predicted the Tornado Zone for the Montatoba Wedge Tornado. I invite you to visit his website to view it, Its on it still.
Also, I would like to point out, I don't come on here and threaten people as implied in a very recent post made.
If you which to contact me in private, please contact me on AIM. my AIM is davidrtex@sbcglobal.net
Good luck on the ground school David! I was working on my commercial when I got diabetes myself. So now I'm going to be a computer programmer/meteorologist haha. It's Manitoba by the way unless we merged with Montana. I don't think I could survive the influx of (mountain folk).
Well... I don't know much about hurricanes, seeing as I've never really have traveled outside of the midwest! but I've seen some pretty badass gales!! Hopefully I can get some good pics this fall!!
Sorry, I'm not that great with spelling.
Its the place which had the huge wedge, I think that may make it easier
