Supercells and isolated tornadoes are likely this afternoon/evening for the Upper Mississippi River Valley, as a strong upper trough moves through Southern Canada.  All models are forecasting a 30+ knot low-level jet to develop by 7:00 pm CDT, with strong westerly flow aloft and extreme instability.  The best 0-1 km helicity is forecast to be in northwest Wisconsin, and extreme southeast Minnesota, collocated with the nose of the low-level jet.  Here are some selected forecasts from the 12z WRF:

Blech. Impossible chase territory. Trees and bluffs everywhere.

I guess that means tv.net isn't going after this one, too far of a drive to get there in time

From the looks of it, Andrew is also discouraged from chasing. It would be hard to see anything, I bet.

i love chasing in the trees. ok...not the smartest thing to do but... it can be exciting.

Supercells likely for the Upper MS River Valley today! Comment Posted By AJ | August 11, 2007 @ 1:25 PM #

Trees are both a blessing and a curse: nice to park under for shade, not so nice when trying to stop a low funnel. Also, really not nice when the branches snap and land on your car.

That should be "spot", not stop. Ok, I'm shutting up now.

Things are looking good here in Minneapolis... nothing but sunshine... and its getting very humid.

I thought Paul Bunyan chopped all your trees down.

You could always do a highway-only chase

Supercells likely for the Upper MS River Valley today! Comment Posted By AJ | August 11, 2007 @ 1:39 PM #

What's the fun in sticking to the highway? Back roads are one of my best friends, sometimes... they can be rutted, nasty mudholes, but that's when 4 wheel drive comes in :)

Supercells likely for the Upper MS River Valley today! Comment Posted By Brady MN | August 11, 2007 @ 1:45 PM #

Oh my Dodge with 190k on it can handle MN roads no prob
I just have a thursty engine and limited funds.

My little older Bronco can handle most situations, except corepunching. That's not happening with it. lol. A fiberglass back roof isn't the strongest in hail and strong winds...

Hehe!

Supercells likely for the Upper MS River Valley today! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | August 11, 2007 @ 2:05 PM #

The whole state of Minnesota sorta looks like a supercell cloud, doesn't it.

That part hanging out over Lake Superior looks like an anvil, and that little nub in Lake of the Woods is the overshooting top.

Supercells likely for the Upper MS River Valley today! Comment Posted By Dale | August 11, 2007 @ 2:17 PM #

ok so what would be your ultimate chase vehicle gang?

Supercells likely for the Upper MS River Valley today! Comment Posted By AJ | August 11, 2007 @ 2:27 PM #

Well Dale, any vehicle that is durable, reliable, and roomy enough for a few friends is acceptable in my book. To me, 4 wheel drive is a plus, and relatively god gas mileage is a big plus. For me, a Nissan XTerra, newer Ford Explorer, Toyota Tacoma or Subaru wagon would work.

Here is an issue that I feel I should clear up.

Kenny Allen just made a nice post on his website today, describing yesterday's action in South Dakota. At the bottom, however, he included this comment, "One more thing… We have never chased in Colorado."

I believe he said that because he felt that I had been talking about Severe Studios yesterday when I had made this observation:

------------------------------------
Posted By Joe Surfer | August 10, 2007 @ 11:57 PM #

it was a month or so ago that they said "Large Tornado" in Colorado but it turned out to be a goofy landspout or something, so i'm not sure how much to read into their verbage...
------------------------------------

However, the "they" in my post was in reference to the National Weather Service and their alerts, not to Severe Studios. I was referring back to an exchange between several of us on this blog in July, when NWS put out a warning about a "large and extremely dangerous tornado" in Colorado that turned out to be a bit of a wimp. Here was the exchange in July:

------------------------------------
Posted By Matt Chatelain | July 3, 2007 @ 5:41 PM #

There is apparently a "large tornado" in colorado right now?

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GOODLAND HAS ISSUED A

* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
NORTHWESTERN KIT CARSON COUNTY IN EAST CENTRAL COLORADO...

* UNTIL 530 PM MDT

* AT 418 PM MDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING
A LARGE AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TORNADO 8 MILES NORTHWEST OF
SEIBERT...MOVING NORTHWEST AT 5 MPH.

Interesting setup out there, not sure how there could be a "large" tornado though

Matt Chatelain, here is a shot of the tornado in Kit Carson County in Colorado you mentioned today

Is it just me or does that Colorado tornado look like a landspout too?

Posted By Joel | July 3, 2007 @ 11:19 PM #

Hey Heidi - the Colorado pics look like a landspout to me too. I took a quick peek at a radar of NE CO earlier and the storms didn't look supercellular, but I don't know if that was the time that these tornadoes were occurring.

Posted By Andrew | July 3, 2007 @ 11:27 PM #

OK so this is probably not the forum to be asking for an answer for this question, but tonight's setup and tornados/gustnados/landspouts has me intrigued. Some of the WIERDEST tornado warnings I have ever seen. Nothing visible on any velocity scans, storms in Colorado looked tiny. Yet there are lots of reports (from stormchasers even!) of "LARGE" tornados in Colorado tonight.
------------------------------------

So, rest easy, Kevin! I wasn't talking about you or your operation in the Colorado comment, I was talking about NWS. I did enjoy watching your stream yesterday. Hope that clears that up. Sorry to hear about your vehicle failure and hope you get back out there soon.

Best,

Joe

Oops, last part should have read, "rest easy, Kenny" not Kevin.

When I buy a chase vehicle, it will be at a discount "hail sale", so worrying about nice paint won't be an issue :)

Looks like the cumulus are beginning to tower in southwest MN right now. If storms can initiate and move east into the better environment in southeast MN they may have a chance! Shear is quite weak that far west just east of the cold front right now.

Watching the clouds tower up around here. Heading out to Sleepy Eye for dinner at 7:30pm after wife gets off work. Think I will take camera and camcorders along. Have not
had to travel to get any action around here. Have a video
on YouTube that shows a few years worth of storms that I
have captured right from my parking lot and back deck.
Just click on my name to watch it.

Joe:

Sorry for the misunderstanding... we've had a few people questioning our NWS reports (or reports made by others watching the cam) so I guess we jumped the gun.Sorry... its been a hell of a weekend for us
