News DetailTornado warnings in south-central ND, north-central SD!

Despite the strong cap and high temperature/dewpoint spreads, supercells have initiated just east of the surface low in north-central SD, and tornado warnings have been issued for these storms. Until now, the cloud bases have likely been too high for tornadoes, however, anvil shadows appear to be working their magic, and the dewpoints are on the rise rapidly into the upper 60s. As the lower atmosphere is cooling slightly, winds are beginning to back to a southeasterly direction in the inflow region of the storms. The surface map below, as of 7:50 pm CDT shows the higher dewpoints and backed winds. In other words, the tornado potential is increasing BIG TIME! If these storms can remain discrete, large tornadoes are possible given the very high low-level shear values. HUGE MISTAKE by tornadovideos.net not to be there!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA;lfkajs;dlkfj We must have lost the edge

This is painful to watch. There is a huge tornado outbreak every August, and it looks like we missed it.
Tv.net is blaming Matt Chatelain for this one!!!
Matt Chatelain IS NOT RESPOSIBLE!!!
breif tornado touchdowns now reported in north central south dakota. Brings back memories of August 24th, 2006!
MAJOR decoupling going on right now in north-central SD. Dewpoint has risen from near 60 to the upper 60s. First wind at aberdeen vad is up to 20 knots. Shear is not quite there, but another 5-10 knots at 500 mb and we're going to have a massive hose.
I'm not going to feel so bad about Alberta having frost warnings then... Aaaaaaa - so not ready for Winter :(
:)
i had to have a look at severe studios livecam, which to be honest and not to disrespect them, is verrryy choppy...but dont worry boys, im stayin monogomous to tornadovideos.net...!!!! that cell in mobridge is looking pretty sweet...and maybe a potential producer...
according to SPC's storm reports there was a brief spinup 18 miles west of mobridge...
Yes Brandon it is choppy, but consider this. They are streaming live, fairly good quality video to your computers from the middle of nowhere. But don't worry TV.net, like Brandon, I'll never leave you :)
Interesting that there is no current tornado warning with the Mobridge storm, It looks the best it has the entire evening with a decent couplet and amazing reflectivity hook. best environment its been in all day too.
The southern cell split and has an intense couplet!!!
Don't worry, we'll stream video next year..but the SevereStudios cam is really fun to watch! They are just north of an incredible wall cloud...All I've seen so far is right to left motion though, and it looks outflow-ish right now. That could change really fast though!
SD cookin too right now .......
Yeah, the motion is pretty intense on that wall could they are watching!
They have been in bad coverage area - They use their phone
The cell just went TW!
cool, I can't wait to go streaking nude in front of tv.net's live stream webcam next year
hey connor...i totally realize the point you made and i think they are doing a great job of giving us a front row seat of the mobridge supercell...as im typing this in my girlfriends apt in downtown red deer, alberta!...as with reed, it is alot of fun to watch...textbook clear slot near that wall cloud as i type this!
I agree - Nice stream so far of that wall cloud.
Does anyone know why after 20 seconds of streaming my media player goes dark and it says "media changing"?
The cam went down Connor.
Not sure Connor... happening to me as well.
Thanks David. I thought I was the only one having this problem.
I guess we can only pray!!
is the southern split that reed mentioned which is heading north-east...towards the mobridge supercell... going to converge!?!?
Reed, I feel for ya buddy.
I'm watching the big one on grlevel, it just got a great hook and the couplet is sweetening up... but it's about to munch the left split... quit banging yer head against the wall I can hear it up here!
bummer... right when they were getting something interesting
They're done for the evening, folks
9:10 PM
South of Selby on Highway 83. Check Engine light and battery light came on and we are done. Serpentine belt broke on chase vehicle. Just got cored by golf-ball size hail and 50 mph winds. Will be spending the night in Mobridge, SD and hoping there is a car repair shop open tomorrow. Sorry for the data and stream issues. Hope you saw the tornado and major grass fires we had earlier. Please donate to our Chase Fund if you want to help us! :) --Kory
OUCH!!
Sounds like a ford!! hehe
DAMN!!!! Reed I am sooo not happy for you not chasing that event lol.... (shakes head)
Maybe Reed made the right call after all. Has there been anything worth filming yet? I dunno
Quite a storm just passed through southern Saskatchewan with pea sized hail, immense down pour and extreme wind gusts. It lasted about 20mins. We followed the storm from the rear and we believe we saw what could be called water spouts even though they can only happen over bodies of water; but they were three quarters to the ground and back up in a matter of seconds. There didn't seem to be any debree so the funnel looked quite white...not sure what it was. Weather warnings and watches are still in effect at this moment for southwest, south central and southeast Saskatchewan
Reed, im glad you didn't go. I mean, today was a bad day for anything worth filming. I remember signing online this morning, my brother said that today was a bad day and he would have stayed home. He said this all day and it looks like that would have been best. Be glad you stayed in! See ya man.
I think everyone should watch the complex of storms in South Dakota - The Numbers off the Mesoanalis ARE AMAZING! Supercell Composte 44. Sig Tornado 8. And some other things.
I think if it can organize, we could have a wedge, in say Minnehaha up to the Moody county area.
Dang, a busted fan belt. That'll sure as heck kill a chase.
How's it looking out there now Reed? Still fairly convinced you should be up there now? ;)
Hey!! I'm back! what's the info on my area???? looks like storms approachin'!! let me now!
See anything interesting out there AJ ole bud?
I hope so Brady, you guys can use the rain!
No Joe, it's been quiet out here on the plains. Maybe a pop up storm with penny size hail at the most, but nothing too exciting :( I just wish I had been in the Dakotas today.
What's up with our northerly friends?
Looks like some things popping up in NW North Dakota(?)
Yeah, I see that... any active warnings out?
has the storms in the Dakota's pussed out too much to terrorize us here in Duluth?
I don't know. I just got my GRL3 tonight and am sitting here scratching my jaw wondering how many weeks or months it's gonna take out of my life learning this sucker
Yeah... I'm a noob to the GRL3 too=(
I like it though!!
Where is the "GRL3 for Idiots" book??
haha. Yeah, it took me forever to figure out my SwiftWx program... heck, I'm still learning little things. lol.
I watched Kory and SevereStudios live feed off and on, like back when they were showing the large wall cloud. Other than that, it hasn't worked for me.
I get how it works... i just have to learn how to read radar!
I understanD marine radar pretty good!
It wasn't you, their feed was cutting in and out the whole time. Perhaps they were in a bad coverage area. It finally crapped out when they had that interesting wall cloud going but I don't think we missed too much
lol. Oh ok Joe, that's good to know, I guess. But the "Large Wedge Tornado" postings kept me busy, trying to find a hook on radar :D I was virtual chasing, to make myself feel less guilty.
it was a month or so ago that they said "Large Tornado" in Colorado but it turned out to be a goofy landspout or something, so i'm not sure how much to read into their verbage...
Joe, start with site tab at top left, select by state and site.
Basic screen is Base reflectivity 1. You can switch to storm relative velocity 1 to see couplets and such. All the others (2-4) are just different tilts of the radar beam (higher). Basically all I ever use is base reflectivity and storm relative velocity. Then you can use your icons on the right to see if there are any meso markers or tvs markers on the storm, also storm motion, warnings, hail, etc. If you are using a velocity scan at the bottom right it will show you the maximum wind speeds in any spot in the radar beam, blowing towards the radar and away from it, which is kinda cool if there is a nice couplet on the screen, you can see just how strong the winds are in it.
Ok that was way longer than I intended and I sound like a snob, sorry...
Yeah Joe, no kidding. I've finally learned to take into account different nomenclature from different people. To some, a waterspout is a large tornado. To ME, a repeat 1.7 mile wide EF-5 wedge is a large tornado. lol.
Joe if you are still there try going to Sioux Falls radar and playing with it. It has hail markers, a meso marker is on there right now, storm tracks, warnings, etc.
Hee hee the part I like best is using the little microscope icon to draw squares around the storms and zoom in just like the meteos do on TV, lol
Thanks Andrew. That helps a lot! I've been educating myself from the ground up, have figured out things like chaser etiquette, the do's and don'ts when around tornadoes, visual supercell structure identification, and other things. What I want to work on now is using the software tools to focus in on localized areas, in-the-field adjustments, etc. Hard work but hey there are 6 or 7 months until Spring.
Hehe Andrew!! Well played! good show chap!! I kinda got 'er figured out now!! I just needed to play with it a lil!! pretty simple!
Yeah and Brady, fire it up about 4 pm tomorrow, we are in for some fireworks, I might even give it a better nader chance over here tomor-oops, it's today- than yesterday in South Dakota.
Doesn't look like any insane naders but there will be a lot of outflow boundaries and other such things around and high dewpoints, cape, all that good stuff. I think Reed should get in the car and come chase it to make up for his lapse in judgement last night.
Reed, remember, MN ALWAYS gets a tornado outbreak in early August. It's a RULE of nature. Trust your gut. C'mon up.
any nader would be a bonus in my book!! I just want nice pics of whatever!! Cool clouds, rain shafts, rainbows( not saying I swing that way cuz I don't) even sunsets!! I really want funnels though..
and yeah...Reed should jump in his bucket and high tail it up here!!
I wonder who has the record for seeing tornadoes in the most number of states... since they supposedly happen in all of them
I just saw the Manchester video on the National Geographic Channel!!!
I don't know Joe... I've seen quite a few in my short time, in Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado... I wouldn't have the slightest clue which state would win that award...
Connor watches the National Geographic Channel on Friday nights!!
hehe, who am I to talk, posting here
Yeah!! I have buddys all over callin me to come out drinkin'... and I'm here BS'n With You weather freaks!
I need an Eval next week!! JK!
Well I saw the word "Tornado" on the menu on TV and, of course, went for it. :(
10 minutes til the next Tropical Weather Discussion!! So long...
Wow, that's awesome, three states already. I'm bummed I didn't get started earlier but it's not like tornadoes are going extinct or anything. Should be out next Spring wearing my doppler diapers :-)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Read the last line!!!
HIGH AMPLITUDE TROPICAL WAVE IS JUST MOVING OUT OF THE AFRICAN
COAST. IT AXIS IS ALONG 15W S OF 22N WITH A 1008 MB LOW PRES

19W. SOME OF THE COMPUTER MODELS DEVELOP THIS LOW INTO A
TROPICAL CYCLONE AS IT MOVES WWD ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.
sorry. i'm excited
Hehe!!
Bring on the hurricanes. At least with hurricanes (unlike tornados) there is no confusion. You see them out on the ocean days in advance, everybody can watch them form, and the whole world knows if/when they are coming ashore! Following hurricanes is cake compared to tornados.
Ok. Once the newest satellite image comes out for that area of the Atlantic I'm gonna get some much needed rest. Goodnight everyone.
Connor out.
Awesome!! Finally, a chance for some tropical severe weather! Connor, I'm mildly jealous.
Yeah, same for me. I'll be online for a little bit longer, than I'm catching some shut eye. For now, just holler.
"Once the newest satellite image comes out for that area of the Atlantic I'm gonna get some much needed rest"
I probably would have been better saying, "Once Hell freezes over..."
GRLEVEL's showing a buncha crap at my backdoor!!
I missed the out brake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am soooooooooooo mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks good for Minneapolis later today.... we also had one hell of an MCS come through here last night at about 4am, the lighting was so intense, at one point I dident think there was going to be a house or tree on my entire block that would not be struck!!
Hey travis click my name for a very funney video
We finally got a lil rain!! not enough though! not much lightning this morning, I'm getting excited here hoping things get ugly later!!
Could be a nice little surprise down in the southeast corner for ya today..

Brady,
I'll never look at an MCS the same way again, that was wild last night. Close to 60 mph wind I would guess. Never seen so much cg lightning in my life. One hit about 200 yards away. And we got RAIN.

Here is a better review of that book mentioned yesterday that isn't as silly as that one from the UK newspaper, fwiw
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/09/AR2007080901892.html
Hehe!! Lucky you!! After a 12pk, I couldn't keep my eyes open. I kinda missed the show! It didn't get real bad here anyway!!
What's on tap for later??
Winnipegonians or Winnipegasauruses or whatever you call yourselves, there are some stories about yr. storm in the newspaper today
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/
damn you boys in minnesota might be lucky tonight!!! adequate cape, extreme helicity values in the central region of the state and a nice 500mb flow according to the wrf's for 18z tonight...and dewpoints are already in the high 60's!!! not to shabby so far id say...
Windom, MN looks like a good place to be at 00z.
But it's 1340 miles from here, I'm not going. :)
Andrew should head down for this one... Rochester - La Crosse area perhaps
Hey Brandon how goes.
Chilly one this mornin.
1.4C here at 6:10

morning PB...i wouldnt complain if this august was a scorcher for obvious reasons, and have the weather were experiencing now where it belongs...in september!!!!
im heading up to st.paul today to go camping untill monday night, so no virtual chasing for me...good luck guys/ladies in minnesota tonight...and PB...no need for campfire for warmth, thats what 5th wheels are for and great pictures of august 10th of last year...
take care all...
As soon as Reed gets back from his brunch at the pancake house or wherever he is, maybe he'll give us the outlook. Hoping to see some action for MN today!
Campfires are the best way to dispose of all those beer cans!! hehe

Just for the record, my earlier comment (above) about the "large tornado" in Colorado was in reference to an alert put out by NWS last month, and was not in reference to any other chase operation. See longer post by me in the Aug 11 blog comments.
