Supercells have already initiated northwest and southwest of Edmonton, with the two most intense cells just north of Whitecourt and just west of Drayton Valley, AB. Given sufficient wind shear and instability just to the east of these storms, they do have a tornado potential as the move ENE at 30 mph. Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for these storms, but I would not be surprised if they will be upgraded to tornado warnings at any time. Stay tuned for updates.

im heading for that cell near drayton.
im heading for that cell near drayton.
That sounds like a Johnny Cash song.
"I'm heading for that cell near drayton,
My mother done brought me up wrong,
Don't know how long she'll be waitin'
The warden said it could be long"
LOL. Good luck
Wow.
The cell just south of Edson went ape in the last half hour. The one west of Drayton. That thing is looking mean. Brandon looks like you should check that one out, don't worry about chasing it- it's chasing you!
Good thing that cell wasn't near Athabasca or Westaskiwin. Not even Johnny could have rhymed something with those towns. That's why Johnny wasn't Canadian, by the way.
TWC say that right now there is a waterspout over maryland!!! don't know if there is any damage.
I really hope edmonton gets hit again.
im dales son dales in front of a wall coud mamatus in front native reserve 100k west of edmonton going NE slowly.
reed, if you can phone dale now lots of rotation
Yay edmontons in severe tstorm watch.
If you have not noticed we have added a live chat feature to the site. You can open it via the top menu bar. Try it out and let us know what you think.

Jason, re: chat

I am west of Edmonton, I just got some pictures and wondered how I can post them...or can I email them?? Pretty awesome clouds!

Chat not working for me either, nothing after 3:27pm shows up.
Kelly, one way is to go to tinypic.com, upload the pics from your PC, then post the link they give you here
Kelly Is there any thing tornadic? the only thing I know is that u are under a sever thunderstorm watch.
Nothing severe, just really odd looking clouds. I will post the link.
With all due respect I think chat is sometimes overrated. The upside is realtime chattiness, but the downside is that it diverts posts away from here
Good grief a new storm is firing up right over Edson every half hour. I can't believe how fast they are going up. I sure hope someone's getting good pics of this I want to see them!

This storm is changing fast!
Classic shot, love the blue color
Andrew,
"very cool mammatus Kelly!"
I tried that line once and got slapped.
LOL. I KNEW THAT ONE WAS COMING.
lol!
go in the live chat people. i sick of redreshing the page
The cell southwest of Athabasca might be producing. The latest radar update shows what looks like a killer hook on it (I can't read the EC radar very well but looks like a classic hook to me).
Nice pics Kelly
Where were they taken?
Looks like that cell might just miss Drayton Valley to the north. The airport(CER3) is ~4 miles north of town.
Hope it misses, sure looks nasty.
11km NW of Onoway - right above the house
I took a pic sort of like that about 10 days ago. This was the sky over Vermilion (about 200km east of Edmonton). The colours were really nice because it happened right at sunset.
It's no tornado, and the storm actually missed us by about 10 km, but at the very least I hope you enjoy them.

Looks like it Andrew. There have been quite a few frames with hooks on the end of that storm.
It's been over dense forest most of the time it's been on radar and it's just crossing the last road it will see for a few hours.
Might be why there have been no tornado reports.
Is Dale following this one or is he out by Drayton I wonder.
A MASSIVE LINE IS APPROACHING NORMAN!!! I'M ABOUT TO SEE MY FIRST OKLAHOMAN ACTION!
Also, your roof is caving in, Oklahoma beer regulations are terrible, and your roommates rooked me in poker.
PB would be interesting after this is all over to check out sattelite pics of that area. We had a half mile wide F3 go through northern Wisconsin earlier this year and the sattelite pic is here: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/Image/grb/track_AquaMODIS.jpg
im close to this cell by drayton valley...its iINCREDIBLE!
this is his son again
dale is out by drayton when i last talked to him
he was by a reserve i posted the info earlier
All - Chat is now fixed - enjoy!
To All,
Just so you know, I put dibs on the color green in the tv.net chatroom. Nobody else can use it. I am in the Emerald City, after all, and it's possible I am part Irish as well. So, don't get me and my lawyer after you by trying to shark that color away from me.
PS, nice work Jason!
Barrhead is located 20 minutes further N of us...is the storm intense in that area?
We are under tornado watch, so is Drayton!
this is dalez son again he just saw a funnel and it looks to touchdown near drayton valley
Drayton Valley - Devon - Rimbey - Pigeon Lake

Tornado watch for
Drayton Valley - Devon - Rimbey - Pigeon Lake continued
Persons in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions. Watch for updated statements.
Please refer to the latest public forecasts for further details and continue to monitor the situation through your local radio and television stations or Weatheradio.
I live in Drayton !!!
CRAZY storm last night looks like where in for it again! Several districts where out of power last night and downpours and extreemly frequent lighting. As July 31 approaches many Edmontonians are getting jittery because of past cases and this weather is very similer to the fateful day.
LOL nice Joe Surfer
Yes heather please watch the storm carefully and take shelter if anything touches down. Also take a few pics if its safe to do so ;)
It's hard to see anything from where our house sits. I keep coming back here for updates from the fellow who is chasing the storm. We are south west of the airport, RR80 & Twp 484.
my sister is chasing it as well. I'm feeding her updates from the doppler. Well know if something touches down.
Hey dale you should call 630 CHED and let them know when you see funnel clouds. They will notify enviroment Canada and let people know. 1-800-663-0630
Hey Reed,
How does the live chat work?
I just got off the phone with Brandon and he saw the funnel near Drayton as well. He said he couldn't see a ground circulation but the funnel was at least half way to the ground.
Congrats Brandon and Dale on a successful chase!
Note to anyone who may lose a home in a tornado.
Come one come all to the Sunny city of Wetaskiwin.
We have seen only 2 storms this month.
Warning: weather may change eventually.
Please note you may encounter severe locust clouds, cockroaches, dragonflies, rats and other plagues that come with our super capped micro climate.
I just came back from watching that supercell. Got some pictures too :)
LOL an little Advertisement of how boring the weather here is. But all the dragonflies covering thing is neat. The grasshoppers are exploding in population. and all the mosquitoes have been wiped out by predators. The mouse population is ridiculously high, and other pests are getting worse.
Like Perfect weather for sports all day and night all summer bring the bug spray and a big can of raid
2 storms
The one with the F1 tornado
and the one with the flooding downpour
That it nothing else
I may soon have some spectacular locust swarms for ya
In places the hoppers cover some back roads.
If you like fireflies they are everywhere.
But I run into mice every time I head to a nearby feild
This is what happens when you get hot humid weather and
no storms to control the insect populations

what a day! 2 supercells back to back and a nicely sculpted funnel...!
hey gang...im back...gonna send reed the pics to post here soon.
Lets see some pics Brandon and Dale!
I couldn't go all the way up today and was really hoping you guys got some good shots.
I watched the backside from 50 miles away for a while but it was so darned hazy the pics didn't come out great.
What an impressive thing it was though.
It overshot it's anvil countless times, you just knew something was happening in there.
Beaut!
I have never seen hail fail in the form of chips. I was outside when the hail began last night. It was coming down in a flat form instead of balls, it was about the size of puzzle pieces. Didn't last long before it changed into marbles and drove me back in the house. I watched the lightening over Edmonton for what seemed like forever last night. Very nice pictures BTW!
