News DetailSevere weather, isolated tornadoes possible today in southeast SK/southwest MB

The same trough responsible for yesterday's supercells in Alberta will be moving across the central Canadian Prairies today (Tuesday), providing the necessary ingredients for supercells and even isolated tornadoes across the red-shaded area above. A rather strong cap will be in place today over this region, so there is a chance that storms will not initiate in the best environment for tornadoes. However, if an isolated storm develops in southeast Saskatchewan or southwest Manitoba (later in the evening and overnight) tomorrow, there will be a chance for tornadoes. Stay tuned for updates!

OK well according to your forecast there it'll be in the Yorkton area...should I be charging up my camera batteries to get ready for some crazy storm???
Well just got home from chasin the storms up here worst that happened was golfball sized hail in on area I was told that by EC when I was talkin to them. BUT what a night for lightning photography my next passion got some great pics of cloud to ground as well as in the clouds amazing likely got 20 great pics was well worth it but made for a late night
You know, I've been noticing everytime there is a major severe weather outbreak anticipated, there is always a STRONG cap!!!
Hi.......love those pics !! Do you know if we will get anything in Moose Jaw today. Its 8:30 and the humidity has been nuts all morning......I really think you guys should hit full time in Canada.....start a tv series that would be awesome....
It also seem like we get severe storms in area we don't expect. like alberta for example.
EC GEM models say more storms today for alberta
Rob are you gonna post links for you pictures?
Can some please check this link?

I'm seeing this everyday, and I don't know what it is. It's a line west of Calgary, lots of color, it stays stationary. is it an anomoly or good old canada doppler radar technology?
Yep just gettin functioning here will get em sized and up shortly
Rene, To me that stationary line west of calgary is convection or storms that continuesly develop and disapate over the mountains..... Am I wrong??
Alberta is canada's tornado alley. Thats where I want to be... I am in Winnipeg however, and the temperature here is +34 degrees celcius, humid, and a frontal system is going to move through the region tomorrow.
Do you think that storms may become severe near winnipeg tomorrow?
I do not think this is a line of storms on the foothills. More likely to be groud clutter. Could also be forest fires in the region or some kind of barrier the mountains are producing.
Hi Rene...that stationary line is actually a mountain ridge that the radar beam makes contact with west of the radar site. The radar beam is emitted at a slight angle with the ground, so it's distance from the ground increases with distance from the radar..but this ridge must be relatively close to the radar site and very high!
It seems that supercells develop every day in Alberta this time of year! the easterly upslope flow and good moisture are certainly the culprits.
You make sense Reed... You know way more about that stuff than I do!
Thanks guys for the explanation.
Good thinking Zack...one thing about meteorology is that there often isn't right or wrong answer!
SKgirl...things definitely could get interesting in your area towards the MB border if the cap breaks.
CAP? How does that work in relation to severe storms?
Rene, The CAP is a layer of warm air that surpresses thunderstorm development, otherwise killing the chances of storms forming. You DONT want a strong CAP if you want widespread storms...
This cap "warm air" is a layer above the storm clouds
I realy need to go back to school to learn this stuff..
I still have those links that was provided to me a couple of weeks ago. Hadn't had a chance to study them
Here is some links to my lightning pics from storm last night

Hmmmm wondering if Im gonna take a direct hit if those storms move further east....Praying for rain cuz Im melting ...however as much as I would love to see a good storm...the tornados can stay where they are...lol I have no basement!!!
What about the closet or bathroom those are effecient shelters to Amanda.... Just cover yourself w/ a mattress or pillows!!!
Already have my spot picked out in my sons bedroom....lol...fairly deep closet that goes under the stairs to go upstairs...lol...either that or im heading to a friends place if theres tornado warnings for here....normally Id be out chasing but my son tends to hold me back a bit...lol
Yeah, My spot is the closet too.... But most of the time out in the yard filming it our just watching it!!!
Great pics Rob....makes me realize how much I really need a new camera:-S
Rene: The capping inversion or cap is a relatively warm layer air just above the surface that acts to suppress storm development. As surface heating increases, the cap slowly weakens and if it isn't too strong (i.e. the air is not too warm in the cap level), then it can be broken allowing for storms to initiate. Today's is rather strong, but there should be enough surface heating and moisture to break it.
Too much heat if you ask me....lol Im soon gonna be a puddle on the floor....lol dont mind the heat but the humidity is the killer....
Zack...lol if i stood outside and took pictures knowing my luck Id get zapped by lightening...lol
Reed....would the lakes have any effect on whether the storm disapates if it happens...or could it intesifly?
When is all the storms expected to begin increase because im watching radar and i see nothing??
Yeah, If the lightning gets way to intense I back off and head indoors.
Thanks Reed
Some goodies brewing up in the Alberta foothills again.
hello Reed, do you think there is a chance of storms near winnipeg tuesday afternoon? The forecast is calling for a 60% chance of showers or thunderstorms. It is going to be hot and himid with a temp near 33Celcius.
Amanda - Very large lakes can have a negative effect on storms if their surface temperature is too cool. The water will tend to keep the air temperature cooler which limits instability.
Matt - Storms should fire in the mid to late afternoon time frame. This early in the day, it's better for it to be clear so that surface heating can be maximized. You need the heat to get extreme instability and to weaken the cap sufficiently for thunderstorm development.
How's the radar looking for northern Alberta storms today?
Looks like storms are trying to get going over my region at this hour.... View from outside shows towering cumulus to the east and south of me. And radar shows developing showers to the east of me moving to the SW at 10 mph...
Well I'm going to go take a swim so see ya later...lol.
An example of warm lakes is pigeon lake in alberta
normaly the water is cold, but when I swam in it on monday it was very warm(around 26C or 78F).
It may explain the severe storms in Edmonton an Wetaskiwin .
The lake had a huge plume of moisture rising from it before the storm.
visability was very low facing the sun over the lake
DJ...the models are showing storms for Winnipeg late tonight/early tomorrow morning...but with the instability in place, I would not be surprised to see some airmass thunderstorms in your area by peak heating..but nothing very severe.
Most of the intense storms will be well to your west in SK and extreme western MB..if the cap breaks of course
The Edson-Drayton Valley area has sure been the place to be this summer.
Almost every day in July they have had T-storms out there.
Great Pics Rob! what kinda camera did ya use?
allright thanks, it is hot here. +34 degrees celcius... dunno how much that is in fahrenheit.
cheers!
This is such an interesting site!

Sup homes? How she blows today? The wind I mean...lol. Just viewing the rad and see some large development southern alberta man, am I seein thangs, or is there some brewing goin on boys?
Looks like there are 2 huge Mesoscale Convective Systems in eastern europe. (click my name for sat pic)
Yah PB maybe next year ill go camp in a tent or somthing all summer in the edson/drayton valley area...some storms coming up there now, wonder how much they will develop
Any ppl out there? Just want confo on my obser, am I drinkin or do I see it?
Chip there looks to be some but edson/drayton valley seems to have some more.
Think I will go have a look at that thing between Sundre and Rocky and see if anything develops.
That should kill it!
Thanks man, just jiggin here waitin for somethin to pop.
Hey everyone..... Just got back from swimming in my pool and had to get due to all the storms that are QUICKLY going up all around me!! Took a look at radar and it shows scattered showers and storms developing rapidly.
Nice zack... what area are you in?
tornado warning for west-central florida
For which counties?
oo they just took away the warning now.... -_-
that's too bad, I have family down there, I'll call them up and see if they can grab the cam and shoot some video
Sorry Mike, I was busy w/ something... Mike I live in Oklahoma City in Oklahoma. I took a look on radar again and the storms are moving NW towards me!!! The storms are quickly intensifying With hail developing in the core. I also see a gustfront developing as well! I'll keep you posted...lol.

Extremely high temperatures are providing the potential for severe thunderstorm development this afternoon continuing into this evening.
This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.
Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements. If threatening weather approaches take immediate safety precautions.
Very high temperatures across southern Saskatchewan are providing the potential for severe thunderstorm development this afternoon into this evening. The development of thunderstorms is by no means a certainty...However, a cold front passing through the region may trigger thunderstorms this afternoon...And given the extreme heat in the area, severe thunderstorms are a distinct possibility.
Reed/Joel
There is an extreme temperature difference between Swift Current Area and Moose Jaw Area. MJ is approx 80mins E of Swift Current. The MJ area and even more eastern have extreme temperature differences of 10+ C. Is this huge wall being defined by the Jet stream or is this the start of the Severe weather in Southeastern Sask.
Extreme high temperatures is right! Right now its 32, but with humidex 44, and supposed to raise to 34 (can imagine humidex then if it does). we now have 60% chance of storms...I'll keep my eye out to the west, Foam Lake is about 1.5 hrs away.
UPDATE: The storms are pulse type around my region, which means they weaken and then quickly strengthen. The main threats w/ the storms right now is small hail torrential rain an deadly cloud to ground lightning. Gusty winds are developing within the storm as well. The storms are expected to become more widespread late this afternoon....

Radar indicates isolated thunderstorms developing along the foothills. Some of these storms may become severe producing large hail.
Alberta was upgraded to warning
Two nasty little storms in Alberta.
One heading for Ponoka and the other aimed at Sylvan Lake/Red Deer.
I saw a wall cloud form up briefly under the northernmost one at 3:20 local.
Going for a look at the south one.
There are two impressive supercell storms heading for the Red Deer area. The storms further south are becoming elongated and look somewhat outflow-ish.
Just to update, watch for our area too..and it got hotter! 34, feels like 47..
Actually make that a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, it's thundering here right now...keep you guys updated!
Hey guys and gals.. i am leaving to go camping in Rock yMountain House right away.. any tornadic activity threat or should the severe storms stay to the hail and dealy lightning, etc. department.. i am staying in a trailer so thats why im wondering.. anyone who knows give me an answer back reall quickly!! pleez
Reed/Joel
What is the latest word on the development of these storms. Any of the models now denying any possible supercell activity?
OK the storm may slightly hit us, I'm hearing a lot more rumbling...right now we're the only area in SK with a warning. The storm is now 10 minutes north of us (but unfortunately there's too many trees blocking most of my view). I was able to get ap hoto of the height:

Cors: The Camera I use is Canon Rebel XTI 10mp it does great pictures very very happy with it
But it is not sealed very well as far as dust and water I am hearing great things about the Pentax K10d very well sealed and awesome pictures maybe the better choice for doin storm photo. Also The Pentax is a more rugged built camera.
Storm warning have now been issued north of Glasgow and these cells are making there way over the SaskCan/US Border, heading north eastern towards the City of Regina. Several cells are developing East southeast of this location.
Sorry guys, just got in and Reed's out on the golf course.
Alberta has a couple good storms again. The one near Red Deer looks most promising, but it's getting late. Unfortunately the surface maps are down right now so I have no clue what kind of environment it's in. The stuff near Drumheller looks outflow dominant. And there's some new development going up just west of Calgary, possibly along an outflow boundary. Don't think the tornado potential is too high today in this area, so probably mainly a large hail/wind threat in Alberta.
Looks like the cap has done a pretty good job of holding in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Looks like there's a storm trying to go up west of Swan River. Not having too much luck yet. I'm not seeing anything else at all. There's some storms coming out of Montana, but they look like they're struggling a little bit. Surface moisture is limited in that area, but get's very impressive farther north. WOW, dewpoints in the upper 70's and lower 80's is high for the Gulf Coast. Looks like the cap may prevent what was otherwise a pretty good setup. I'll keep an eye on things the next couple of hours to see if anything changes.
Joel
The storm that hit "north of Red Deer" yesterday actually hit Blackfalds... I am in Red Deer and we didn't get anything right in the city yesterday. A coworker of mine who lives in Blackfalds says they got small hail. And no, there was no Tornado warning or watch issued, only a severe thunderstorn warning.
On another note, we JUST had a rather dark shelf cloud come over Red Deer but no precipitation... winds picked up and it was rotating... we're only in a thunderstorn watch at the moment. It is moving slightly east/south east, possibly towards Stettler.
Any word on Drumheller? Looks pretty impressive there.. check out the radar..

Anyone near the drumheller storm??? if so get some pictures please!!!
tornado on the ground - drumheller
It actually touch down??? where do you hear it?
Reed- there's a pretty amazing thunderstorm over Calgary right now (and tornado warnings north of), and I got a great video as it was coming in of a very nice shelf cloud. (At least I think that's what it was, I'm still new at this.) Maybe a small funnel that lasted about thirty seconds, as well. Would you be interested in seeing the video and some still shots if I can upload it to my computer?
On the ground? And according to Environment Canada, Drumheller is only on a tornado watch .. Warning ended for Rosebud ..warning still continues for Wheatland County..

According to the radar, everything has moved east of Drumheller now..
Diana please!!!!! upload your video....always love to see videos
Well, apparantly the storm that passed just south of Drumheller got pretty interesting. Watching it on radar it almost appears the circulation would've occured on the se side of the storm, and it never really looked like a "classic" supercell. Hope somebody got some good pics/video of the storm.
I havent read a post from Dale or Biggyd in a bit maybe one of them was on it?
Anyone know where they are from?
they are both from edmonton area.. i dont think they could make it in time like 4, 5 hour driver
Lots of storms popping up around calgary
son of a %$#&*@#'/ just got home from work lol. figuires. joel, they never look classic in alberta...the hardest thing is to chase here... what happened here last thursdauy...happens all the time. and no i didnt get anything..just heard about it now.
Now one moving straight north up the QE2.
Crazy stuff.
its hard because its so damn big.
Yah PB i noticed that one...wierd eh
for all the hype about sask nothing much is happrning..
i just talked with global news..ec gives the warning...not watch when there is no confirmation what so ever.
strnage.. you look at the infared and the clouds barrly spike at all...looks like smoke from sat.
WOW
major post frontal activity in Alberta.
Looks like the cap has held all day in SK...it definitely came close to breaking.
I'm moving to Alberta immediately...Oklahoma is nothing compared to up there!
Diana...if you can upload the video I'd definitely be interested in seeing it...please email to reed@tornadovideos.net. Thanks!!!
Nice line moving towards yorkton sask
Actually it may go north of it
suppost to be low to mid 30's and humid for central alberta... hope some more storms pop up this weekend...and zack what happened with that storm? get any pics
Really intense lightning right now......its cool
opps meant to say in Moose Jaw
URGENT UPDATE!!!!!!!!!
SEVERE thunderstorm in Canora, started at Good Spirit Lake at about 9:15. Just got to the house. Cloud split into 3. Photos of it before it hit (will upload when safe).
INTENSE lightning, thunder, just starting to rain, hail (pea sized) and winds has been reported..Lights flickering.
MOST IMPORTANT: Driving home from lake 20 mins ago....MAJOR lowering to the south, huge wall cloud, and in front of us was TWO FUNNELS!! In the same cloud. First on the right...lowered down and went back up. Shortly after the 2nd funnel on the left, went halfway down to the ground and even had some strength but went back up.
All for now. Posting fast in case power goes up. will try keep updated
I hope all the severe weather everyone is seeing (hail of any size, wind greater than 60 km/h, flooding rains, tornadoes or funnel clouds) is getting reported. It helps the warnings get focussed better. (Reed, if posting the number is bad, please delete this; if you don't mind, could you make another post out of it too?)
