Pictures of a beautiful LP supercell just north of Red Deer, Alberta taken by Elaine Cripps:

Pictures of a shelf cloud taken near Edmonton, AB by Dale from late Monday evening:

Severe thunderstorms pounded area under Edmonton and also just north of Red Deer, Alberta this evening. An INCREDIBLE low-precipitation "LP" supercell developed southwest of Red Deer and tracked slowly northeastward...likely producing very large hail and possible funnels. Further north, severe thunderstorms moved through Edmonton during late evening, bringing hail and strong straight-line winds and even possible funnels over South Edmonton. Here is the radar image from when the supercell was at peak intensity:

As of 9:45 pm MT, severe thunderstorm warnings will still in effect for the Edmonton, AB area, as a broken line of elevated storms was moving east off the mountains. Shown below is the watch/warning display from Environment Canada at the above time. I'll hopefully be posting pictures of the Red Deer supercell, along with pictures from the Edmonton storms shortly...the structure was TEXTBOOK!

Great photos Dale!

Yes amazing light show going down now...
We go hail!!!!! anybody know about tornados coming now????
If any of you want i'll show you pics that i got from that shelf cloud. Also some hail pics,
You in leduc or north south east west of it Candy?
I am a little southeast of it...just outside rollyview. That was intense! it was like daylight outside, hail and crazy winds!!! it has gotten quiet again, but still lightning! Sorry to keep asking so many questions just I am home alone and 8 and a half months pregnant and a little paranoid!! So bear with me Mike! lol
lol candy. Grats on the baby, anyway yeah im pretty happy we got such an intense storm.
Dont worry about it!!
lol thanks Kenny! EC just issued a warning for my area yet again...so I guess I will just have to keep my eyes on here and see what you guys are saying! You seem to be more accurate than any other sources!
Kenny i would love to see your pictures
Ok sure mike, how should i send them, Email or msn?...
Wow those pics are amazing!!!!
Kenny send them to mezura777@hotmail.com. thanks
Np i'll send them shortly
Also thanks Heidi for checking out that link. The last thing NZ needs right now is heavy rain especially in the upper north island. However i do hope that it produces an impressive storm.
Cheers...
Check out the pictures of the Red Deer supercell taken by Lainey...I just posted the link above. AMAZING structure!
Looks like there could be a funnel in one of the later pictures.
Candy...these storms are rather strong supercells and could produce hail up to loonie size and strong straight-line winds. Tornadoes can't be ruled out, but right now, the storms do not look tremendously organized.
The models did not forecast the CAPE and low-level shear very well today...but I just glanced at the RUC analysis and the low-level shear is analyzed stronger than previously forecast.

Does anyone know if tornado warnings were issued for the Red Deer cell earlier this evening? I was away from the computer for a few hours..unfortunately!
Wow, those pictures of that LP supercell are BEAUTIFUL! I need to chase something like that IMMEDIATELY!!! THe only LP storm i've seen/chased that looked better than that was the NW Oklahoma May 4th storm. I think reed might recall which one i'm talking about.
Reed i have some pictures of that storm that hit edmonton, shelf cloud pics. Also video but i can't get it right now...If you would liek too i can send them to you :)I was chasing it on my bike(LOL) when the clouds were the same colour as the sky..Then they got darker...
Ok mike sent you the pics.
Great pics Dale !
wow nice pics Elaine!
There are a few shots of the storm near Red Deer at the link above.
Was certainly hoping for a better show!
the center of the lp supercell passed between millet and wetaskiwin. both towns were hit hard millet got heavy rain while wetaskiwin got none.
As the storm was over Wetaskiwin 10 lightning strikes hit
near Wetaskiwin in one burst killing power for hours. I have never seen
Wetaskiwin so black
Branches and debris litter highway 2A north of Wetaskiwin and even a whole tree have blocked the road
I have video of the lightning but none of the burst of the aftermanth.
I addition 100kmh winds came in
Nice pictures guys!
Incredible pics!!!! The structure w/ those storms were absolutly A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! Definently TEXTBOOK!
The sad part of the wetaskiwin supercell was the fact that it was dark out, but i did get some detail on video from the lightning.
Wetaskiwin was between the shaft and the updraft. In fact A possible tornado touchdown in wetaskiwin but F0 in strenth so no damage, the high winds lasted only 15 seconds and were localized thus a possible tornado just before the outage.
I first saw the edmonton storms fron pigeon lake.
I was hot so I went for a swim @ mulhurst.
I left at around 8:30pm
Had some storms around my region yesterday... The storms were not severe, but just under severe levels w/ 40-50 mph winds nickel size hail and they also put down a ton of rain!! My street was a river during the storms!!! And now it is 10:06 am and once again we have more shwrs and storms, but they are weak and dying out.
I still loved that storm...I filmed most of it 13 min to be exact and got some pretty good lightning :) 3 bolts at once
thx guys..great pics to everyone
Know this is off topic, but check it out!!! This video is about a haboob causing a massive car pile up! Here is the link...

Sent you the pictures reed.
That's a really nice series of pictures, and really cool that we're able to see it from so many different angles. Nice job everybody. :D
i noticed yesterday during the storm the wind was going north then instantly went south.. was wierd
The wind shifted Mike...Usually happens when gustfront passes... Say the gustfront was comming in from the north and the wind was blowing from the south. When the gustfront moves in the wind immediantly shifts to the north and thats when it gets real windy!
Makes sense cause i could see the gustfront (low fast moving clouds) kicked up a dust storm cause its been so dry here
Thanks for the pictures Kenny!
I'll be posting them on here shortly.
Incredible striations on that shelf cloud.
Hi Reed, i sent you some pix of Edm sky last night...just to the email on your media section, hope that's ok. i enjoy your site btw.
This was a nice storm haha. And thank YOU Reed for putting them up :) Me and my friend chased that storm on our bikes before it pretty much started.
Btw Reed, on the last picture i sent you, you can notice by one the last house there is a possible funnel. I didn't notice it till i reviewed the pictures.
excellent post reed, amazing pics guys. The jealousy runs deep!!!
Reed asked "Does anyone know if tornado warnings were issued for the Red Deer cell earlier this evening? I was away from the computer for a few hours..unfortunately!"
Reed, no tornado warnings yesterday at all that I was aware of.
On another note, I was at the car dealership today and someone brought in a car that was just POUNDED with hail yesterday - windshield broken with multiple hits, large pits on the roof, hood etc. Maybe they were caught in the Red Deer cell. (wonder if they got pics?!)
Reed i have some more pics too but first put those up.
The storm that hit "north of Red Deer" actually hit Blackfalds... I am in Red Deer and we didn't get anything right in the city yesterday. A coworker of mine who lives in Blackfalds says they got small hail. And no, there was no Tornado warning or watch issued, only a severe thunderstorn warning.
On another note, we JUST had a rather dark shelf cloud come over Red Deer but no precipitation... winds picked up and it was rotating... we're only in a thunderstorn watch at the moment. It is moving slightly east/south east.
Sonia, Saw that one earlier today too. Did have some rotation, it dropped rain here to the N, but nothing too bad.
Thanks for putting my pics up, Reed. (scarcasm)
