Several water spouts touched down on Lake Ponchartrain yesterday just north of New Orleans, as air mass thunderstorms moved over the lake and stretched existing vorticity.  The water spouts remained over the water, and so no damage was caused.  Here is a video of one of the water spouts taken with a cell phone camera.

That was a good one big would love to take a kyak out there but the lightning wouldn't be very agreeable.

Question: It seems that storms fire constantly on the mainland side of the sea of cortez (MEXICO) Is there any frequency of tornadoes there?

Several water spouts reported yesterday near New Orleans! Comment Posted By Heidi | July 20, 2007 @ 4:37 PM #

If you've been seeing storms in that part of Mexico lately, they're more-than-likely monsoon-related. I used to live 15 miles north of the border in Arizona, and I remember tornado reports being a rare thing - not non-existant, but rare. Microbursts, on the other hand, were pretty common this time of the year. I can only imgaine things are pretty much the same in that part of Sonora, Mexico, as it's not far from where I was in AZ.

Very impressive. I wounder what the storm looked like on radar for it to produce one that long and violent. Its hard to tell if the outer ring was water off of the lake or if it was the updraft. If water from the lake then very very impressive indeed.

I don't know what the hell is going on but the weather seems to be getting very unstable at the moment. I just woke up at around 2:30 am CST (July 21) in Swift Current Saskatchewan and wind gust are getting very strong. I looked on EC and there are watches in effect with a very large cell just south of the city, It's getting pretty crazy outside and I don't know what the hell is going on, can any one else verify conditions?
