Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta!

As seen above, storms are intensifying rapidly all around Edmonton, AB, with the best looking storm just west of Edson, AB.  This storm is showing some supercellular characteristics, and poses the highest tornado threat at this time.  This storm should track just west of Whitecourt, AB over the next few hours.  Meanwhile, storms are initiating on a boundary/dryline southeast of Edmonton as well, southwest of Wainwright...even though these storms are east of the best dynamics, they will also have a chance to become severe.  Stay tuned for updates!

Severe thunderstorm watches are now in affect for much of Southwestern - Western Saskatchewan.

Thunderstorms forming in Alberta may move into portions of western Saskatchewan this evening.
A moist unsettled airmass is producing thunderstorms in eastern Alberta. Some of these storms could become severe and may drift into western Saskatchewan later this evening or overnight.

Reed, with winds heading NorthEastern there is little to no chance of any storms drifting even close to Southwest Sask. Why is EC putting these watches in affect when their main threat of Calgary-Edmonton area is where they should be monitoring for conditions.

Several Cells are now developing south of Medicine Hat making there way Northeastern. Medicine Hat has already been subject to large rain drops lasting several moments at a time. These storms are expect to dissipate before they make there way east in Saskatchewan and North to CavenDish

insane cells develloping south of medicine hat.

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 7:30 PM #

The cough was a hack, The tower by olds fell.
Now with it all downwind of Edmonton and Calgary I suspect storms may not fire up until 7 or 8pm and may arrive in
Edmonton at sunset.
If storms move in @ night I plan on setting up at the Wetaskiwin wall mart as the lights are bright enough to see the hail, downpours etc. But if the power fails the lightning must be intense enough to illuminate everything.

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Kenny | July 19, 2007 @ 7:31 PM #

Sorry not medicine hat, south of vermillion. This could be crazy if the cell south of vermillion hits, if it does it will be most likely 10-10:30pm

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 7:32 PM #

Wainwright is in for it Look at the massive super cell moving in.
Damage reports likely for Wainwright

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike | July 19, 2007 @ 7:34 PM #

WOW look at the cell by Wainwright... can see the huge clouds from edmonton...but we are missing all the action like normal.

Very impressive supercell ESE of Grand Prairie. Keeping my eye on that one...

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By KalinWiebeSwiftCurrent | July 19, 2007 @ 7:34 PM #

Severe Weather Warnings have now be issued for Southwest Saskatchewan

Watching Radar, I personally believe that these cells will Dissipate before they get worse. Keep monitoring local weather conditions and be ready for severe weather developing in your area.

Storm south of vermillion hit 50,000 feet with golf ball sized hail, moving north west.

Why does like every canadian station favour fricken east canada...EC talks about Ontraio for like 200 hours and then alberta for like 2 min.. its like "yah theres some stuff in alberta...off to ontario now" makes me mad

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Joel | July 19, 2007 @ 7:47 PM #

Just got in to check what we had missed on for chasing. Unfortunately, the storms are about as far away from any radar as possible, so it's hard to tell what's going on. Several of them look pretty good, though. The one north of coronation appears to be a monster. Really wish Reed and I were there. Theres a couple north of Oyen that could be interesting as well. What an incredible setup for supercells in Canada. Surface winds are extremely backed (ESE) with dewpoints in the mid to upper sixties common east of the bulging front/dryline. Even if upper level winds are southerly, there should be enough turning for a few decent twisters with the amount of CAPE that is available. I hope everyone in the path of these storms is keeping a close eye to the sky.

radar echoes coming over the mountains near Calgary
this might trigger storms north of Calgary
Also I have work at 5:00am tomorrow morning so I prefer the storms hit Wetaskiwin before midnight.
The last big storm hit at 2AM BOOOOOH
I slept of the job the next day(shh my boss doesn't know)

Joel

Are any of those developing cells south of Medicine Hat anything to worry about? Radar continues to show them developing then dissipating consecutively. Not sure really what they are doing?

Strange thing on carvel radar near drayton valley. I have seen these before. they seem to indicate storm formation

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Kelly | July 19, 2007 @ 8:08 PM #

Your right Mike, I can see it from my deck near Carvel, large tower!

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 8:20 PM #

Cameron:
Be patient.
Remember the great storm of august 22 2006. The storm formed after EC dropped the warnings.
This is what I see. Look toward Airdrie and olds as some tower trying to go. something over banff is less than an hour from colliding with the hot air. we'll see

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 8:41 PM #

Watch ended south of Edmonton

This is a sigh that the oppressive heatwave is fighting back and may not move east like in the forecast
my interpretation is as follows for Edmonton.
Friday. hot and humid
Sat. hot and humid
Sun. hot and humid
It may even Take a WINTER STORM to stop the bloody heat.
But sadly such dose not happen till October

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike | July 19, 2007 @ 8:44 PM #

Well thats sucks Mike R. maybe we will get s storm then...since edmonton has a Super Forcefield around it!

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Joel L | July 19, 2007 @ 8:44 PM #

(The other Joel) It's just starting to rain steadily with some lightning. Other than that, I'm still waiting for it to hopefully come through. EC radar has it bypassing Wainwright to the west (as of right now)

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Dale | July 19, 2007 @ 8:44 PM #

i was south west east and north....wetaskawin athabasca an hour west of edmonton, and vegerville, viking...looked everywhere...most of the storms arnt even anviling... the towers go to a certain hieght then stop and whisp out.

Were there any reported tornadoes?

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 8:57 PM #

due to the formation of a new high pressure in southern Alberta I am giving this advisory.

Alberta will have the hottest July on record averaging 8 degrees C above normal.
This morning as an example of the heat and humidity generating severe storms even in the early morning.
If storms can't form at all then it is high pressure.

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Aaron | July 19, 2007 @ 8:57 PM #

Does anyone know if theres a likelyhood of storms in north edmonton tonight? I want to at least see something go down.

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Joel L | July 19, 2007 @ 8:59 PM #

From what was said on the news, there's a possibility of another line of storms moving off of the mountains/foothills and head towards the Edmonton region later tonight

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Dale | July 19, 2007 @ 8:59 PM #

not likely arron.

jy...none so far .

mike and mike r, yes and you bet your arse.

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 9:01 PM #

If it wasn't for the humidity we would have forest fires that make California look like a small fire pit compared to the apocalyptic fires here.
So I thank the muggy weather for keeping out beautiful Alberta forests from burning to a crisp

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 9:03 PM #

If the QE2 gets severe storms it will be the greatest screw up in the history of weather forecasting!!! If it already is't

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Kelly | July 19, 2007 @ 9:08 PM #

My prediction? I bet we are all woke up to something huge tonight, weather predictions can't be THIS far off can they?

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 9:22 PM #

Kelly
If big storm hits they will not give much relief. The airmass is too moist to go silent.
And the air aloft is still very warm
I now agree with the new global forecast of continued heat.

The ridge will not leave but it will spread east and heat will bake most of the country

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 9:26 PM #

AND THE WORLD WILL KNOW OF THE TROPICAL ALBERTA.
as muggy weather will hit the grand prix of Edmonton hard

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Mike R | July 19, 2007 @ 9:34 PM #

Air mass storms possible tomorrow but slow movers like the last 3 hundred. It is similar to the doldrums in the tropic. ridge will bring the low into the NWT. Good storm chasing on the tundra, LOL tornado chasing with polar bears....LOL

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Casey | July 19, 2007 @ 10:01 PM #

Is there something popping up on radar between red deer and wetaskiwin?

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Reed | July 19, 2007 @ 10:19 PM #

I bet there were at least a few tornadoes that touched down with those supercells in southeast AB, and maybe with the supercells that developed W and NW of Edmonton. We'll never know because there are not enough storm chasers in Canada!

I just got back to the computer, and watched the radar loop...that supercell near Coronation looked INCREDIBLE for awhile. Does anyone know if any tornado warnings were issued?

The next possible event looks like central SK into the lake region of manitoba on Saturday...I'm just now checking the new model output.

Dale...did you head after those cells to your east today? Probably would have been tough to catch!

Storms intensifying rapidly in Alberta! Comment Posted By Rob | July 19, 2007 @ 10:23 PM #
