A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued by Environment Canada for the areas outlined in yellow below. I'm very surprised this isn't a tornado watch, since the instability and shear are more than adequate for tornadoes once storms develop in a few hours. It will likely be upgraded later this afternoon and evening. As soon as storms begin showing up on radar, I'll post another blog entry. STAY TUNED!!

Severe thunderstorm watch for
Drayton Valley - Devon - Rimbey - Pigeon Lake continued
Thunderstorm watch in effect.
This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.
Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements. If threatening weather approaches take immediate safety precautions.
A developing north south frontal zone from just west of Edmonton south to west of Red Deer has begun to pool moist unstable air. It is expected that thunderstorms could begin to trigger near this boundary after 3 PM and well into the evening hours. Storms which develop are expected to move northeastwards. It is possible this watch may be extended southeastwards towards Medicine Hat as the day progresses.

live in sw calgary & remember this storm. there was high winds & golf ball size hail falling from the sky. always been fascinated by severe weather & have been following hurricane Dean. I have never seen a tornado from the naked eye, just on video. It saddens me to see loss of life but wish I had the financial means to see these tremendoes storms.
about to go out here and start my pursuit...wouldnt ya know it... my cam corder crapped out on me**&%$#*@!!! carose sounds like the start to me too mike.
Stills can be good too.....
Hi , just found your blog , we are approaching our 1987 tornado aniveristy this month , how can we find out if the conditions are the same ?
Hey Reed what you think about my first funnel catch..it's like I dont have to do much these days to get something on video just wake up walk to my roof and whoops there it is.lol btw will be chasing tomorrow.
I heard a report of a tornado warning in Connecticut today. Nothing else on it, but it looks like we are going to see some Stormy weather this afternoon in New York. Yippie.
Man i wish i lived in Alberta just for today!!!!!!
jaco:
They are close but not exact
I would be more concered for massive hail, floods and Incredible lightning. Also look out for very strong winds
Thanks , I am working a night shift tonight so I am taking my camera to work , see how things turn out .
does anyone know if tornadoes are a threat to Red Deer-Ponoka-Innisfail-Stettler region in alberta today.. my specific question to anyone that knows this answer is if there are going to be weak or strong tornadoes in just the Ponoka region?
Someone on the other thread said that the dewpoint was 22 degrees C in Alberta right now ... this translates to 72 degrees fahrenheit. Just thought I'd toss this out there for the Americans to ponder before things start exploding in Alberta. If you want a C/F conversion tool, click on my name.
As far as I'm concerned there might not be anything developing in alberta... Looks like the cape might be to strong, but hey you never know!
BRB: Yes. Tornados are a *threat*. If you take a look at the maps that Reed has been posting in other threads, and read what he has to say about the current situation in this thread, that should pretty much give you all the info you need to know as to whether tornados are a threat in those areas.
No one knows whether any tornados are going to happen *for sure*, and so therefore no one knows how strong any potential tornados will be. ... However, the *conditions* seem right for some strong tonados. But again, no one knows where *exactly* or specifically they *might* hit, if any form at all.
Basically: The conditions are there. But no one can predict where things *might* happen. Just keep monitoring this site as the evening wears on, and I'm sure if things begin to happen near you, everyone will be talking about it. :)
Sorry for all the usages of *__* ...I can't use italics, so that's what I did instead. :)
BRB...im pretty confident in telling you that there is no way anyone can tell you if there will be a tornado, and let alone how strong it will be in the ponoka area. tornadoes and weather in general is very unpredictable. sure, weather models and give us general ideas, but to pin point exactly where a tornado will touch down and the intensity it will have is pretty much impossible. just keep your eyes and ears open for warnings here in the next few hours!
Well said Heidi and Brandon...Once the storms initiate, we'll have a better on the exact locations for severe wx.
What if NOTHING happens??? I know I keep saying this and I am pretty sure your getting tired of it too...but the cape may be too strong and I am starting to see indications of it too. Storms are trying to form but for one so far they quickly weaken(which means that the cape might be surpressing development) and for two most of them have been forming north of Edmonton... I don't know for sure so keep me posted.
Zack, nothing will happen im guessing, its edmonton very rare we get big storms
You can see the disturbance on satellite moving across the BC Rockies at this time...this should be what initiates the storms along the Foothills. It looks like the morning MCS has stabilized the lower atmosphere for the time being, but this has allowed for major heating during the day today. I'd expect initiation over the next few hours.
Excuse me where did my post go? That wasn't very friendly at all. This was good information. Shows that someone else is seeing a non event in the areas You and EC are showing.
Zack you keep posting and asking if the "cape" is to strong...and i know you keep saying you dont know that much, and all but it shows how much you really know.
A strong "CAPE" will HELP the storms form, while a strong "CAP" will KILL the chances of storms from forming.
CAPE which you have been refering to stands for "Convective Available Potential Energey" Therefore, high CAPE readings are good.
When a CAP is spoken of they are speaking of CIN which stands for Convective Inhibition.
Not trying to be a ass, but it seems like one min you are talking like you know alot, and your sure, and the next minute you dont.
You know it is possible for nothing to happen at first and EC drops the warning , then things go nuts and surprise everyone.
August 22 2006 is a good example
I ment to say CAP Ben..... And I know what CAPE means so quit trying to say Im stupid!!
