Supercells initiating shortly in western Alberta!

Supercells will soon be initiating along the Alberta Foothills over the next few hours, and will move northeast across the adjacent Plains.  The wind shear is more favorable for tornadic supercells today than the previous few days, and instability is just as high.  The best chances for severe weather will be around Calgary north to Edmonton and surrounding areas.  Environment Canada has just issued a severe thunderstorm watch for this area (see below), but I would not be surprised if parts of the watch area will be upgraded to a tornado watch later this afternoon/evening.  Stay tuned for updates!

And not to ignore Ontario from what I can see on the EC radar that storm looks good too.

Chatham-Kent - Rondeau Park
6:05 PM EDT Wednesday 18 July 2007
Tornado warning for
Chatham-Kent - Rondeau Park continued

At 5:30 P.M. an Environment Canada Canwarn weather spotter has noticed that a severe thunderstorm is still showing signs of rotation near Wallaceburg and Walpole Island as it interacts with the lake breeze from Lake Erie. Generally if a tornado does form from these types of severe thunderstorms it will most likely be brief and weak.

These severe thunderstorms will also bring potentially damaging wind gusts to 90 km/h or greater and large hail near 2 centimeters or larger in diameter.

This is a warning that severe thunderstorms with tornadoes are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions. Take immediate safety precautions.

Haha, thanks man. If you really want to add salt to the wound, I saw it at around 4:45 while driving and thought to myself "wow, that looks like it's REALLY going up, maybe I should hit the road and call Reed", then decided I was probably just getting overly excited.

Not to draw attention away to the in-state action, but I think things are really going to get popping in Iowa now.

Mike...the light blue around the radars is called "ground clutter"...it's usually dust/aerosols suspended near the ground or even insects/birds. It's usually close to the radar because the radar beam gets further and further away from the ground with distance from the radar.

Supercells initiating shortly in western Alberta! Comment Posted By Reed | July 18, 2007 @ 9:34 PM #

Hey BRB...there is no way to know for certain, even if the models are forecasting the outbreak of the century. I've seen situations where all the ingredients are in place, and for so apparent reason, not a single storm develops.

The recent models are actually not looking quite as favorable further south for tornadoes tomorrow. It seems there could be a subtle lead wave that will eject, and the subsidence behind this wave could suppress storm development....If storms develop, though..the shear is definitely in place for tornadoes.

The best area tomorrow looks to be further north near Edmonton west to the foothills. If a storm develops further south near Red Deer/ponoka area, it will rapidly become supercellular..but the more widespread storms should be further north.

Stay tuned for updates...I'll add a detailed post later tonight.

Hi everyone
I know nothing about storms whatsoever except for the fact that I am terrified of them ...lol.
I am in okotoks and am concerned about all of this talk for tommorow. Now I have been know to have the wool pulled over my eyes but someone once told me that it is highly unlikely okotoks would have a tornado due to some reason or other.
How concerned do i need to be for tommorow? I stay at home with my small kids all day so a heads up would be great.
I realize that people like me who are terrified of storms must be pretty annoying to the ones who love and chase them. Just wondering that's all.
Thanks.

um brenna... okatoks can have one.. but just stay tuned here for tommorows developments... looks like most of the action should be up around edmonton way anyhow.

Brenna,

My first advice would be to not worry too too much about storms; there's so many other things that are a lot more dangerous to you over the course of your life time (like, say, driving).

Looking at long term averages (and I'm talking about reports from the last few years to the last few decades), there do appear to be areas that are more prone to tornadoes. The three most distinct areas in Alberta seem to be centered over/ around 1) Edmonton-Camrose, 2) Provost and 3) areas S of Taber and Lethbridge. Frequencies seem to be slightly less in areas between these regions (including Calgary and Okotoks). Now, that said, long term averages won't tell you anything about what's going to happen tomorrow...

As for Thursday, just keep the radio on and keep an ear out for thunder. Most likely, you wont get anything severe, let along a big tornado. As Reed mentioned above, looks like the northern part of the population belt is going to get the worst...

You will be fine just keep yer cool and eyes on the sky and local weather. best I can say not a expert just love chasin em was supposed to be there but wife but a halt to my plans LOL. Here it is

Yeah, should have been more specific... there's no reason Okotoks won't have one ever, and there's probably been a few already in the past, but again, nothing you should be loosing any sleep over.

take care,

Simon E.

Thank you for replying Dale and Simon. Seems silly to me to still be afraid of storms , just one of those things I guess. I sometimes wonder if perhaps I were more educated on weather that maybe it would help my fear??Who knows. I guess I just would not even know where to start.
Anyways, I'm babbaling again.
Thanks for the replies

Hey Rob...just got your message...my phone has been out of commission today.

Did you decide to head west to chase tomorrow??

Brenna...There is a fine line between fear and curiosity...I remember being deathly afraid of lightning and thunder when I was younger.. And now it's become an obsession! I bet a similar pattern occurs with lots of weather enthusiasts.

There is no reason to be afraid about tomorrow...You have a better chance of winning the lottery than your town getting hit by a tornado...but you should still stay tuned to local media, and TornadoVideos.net of course for updates.

Most of the storms will be further north.

Based on the new models Saturday could be very interesting from Saskatoon to the lake country of manitoba. This one would be a lot closer to you rob!

Still a long ways out though.

Reed I was the same way when I was younger everytime there was a thunderstorm i would be so scared and usually go to my room and hide under the covers. At night was worse because of the light show. But now i love it. Everytime there is a storm im looking outside and sometimes stand of my front porch to watch them. But as soon as i get a car i plan to start chasing storms. But i still have a tone to learn about this stuff.

I have to say that I don't see any towers in the Edmonton area. Where is Mike?

Hi Guys and Gals,
From Mannville here...Vermilion area. Just had a weird one go through. Anyhow, the thunder wouldn't quit rolling...green sky for a bit and strange clouds. On last Tuesday night, I got to see a "monster". It was hanging down just about tree top level. Then it just whizzed southeast, and remanifested again as a long, slanted cigar just over the highway... then sucked up again. I have never seen one that big around here,....ever. Just thought you would like to know. Called it in, and the officer phoned me the next day and told me that I was a very lucky person to have seen what I did.
