Twin Lakes, OK radar image from 11:08 am CDT

Major flooding has occurred with intense, slow-moving thunderstorms over portions of North Texas and southern Oklahoma last night.  Rainfall rates of over 3 inches per hour have been reported with these storms!  Sadly, two fatalities were reported with flash flooding in a mobile home park in Haltom City, TX last night, which is a suburb of Fort Worth.  Here is a zoomed-in map showing the flood watches and warnings over N TX and southeast OK, as well as the expiring tornado watch for the region (no tornadic activity was reported, however).  The large green dots show the counties with the tornado warnings.  This rain was initiated by the departing upper-low.

From no rain in years to underwater in a few months. Hope some of that moisture moves into Ohio and Alabama as things are very dry here and the crops need some moisture. Looks like that cold front will kick that Low east.

This heavy rain event is *supposed* to be coming here to the Ozarks later on this evening. A personalized forecast I get has us slated to get over 5" in about 4 hrs, so things could definitely get very interesting here. Reed & Joel - Imagine what all of our "low water bridges" (or in other words, those slabs of concrete that go across the road where there's a stream or creek) look like with that much gushing over-top of them!!! If it happens, I'll send you photos so you can see what we put up with! Very dangerous! =-O

TX Chase well Reed, Erik here. We Started Chasing at about 1:30 am this morning in North Texas. The storms intesified greatly as they aproached Denton County. We were heading out to report flooding and to get lightning shots. I checked the radar just before we left and the NWS issued the first tornado warning. IT WAS ON! There was lower level shear within the storm, but not much. But this same system produced in Central texas. We set up about 6 miles east of Denton. The storm came in just the way we wanted it to. We saw large scud raise and attach itself to the cloud base. It was a wall cloud for about 5 minutes. Saw alot more vertical movement then expected. Everything disorganized fairly quickly. It wasn't very organized in the first place. So we decided to head North to Pilot point area for the next storm. It was reported to have 80 mph straight line winds. We stayed there for awhile until about 4:00 am. Then another tornado warning was issued just due west of us.. Then I get a call from my girlfriend with her freaking out telling me the radar was showing a TVS over Valley View. she said it was devoloping a nice hook So we headed up to Collinsville TX to intercept the storm. we waited there for awile and then got a report of the storm moving more east now heading right to Pilot Point. There was a report of tornado on the ground near Valley View ( still unconfirmed). If it was day time I would have headed that way in a heart beat. But this thing was taking on a HP supercell character and it's dark. So we waited for a minute to decide what to do. (I am not a very ballsy night chaser) So the storm was closing in on pilot point we started heading south that way. It was raining so hard. I don't think I have ever seen it rain that hard. We had steady 40-50 mph wind. Lots CG lots of them struck within 50 yards from our position. We made it to Pilot Point. Yeah we core punched it. We were about a mile north of Pilot Point looking NNE and to my surprise this cloud base was very rain free. I thought it would have been way more rain wrapped. Had a fairly organized rotating wall. Cloud base was very turbulent. I reported the wall cloud to NWS. We had a nice clear slot devolope, inflow winds were strong. we thought it was going to happen. this all lasted 30 minutes. A volenteer FireFighter reported a tornado on the ground. We never saw anything. Then right before were about to follow the storm to grayson county. 2 storm spotters and a chaser for Channel 8 news( yeah we got there before anybody did) spoke to him and he told me the tornado touchdown was disregarded. We followed the storm up to about 7:00 am saw a couple more cruddy wall clouds. weak rotation. Made some flooding reports. Went home then my parents call me at 8 this morning to tell me there house is flooded. So guess what I have been doing. Well guys sorry to write to a novel. But these storms just didn't get as much news coverage as they should have. There is alot of rumors about them. People have already lost there lives to these storms. Thanks for taking half your day to read this.

Thanks for the report Erik!!!

I needed a detailed chase account like that because I couldn't have been there!!

I'm out scoping sturdy structures on Dauphin Island, AL for a potential hurricane intercept!

It is a very sad day in N TX...floods are the leading cause of natural disaster-related fatalities in the U.S...they should not be taken lightly.

Anthony: Thanks!

We'll be out there as long as the conditions look good for tornadoes!

It looks like the Canadian/Northern Plains season could get going in a week or so.

Soon though, we'll be shifting our focus to hurricane season!

Not a problem Reed. It was a great chase. I talked to several people today from the Denton, Cooke county area and most of them never even knew there was a Tornado warning. When I reported the wall cloud over Pilot Point they had extended the warning for another 30 minutes. The town also then sounded the alarms. I don't know why they didn't have them sounded on the initial warning. I did get a few pictures of the storm but i am having problems with my camera. I am hoping to get a new one soon. As faw as flooding goes we saw people do some stupid stuff. We saw a guy drive down a street where a creek had flooded over the road. Water came up to the rocker panels on his GMC 4x4 and it was moving fast. I am shocked he made it through there. Shortly there after the police blocked the road. People just think nothing can happen to them when they are in there vehicle.

Also, if anyone has pictures of the flooding and would allow me to post them on the blog please let me know!

Thanks!!

Kevin: Great shot!

Dust devils are INCREDIBLE...we were golfing a few years back in OK and chased a long-lived dust devil with our golf cart. We drove through it several times...the wind was pretty intense
