Tornado watch issued in central MT!

Persistent ESE flow over the high plains of SD and MT has resulted in substantial moisture advection and destabilization over central MT just east of the Rocky Mountains.  Consequently, 0-1 km EHI values have increased to 3+ over this area (see 19 UTC RUC analysis below), and storms have begun to initiate over the higher terrian of western MT.

Consequently, the SPC has issued a tornado watch over this area, since the storms over the higher terrain will likely become supercellular as the move east into the more unstable and sheared environment of central MT.  A large, persistent supercell has been occurring over the last few hours in extreme northern MT near the Canadian Border.  A few severe straight-line wind reports have occurred along the path of this storm!

The storms west of Great Falls are beginning to exhibit supercellular characteristics. These could go insane here over the next few hours.

Can't believe you aren't there Reed, looks like a great summer chase event. Look out grizzly bears

The Glasgow VAD is starting to look favorable for a hose...the first gate is at 30 knots out of the ESE. AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I should definitely be there...if I could get a flight to Glasglow I'd be on it.

Gate to gate is 110 knts now on the first tilt. I'd give up my first born to be on that storm out in that country side!!

Adding a 30 kt 500 m wind to the NAM forecast hodograph for Glasgow looks very favorable for a due easterly storm motion. The hodo also has the veering with height at very high levels. In an earlier discussion with Joel, we were talking about how this might play a role with precip evacuation from the updraft. Many of the major tornado days have this.

Out of control!

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By matt | June 16, 2007 @ 6:39 PM #

it looks like some storms have very low tops or that the tops are in the wrong place, they could go outflow dom. Some look good, but we will will see

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By matt | June 16, 2007 @ 6:48 PM #

also, I like the looks of the outflow boundary moving NW from KUDX to the corner of SD, MT, WY. It could meet with that storm coming out of the radar hole and enhance convergence and shear. We will see

Damn...I love that area of the country, I'd absolutely love to get the chance to see some action roll through there along with NW Wyoming.

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By matt | June 16, 2007 @ 8:41 PM #

Well, it looks like that boundary enhanced the convergence (a bit to much). It is still pushing she SW part of the line NWD this could cause a breif spin-up in the middle sector of the line. We will see

Where is everybody?? MONSTER supercell rolling through montana....and other supercells starting to fire southeast of there...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By matt | June 16, 2007 @ 9:31 PM #

Just as I predicted, a tornado was spotted in the middle of the line! AT 806 PM MDT...TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS REPORTED A TORNADO. THIS
TORNADO WAS LOCATED NEAR WHITEWOOD, SD...OR ABOUT 7 MILES NORTHEAST OF
DEADWOOD, SD...MOVING EAST AT 25 MPH.

it looks like the storm up near Glasgow, MT was able to ditch its gust front and reorganize its structure. It is hard to tell from radar (becasue of range folding), but it looks like it could produce a tornado. Its is showing weak rotation now on tilt one and has a great amount of rotational support alfot. Also, unlike a few hours ago, its tops are now reaching 50K ft and is in the right location. We will see

Reed I got an important question fur you. When you chase, does all the different radars in the car are a program on the laptop or are they some special computer? Please Reed or someone else answer me.

How it goes this weekend Reed/Joel?

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By Anthony | June 17, 2007 @ 10:50 AM #

what software do you guys used to track the storm reed or anyone on this page/............................

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By Ben | June 17, 2007 @ 12:43 PM #

The radars they use are mostlikely on a laptop, using a program. The program is most likely Gr3 or Gr2AE edition...they are online and you can download trial verions....3 weeks i think...Thanks to someone...and also Mike Gibsons ignorance i have the full version.

Tornado watch issued in central MT! Comment Posted By Reed | June 17, 2007 @ 3:27 PM #

We use GRlevel3 and a cingular data card for mobile internet access. We display our GPS location on GRlevel3..and also run Delormme GPS mapping software at the same time.

My roomate has Threatnet...you can't see the details on the radar images, but the coverage is unlimited and you can get a general idea on what the best storm is based on shape, dbz, etc...you can even see large hooks on threatnet.

We just run everything on a standard laptop. We plan on implementing some MAJOR features next year, including high-qualtiy streaming video, and much more, so we'll probably have to have a desktop computer in theback of our truck.
