Reed and I are expecting the possibility for significant tornadoes in the northeast Texas panhandle later this afternoon and evening.  Highest threat appears to be east of Amarillo to Guymon, OK and north of I-40.  CAPES are expected to be around 3000 j/kg  with excellent speed and directional sheer with the wind fields by this evening.  850 mb winds will be around 40 knts by 8 to 9 pm CDT across much of the area.  At 2:30 pm we are heading west out of OKC heading towards an initial target of Pampa, TX.  Stay tuned for further details. - Joel

Reed are you on your way to the panhandle of ok? I
have a feeling that you might get some grate tornados there.

Strong tornadoes likely in the Texas panhandle Comment Posted By Heidi | May 23, 2007 @ 3:11 PM #

Go get us a monster in an unpopulated area. It's setting up in a good spot for that...

jp: where are you getting this extended severe outlook info? I'd like to take a look if you have a link??? This sounds a lot more adamant than what the Storm Prediction Center is putting out at this point, although they do have that area highlighted. I've got family in that area too, so that's why I'm especially interested...

Read my maps Reed. They should help you.
Updated for the 1AM CDT Map on my site. Good luck guys!

Synopsis : Cap will be much weaker today, so storms should fire earlier than the other day. My focus area is the Oklahoma, and Texas Panhandles today. I have the maps below ready. They show if a storm develops, what kind of environment for tornado dynamics it will be in. I tried to revise it a bit to display areas where the cap is present to not fire up storms, so we will see how it goes. As far as tonight. Well, last night the storms died down, however tonight, I am going to say a line of them will develop in Western Oklahoma, into Kansas, possible the Eastern TX Panhandle, and Push East across Oklahoma throughout the night. Those maps will be developed over the afternoon today to look for those. I cannot possibly develop them right now, but all I can say is dynamics look very possible for a tornado outbreak overnight. We will see, but for now, the maps below will be valid for the times they say.

UPDATE: Cap will weaken across much of Central TX, however the cap should hold off overnight for much of the TX Panhandle, and it looks like Violent tornado dynamics will be there. We wil lsee how this plays out. New Map for 1AM CDT updated at the very bottom.

JP: I live in Ohio (Cleveland area) and there is no info anywhere about this possible tornado outbreak.

Saturday/Sunday is calling for a chance of thunderstorms, but nothing on the scale of what you are saying.

I have viewed all sites that are at the publics disposal and there is nothing anywhere that says this info is correct.

Can one of the "experts" chime in on what they have predicted for Saturday/Sunday for the Ohio area? Especially northern Ohio and western PA...

I have viewed that as well as every site and map in the Cleveland area and all of Ohio. There is nothing indicating the possibility of some "huge tornadic outbreak" that you are indicating.

There is a chance of thunderstorms with the slight risk of some becoming severe.

I see that you are "hoping" for the outbreak, but from the way you have been posting, it appears that you had some factual evidence to back this up.

If anything severe happens in IN/OH it will be saturday evening. and late satruday night or sunday for PA The wind speeds appear decent for storm formation, but not so good for tornadoes, since the directional aspect doesnt look to be turning. either way the moisture will be in place and the short wave trough will move through, generating at least the winds/hail as forecasted

Our internet is having some MAJOR problems...I think we need a new cingular data card.

Sorry for the lack of updates...but we had no internet the whole time and even the cell coverage is bad up there.

When we get back to some high speed internet I'll upload the video...the tornado was small and brief, but the wall cloud was INTENSE! The only way we could get into position was on a dirt ranch road...the wall cloud seems to rotate all the way around us...one of the weirdest things I have ever seen!

We'll have our internet situation fixed before the next series of events.

Strong tornadoes likely in the Texas panhandle Comment Posted By Debo | May 24, 2007 @ 12:55 AM #

That's good to hear you got something Reed. Kinda sucks that the tornado went over the most rural part of the panhandle with the worst road network around. Can't wait to see the footage tho. Keep it up!

Stayed with a couple storms a little to long. Saw a 2 mile area along a highway west of Stinnett, TX that had tennis ball size hail everywhere. I took a lot of pics there because it was sadly one of the funniest parts of the day. Got in kinda bad situation near Spearman. Road turned to very bad mud and I could barely stay on the road. Did I mention I was under a wall cloud? South of Spearman after dark was the most electric storm I have ever seen. I did like the lack of chaser convergence till late very late in the evening and even then it wasn't bad. The surface winds were incredible after dark, too bad we didnt have them all day. Most of the storms I was on yesterday had little or no inflow at all. Lucky for me it was only one tank of gas yesterday.

Agreed. The tornado chat has been completely silent all afternoon.
