A supercell developed just north of the DFW Metroplex and discretely propagated SSW along the nearly stationary cold front through Arlington, TX this evening.  A tornado warning was issued at 8:23 pm CDT, for a rapidly rotating wall cloud/funnel, and 1-3 inch hail was produced in the city!  Fortunately, it appears from the storm reports that the tornado did not touch down.  Shown below is a radar image at the time of the tornado:
Gene Yates was in Arlington at the time of the storm...We are awaiting his report regarding any hail or tornado damage that occurred in the DFW Metroplex tonight.

Guys, I live in Duncanville, TX, (Dallas County), Right of Tarrant. The lightning was UNBELIEVABLE. Most amazing show in years. I can say that if the lighting said anything about it, this thing was a monster. Storms redeveloping south of Tarrant County. Ellis country starting to look interesting. Also, My grandparents were "In The Bear Cage" In a matter of speaking as they live in Arlington. 1 mile NE of the parks mall. Im glad it didnt turn SE, Would of ment be having to get hit by it.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Reed | April 3, 2007 @ 9:24 PM #

WOW! It's a good thing it didn't produce a damaging tornado...at least that's what I can tell from the reports so far. It sounds like it was "developing" but not in-progress..we'll see...glad your grandparents are fine.

Do you know of any one that got pictures of the massive hail?? If so...I'm working on a research project on hail damage to commercial structures..and would greatly appreciate any photos of the baseball size hail.

Thanks!!

Umm Reed, I dont know anyone personally, But I know there were alot of photos taken today.

On another note, It appers the storm in Ellis County is starting to hook rather nicely. This storm is producing alot more lightning then the last one. I can still see it looking to the south.

hey, you think these cells will hold together tornadically as the night progresses? i'm in Huntsville, wanting a good show...don't know much about the conditions, but it's very humid and rather warm still......??

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Reed | April 3, 2007 @ 11:45 PM #

It looks like the tornado threat is definitely over...just strong straightline winds and small hail. It's an intense squall line though.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Tyler Franklin | April 4, 2007 @ 1:19 AM #

that's just our luck down here in our precise location in Huntsville surrounded by the national forest...happens EVERY time; shit just goes right around us in all directions, like some kind of force field, some sort of anomoly about this spot... we did intersect an f0-1 in Point Blank, Tx in 2001, though, got a good picture of it...no video, sadly... stayed on the ground for about 40 minutes, tho... if you want i can send you the pic. anyway, good work, and hope to be an extension of such with my digital camera in this region.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Reed | April 4, 2007 @ 1:29 AM #

Hey Tyler,

That would be great...We never make it further east than Mississippi.

I'm definitely interested in seeing the pictures. What date was that tornado??

Thanks,
Reed

Great pictures from yesterday! Thunderstorm season is already on its way to North Idaho (despite the fact we had a small snow storm blow in Monday. that snow has melted already). I'll be keeping my camera handy whenever we get a good storm coming in. I'll take pix and send them to you guys. :)

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By erin | April 4, 2007 @ 11:22 AM #

There are some pix of quarter-sized hail (from the Dallas/Midlothian storm) here: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/pix/weather/

I wonder if there's a local Arlington paper or tv station with reader/viewer pix of the bigger stuff...

NWS Report

The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday that a small tornado with a very small footprint touched down in Dalworthington Gardens Tuesday night.

The twister, classified as an F1 tornado, was estimated to have packed winds in the 85 to 90 mph range.

Vehicles were damaged by hail as large as baseballs and roofs were torn apart by high winds but no injuries were reported in the storm system that generated specacular lightning and heavy rain.

Radar and storm spotters detected cloud rotation that might have signaled a tornado, and early eyewitness reports indicated that a funnel cloud touched down in northern Arlington.

Irish Hancock, Arlington's emergency management coordinator, said a wall cloud also had formed near Lake Arlington but quickly collapsed.

A tornado warning was issued for Tarrant County at 8:30 p.m. and canceled about 30 minutes later.

In Dalworthington Gardens, at least four homes damaged by tornadic winds were deemed uninhabitable by officials. The F1 twister is at the lower limit of the standard Fujita scale that meteorologists use to measure the fury of tornadoes.

About 2 inches of rain was reported in parts of Arlington, and similar rainfall was reported in other parts of southern Tarrant County and across northern Johnson County.

There were isolated pockets of severe weather, including hail and hard rain, in Collin and Dallas counties. Intense lightning was reported across the metropolitan area.

Before the tornado warnings sent people scurrying for shelter, weather watchers were focused on an intense thunderstorm that threatened to flood already-saturated ground. Despite the torrential rain that fell in less than an hour, no significant flooding was reported.

Although the storm did not inflict widespread damage, high winds downed trees and caused electrical disruptions.

Northwest Arlington resident Stephen Morgan knew there was a chance the storm could bring damage when he heard the hail. Putting a bucket on his head for protection, he ventured from his home in the 2000 block of Wesley Drive to assess the situation.

"I could see the black funnel cloud and blue all around it," Morgan said. "Lightning lit up the sky. Trees started going crazy. There were baseballs falling out of the sky."

He marveled as the sky suddenly turned from green to dark.

A funnel cloud 300 to 400 yards from his house was moving toward him.

"It looked like the funnel cloud touched the ground," he said. "It kept getting bigger and bigger – you could see the debris."

Mr. Morgan ran inside and told his wife to gather their four children, ages 1 to 7, and go into the bathroom. The family stayed in the bathroom for about 10 minutes until the tornado sirens stopped.

Afterward, Morgan went outside and discovered his vehicle had been badly damaged by hail. Tree branches littered the area.

"My biggest fear was that it was going to land right here because everything was shaking," he said. "I feel pretty lucky because there's no telling with tornadoes."

Calmer weather was expected today and Thursday, with partly sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid-60s. But showers and thunderstorms were expected to return Friday and Saturday.

So I was just checking the radar for my area (Spokane, WA radar) and it showed a TVS during the animation and above the little purple TVS symbol on the radar it said NO STOMS. What the heck does that mean? LOL

We're having that same issue here in North Idaho. We had a snow storm that blew through here Monday, and stayed onthe ground until yesterday. Today it's suppose to get up to the sixties and up into the Seventies this weekend. WTF??? lol

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Reed | April 5, 2007 @ 11:21 AM #

Last nights model runs were actually forecasting 1.5 inches of frozen precip for Dallas! I doubt that will verify...INSANE weather!

GLOBAL WARMING!

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Shawna | April 5, 2007 @ 11:35 AM #

Well, we can all rest easy about the Global Warming turning into "The Day After Tomorrow"...we all know that most of the disasters on that movie are scientifically impossible. Good to know I won't be frozen in 15 feet of snow in Idaho..HAHA!

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Gene Yates | April 5, 2007 @ 11:54 AM #

lol i know right and this all is going to end when??? crazy weather but the bad part is just starting 26% of the tornadoes in the dfw area hits in April... but yet its cold outside again hmmm lol...

Gotta love the freakin weather of 2007.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Ryan | April 5, 2007 @ 3:12 PM #

Reed. Here in Omaha, we are having snow. It is so ridiculous. I guess that we are having a break in the tornado action before it gets going again, Hopefully. I looked at the storm reports from the NWS. Hail reports were unbelievable. I also saw some tornado reports in Arkansas as well. Stay Warm :)

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By sammy | April 5, 2007 @ 4:24 PM #

i went outside and videotaped the hail. and i ate some.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By sammy | April 5, 2007 @ 4:29 PM #

the news said there were two tornado warnings. the hail where i was was only 1 inch but in arlington it was baseball size.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Reed | April 5, 2007 @ 6:45 PM #

Hey Sammy do you have any pictures of the hail?

The long-range models are hinting at a western trough developing by ~April 13...so we could be looking at some more tornado events mid-late April.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Gene Yates | April 5, 2007 @ 10:28 PM #

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Dent | April 6, 2007 @ 12:44 PM #

Yeah...global warming...lol..no offense but I'm glad the snow has stayed to the west and south of Iowa. Been cold/windy since that massive front came thru earlier this week. Local weather said last night that pain-in-the-ass low ne of here in Canada is gonna do a very rare thing...move backwards and so is the weather system around it? I remember once seeing snow here in Iowa between as late as April-June...think somewhere from late 80s to 90? Not sure. I WANT SUMMER DAMMIT!!! LOL

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By D Holder | April 6, 2007 @ 1:40 PM #

GFS model beginning to hint at severe weather outbreak on the southern Plains late next week. Details will obviously become more defined with subsequent model runs, however paramaters look good at this point in time.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Reed | April 6, 2007 @ 2:21 PM #

I was storm chasing up in Iowa about 10 days ago and we saw snow drifts still remaining on the east facing hills. Some were over a foot deep!

I'll be posting something about next week soon...it could be huge if we can get the deep moisture up here.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By D Holder | April 6, 2007 @ 2:25 PM #

Someone needs to get on the ball... jeez!

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By David Reimer | April 6, 2007 @ 3:49 PM #

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By David F. in Murfreesboro, TN | April 6, 2007 @ 8:58 PM #

It was snowing here in Murfreesboro, TN tonight. Not just flurries but really snowing for about 20 minutes or so. We are set to break records for low temps this weekend and we just set records for warmth a couple of weeks ago. It must be the end of the world. just in time for that new movie coming out about the plagues and stuff.

DFW Tornadic Supercell! Comment Posted By Jeri | April 6, 2007 @ 9:52 PM #

Here in Kentucky at least four tornadoes were confirmed from Tuesday's squall line, mostly in the southern part of the state. The NWS page has some interesting shots of the squall line's shelf cloud in different areas and large hail that accompanied the wind damage and tornadoes.
