Tornadic supercells possible again today!

A very interesting setup will prevail across southwest KS and the OK/TX Panhandles today, with strong tornadoes possible by late afternoon/evening as the low-level jet intensifies.  A warm front will be extending WNW to ESE across central KS by 7:00 pm, with a dryline extending south across the central Panhandles.  Low-level shear and CAPE will be maximized over the eastern TX Panhandle, but southwest KS and southeast CO also have sufficient shear/instability for tornadoes.  Shown below is the RUC forecast 0-1 km EHI (left) and 4 km WRF forecast precip for 00z this evening.

The SPC has issued a moderate risk for this area, along with a threat for significant tornadoes.  Based on the RUC and 12 z WRF this morning, we favor the eastern TX Panhandle if a storm will initiate that far south.  However, our plan is to still keep southwest KS in play just in case storms do not initiate further south.  STAY TUNED!

Does anyone know how large the Tulia tornado was on the Fujita Scale???????

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By Jacob | April 23, 2007 @ 1:34 PM #

Well if you take a literal meaning of what Reed said,("large violent") it was F4-F5 I think (weak=f0-f1, strong=f2-f3, and violent =f4-f5, from what I heard)
I haven't gotten used to the new EF scale, so I don't know how that ranks them.

Wow, looks like the apocolypse is going to occur today. It looks so calm right now. Shall be interesting to see how the storms explode over Texas and Oklahoma. Looks like the storms will really kick in when I'm off work, so I'll have to rely on my slow ass dial up connection when I get home. lol

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By Jason | April 23, 2007 @ 6:32 PM #

Shawna - Restart your browser. If that does not work you might need to reboot your PC. Sorry, I think there could be a little memory leak issue with the tracker if you have it pulled up for extended periods. We are looking into a little better implementation of the tracker, but it will take some time to develop.

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By caleb | April 23, 2007 @ 6:32 PM #

Large and Extremly Dangerous tornado just moved through Colorado City. I have radar images as the storm was "Redevloping"

Went from no hook to hook to MAJOR hook and 3.75 hail. I have images as it formed west, moved through, and now east of the city.

Good lord..

Look at the tremendous hook echo on this monster!

Radar -

Storm Relative Velocity -

Can only hope the people in the vicinity of Colby, Kansas have taken cover as a very large tornado is likely on the ground at this time.

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 8:58 PM #

Hook not as evident now, but storm relative velocity continues to show VERY strong rotation.

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 9:15 PM #

Hook echo has redeveloped nicely!

http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=pan&prevzoom=zoom&num=1&frame=0&delay=15&scale=0.287&noclutter=0&ID=GLD&type=N0R&showstorms=0&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&map.x=400&map.y=240&scale=0.287&centerx=271&centery=243&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&lerror=20&num_stns_min=2&num_stns_max=9999&avg_off=9999

Also the cell just west of the Abilene, Texas area is nasty showing rotation also.

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By robbie | April 23, 2007 @ 9:41 PM #

wow, monster supercell to the east of goodland with a beautiful hook. It has split into two supercells!

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 10:01 PM #

Yeah Robbie, that's the cell I've been tracking for well over an hour.
If this cell continues to produce a tornado the people in Atwood, Kansas may be in some trouble.

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 10:17 PM #

This cell is going NUTS!
Now 2 hook echos

Storm relative velocity shows what appears to be 2 couplets (areas of rotation) SW of Atwood, Kansas.

http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=pan&prevzoom=zoom&num=0&frame=0&delay=15&scale=0.261&noclutter=0&ID=GLD&type=N0S&showstorms=0&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&map.x=400&map.y=240&scale=0.261&centerx=238&centery=305&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&lerror=20&num_stns_min=2&num_stns_max=9999&avg_off=9999

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 10:26 PM #

Cell just south of Spur, Texas showing rotation on Storm Relative Velocity.

Rotation noted now on the cell just south of Spur, Texas.

http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=pan&prevzoom=zoom&num=1&frame=0&delay=15&scale=0.252&noclutter=0&ID=LBB&type=N0S&showstorms=0&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&map.x=400&map.y=240&scale=0.252&centerx=11&centery=140&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&lerror=20&num_stns_min=2&num_stns_max=9999&avg_off=9999

I'm sorry that my links run so long.
I'm a newbie to this site, yet have an endless passion for severe weather and tracking it.

Rob

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 10:30 PM #

Very strong rotation on radar just east of Yuma, Colorado

Tornadic supercells possible again today! Comment Posted By AtmosphericWrath | April 23, 2007 @ 11:23 PM #

Where is everyone?
Tremendous hook echo has developed on the cell I've been tracking for the last 2-3 hours.
Atwood, Kansas may be in some serious trouble.

http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=zoom&num=1&delay=15&rbscale=0.19130434782608696&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&ID=GLD&type=N0R&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&showstorms=0&map.x=461&map.y=197&centerx=400&centery=240&lightning=0&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0

Look at that!.

Now this is the rotation on Storm Relative Velocity!
I can only estimate this is a very large tornado.

http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=pan&prevzoom=zoom&num=1&frame=0&delay=15&scale=0.191&noclutter=0&ID=GLD&type=N0S&showstorms=0&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&map.x=400&map.y=240&scale=0.191&centerx=81&centery=464&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&lerror=20&num_stns_min=2&num_stns_max=9999&avg_off=9999
