A damaging tornado touched down today in Northwest Oklahoma City and continued to Piedmont, OK, several miles to the north.  Based on the damage seen on local news, the tornado appeared to be rather strong.  Two people have been reported injured as of 5:30 pm.  The radar image at the time of the tornado is shown below:

Shown below is an image of a rolled semi-truck trailer in NW OKC, along with extensive tree damage.  Based on first-hand reports, and the radar image above, the tornado was most likely rain-wrapped and concealed from view.   TornadoVideos.net storm chasers are currently monitoring intense convection that is heading towards southern OK.  We may head south very soon if these storms hold together.

Wow. At least it was no 1999 tornado. Be safe out there as daylight will start running out soon.

Love this site! It's great for Tornado enthusiasts! Especially this week! I am extemely interested in learning how to chase tornadoes and I was wondering if some one could recomend any specific books, or internet material that best teaches how to predict tornadoes. I've come across a lot of information on the internet and have learned a little, but I would love to know where I can get more information. The only book I can find is "the storm chasing handbook." Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hey Brian,

I think the best way to learn is to look at as many photos of supercell structure as possible, and relate them to the 2-D diagrams you see in books. If you have any specific questions about storm structure or features in any of our photos, don't hesitate to ask!

We'll have the tracker up and running again full-time tomorrow...the area we chased a few days ago has huge data void regions.

It will be good to go tomorrow!

Killer site, Reed! I LOVE storms, specially tornadoes. I'm from northeastern Iowa, 34 and been into tornadoes since age 6. Awsome footage. I found this site from nbc weather + footage and came here week ago last Sunday when you were going thru Iowa to Minn(via GPS) Last tornado I saw was May 2000 that started here in northern Cedar Falls and went e-ne...chased it about 8-10 miles while 1/8 to 1/4 mile from it! Keep up the great work!!

Forgot to say...The May 2000 tornado was I believe a weak F-1 maybe 2 from a supercell rotating(mesocyclone?) Proper term? I have loads of pro/am chasing video. I'd kill to be part of a pro chase team(project vortex, etc)..Even a certified spotter!

Hey Reed,

Do you guys use the WeatherScope product that was developed out of OU? Have any good maps for the midwest area that you could send to me to load into my program? I use it all the time here in NC.

Thanks

SCM

At 8:47 EST this morning, El Dorado has a tornado signature on radar to its due SW moving its way. Looks like it is going to be a very active day in South Texas. The storms are really firing quickly this morning.

Glad you like the site!

We're planning some big upgrades in the future...

Yeah today looks interesting in S TX...I'm just worried about instability and clearing. We're thinking the best chance for clearing is south of Abilene...water vapor shows a clear slot rotating around the base of the trough...so maybe that will help with the clearing. We're leaving in a few minutes..so the tracker should be up and running.

Thanks again!
Reed
