Here is the video from yesterday's tornadoes in eastern New Mexico. Along with a radar image showing our concurrent position! Keep in mind this video is from a wide angle HD camera.

Great video guys. Good luck today.
great video. I don't know if you could see me there but at about 1:37 of your video i was right underneath the tornado. if you look close you can see Coach Bruce in the sidecab of my motorcycle. crazy bastard.
for the record I didn't choke at the end of the ohio state game. one of my ribs had detached and was stuck in my liver. they removed it after the game. no way I was going to miss a solid chase event in SE New Mexico.
well we lived through this.... so haha
Reed, I see this footage on CNN.com. Very impressive. Well done.
That's great footage. I was "watching" you guys truck over from eastern Texas into New Mexico as these storms were building steam.
Question: In the video at around 2:16, what would you estimate the wind speed of that tornado to be, how wide was the spinning debris at the bottom, and how close would you say it would be safe to get to a tornado like that?
CHAD!!
Great to hear from you!
We needed you there with the cooler! HA!
Hi Jeff,
That's great you followed the tracker! We just added a radar overlay and some new enhancements this morning. Today doesn't look very good, but we'll still be chasing western OK.
I believe you're talking about the small "needle" tornado. I'd say winds in there are fairly week...maybe up to 100 mph max since it's such a compact circulation, but probably less than that. You could probably get right next to the tiny debris cloud and be fine. The problem is...it could rapidly strengthen into a much larger, violent tornado in seconds.
If we had a road out there, we would have gotten a lot closer to the needle though.
Take care.
Hey Reed, thanks for that info! That's exactly what I wanted to hear, except for the part about rapid strenghening that is :)
Great news about the tracking enhancements. I was going back and forth between the tracker and Weather.com's new interactive radar maps (which I really like) so it will be great to have everything in one place. Any thoughts of doing a Google Earth network link?
I just saw the video on TWC too, nice stuff.
Way to go CHAMP!!!
I was watching the tornadoes develop by radar, the radar showed 5 possible tornadoes on the ground at once. Great job on the video. Keep the passion going!
Thanks
I know other people are saying they watch the tracker too, but I just need to reiterate HOW COOL it is to be able to sit here, far from the action, and see you guys planted somewhere, with nothing showing on the radar, and then BOOM, you're right there with a rapidly developing supercell on top of you. And your pics & video ain't bad either! Thanks & happy chasing!
Nice stove-pipe at the end. Great video. Hope you continue to get more good video today and in the future.
Reed, that cooler was awesome. We had a tornado touch down by my mom's house just west of Cleveland about 10 days ago. It was an EF-0 and only lasted about 1/8 of a mile but still, I go 1,300 miles to OU for tornados and there was one 2 miles from my mom's house. Go figure. I need to get out to OU and dominate some tornados with you some time. I'll bring the full cooler and sit in the back like old times. Until then, keep getting closer.
Hey, i was in hobbs just south, while all of this was happening...crazy stuff! I was sure we were in for at least some hail but all we had were some killer gusts and pouring rain. Oh well, maybe Tomorrow! I guess u guys will be around here then too.
I think I saw your footage on the weather channel, this afternoon. Too cool! Rock on.
Yeah Hobbs was actually our initial target...we drove through Hobbs and then west to intercept the first storm..and then waited for the main storm to approach from the south. The crazy thing is it had no rain at all for a while...just a massive updraft base!
very good this video.
congratulations.
gee thanks for expecting my city to get ripped apart! haha. Psh thats cool though because im from Abilene anyways! But yea so i walked outside and took some pretty wicked pictures with my cell phone at about 6 i guess, it was crazy so i sent them around. pretty crazy rotation! guess we will see yall sunday afternoon or so says the forcast lol.
wow!!!!! incredible tornado!!!!!!! Need to see the video when you're back in town.
Since Devon Lucie came to talk to some students where I teach, I have been following you guys. I'm looking forward to the DVD and I hope that in the future, near and far, we can find some ways to get your footage and information into the classroom!
Brandon,
You haven't gotten the DVD yet??? I sent it out a few weeks ago. Let me know if you haven't gotten it and I'll fire out another one.
Streaming webcams are very near on the horizon!
Thanks for the post!

Stay tuned...this week looks VERY active for severe weather...especially Wednesday.
pretty cool. better then the little teaser part of the video i saw on my local indianapolis tv station. i'm putting you guys in my favorites. i love, just love watching tornadoes. take care.
Hi Ida...We're glad you enjoyed the video! We'll likely have some more footage tomorrow night...Take care. Reed
Hey, Thanks for the great video...... Sad part is I live in Clovis. Several of my friends lost their homes entirely. This "tiny" terror affected over 500 homes and business in Clovis. Great footage, It's wonderful to know that there are some that keep watch for these wonders to form.
Leslie,
I'm very sorry to hear that your friends lost their homes. Watching radar that night, we were very worried about the residents of Clovis. It's a good thing this storm was predicted so well.
Take care and good luck.
Reed
