News DetailHEAVY FREEZING RAIN CONTINUING!

Intense convective freezing rain has been occurring over Southwest, Central, and Northeast Oklahoma all afternoon, and is expected to continue over night as intense warm advection occurs over the shallow Arctic airmass. With ice accumulations over an inch expected in this area, power outages and treacherous road conditions are inevitable. Our power has flickered several times here in Norman, and we're expecting it to go out permanently at any time. The Storm Prediction Center issued this mesoscale discussion about an hour ago.:

Yes Reed! I was watching radar in OK earlier, and watched a 53 Dbz cell roll through Norman. I wish i were there!
I have some pictures that i need to have resized and Watermarked...I tried to get photoshop but it didnt work...I'll send them to you when i get it done...Or If u want can you resize them and watermark them?
Reed! Are you gunna get any more pictures/ vid of this? I have more snow coming for me! If it gets as good as this morning, I'll film it.
Anyone in Oklahoma Area - I am doing my usual search of Live Feeds - Are any TV Stations currently staying on the air with Full Weather Coverage?
Reed - stay off the roads!! We watched the video - it is amazing that you still have power. Keep inside until tomorrow!
Wow, I've seen thundersnow up here in Wisconsin during some of the most intense blizzards, but I think that's the first time I've seen thunder-freezing rain. One thing that always struck me when I see the effects of an ice storm(either first hand or video), it's usually so quiet and sound intensified, like when tree branches are breaking.
Hope the power won't go out for you all and good luck.
WOW! That's an amazing ice storm. I can't believe it's expected to continue overnight! I hope you guys stocked up on food for the night...doesn't look like it would be a good idea to hit the roads unless you plan to ice skate.
this ice storm reminds me of what happened in january with that ice storm- location wise
My thoughts exactly Donny... hopefully it isn't as bad. *knock on wood* Switch on the 4-wheel drive Reed, you could need it...
I wonder if the local hardware stores have enough generators... good advice Mrs. Timmer ;)
Good advice, smt! ;)
We've had a good bit of rain today, over 0.5" and it's still coming down. I wish this had been snow! (Lets face it, I'd rather have snow than ice!)
you never know aj- i mean i have reports already up to 3/4 inch of ice in parts central and northern oklahoma- and with tommorow being worse then today- well i hate doing this but im knocking on wood
I'm in Pauls Valley, and it's actually nice here. A little cold, and the roads are wet, but nothing like you're getting a little further north (of course, that could change). At any rate, I'm supposed to go to Tecumseh in the morning...wonder what it's going to be like there.
haha. I'm not superstitious, but it doesn't hurt to exercise a little wood-knocking or finger-crossing.;) I would say that for normal people, staying inside is the best bet. For others, let's hit the road, and get the story out there. lol.
Here are some pics from around OU campus today. squirrels were running around everywhere today.

Good pics Wes! And as for the squirrels, I'd shoot at them with a paintball gun, that way everyone knows who was there when the squirrels were there. ;) haha
Everyone in my neighborhood knows which squirrels have come into my yard, because they have pink marks on them. lol. It may not be very humane, but it's sure fun. hehe
How's our winter storm doing?
I wish I had got video of the squirrel I took a picture of in the tree. He kept trying to eat his acorn, but he kept sliding on the branch because of the ice. Then I saw another like 5 squirrels running around chasing each other. They seemed to enjoy the ice more than everyone else did on campus today.
I am currently in norman. There has been some mean thunder and nice blue lightning flashes with this ice storm but i dare say that we have kind of escaped from the worst. I just drove on the roads and they are fine. There are many trees split to to ground and, like Reed says, it's just a matter of time before power goes out overnight unfortunately from the weight of the ice on the line. looking at the radar we are barely missing the outside edge of this current line and yukon peidmont edmond to stillwater is really getting consistently hammered. hopefully it stays like this because i cannot study for finals without power! hope everyone stays safe.
Something I am just realizing by looking at Wes's photos is that there are still a lot of leaves on the trees there. That's got to make things worse as far as trees falling over & everything, since the leaves will catch more ice & make the limbs that much heavier. Whoa!
I liked the last one the best, with the OU in the background - very nice!
You can see the trees with leaves really straining more than others. Pine trees have been hit hard as well. A pine tree at the duck pond across the street had the top branch break, as it fell it broke every branch on the way down. It was kinda cool looking. I frooze my butt of to go get those pictures, my legs were burning for an hour after I got back. The last my fav too.
When do we get to see the pictures, Wes? Where are you going to post them?
Well I've given up on getting any ice here... I guess all I can do is hope that there is something just around the corner... right outside of the current GFS period. Maybe... I don't know... around Christmas?
I guess it would have been really weird if we had gotten ice, considering all of our trees still have their leaves. I wonder what it would have looked like.
heavy freezing rain here in Norman again!
Power failure imminent, lights flickering wildly in south Norman. North norman already without power (Daniel Betten).
still have power but heavy band coming this way looking like the east part of it will hit us...outside it's relatively calm right now...roads not too bad yet temperatures havent dropped below 28 to 30 in norman at least when ive checked
