Check out this incredible, small-scale lake effect event pounding Downtown Duluth today!!!! (Thanks Brady for pointing this out). As a textbook Alberta Clipper passes just to the south of the MN Arrowhead, cold east-northeasterly low-level flow to the north of the system has resulted in a small, but INTENSE lake effect band nested within light-moderate synoptic scale snow. 3+ inch per hour snowfall rates are possible with this band, and the more intense convective elements have 7500+ foot cloud tops!! I'll continue to update the loop below to show the entire evolution of this band. Tim or Brady: if you happen to get any pictures/video of this event PLEASE share them with us!

Pretty sweet i hope Brady can get some good video.
i'm right in the heart of this extremely heavy lake effect snow band in West Duluth, it's unbelieveable! I'd say we've had around 12" of snow, and the heaviest snow didn't really begin til around Noon Today. Not sure if they've had as much snow up over the hill in Duluth, i believe Brady lives up in that area, so he may have to take a lil drive below the hill and get some footage of this event! My batteries in my camera are dead, why does it have to happen when there's such an awesome localized snowstorm going on? I'm kicking myself.. Brady, hope u can get some pics or vids of this lake effect event.
Yeah me to Gotta go eat seya later
Holy crap! I bet it is chaotic up there! Go get 'em Brady and Tim MN!
Hey reed,
Did you see the possible winter storm in the Plains this weekend into early next week. The NWS here in KC was talking about a significant ice storm(s) for the entire region starting around Fri Night and lasting all the way to Tuesday!!! The GFS is indicating a couple inches of precip up around my place. I'm in trouble!!! WOOOOO bring it on!!
O yah and I'm guessing up north in IA/MN/Wi they will see MAJOR snow accumulations as well.
AAAAAAAA IT'S TOO MUCH!!!!!!!! AAAAAAA!!!!!!! =-O

I posted it in the last blog. I dont think anybody saw it.
Michael O: Another winter storm possibly?!?! Dang. Maybe this one will give Kansas some precip... hopefully not the kind I have to scrape off my truck in chunks, but oh well... lol. Will it be more easterly, or does western KS stand a decent chance also?
Nice video Matt!!
Oh man more for Brady and Tim... you guys are using up all the snow for all of us lol :P good luck guys...
Hey Reed if you are still here can i send you the pictures that I took today from the snow storm.
I'm just gonna pull the sled outta the garage then I'll go make a vid!! I think it is a lil heavier down the hill!! I'd say a good 10" here or so!! but like I says... It's really fluffy!!
Between 12-13" here in West Duluth Brady. City buses are stopping service at 6 PM, Blatnik Bridge is shut-down, Bong Bridge is still open as of 4:45 PM local time, cars are stranded per listening to my police scanner. This snow band is INSANE! Some yellow specks on the gr3 radar, 30-35 DBZ'S, now that's some serious snow..ha!
That pipe of snow looks awesome over Duluth right now. Probably one of the best radar loops I've ever seen of lake effect.
I also find it interesting that the lake effect band is in a completely different direction in relation to the rest of the snow.
Can any one find a storm report from june that says WOODFORD CO KY because thats were i live.
yea the snow associated with the clipper is dropping SE due to a NW flow aloft, but surface winds and winds aloft are out of the E-NE, so that's why the snow is moving SW off Lake Superior. Very cool event!! i found some good batteries..i'm going out to take a few pics
Looks like me and AJ are in for it next week!!!
Looks to be Ice!! YES!:D
AJ: Well dude let me take a look.....it seems like you will see some precip nothing earth shattering or anything. Maybe a dusting or two and some ice.
Zack do you mean this?

I'm gonna hold up just a lil bit before I head downtown!! All the idiots are coming home right now!! I( hope this lake effect continues to blow all over us after this system passes!!
Thanks Michael, I'll be on the lookout for it. Nice video Matt!
Appears to be 2 very nice lake streamers right now. One obviously the one slamming parts of Duluth/Superior. The other is now forming around the Bayfield/Washburn/Ashland areas in Wisconsin. I see the heavy snow band is now shifting into Northwest Douglas County including the city of Superior as of 5:28 PM local time, still have a nice E-NE wind out over the lake, i don't think this is going to end here in Duluth until around 8 PM or so.. i posted some pics, check out my page on myspace to view them.. just go to the album named 12/4/07
Caleb, how is this?

This is for the same day, but there is no tornado report. BUT there is a 2.75" hail report for that county:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/070605_rpts.html
I wonder what Joey Sipios (sp??) has to report from this Pacific Northwest storm. OR JOE SURFER!!! :(
Caleb, I'm going to say the picture.
Models are in consistency with this storm... Right now no heavy accumulations are expected.
Someone needs to check out the 6Z Tuesday through 12Z Wednesday model. There are some missing data frames but it looks (literally) INSANE!!!!! I hope this is the precip we've been missing for the last 8 months!

Heidi i saw that same thing.

"Bong Bridge"????
hahahahahahahahaha
Did anyone catch that one?
I'm in northern IL-snow is coming down pretty good! Passes cars in the ditch on the highway!
Surely you've heard of the famous WWII ace pilot Richard Bong?? That's where that comes from!! hehe!!
Once again, as soon as my buddy gets here in just a few minutes I'll run out and get some pics!! I'm thinking from here to Proctor over to WD!! It was letting up, but now it's kinda heavy again!! I'm sure we got near a foot up here!!
I think everyone I know here has made reference to that name! hehe
Never heard of him and just cracked me up! I feel jealous of your foot of snow-we are just suppose to get 1-3 inches/but glad I don't have to shovel it!!!!
the heaviest lake snow band has now shifted out of West Duluth, winds have gone into a N-NE direction, still seeing some light snow out there, but shouldn't add up to more than another inch or so... But, wow what an event! get some good pics Brady. lol yea Bong Bridge-that is a funny one!!
hahahah!
BONG BRIDGE!
GROUND ZERO!
Good luck with the pictures Brady
Hey Michael: Yeah I saw that potentially massive winter storm. Unfortunately I'm going to be out of town this weekend! Mobile, AL is not known for its winter storms
Not to mean any disrespect to Richard Bong, but I had to laugh at that. Niiiiiiice! lol.
I need you guys, or Reed, to help me figure out this situation.
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/index_e.html?id=WHK
I need you to tell me from you're guys point of view, which snow cell is more likely to hit me. It appears that the one N,NW of me will hit me, but the one NW of me thats stronger, seems to have a greater chance of smacking me. Why? Because the wind's are shifting more Easterly then expected..I'm going on my bet either the strong cell will hit, or I wont get anything.
Opinions please.
Here's some pics!! I'm trying to upload some more vid now!!!

ok maybe i didn't put a date on the photo album, so click the one that says intense lake snow band.... ok i'm done now..
These snow photos are pretty awesome. I think Brady ought to get his boat on a steep slope and use THAT as a sled, like a bobsled only bigger. (DO NOT!!!) I am going to go look at land available in Minnesota now. ;) Nice job with the ongoing documentation, everyone.
Got about 5in of snow here in the Buckeye State this morning. Try to get some pics for ya in a few.
If Brady is going to bobsled his boat, I am totally in! Save me a seat!
That would be priceless jackass footage.
Like I said, Brady - DO NOT!!!
:D

Brady I think your having way too much fun in the snow but good pictures.
Just cold and windy here with some ice this weekend sounds like. Snow would be better though.
