Another strong storm system has ejected into the Central Plains and will likely produce severe weather along the Central Gulf Coast, and blizzard like conditions with a synoptic scale Lake Effect snow event in Michigan.
I (JY) will talk about the south side of the midlatitude cyclone, and Reed will have another update later today with the north side, as well as updates with any big developments.

The SPC included most of Alabama, and South Mississippi under slight risk for severe weather Friday:

Forecast CAPE is relatively low with about 1000 j/kg near the immediate coast, but, the 850 mb winds are very impressive with possibly 50 Kts well inland!

The current dewpoint in Mobile is 49, thanks to a disturbance that moved through yesterday. But you cannot underestimate the quickness of the moisture rebound thanks to the Gulf waters (~70 offshore).

Here is a look at the surface features: Note the heavy snow symbol near Grand Rapids by Friday night.

The front stalls along the Coast during the weekend which is great news for the drought plagued southeast states! Another chance for thunderstorms will be possible late Saturday and into Sunday, then a big cool down after the first of the year. Check out the longwave trough along the East Coast!

Reed will have more updates through the day, with cool loops! He will also be documented the snow side Friday night in Grand Rapids. I will be in Mobile watching the development. One thing about severe weather along the Coast is if we get a good southerly flow with thunderstorms moving in from the Gulf waters, spin ups, like the Pensacola tornado in October can happen insanely fast. It's very tricky!

Well we ended up with about 5 inches of new snow. I guess a white xmas and a white new years isn't all that bad :)

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 12:04 PM #

haha! Sounds like fun Donny. I guess Tim, you and I showed up with perfect timing ;) Monte, I only have about 4" out here. I guess I was right; the further east it traveled, the more snow it dumped. And you're right, having white holidays isn't so bad.

Yeah, today's my last day at home before my trip to South Carolina to see family. Thanks Brady!

Just got off the phone with my Bro who is a school teacher in Bama and is obviously on vacation this week. He said they had a small storm just east of B-Ham that was moving quick and dropped about .31in of rain with some thunder and lighning not much else. After that he said it got muggy, he has 68 with a dew point of 65 at 1115 cdt. Looks like more could be on its way with the front just entering NW Bama.
Ohio is cloudy with rain not too far off.

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By JY | December 28, 2007 @ 12:24 PM #

I am headed into work to cover the weather. I was out on a story when within 30 min I have several warnings on my phone. I am watching the storms just to my west moving onshore. It will be fun!

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Zack | December 28, 2007 @ 12:29 PM #

Hey guys, Last night we got some heavy wet snow here in south OKC. I must say, I have never seen flakes so big! They were at one point roughly the size of golfballs. We got a quick half inch to an inch accumulation. Hmmm. Severe weather today near the gulf? I like it! ;)

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Darrin | December 28, 2007 @ 12:35 PM #

It'll only be fun for me when I know people are out there mobilized keeping an eye out. I sorta wonder if the public there is all aware of what can potentially happen with this.

Remember it was an unaware Florida, not Greensburg, that caused the most loss earlier this year ... hope everyone in Bama is going to be OK.

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Brady MN | December 28, 2007 @ 12:36 PM #

Wow!! I hope you guys can get some ugly non damaging storms!! I think our next Slight risk will be quite some time from now!! Good Luck!!

AJ, Too bad Minny aint on the way to SC!! You should try to convince your Dad to take a 15hr Detour up I-35 on the way back!! JK

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 12:39 PM #

Zack: heavy and wet? Doesn't sound like what we got further north... ours is fine, dry powder. I guess that's my luck huh? haha Now for the fun part: removing it from the driveway again... oh well...

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 12:43 PM #

haha. Ahh, I could try to convince him Brady, but he has a pention for heading some place warm for the winter... hehe jk. That'd wouldn't go over very well, I guarantee it... maybe during storm season, who knows? ;)

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Zack | December 28, 2007 @ 12:54 PM #

yes AJ, it was a very heavy wet snow lol. It lasted for a few hours and accumulated very quickly! Yeah only here is the thing, the snow didn't accumulate on the roads or driveways. So HA too bad for you! LOL;)

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 12:56 PM #

Ahh, you lucky duck... hahaha. Oh well, I won't have to deal with snow for the rest of the week, so I'm happy. Warmer temps and mild chances of rain, here we come! lol

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Heidi | December 28, 2007 @ 1:40 PM #

Zack, our snow "flakes" the other day were like that too ... the biggest I'd ever seen! I say "flakes" thought because I think it was really more like clumps than single flakes.

Oh yeah, and:

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Michael O | December 28, 2007 @ 2:51 PM #

Hey guys and gals I was checking out the Outlaw Chasers blog and they said they were chasing in Mississippi today! That's quite the haul from Kansas!! :o

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 3:03 PM #

Dang! That is pretty far for KS chasers... I wish I would've left for South Carolina today, I might've seen some awesome weather! haha. Good luck to the Outlaws!

Michael O., if you're like me, you're bored at home, so you've gone to watch old re-runs from past chases. haha

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By JY | December 28, 2007 @ 4:25 PM #

Thanks Heidi! The severe weather threat ended an hour or so ago for me. No damage to report along the Central Gulf Coast. There may be some redevelopment later... but with the atmosphere worked out, I doubt the storms would be as strong.

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Corey | December 28, 2007 @ 4:32 PM #

REED. MSU vs BC in half an hour. Your phone is off. I think I'm going to eastown to watch it since we don't have ESPN. We're getting a nice coat on the ground, hopefully I'll be able to do some donuts on the way.

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By tim jacobs | December 28, 2007 @ 5:22 PM #

Hey guys, how is everyone??

rain is coming down hard here and it has been blowing a gale all day.... there has also been big drop in pressure, im still yet to see it hit stormy on my barometer lol...

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By zack | December 28, 2007 @ 7:04 PM #

Hey guys, sorry I left like suddenly..... Had to get rid of a trojan on my PC. Anyway, yeah Hiedi I agree, they looked more like clumps than flakes, so yeah. The snow hasn't even melted where I am, we have been sitting at or below freezing ALL day! Currently 29 degrees. Well looks like the snow train will finaly come to an end after this last teeny storm between saturday and Sunday. Then it's back to the typical mild Oklahoma winter for awhile:(

Hey Tim, how are ya! Finally some action for ya eh?

Anyway guys, I'm leaving to go see the Chipmunk movie(completely off the subject I know.. lol) Bye!

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 7:08 PM #

haha. I wanted it to warm up more here, so my shoveling would be easier, but it never cracked 35. I guess that's what I get for relying on the sun to do my chores for me ;)

Well, hope everyone has fun on New Year's. This might be my last comment post until 2008! Tonite, I'm off to see I Am Legend (also off subject, but oh well). See you guys later!

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By Susan | December 28, 2007 @ 7:52 PM #

YEA!!! It snowed! beautiful, big, flakes! We got around 5 inches-all while at work. It is so pretty outside! Roads weren't that bad on the way home!

Happy trails AJ! Hope it is nice and warm where your heading!

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By zack | December 28, 2007 @ 10:56 PM #

I bet that made you happy Susan...lol. Anyway, the Chipmunk movie was very good, although the ending was a little dumb. Hope they make a second one! Looks like the quiet weather is finally here with the snow train comming to an end:( Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

I'm off to bed, goodnight everyone.

Severe SE, Snow Great Lakes Comment Posted By AJ | December 28, 2007 @ 11:02 PM #

I'm wrong again: THIS comment will be my last post on here for 2007. I'm off to the Coast, in search of warmer weather for a week. I'll see you guys in 2008!

PS: I Am Legend is amazing! (If you like sci-fi drama. ;)
