Please post your comments about "Tornado Hunters", a documentary featuring the Outlaw Chasers, which was shown last night on Court TV (soon to be TruTV). I thought the show was very entertaining with some great close-up footage, and definitely shed a positive light on storm chasers as a whole. It was interesting to see the Mulvane, KS (June 12, 2004) and Throckmorton, TX (April 7, 2002) tornadoes from different angles.

Wish I would have seen it, don't have a tv right now just cable internet...Just saw a spanish language tornado show with a younger Josh Wurman good footage they were trying out a remote control helicopter with a camera, after the war is over they should use the predator drones for tornado research. I hope everyone had a great Christmas/Holidays. Would like to hear about ET someday.
Same thing happened to me. I was looking forward to watching it and then completely forgot about it. Maybe they will air a rerun of it sometime.
It's on right now!!
I thought I was pretty good, a lot of good footage. This by far beats the Desperate Housewives "tornado" episode haha. Does anyone know these guys personally? Are they really "redneck" or did it just portray them like that? I’m not saying anything bad about them, I mean come on, I'm from west Texas. I liked the show and they seemed like really down to earth cool guys.
I thought it was really good, and down to earth as Josh said. I love the fact that Randy said if 1 person was saved because he made them pay attention to weather then it was worth it. Great job.
Hey guys..... wish we had court tv here, would of loved to of watched it.....
sorry i wasnt on yesterday, we lost bour internet again and have just go it back ths morning..... hope ll had a great christmas!
this is off topic, sorry guys, but i wasn't able to watch this show last night, i was at work.. Brady, lake effect snow here in Duluth Today, it's already snowing a bit here in West Duluth (8AM), 850 mb temp is pretty marginal right now -6 C, surface temps in the mid 20s/low 30s, also a bit marginal, but nontheless were seeing lake snow develop right now and it's moving west. I wonder if this will turn into another heavy lake effect snow event here in parts of the city Today? HMMMMM you know i'll be watching it
Hey guys hope everybody had a great Christmas. I think i am about to go deaf because ive been around kids for the last 2 days and they dont stop screaming but today should be good im going to my uncles place and the youngest one there will be 13. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
I saw this show last night, recorded the replay. It was really great to see, some fantastic footage. Randy is my cousin, a very tell it like it is guy. Amazingly well done for guys who dont have a university meteorological staff behind them, just working out of their garage! I just want to see mor of the camanator footage. Great Job!!!
Happy Boxing Day everyone!! Especially to the Canadians and Tim J!! I thought the show was well done!! Great footage!! Now I understand the "outlaw" part better, I kinda was expecting an FU get outta my way attitude, but that aint the case at all!! Dirt roads, night chasing, and core punching are against the chasing rules from what I've learned and I agree that those rules sometimes need to be broken!! I seen they used Wurmans face once, but they didn't say anything bad, just they play a different game!! Actually Kinda looked like a plug for Wurman to me!! Anyway Great Job Randy and Lenny!! Hope to cross paths some day!!
Happy Boxing Day everyone!! Especially to the Americans and Brady J!! I couldn't watch the show because Canada sucks and doesn't have those channels...Oh well it'll be on someday for me to watch.
Offtopic: I'll be filming my friends fireworks on New Years Eve. My neighbour will be also setting some off. I'll share it with you guys once 2008 begins! :) But don't get drunk(Brady and others) or high, because you might go crazy from watching funny colours!
well i really enjoyed the footage- i respect what the outlaw chasers do- i kinda got messed up inside again when the greensburg footage came- but overall i give them as many stars for this footage as possible
Hey guys, I forgot to watch it last night, I was to busy with Christmas and everything. I bet it was a great show.
By the way it's snowing pretty good here in south Oklahoma city right now, with temperatures hovering just above freezing. Just by looking, I think I have a good half an inch to an inch of snow on the ground! Figures, It snows before and after christmas!!! lol :P
Well I didn't have cable so I couldn't see the show. So I am looking at their upcoming schedule and don't see if coming on again. Does anyone know when it will be on again ?
I have no clue monty... INSANE snow is comming down right now! 1" per hour rates are developing!! AAAAAAAAAAAA!
I thought I'd go ahead and say, once again, that Court TV isn't one of the two channels we can pick up here in the ruralist reaches of the land, so I of course have yet to watch this. (Maybe someone will YouTube it like the Discovery series?!)
:)
The Snow continues to come down, although decreasing in overall intensity:(
I have a good 2" on the grass! Yeah Hiedi, I forgot to watch it myself, maybe someone will youtube it like you said?
As soon as it makes it to youtube (which I'm sure it will) I'll expect Heidi to be the first to find it!! She's pretty good at finding the hard to find vids!!
I watched it last night.. from Canada.
Not sure I like the attitude swings, but there was some good video for sure.
Only the snide comments about other chasers keep me from giving it two thumbs up.
The Twister sisters were on last night too and had a pretty good story line.
They took a family out chasing that they had helped rescue a few years earlier after a tornado destroyed their home.
Both shows had a Greensburg segment that was fascinating and disturbing at the same time.
All these new shows have really convinced me I'm never going down there to chase. I don't want to see that on purpose. I don't want to see it at all. I think that image from Lanny's show last night of them driving through the destroyed neighborhood in Kansas with all the debris in the trees will be in my head for a long time.
I don't care to ever see another tornado hitting any kind of building.
Just my place of employment PB! I wouldn't mind watching the ol shop get leveled!! Usually only 3 of us there at a time and we'd be watching it like idiots!! hehe
LOL Brady, thats harsh;)
Snows over....and melting! nooooooooooo!
It is definitely a very sobering, emotionally challenging experience to see fresh tornado damage. I know I've told this story numerous times before, but for anyone who hasn't heard it ... in Sept. '06, Reed & Joel chased a storm and got footage of a tornado that touched down 4 miles from my house. Before I even knew that the video existed, my husband and I drove over to the place to see the damage (we'd heard about it on our TV station and in the newspaper the next day). A trailer had been turned inside-out, another frame home was heavily damaged, tree-tops sheared off, etc. ... There's just something very chilling about seeing bits of pink insullation clinging to barbed wire and sheet metal wrapped around things and hanging in odd places. That was the first time that either of us had ever seen "fresh" tornado damage, and it gave us an especially sick feeling because we had literally only missed that tornado hitting us by about 5 minutes (the rotating wall-cloud came right over-top of us). ... I'd say that I "can only imagine" what everyone who entered Greensburg that night went through, but because I have seen Dick & Darrin's footage (and although I haven't seen Lanny & Randy's yet, I'm sure its safe to include theirs too) I really leaves me with that same sort of overwhelming, core-shaken feeling. Obviously, I can only hope that I never have to encounter that situation personally, but I'll say that because I have seen the videos and have read what those who were there have had to say about the whole thing makes me feel like I would have a better idea of what to do and how to do it, as well as what not to do. ... A huge digression from the main topic here, I know, but I hope all of those guys realize that they helped people who were not even in the state of Kansas that night, as far as emergency response and preparedness is concerned.
I want to re-emphasize something, since after reading what I just wrote I'm thinking that the last part of things looks a little different from how I intended to sound. I said:
"Obviously, I can only hope that I never have to encounter that situation personally, but I'll say that because I have seen the videos and have read what those who were there have had to say about the whole thing makes me feel like I would have a better idea of what to do and how to do it, as well as what not to do. ... A huge digression from the main topic here, I know, but I hope all of those guys realize that they helped people who were not even in the state of Kansas that night, as far as emergency response and preparedness is concerned..."
I just need to re-state (since this is what I was trying to say up there), emphatically, that everyone who encountered the Greensburg aftermath and did what they could to help in any way *not only* helped the victims, but they *also* helped people like me feel like I am now a little better prepared to deal with something in the heat of the moment, if I ever had to. That's pretty big. And that's all I wanted to clarify. :)
I agree with what you just said Heidi!! It also reminds me I should pack a lil better for emergency response when I chase!! Bottled water and bandages can go a long way.. but not as much as keeping a cool head!! I keep thinking what if I did chase the night Northwood was removed from the map?? What if I pulled in to see some of those pics first hand?? What would I have done?? What could I have done?? Would I have been helpful or just in the way?? Lots to learn
although i respect all 3 shows that have come out recently, i have yet to watch any of them. id rather watch my storms of 2007 dvd.
Loved the footage from Outlaw Chasers, especially from Mulvane and 5/29/04. Their attitude is a bit over-the-top, but the quality of the video more than made up for that.
I also caught parts of the Twister Sisters show and was fairly disappointed. Seemed to focus too much on the people rather than the storms. But that wasn't the really bad part. There was blatantly obvious manipulative and/or lazy editing that about made me turn it off. Probably the worst instance was the bit on the Hill City/WaKeeney storm in which they kept cutting between legit shots of the crew watching that storm from Hwy 283 and inexplicable clips of some huge, backlit stovepipe... LOL. Gimme a break. Even viewers who weren't familiar with the storm could probably see right through that... WTF are these producers thinking? The sad part is, most of the storms covered were exciting enough to stand on their own merit without that kind of bs.
Let me first just start off by thanking Reed and company for posting and for all of your comments, good and bad.
We "Outlaws" also want to thank everyone who tuned in to watch with that said,
As to the many who do know us such as Reed, Dick M, Darrin and the like.... know that the show protrayed us just as we are and for that we are greatful.
I hope you all liked the show and hope you all had a merry Christmas,
Lanny
IT'S LANNY IN PERSON AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.... in other stuff 1 tornado report today
5 HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED. TREES AND POWER LINES DOWN. POSSIBLE TORNADO.
I watched this show and was very much pleased. I'm glad to see this go 26 comments without hate toward those guys or questions as to their real feelings about Greensburg.
I linked up to my first storm message board today, a pretty tightly run place that's excellent with information and rich with storm superheroes. It seems there's been a loss of control at some degree of users with problems with the OCs there, though. I was kind of surprised; I thought that the problems some of the community has with them weren't actually real and that they've sort of done a Marilyn Manson-type routine (M.M. seems mean and evil on stage, and despite the fact I'm not a huge fan of his music, he's actually a pretty intellectual and calm guy in person).
I'm sure nobody here has any doubt whatsoever about these guys, wherever or however they were educated. They know more about storms than I'll probably ever know, people can be smart without getting degrees. And I'm pretty sure they'd be there for anyone if they had to pull 'em out of a car somewhere.
I had been so convinced that the "outlaw" thing was just a part of the way that CTV thought of the show, and figured their blogs just had sockpuppets making the hateful comments (i.e. fake accounts they and CTV made up). It's disturbing to know those death wishes were very likely, very much real.
Disturbing.
In regards to Greensburg and the chance I'd have of running into destruction and keeping memories of it when I finish my studies on this subject and get some favorable opinions that I'm ready to chase, I think I'm at a sort of advantage. Because I lived in Wichita Falls in '79 (albeit as a wee lad), I got to witness thirty years of scars in that town. My grandmother's house was leveled. My babysitter, a woman who was a second mother to me until I was eight, suffered her home being leveled as well. We lost friends and had many more injured physically and psychologically.
So in my case, I'd throw myself into it as much as I can. My entire life outside of a brat toddler has been filled with interest of that storm and the ramifications still felt in my hometown. Although fortune spared us from basically anything (though the other side of my street was wiped), and though I was too young to remember anything, I still feel a certain brotherhood with tornado victims, and I've donated for both Greensburg and the Florida storms in February, to the Red Cross.
If I ever witness anyone with their lives freshly wrecked, there's a duty inside of me now. I'm sure all the gen-Xers on up from my hometown feel the same way. Though witnessing suffering will bring me sorrow forever, the overwhelming need to help will take precedence. Hopefully, though, every tornado in the world from now on will be huge, photogenic EF-3-5's sitting still in open fields like Manitoba and far away from harming people. Someone fix the matrix, quick ...
yeah there is only 1 thing i didn't like is so much cussing. but other than that it was amazing!
Hey guys. I saw the show last night, and loved it. The close-up footage was awesome, as well as the layout of the show in general. Definitely a different view of storm chasing than the Discovery Channel showed. Now my list of chasers to tag along with someday has grown to include the Outlaw Chasers ;)
Things like the cussing, attitude and "posturing," if you will, don't bother me as much as it does some people. Probably because I'm a teenager and I see it all the time in person, so it doesn't affect me any. That, and people like watching that aspect of the show, as well as the awesome footage I think.
The Greensburg part of the show was awfully revealing of character, and a good part to have in the show. Lanny, Randy and crew aren't who they seem to be at first; proof positive that you have to get to know someone before you can make a judgement... much like chasing itself.
Overall, I enjoyed the show, and I'd love to see more. Kudos Outlaws!
-Lanny
Oh boy oh boy. Moving footage at the end. Those pictures are so much like the Falls, from the tornado itself on to the level of destruction, that it brought back so many memories.
You have seen destruction, the loss of people to nature, and the beginnings of scars that you know will last forever. But you put your hand in and helped them.
In part we all know it's the rush and excitement and we all know at any moment we could lose our own lives on the battlefield. But we all know the brotherhood, with the victims and with all the chasers who despite what they say still have respect for you (which I'd wager at 99%). What you guys do - and if I can succeed when I start what WE will do - saves lives when we go in with the right mindset, and it's done by defending those lives against, for lack of a better term, the "oppression" of the randomness of mother nature's temper.
Every shot we take is a battle won; every piece of data we capture is a battle won; even a bust is a victory because it was watched by our eye. Any call made to warn, even if it serves only to personally describe the intensity of a storm already on radar or seen from different angles by different people, saves lives of many potential victims.
It's like war, except even though our lives are at risk we don't have to kill another.
And I'll stop there before I start sounding like some foolish version of the Shakespearian Henry V. My point is: don't quit because of Greensburg. Like so many of our armed forces did after finding the horrific concentration camps in Germany, you have to keep going. Don't let Greensburg be your swan song.
Besides, if you drop out like the show said, it would be like Patton quitting after North Africa (and yes, all comparisons to the take-no-B.S., competitive attitudes shared are totally and respectfully implied).
yeah I thought that the greesburg KS tornado was a half a mile wide but they said it went to one side of the winshelod to onother...... I guess it was a mile wide with winds at least 205-209 MPH I think that i could have been stronger. but AJ is right. it revelid what a classic storm chaser dose. I've never seen a storm chaser do that.
The key point we're all making, but somehow talking around, is this: don't quit, no matter what. Greensburg was actually my catalyst to become more of a chaser than just a casual weather nerd. I say "Go after that storm!" I agree with Darrin, in that it's more personal now, after May 4th. It's more of a duty than just a hobby. Hopefully we don't lose sight of that duty in our own personal wants and gains...
Since Caleb mentioned it already, I will now weigh in on the cussing :) Again, I have not seen the show, but I have seen the YouTube video adversiting the show ...
I have to say that, personally, I have a strong dislike for having to hear anyone use language that is not fit for a PG movie. However, that absolutely *does not* mean that I am going to form rock-solid opinions on someone's overall character just based on whether or not they cuss. I think that many people who express negative feelings about the Outlaw Chasers are probably automatically turned off by the cussing, but only because they can't or don't want to try to see past it. I think Lanny has always been pretty nice when he's posted here, and I always think of that even when I see the YouTube video.
I don't know ... I think that some people are too geared toward fastening onto things they don't like about people and then become determined to add to the negatives, instead of keeping themselves open to and tallying the positives too. Eventually, if a person is at all worth your time in consideration, the positives should begin to overwhelm the negatives and leave you with a more rational assessment overall. Just my $.02 :)
AND IT'S SNOWING HERE!!!!!! THE GROUND IS COVERED!!!!!
unforunantly it was 1.7 miles wide caleb- a massive tornado none the less- and you know there is one thing i guess to be gratefull for- that remarkably- there was only a few deaths- it could have been worse- anyone remember the hallam nebraska tornado- that one was an hp- according to the storm survey done- it was 2.5 miles wide-and rain-wrapped- so you might want to say- that in theory- if the greensburg tornado was rain-wrapped- that the death toll could have been worse- alot worse- but still devstating
ohh hush heidi lol im pissed we have light snow here now- but since its dark i can't record it lol
Hey guys, how is everyone??
how is the snowfal where everyone is?? read further up that aqt one point it was up to an inch and hour in OKC where Zack is..... did anybody get a white christmas aswell??
Well said everyone! I love opinion writing... haha. Tim, my Christmas was kind of white... about 50%. lol. Speaking of white... and thanks Donny for letting me know about this...

:D
Dude, you just got called Donny Darko... lol. That's different ;) NWS and local guys are calling for about the same snow amount, so I guess I better keep an eye on it... haha
Hey guys, I'm just getting reports from the NWS that a little over 6" of snow fell just to the south and east of me earlier today. I alone saw about 3.5" of the white stuff( which quickly melted away as soon as the snow ended, due to warm ground temps and air temps at 36 degrees). As AJ mentioned earlier, a new storm system will be effecting the central/southern plains tomorrow. Snow will develop out in Kansas, ( where AJ lives) and spread to the south during the day Thursday. The snow will arrive in central Oklahoma - where I live, thursday night and linger into Friday morning. 1-3" of snow is very possible, with higher totals to the north. A winterstorm watch has been issued in Western Kansas, including Dodge city, Garden City, and Witchita. This watch may need to include northern Oklahoma, and a snow advisory farther south iver central and western Oklahoma. I'll be watching this event.... Sounds interesting. We are on a very fast track!
I'm a bit late but here is my take on the show.
It was a awesome show, and the footage these men have gotten is remarkable. Honestly they arent as "Outlaw" as i expected them to be. So what if they break rules? Rules are made to be broken...And they've both clearly stated they know they are risking life and limb doing it.
I understand the psychological effects of coming across fresh damage, maybe not of that magnitude(ef5/1.75miles wide) But i have been on scene of a F4 that leveled Parsons Manufacturing in Roanoke IL(Many may have seen this on Storm Stories) within 20-30minutes of the occurence, but that wasnt like a whole town. It was one building. I also was in Morton IL within a hour of the F3 demolishing 18 of 24 apartment buildings, and that hit me a lot harder than Parsons plant. The damage to these Wood Structures was so much worse than Parsons Metal Structure(Understandably) I talked with a women who pointed out her apartment to us...Where her room was there was a full sized dumpster. I deffinitly thought about what i was doing in chasing storms then...But then i realized not one News Station here in Central IL, went live for more than 5minutes...and none warned of a tornado on the ground. There were TONS of spotters on the ground, and tons of reports going into NWS. NWS was overwhelmed with radio reports, and calls, they had trouble distributing information to the media outlets. Thats why now you see alot of news station taking calls live calls from spotters, and NWS employees. Because it is able to cut the strain on the NWS, and ultimately LIVE TV does kind of spread warnings faster, along with updated information, and people live in the field. Severe Studios is a very good example of a great set up team to get the warnings out.
But the over all meaning of the huge above paragraph is this. Everyone out there is needed, whether it be scientist studying the storm/atomosphere, Chaser/Spotters who call things in, or aquire media outlet connections to get the warning out. Honestly, if the media hadn't been so fast to deliver the warning to Greensburg, the Death Toll would have been MUCH MUCH higher. Instead, Because of Spotters, Chasers, and NWS Employees, they were able to achieve 20+minutes of warning time. AND IT COULDNT BE DONE(overall) WITHOUT PEOPLE LIKE LANNY AND RANDY, REED AND JOEL, KORY AND KENNY, DICK AND DARRIN, AND MANY MANY MORE.
I just finally got done watching it. I was hesitant watching it but came out very impressed. I was expecting some "good ole boys" perspective but got an impressive sounding, somewhat educational view with much, much, much better video of tornado's than that Tornado Chasers show or whatever it was called a few weeks ago. Some funny moments-but at the end-some serious moments. I would definitely watch it again-and I wouldn't hesitate to let the kids watch it. Yes-there was some language in it-but probably the worst was bleeped out.
I would rate it very highly/especially for the footage.
Ben,
since you were the one to alert me to a "spam issue" I would appreciate it if you looked at my post on the previous topic (The Merry Christmas One).
I totally forgot about it. Didn't get home until after 10 pm and then did other things and by the time I watched TV it was 2 a.m. and it wasn't on at that time. For my luck I probably just missed it (assuming it was aired in Canada??)...Hope it ends up on Youtube!
hey guys, how is everyone?
i finally got my vne from the windstorm we had a few weeks back on december 2nd, here is the link.... sorry for the pour camera quality, i was using my phone only 2 megapixels lol......also i should say this camera isnt sensative so you can how strong the wind was....

hope you enjoy them, please let me know what you think aswell....
LOVE THE ENTHUSIASM!!
First, Lanny or Randy, if you read this post, please email me. I think what you did in Greensburg was an admirable thing. You were on TV, warning people before the storm hit. You met with the victims the next day. You found a way to get in and help. Not all chasers do this. Some are just out for the thrill ride. I may not agree with all of your methods, but I am glad you were there to help.
Storm reporting is something SevereStudios really takes pride in. I love that you stated int the show that your priority out in the field is warning the public. NWS reports, Media Reports, etc. I watched another show where the chasers were joking around about calling in the reports to the NWS. That is unacceptable in my opinion. I am glad you take the time to report what you see in the field.
While we probably wouldn't agree on everything about chasing, I think we have similar philosophies on warning the greater public.
Ben, thanks for the kind words about the SevereStudios.com Chase Team. We work hard to provide accurate first hand reports to the NWS and other media outlets. Our team approach is working well and we are continuing with that initiative in 2008. We have added members to our team to better cover the upper Midwest.
If anyone is interested in joining our team, please visit our website for more information.
Reed and Joel, great to see you are helping other chasers get exposure. Great coverage on this show! Hope to see you at the NSCC.

Hey Guys,
Thank you all for the kind words, I know I can speak for all of us Outlaws when I say that.
I will not go into detail about Greensburg or the like just because I think it would be pointless at this time, however; it was worse than what you all saw in the video.
I am Glad you all liked it for the most part and just so you know it will air again this Saturday at 9:00pm. So for those of you who missed let us know what you think.
Kenny,
Thank you for the invatation, although I must say that we have a team and joining or trying to work with another just would not work...but thank you anyways.
I hope you all had a great Chirstmas!! Take care,
Reed give me a call sometime,
Lanny
Kenny, Randy here just read your comment and wanted to say thank you me and Lanny have had a love for tornado chasing long before we even met each other. And Lanny has always tried to do his best to give an adiquate warning to the public. We have long been given a bad rep. by others in our field and though we don't advise others chase the way we do they need to understand we didnt just waltz up to the first twister we ever saw it took many encounters to get us to the level of chasing we are currently at and im sure REED would tell you the same thing this game we all love is not the same way it was when we first started out so many people are trying to do this now and so few of them are really giving the public what they really need at that very moment a chance to save their lives. I know what tornados do to the human body I have seen it with my own eyes and so has Lanny we were both thankful that the producer of our show showed our feeling's and pain without mentioning the the person we both saw I felt that was in very good taste. And were glad to know you work with a team there is strength in numbers and an extra set of eyes on a storm is envaluable I like you find it unacceptable that chasers would be jokeing around about giving a warning. I know im not the kind of role model that the chaser community really wants to see but I am a real and honest careing man who hurts like any other me and Lanny fit together im the yeng to his yang whenever we are on a storm together I know without a doubt he his giving the warning that is needed at that time and I can then focus on our teams goal of probeing the twister and now that I have a cell phone im able to give reports when were not together. It is rather sad to me that so many so called chasers spend so much of their energy trying to tear down their fellow man instead of asking themself how can I be a better chaser us Outlaw have little mottos we try to live by focus on shooting good video it will take you places your mouth cant, small and tactical is always more practical, your only as good as your last storm, and never be afraid to live your dreams. Kenny what us OUTLAWS wanted out of this deal most of all was to show the world and our peers that is ok to be different and crazy as long as your good at what you do and we would like to think that our show put the chaser community in a good light though we don't always seem to show it how we reperesent chasing to the public really means alot to us. And I want to close in saying thanks to all the other chasers who do the right thing I know many of you did all you could that night giving the warning that was needed thanks
im about to go home and watch it. most of the guys on ST had good things to say about it. im glad you got some exposure and appreciation that you guys deserve. sure, you're not the typical chaser/wx weenie, but you get sh*t done. good job man.
