Here is video from the peak of the lake effect blizzard in Grand Rapids, MI from last night between 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm EST, as 40-50 mph wind gusts and 2 inch per hour snowfall rates created near whiteout conditions and very treacherous roads. This lake effect event was a classic southwesterly flow event for Southwest Lower Michigan, and Grand Rapids is usually the hot spot for snow accumulations from these events. Shown below is a radar loop from the morning of Dec 23 through late evening:
awesome video Reed!!!!!!! Susan, the Bears suck! GO PACKERS! sorry folks, just had to throw that in, that game made me sick.. anywho, back to weather talk.. much more enjoyable, ended up with about 8-10 inches of snow here in Duluth from that powerful winter storm this past weekend.. Lots of blowing/drifting as well, one heck of a storm, i can't believe how fast the surface low deepened, awesome stuff! Brady, looks like another snow event here in MN on Tuesday, probably looking at 1 to perhaps 2 or 3 inches from that system. Could be dealing with a bit of lake effect snow here in DLH sometime Wednesday/Thursday if that high to our north sets up just right, could have a nice E-NE wind for a time.. Keep an eye on it.. Merry Christmas Eve to all, be safe everyone, and enjoy the snow, if your lucky enuf to have some
Wow, looks like what was going on in Green Bay too, though not as much snow since we got 5.6 inches here. The western and central parts of Wis got more, with LaCrosse getting about 11.9 inches. The winds here were very impressive most of the day, I even saw a few snow funnels whip up and spin along for a while at times.
My friend lives in Grand Rapids and she said she saw the same thing, though it wasn't fun for her to get home from work.

Nice video, Ground Zero. A little more impressive than the 1" we had a couple of days ago here in Elk City. However, I do prefer country music over Christmas music for background noise.
Good job Reed! I wish our little "blizzard" down here in KS was as impressive as that one. And the Christmas music was ok, but if you're going to play that, make sure it's something awesome, like Trans-Siberian Orchestra. That's Christmas music! haha
tim-Bears do suck this year-but they smoked the Packers at least!!!!!hahahahah
I agree with AJ-TSO would really rock for a snowy video. hahahah
Merry Christmas!!

i think its a resobable bet there ez as verticle shear is very supportive of them- and i have no reason to dissagree- and looking at surfaced based capes approaching 1000 j/kg in the southeastern parishes of louisiana and southern miss. thats where i think the greater tornadic threat is simply because the higher cape values
We always love how you incorporate the musical selection into everything. The "Up on the Housetop..." was classic! :D If Joel wants some Country, next time throw in a "Rusted Chevrolet..." clip or one of those spoof songs!
Posted By Brady MN | December 24, 2007 @ 2:33 PM #
Hehe!! Yep Rusty Chevrolet by DaYoopers!! Click my name for a sample!! Yeah I'd say about 10" here!! I haven't seen snowbanks this high in years!! I love it!! Merry Christmas all!!
Posted By Brady MN | December 24, 2007 @ 2:52 PM #
Great vid Reed!! Awesome footage!! I took a few pics I'll upload in a bit!! my cam didn't wanna work so hot yesterday after getting really cold in my pocket!!
Brady, I bet you're a happy camper today. You'll be one of the lucky ones and get a white Christmas. Can you say "fire up the sleds"? haha. And if you want good Christmas music covers, look up Bob Rivers. He's pretty hilarious in his remakes.
Good job Caleb. All I have to say for that one is "Ahh, bright light!" lol. With about 30 seconds left, you kind of look into the sun... ;)
haha. All in a day's work huh Caleb? ;) At least you didn't need stitches, those suck, especially when you need 12 of them to hold your ear back on. lol.
Yeah LOL I've been in an estamaited 120 MPH microbirst outside with baseball sized hail and VERY heavy rain and got glass all over your face from the neighbors house.
Posted By Brady MN | December 24, 2007 @ 4:13 PM #
Brady: verrrrry nice! haha. You should so jump that and get it on video! That would make for excellent Christmastime viewing. :P
Caleb, that sounds pretty insane. My little escapade didn't have 120 mph winds with it, but a piece of flying debris did come across the side of my head, and leave a big cut behind my ear. My mom almost banned me from chasing after that... hehe

Ty AJ!! I had to work this morning til 1 =( We started with Tom and Jerry's at about 9:30am and had a good game of 21 going on by 11:00!! Great day!!
hahahahahahahaha!! Pounded in the head by pea-sized hail?!? Nice! I guess you earned your storm chaser merit badge with that list. ;) lmao. Now I"m going to have to make a list...
Have a Merry Christkwanzhannukah. A green holiday here in Ohio but 47% is SNOW covered. Looks like another big storm next weekend and nothing but rain for Ohio again! Will it ever snow???
That same storm that affected some (or most?) of you also affected us here in MB the day before. Here are some pics I took on Highway 75 going South. There was a Blizzard Warning South of where I was.
Dang, that's a lot of pics. lol. Ok, the moment you've all been waiting for... not...
AJ has been:
Squished between his now-defunct chase vehicle and a barn while a EF-2 rated twister rolled on past in southern Kansas. The wind gusts were enough to push the Jeep up against the structure.
Cut badly behind the ear by a flying chunk of shed. It needed 12 stitches and a staple for good measure.
Hit in the head numerous times by random flying stuff, and had 2 concussions.
Had lightning strikes, downdrafts, and gustnadoes blow him every which way, as far as 20 feet in one case, landing on my butt. lol
A chunk of baseball-sized hail come through the windshield of the said dead Jeep, and dislocate fingers on his left hand.
Trees and branches of all shapes and sizes fall on his house, garage, car, and himself.
Watch as a chainsaw comes back to earth, impaling itself in a downed tree (from previously said EF-2, near Coffeyville.)
And finally... Does anyone remember in the movie "Twister," when the red Dodge is corepunching and a tricycle smashes into the windshield? Well, a similar thing happened to me, except it was my own Trek mountain bike, in that August 20th derecho event. It made a nice home in the grill of the dead Jeep.
I guess Mother Nature has a bone to pick with me too... lol!
wow aj mohter nature sure has abused you - i have been abused quite a few times also- and reed has probably been abused mroe times then me, you and caleb put together
haha. Yeah I bet... Reed powns Caleb, you and I when it comes to extreme weather situations! And half of the things on that list happened in one weekend! I think maybe I should be more relaxed in my chasing... or not :P
Niiiiice! I can't say that I've been under an overpass during a tornado, but waiting out a microburst under a car is probably a similar experience. hahaha.
That list is nothing compared to what my friends and I do on the weekends and such... ;)
your i can't beat that caleb- but thats the date we were scheduled to arrive in oklahoma city to spend the night- we decided to leave may 4th and after seeing the hotels and everything completely leveled when we arrived there-it looked like a warzone i most likely wouldn't be here so i guess
ok aj take care and believe me caleb- i don't think you can handle seeing an EF-4 or E-F5 i have seen what an EF-4 has done- for the 6 years i went out- the destruction i saw- was unbearable i let out and after seeing that-that was the only time i nealy teared up-i fealt helpless ya know i mean they can teach you all they want to at meteorology school or whenever you take a storm spotter quiz- but they cant teach you how to live with seeing the destruction of a tornado- and it was on april 2nd 2005- it registered as an F-4 tornado (would have been a EF-5 if they uised the new enhanced fujita scale) in Caruthersville, Missouri april 2nd 2005
Well since were all talking about incidents of Mother Nature giving us a taste of her..I have one story I can remember!
Summer 2005 or 2004, I was skateboarding at the local Skatepark during an overcast day. Out of nowhere, 80km/h+ wind's picked up, grabbed everyones decks, lifted it in the air and made it so that everyone had to chase it..Well I was one of those people. The only thing I didnt expect, was the winds to shift from East, to West, allowing the board to move the other direction and smack me in the face..After that my mom came and picked me up because the garbage bin by our house almost got tipped over from the winds, and she new I was at the skatepark.
:) I think it was a little Microburst without the Rain.

Click my name for an excellent weather website, ideal for people from Manitoba or Canada who want more accurate weather info. Others can submit their feedback to this blog.
Posted By MynameisBen | December 25, 2007 @ 12:28 AM #
I officially count my opinion out since im not from Canada.
But my opinion on the above site is not the highest, when i come online to look for the weather, i tended(i now have my own private weather service i use) to look for something that shyed away from the NWS/EC set up's/graphics/wordings. That site is basically transposed from EC itself. Plus the adavantage of the PWS is being able to get the information of what could happen with a shift of the system, weather it be timing, direction, or both.
Does anyone understand what i am saying?
Probs to whoever, because it is obvious they take the time to update it frequently, but its the least bit original.
Posted By MynameisBen | December 25, 2007 @ 12:31 AM #
Props*
And i do still look at NWS/SPC and model guidance, and most of the time i end of transposing what they both say. I.E: NWS calls for 2-4inches of snow and PWS calls for 4-8inches, so i expect 3-6 lol.
Hey Ben! I can see what you mean, but, being from Manitoba also, I check EC very regularly. Their forecast always seems to differ from them so its interesting to get both opinions. I give them props on the site also.
I don't mean to be rude though, but the one thing that I do not like is when comments meant to meerly advertise their site are posted here. If you want recognition, dont just say "come to my site! its great!", rather participate in the blog. I know you did that during severe weather season, but recently all I've seen from you overall were comments like the one above by "wildbill". I've checked your blog and seen hate messages and complaints towards you as result. If you dont want these please dont "spam".
Sorry once again if I'm being rude. I just don't wanna see your site be taken down due to hate. It truly is great, and can be respected if respect to this site is given back.
Note: In the first paragraph i meant ECs forecasts differ from Steinbach weathers forecast. :D
Posted By MynameisBen | December 25, 2007 @ 10:16 AM #
Jon after reading what you said, i choose to view his comments, and alot of them are hateful, so i tried to leave a non-asshole message, explaining why everyone is bitching at him for spamming...in the 3rd grade lingo, so if he dont get it i dunno, maybe i should try to type in brail?
Posted By MynameisBen | December 25, 2007 @ 10:35 AM #
Ohhh and i forgot to say Merry Christmas everyone!
AND.....Dont forget to tune in tonight on courttv/true tv for the premier of the Outlaw Chasers Documentary! I believe it is on at 10et, 9cdt,8mdt, and the west coast is usually screwed, but it would be 7wdt
I'm starting to become less and less impressed with this steinbach site now :(
I checked the Canadian weather forum I belong to, and to my suprise, there's "spam" there too advertising the site, by "Scottk". Scott, most of your comments there are the eact same message as I am about to post below:
"Take a visit down to www.steinbachweather.ca it has very accurate weather information for Manitoba, but the rest of Canada should see it too!! __________________ www.steinbachweather.ca"
I know these were meant merely for advertisment as they were only put in hot topic, or busy topics with lots of comments.
In conclusion, please stop. Nobody will take you serious for as long as you continue to spam.
Sorry Reed if this is not the kind of stuff you want in your blog. Please feel free to delete this comment and others like it if you wish.
Yeah, I have the Storms of 2007, as well as all the other years that have been done (they started in 2004). I've only seen 2007 and 2004 so far, but 2007 is by far the best tornado video I have in my pretty large collection. There is a ton of Reed's stuff on there, and he produced the section on the Manitoba event. Here's the website - I highly, highly recommend purchasing, since of course all the proceeds go to storm victim relief, but you get 2 hrs of awesome action, as well as all the weather set-up info for that day's event:
i didn't forget caleb just well after seen the caruthsville tornado first hand- i just don't like seeing people get hurt ya know and i'll try to worry less- but i can't promise it
Now those videos sound more interesting!! I want one now! :D It seems as if your laready long list keeps getting longer Caleb! Mine would be nowhere near as long...only things I might remember are:
-nearly having to leave due to the Flood of the Centure (my grandparents were evacuated from Morris, MB)
-geting hit with one random piece of nickle sized hail this Summer. There was none around other than this one that i saw! It was as if it was on purpose! :D
Thanks for the link Heidi, Wish I knew about this before Chirstmas, would have been an awesome present! Guess it will wait till my birthday! It is great the proceeds go to storm relief. Luckily I GET an hour to myself when my youngest goes to bed, and before my husband comes home from work to enjoy the Outlaw chasers uninterupted! Merry Christmas everyone!
HAHA! We didn't get much here in S/W Ontario.
LOL Sarnia got hit. My friend couldnt get out of her driveway LMAO
day 4 outlook saying maybe possible tornadic supercells in LA? anyone get a chance to look at models? what you think?

Yeah Reed almost got blown out of an over pass during the May 3 1999 F5 tornado!!!! I don't think Donny AJ or I could beat that!!!
Oh yeah when I was a baby my mom almost drove through a weak tornado Really gustnado. 30 sec after that she got in a ditch
I've been lifted 1 inch off the ground by a breah touch down on april 2 2006
Niiiiice! I can't say that I've been under an overpass during a tornado, but waiting out a microburst under a car is probably a similar experience. hahaha.

Also he's been within 50 yards of a tornado and lost his cell phone in the Elis co Ok tornado
that was supposed to be your right lol my bad
Whoa... Donny, you and I and Caleb are lucky. I guess we better count our lucky stars or whatever ;)
Well, it's been fun, but it is Christmas Eve, and I gotta go. Have a good one! See ya!
Yeah LOL the biggest tornado I've ever been in is an F3 LOL
ok aj take care and believe me caleb- i don't think you can handle seeing an EF-4 or E-F5 i have seen what an EF-4 has done- for the 6 years i went out- the destruction i saw- was unbearable i let out and after seeing that-that was the only time i nealy teared up-i fealt helpless ya know i mean they can teach you all they want to at meteorology school or whenever you take a storm spotter quiz- but they cant teach you how to live with seeing the destruction of a tornado- and it was on april 2nd 2005- it registered as an F-4 tornado (would have been a EF-5 if they uised the new enhanced fujita scale) in Caruthersville, Missouri april 2nd 2005
Yeah duh I don't wanna be in an EF-4 or 5 but beleive me I've been in a F3 in 2003 and then an F1 a year later
well you just becarefull whenever you do get the chance to chase

Jon
Note: In the first paragraph i meant ECs forecasts differ from Steinbach weathers forecast. :D
Jon after reading what you said, i choose to view his comments, and alot of them are hateful, so i tried to leave a non-asshole message, explaining why everyone is bitching at him for spamming...in the 3rd grade lingo, so if he dont get it i dunno, maybe i should try to type in brail?
haha
Merry christmas every one....

Jon
That's right..MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
you guys are really luck...in Canada here I don't get cour tv so I cant watch the show :(
Maybe somebody will put it on youtube like someone put storm chasers on there? :D
Jon

That video you showed us looks great Caleb!
Makes me want it....didn't Heidi buy it? or was that something else?
Jon I think it was tornado Intersept
just wanted to drop ina nd say merry christmas to all and hope y'all get what you really wanted
Donny last night forgot to add I've been hit with a peice of wood about 1" during that F-3 tornado. LOL

Enjoy the day, everyone! :D
Merry Christmas Everyone! May the pope be with you all!

Now those videos sound more interesting!! I want one now! :D
It seems as if your laready long list keeps getting longer Caleb!
yeah.... here is a video of it

I've got lifted up by a brief touch down on that day but not in that cell
Thanks for the link Heidi, Wish I knew about this before Chirstmas, would have been an awesome present! Guess it will wait till my birthday! It is great the proceeds go to storm relief. Luckily I GET an hour to myself when my youngest goes to bed, and before my husband comes home from work to enjoy the Outlaw chasers uninterupted! Merry Christmas everyone!
