Here is video of the ice storm in Norman, OK from Saturday afternoon and late Saturday night. The heaviest of the freezing rain is now occurring in central OK, with frequent lightning and thunder. Power outages are widespread, and numerous large trees are down. Over an inch of ice has accumulated in areas from Southwest OK through the OKC Metro. Stay tuned for a video update early tomorrow morning, when the damage will be apparent.
a massive tree just fel onto our house! I thought it was going ti come through the roof! Norman is going to look like a war zone by morning. Pictures soon!
yeah i just had to move my truck away from all the trees because they are starting to fall down! I keep seeing/hearing what might be a transformer or several freaking out off of 12th street and alameda...massive blue flashes are frequent! if my car wasnt iced over i would go check it out
Hey everyone. I didn't realise how cool ice storms could be. Yesterday here in the South East of England we had a serious storm with heavy winds and hail the size of marbles which is unusual here. I went out the back door to get our chickens in and got hit by freezing hail, wind and lightning over my head, it was intense!!!!!!!! Anyone else in England experience this, and does anyone know where to get satellite imagery or radar of this storm?

WOW! This ice storm going on is horrible! I know i said i love ice storms, and i still do, but i do feel sorry for all of you folks down in Oklahoma that are dealing with this massive ice storm and all the damage it's leaving behind. I hope all of you survive this storm, stay safe, and take care. Just bitter cold up here in Minnesota, 3 mornings in a row now with lows down into the minus 20s over parts of the state!

Reed it really looks bad down your way. We did get some freezing rain but nothing like you. We are supposed to get more freezing rain - up to 1 inch - later this afternoon and evening. Sure hope you don't have too many problems :(
HOLY COW!!!! =-O I think it was Wes last night that said there were branches all over the place where he usually parks his Jeep, and I was thinking "Whoa, what about these guys vehicles/houses..." And now THIS?! AAAAAAAA!!!!!!! =-O (And there was no apostrophe on the "s" in "guys" because that is considered a "tag" and so it won't post with it there! :D)
Oh, and I just posted this in the last thread by mistake:
There is a patch of precip just on the sw side of OKC right now in the 55-60 DBZ range!!!!!!! I saved it!
So far we've had about 0.75" of rain, and right now we are just outside this big band that's draped across the southern plains. It's all happening about a county to our north and to our west. Sad ...
I'm with Tim on this one... We get em up here in Winnipeg at least once a year and it makes for a bad drive, but what you guys are getting is really dangerous.
Be careful and don't use a barbecue to heat your house. CO poisoning related deaths happen all the time when the power goes out. Some people just don't know any better.
Also, good luck with the clean up.

Reed, We got a real then layer of ice here . Looks like southern Oklahoma got lucky this time. We still have nightmares of the Ice storm of 2000, took me three weeks to get power back then.
Reed - videos are blocked here at school so I can't show the kids. Be sure to post some photos. Glad you are safe - hope you power is still on.

I willl take our 38 degrees and light rain anyday over that mess. I hope all is well or at least as well as it can be. Had my fair share of ice storms in Ohio the last couple of years and they are just as pretty as they are dangerous. Good Luck and stay safe.
If you need pictures Reed, just let me know. Norman looks like a war zone right now and alot of streets are closed are should be closed. I finally got power back an hour ago. I was getting pretty cold. There is a solid half inch of ice out there and the trees keep coming down, one after another.
thats crazy guys! good luck with your house reed hope the damage isnt to bad! more then 160.000 without power...thats gonna take a while to fix, I think. looks like there is more winter weather on the way.
This is intense. I was just standing outside and saw half a tree fall onto a house. Then another very large branch fell from another tree. This is better than a good lightning show, but the damage from this be many millions of dollars. I never thought I would see so much destruction in my life.
most roads have large limbs blocking at least 1 of the lanes. I was driving and a large limb fell into the lane next to me, i'm pretty lucky, it would have done pretty extensive damage to my car.
I am done driving around. It is too dangerous to drive with the limbs fallen. Some limbs i have seen I would bet are over 1000 pounds, they are massive. Just about every minute I hear another branch come down. We will run out of branches if it continues at this rate. As bad as this storm is, it could be 100 times worse if the ground temps were lower and the air temp was not about to go up. This storm could have completely shut down the state for most of the week.
Story Highlights: *NEW: Oklahoma, Missouri customers without power now half a million*
*Weather now blamed for 13 deaths
*Warnings, freezing rain advisories, watches from Texas to New Hampshire
*Roads and runways coated with dangerous, often deadly ice
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (AP) - Roads were treacherous Monday from the Plains into parts of the Northeast as a storm spread a coating of ice and freezing rain that blacked out more than a half-million homes and businesses. At least 13 traffic deaths were linked to icy roads.
Winter weather warnings and advisories were posted along a cold front that stretched from Texas to New Hampshire. The wintry weather was expected to continue through midweek
The winter-like weather prompted a state of emergency for the entire state of Oklahoma, said Michelann Ooten, spokeswoman for the state Department of Emergency Management. Fifty industrial generators and three truckloads of bottled water were to be shipped to blacked-out areas. Missouri had declared an emergency on Sunday and put the National Guard on alert.
Oklahoma utilities said some 400,000 customers were blacked out as power lines snapped under the weight of ice and falling tree branches, and utilities in Missouri said more than 100,000 homes and business had no power there. Roughly 11,000 were blacked out in southern Illinois.
The sound of branches snapping echoed through Oklahoma City neighborhoods.
"You can hear them falling everywhere," Lonnie Compton said Monday as he shoveled ice off his driveway.
Ice was as much as an inch thick on tree limbs and power lines in parts of Missouri.
Schools across Oklahoma were closed and some hospitals were relying on backup power generators.
Tulsa International Airport had no power and halted flight operations, and most morning flights at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City were canceled because of icy runways.
Greyhound Bus service was disrupted, stranding passengers, some of whom spent the night in a shelter in a church in downtown Tulsa. They were joined by some local residents who had no heat.
There was no way to estimate when power might be restored, said Oklahoma Gas & Electric spokesman Gil Broyles.
"This is a big one, we've got a massive situation here and it's probably going to be a week to 10 days before we get power on to everybody," said Ed Bettinger, a spokesman for Public Service Company. "It looks like a war zone."
The Oklahoma City suburb of Jones, a town of 2,500 people, had very low water pressure because there was no electricity to run well pumps, and firefighters said an early morning fire destroyed most of the local high school.
The icy weather stretched into the Northeast, where many schools across upstate New York were closed or started late because of icy roads.
On ice-covered Interstate 40 west of Okemah, Oklahoma, four people died in "one huge cluster of an accident" that involved 11 vehicles, said Highway Patrol Trooper Betsey Randolph.
Eight other people also died on icy Oklahoma roads, and Missouri had one death on a slippery highway. In addition, a transient died of hypothermia in Oklahoma City, the state medical examiner's office said
That's crazy you guys!!! All of you getting hit by this please stay safe out there!

What a storm. Devastating is the only word to describe the situation around the OU campus with all the mature trees that have come down. Almost every last tree around the dorm towers appeared to be down when I drove through earlier.
I don't know if I've ever seen anything as absurd as OU declaring finals on for tomorrow. This storm has absolutely crippled Norman with very widespread power outages and some nearly impassable roads, and I highly doubt the situation will be much better in the morning. It's funny, they apparently have power on campus so they send out the e-mail telling us all that finals will continue as planned, apparently not realizing that most students probably won't even get it unless they come up to campus for a connection! (My apartment has been without power since 5 AM, I'm in the NWC now). I guess I might be a bit biased, though, since I have an 8 am dynamics final that I haven't even thought about yet thanks to this storm.
I understand OU needs to get finals over with, but have they looked outside. That ice is going be falling off everything all over campus tomorrow. Not to mention branches that are still hanging and are ready to fall. I dont think there is anyway they will have the campus ready for us tomorrow. I hope they get sued for it too. I have had power since 9 after losing it at 3 am and i feel quite lucky to have it. The power has flickered alot though. OGE system watch page still shows 26,000 in Norman without power. I cant wait till have to go across campus to my final tomorrow in what will likely be heavy rain and falling ice chunks.

Well we are getting pouring rain here now that is going to ice everything up. It appears by morning we could have up to an inch of ice on everything. Bet I won't have to work too hard tomorrow on scooping the driveway :) Just hope we don't loose power like so many are in OU and MO. Hope everyone is doing ok down there.... :)
Hey guys! I'm getting a light rain, but it's quickly turning into freezing rain. Be careful if you have to drive anywhere in Kansas or Oklahoma! Monte, it looks like you will get the absolute worst of it :( My school district has the "school cancellation" button primed and ready for tomorrow morning, just in case.
I'll do my best to report the situation in SW Kansas. And if you haven't already, buy a generator. lol.
