Ice Storm Aftermath

Here are some pictures of the damaged caused by the ice storm in Norman, OK, where we received over 1 inch of ice accumulation.  A large tree fell on our house last night, which has cut our power for an indefinite period of time.  Since there are power lines down in our backyard, it will likely be a few days before power is restored!  I'm also trying to upload the video using our Cingular data card, so it may take awhile before that is posted.

Holy cow!!! Those pictures are amazing and dramatic. Excellent work Reed!!! As for us here we are in for a nice shot at some heavy rain in the next hour or so as a huge, strong patch of rain and storms moves our way. I'll keep updating my blog with video, pics, and forecasts

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Cnote | December 10, 2007 @ 5:57 PM #

Wow! That looked really intense. Tomorrow mich. is going to get pounded by the system. Hopefully it won't be that bad.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 10, 2007 @ 5:59 PM #

haha. Thanks Donny.;) Michael O, we might have a problem out here in the SW part... there could be significant damage out here... I'll be ready to report if the time comes.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By smt | December 10, 2007 @ 6:14 PM #

WOW!!! Reed! Whose car is that? Poor Rick-his greenhouse will never be the same. It looks like a war zone. We are supposed to get some ice here tomorrow in Michigan - but I have never seen ice like that here. Try to stay warm - probably no power for a few days at least. OK is all over the news - wait till they see your photos.

Cool AJ yeah that sounds awesome. Yeah dude report back.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 10, 2007 @ 6:21 PM #

Hopefully it won't be another January ice storm... that one sucked. Maybe it'll be just bad enough for my school to cancel tomorrow... :D hehe. I have plenty of ramen noodles and hot chocolate to keep me alive. lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 10, 2007 @ 6:38 PM #

lets hope not aj- you know- the schoolboard would be stupid not to cancel school- it's not worth taking the risk- even the tinyist amount of ice can be deadly

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 10, 2007 @ 6:39 PM #

haha. We'll see Donny... the local schoolboard has had a lack of common sense before, so we'll see this time...

Now it's starting to freeze before it hits the ground...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 10, 2007 @ 6:45 PM #

lol aj like i said a few posts ago- these mfers here in ark. didn't shut down school when there was more the n 1.5 inchs of ice and more then a foot of snow on the ground

Yeah, AJ, thanks for taking care of the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA for me. Good man.

I don't see any foul language... just an acronym. ;) hehe. Your welcome Heidi. lol.

If buses can't drive one the roads, then school will definitely be cancelled. It's unpredictable at best.

I'm out for dinner, be back later!

I like the pictures where on both sides of the street the branches are bent over-looks kinda cool. Looks like things are heading our way-Norther IL under a Ice Storm Warning! First time in a long, long, long time I've heard them issue that!! Nice pictures Reed! Hope you own a generator! We had to use ours last weekend when we were without power for over 12 hours-looks like you are gonna need one for a heck of a lot longer than that!!!!!!!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By JY | December 10, 2007 @ 8:00 PM #

I just spoke with Reed. Rick (one of his roomates) was trying to call the power company about downed power lines in their backyard. It will be at least a week, as the local news is reporting, for power to get restored.

Reed did anything get damaged in your house? I can remerbere the ice storm of 2003 the roads were so slick i slipped on them when I walked on it! a small tree fell on MY BED ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there was mud every were. My friend only had 1 tub of warm water!

IF ANY ONE DIDN'T SEE MY VIDEO FROM YESTERDAY HERE IT IS.... but I don't mean to be rude....

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By smt | December 10, 2007 @ 8:11 PM #

Great video Reed - it seems so silent in the aftermath - no community noise, no cars, no wind, no birds, etc. It is sad to see the pretty old trees just collapsing.
About your power - do you still have water? Probably should stay put and try to build a fire in the fireplace...you have lots of wood! You could even hang a pot over the coals and cook something up?
Hope that isn't headed here - but I do have a generator that will run the furnace. If you have a chance, email me some photos for the kids to see tomorrow. School blocks utube, but I will email the techies and ask to unblock for tomorrow. CNN says that all of Norman is out of power, but say nothing about the university.

Mrs. Timmer, I wish you were my teacher! lol. That'd be an awesome way to start off the class, with "Come see what my son does for a living..." lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Monty M - Hutch, KS | December 10, 2007 @ 9:06 PM #

Wow excellent pictures Reed. We are getting some of the same stuff now in Hutchinson. Even lightening and thunder, but it's freezing as soon as it hits the ground. I will try and get some pictures in the morning. we already have over 1/2 inch of rain/freezing rain and it's still pouring :(

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 10, 2007 @ 9:09 PM #

Aww, I didn't get any thunder Monte :( Oh well... I got a mix of freezing rain and ice pellets, so it won't be pleasant driving tomorrow.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By JY | December 10, 2007 @ 9:43 PM #

SMT-

Reed has water, just no electricity! I think he is at a bonfire right now. Temperatures in Norman are above freezing, but there is another chance for freezing rain tomorrow night.

The other story for today, of course not has impressive, Subtropical Storm Olga!!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By jeri | December 10, 2007 @ 9:49 PM #

Basically from what I remember of the ice storm that hit around Lexington, KY a few years ago(about inch and a half to two inches of ice). The freaky thing was that I lived in the next county south, and the county line was the dividing point(hence it only rained harmlessly south and east of Lexington). Most people were out of power for a few weeks, and if I remember right, there were even some people who didn't get electricity reconnected until a month and a half later.

Good luck and watch out for the trees failing, as you found out with your house and the person's car. Even if it seems the ice is melting off the trees, the branches can still fall to cause damage and even hurt people.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By smt | December 10, 2007 @ 9:57 PM #

Thanks JY!!! Those boys need their water if you know what I mean. I cannot imagine a total lack of "facilities". EEEWWWW.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Jim in New Ulm,MN | December 10, 2007 @ 10:18 PM #

WOW, Reed.
Thats some serious ice damage. Didn`t you have an ice storm last year to ? No thanks, been there, done that, been quite a few years since I really hope its many more before it happens again. I prefer snow thank you.

Not that you really get choice in the matter, it just sucks that mother nature can cause so much damage some times.

Hope you can get some power back on soon, makes life really difficult when you get so use to having it.

Stay safe, don`t let any trees fall on you while shooting more video.

Regards,
Jim

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Jon | December 10, 2007 @ 10:27 PM #

Wow....that was a pretty bad Ice Storm from what I see!

..but it was nothing compared to what Eastern Ontario, Southern Quebec, and the Canadian Maritimes got back in January 1998......over 5 INCHES of ice fell then! Can you imagine that? That would totally cripple the Oklahoma City area like what happened in Montreal almost 10 years ago!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Dayna | December 10, 2007 @ 10:36 PM #

Reed,
Hang a POT OVER THE COALS. I agree with smt's advice. It will be like "Survivor Man: Norman, Oklahoma". Those pictures are incredible! I saw a reporter from the Chicago news, he was broadcasting from Norman, I looked to see if he was using any of your footage. Do you think the storm is on it's way to Chicago? Keep me posted, I'll get some photos if I am able to leave work early.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Wes | December 10, 2007 @ 10:49 PM #

This storm is incredible. I have been studying for a few hours and went back outside and more branches have fallen after dark but I do believe it is starting to melt a little. If we pick up more freezing rain tomorrow night along with gusty winds, this could get worse.

Click my name to check out the photos I took near OU campus of the past few days.

Wow! Looks like our icestorm in 1998 in the region of Montréal! 105 mm of ice fell between the january 6 and 10 1998. In the worst, approximately 3 000 000 people were out of power. It tooks in average 2 weeks to regain electricity and for some, more than a month! At this time, the temperature was far under the Zero degre celsius and many died because of that.

Good luck guys, we had one with almost an inch of accum here in NC in 2002. Looks as bad if not worse than ours.

It was pretty crazy to sit up all night and listen to trees break and watch the night sky light up green and blue with exploding transformers. We were out of power for over a week. Hope you guys don't have to go that long. It gets really old really fast.

If anyone's interested, there's one and a quarter inch hail falling AT 8 AM in west-central Texas near Colorado City at the tail of this massive storm.

I'm near Des Moines. In my life I have never seen worse weather.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Zack | December 11, 2007 @ 9:21 AM #

A tree fell on Reeds house!!?!! I hope your ok, and nice video by the way:) Here in South OKC, I just got my power back on! It was out all day yesterday and part of this morning. All of my bradford pear trees are destroyed, and this cotton wood tree is dropping massive branches! I'm glad it's 34 degrees with plain rain.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 11, 2007 @ 9:32 AM #

I'd like to see a report from someone out of Wichita right now. That has to be at least as bad or worse than the OKC area. There is a HUGE swath of yellow to dark red DBZ on GR3. It looks like it *might* be just rain, if we can believe the reported temp (32), but just north of there and up toward Topeka it IS freezing. WHOA!

... Umm, yeah, I just looked at Des Moines... whoa again!

Still foggy here...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Monty M - Hutch, KS | December 11, 2007 @ 9:47 AM #

Well lots of trees down and power outages here in Hutchinson. We had over 3 inches of freezing rain overnight but it's stayed warm enough where the roads aren't too bad except for the large branches down. I will take some pictures this afternoon but South Central Kansas is virtually shut down due to the ice storm. We even had lots of lightening and thunder last night. It appears it's going to rain until late this afternoon then get colder. I would imagine we will have quite a bit more tree damage if it gets a little colder. Several large branches down in my yard but thank goodness they've missed my house. The whole west side of town is without power but I'm working so I can send this out. Hope everyone is warm and safe.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Wes | December 11, 2007 @ 9:50 AM #

Power is still out for most of Norman. I spent the night in Sarkey Energy Center working on a paper. I needed power and heat, and campus is the only place with either. This is gonna be one long finals week. Thanks goodness I dont have that many finals.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 11, 2007 @ 9:56 AM #

Monty, is the rain freezing there right now, or is it plain rain. It looks like the heaviest of this current heavy, heavy precip is going to miss you just off to the east, but that's probably not a lot of consolation, when it's noted that you're still going to get/are getting some moderate precip there. This is crazy!

Be careful everyone. And Reed, I get really nervous when I see you guys walking under tree branches that are drooping!!! =-O ;)

Hey guys bad news for KC. We are expected to see another 6-8 hours of rain. We have about half and inch now with another half an inch to 3/4 on the way. We haved stay below freezing all day and its only expected to drop. Problem is, winds are picking up and are expected to gusts close to 20mph later today. We have already had some large limbs fall with TONS of trees awaiting their deaths. I think KC is going to get caught off guard with this second round. The rush hour is when it is expected to be heaviest. Areas north of KC are getting it real bad. I've heard that the power is out and the water has been shut off in some areas. I will keep updating with a video around noon and another of the aftermath later tonight and tomorrow if we don't have school.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By andy | December 11, 2007 @ 11:29 AM #

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Monty M - Hutch, KS | December 11, 2007 @ 11:30 AM #

Heidi it's really rain and the temperature is 32 degree's right now. Now the wind is starting to blow and the wind chill will be dropping down to around 27 degrees so that could make it worse especially if the wind gets to going. The small tree's for the most part have lots of branches down. But larger trees seem to be holding up except in a few area's of town. Just hope it doesn't get colder because it's still raining.... :(

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 11, 2007 @ 12:10 PM #

This is a disaster. I am going to do some digging to see when the last time an ice storm of this scope and severity occurred ... if ever.

Nice pics Reed. Those poor drooping trees. Are they ever going to snap back into shape? They look like Dr. Seuss trees. We've been going through sleet, snow and rain in a.m. and p.m. today in upper midwest. Are temps going to fall?

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Don G. | December 11, 2007 @ 2:53 PM #

Crazy situation as this is definitely one for the record books. There's always a silver lining, though, as it's really fortunate the temperature rose above freezing before today's rain, an especially that there weren't 30mph winds to go along with this storm...if that had happened there would pretty much be no trees left at all.

I saw one of Reed's roommates at lunch today, apparently they're trying to contact their landlord (he lives in Hawaii, and I'm sure is especially enjoying the warm weather right now, LOL). The latest statistics from the electric companies here in Oklahoma suggests that approximately 50% of the state's population is currently without power...no wonder they're saying this is the largest outage in state history!

Also talked to a friend of mine who lives in Tulsa yesterday, he said his parents house got smashed by a huge tree about 9 am and has a gaping hole in it. This of course was just before they got drilled by 3 hours of heavy thunderstorms with freezing rain, so they had to get out of there in a hurry and call the insurance company!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Matt | December 11, 2007 @ 2:55 PM #

And the thing is im about to get hit with the same storm system as Reed did this afternoon and into tomorrow.

Here are a couple of early pictures. Haven't had much time to take them yet. It's stopped raining now and just misting but the wind is starting to come out of the north so I hope the tree's spare my garage. We still don't have power on most of the west side of town. Went out at 11:30 p.m. last night :( Boring without electricity. Sending this from work. Hope everyone stays safe :)

Hey! Hope everyone's doing okay today! I was pretty pissed off this morning, because it seemed like all but 2 school districts in the state of Kansas closed schools... and mine happened to be one of the 2. Grr.... also, I was kind of disappointed in our part of the storm. We had rain/sleet/snow from about 11 to 2:30 this afternoon, and then just cold, windy, with no precip. Pics will be up tonite though... nothing special...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 7:04 PM #

Here's pics from about twenty minutes ago... jut some thick cloud cover. The temp is a blistering 27 degrees, with a wind chill of 6. What little amount of rain/slush we got today is now starting to freeze... I know because I almost fell on my butt a couple of times while taking pictures. lol.

We are still without power at my house... trying to stay warm. Finals continue however, and I am hauling up in the library to study. I have internet, and it's warm here too!

Looks like models are showing a significant snow storm now for central Oklahoma starting Friday. NWS has confirmed. Here we go again!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 11, 2007 @ 7:16 PM #

well also keep safe dave- and least its snow and not ice- here comes round 2- time for the air masses to clash- again lol

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 7:23 PM #

Another one? I just pulled up the forecast... looks like my area might get some actual snow this time, during late Thursday night.

Stay safe guys! Make a bonfire or three! lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Reed | December 11, 2007 @ 8:16 PM #

I couldn't handle it anymore! Broke down and got a hotel 20 miles south of Norman! haha!

The same area of Oklahoma could be in for a massive snowstorm Friday night into Saturday...if the 12z GFS verifies.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 8:41 PM #

My grandma just called... she lives about 10 miles SE of Greensburg. On May 4th, her place didn't get a scratch! But she was without power for a day, but she bought a generator, and everything's peachy now.

Sometimes, you wonder if Mother Nature is simply out to get you... lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By smt | December 11, 2007 @ 8:52 PM #

I am glad you are in a warm place finally! I bet it feels good to be there - too bad you couldn't be Survivorman Norman as Dayna said.
Our ice here was nothing - now it is just cold.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By MynameisBen | December 11, 2007 @ 8:57 PM #

I work for a packaging and shipping company, and we had several people wanting to send care packages to Norman, OKC, and Tulsa today. We contacted Fed Ex Express, and they said the roadways are fine down there. So we are able to ship supplies into you guys.

One gentleman, said his kids who he was overnighting his package to told him, they couldn't get out of there house initially because of ice build up, and once they did get out and to a store. There is NOTHING left at the stores. Apparently in the city of Tulsa, there is not ONE SINGLE D battery left for sale, Or even the least bit non Perishable food.

Reed if you are running low on supplies or need anything that is deffinitly not available. You can contact me at 309-360-7489, with a small list of things you will need, and i'll purchase them and pack them, and get them overnighted, as fed ex has said they are completly on schedule, and still guaranteeing overnights, 2day, and three day plans. All you will need if you do contact me, is a list of things you need, a street address to ship to, and also a Credit/Debit card, or some form of payment.

I do agree, this ice storm is epic proportions for this far south.

We officially recieved .5 inches of ice Saturday into Sunday, and then a .15-.25 glazing on elevated Surfaces lastnite, before changing to rain...Originally they had taken the freezing precip out of the forecast for tonite, but they have since issued a freezing rain advisory, for another .15-.25 inches of ice overnight, along with black ice, cause by water on the roadway beginning to freeze.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By ez | December 11, 2007 @ 9:04 PM #

a special weather statement from nws says up to 4 inches as system rolls in from west on friday night and should be a relatively short snow storm but central ok could have some decent accumulations

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 11, 2007 @ 9:30 PM #

All I can do is hope this baby swings a little further south!!! Unfortunately, I've had to hope that a lot this year, and it just hasn't happened...

But if it did... That would be awesome! The most snow I've ever seen is three inches...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 9:32 PM #

Connor, come up to KS sometime, we'll show you snow. lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 11, 2007 @ 9:44 PM #

AJ believe me, I would if I could haha

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 9:44 PM #

Better yet, let's take a trip to Brady's house, and you'll get a taste of snow, and snowmobiles. haha.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 11, 2007 @ 10:13 PM #

Speaking of Brady, where the heck?? :-/

Donny, there was a TVS briefly just north of you a little bit ago near Vilonia, and another one north of Searcy right now! - A notch in the gust front! :D

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 11, 2007 @ 10:14 PM #

Actually, now that I back out and have a wider look at that, the line seems to be bowing out a bit, and those TVS are at the end of the line.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 11, 2007 @ 10:30 PM #

i know heidi i filmed it with my camcorder- i didn't see any visible rotation- there was close to 40 mph winds here and heavy rain- rain felt so hard it seemed like hail- but it wasn't and i got drenched in the process lol ohh and more fun and games this weekend with snow here !!!!!!!!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 10:35 PM #

Cool deal Donny! We're starving out here, we'd like to see some video...:P lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 11, 2007 @ 10:39 PM #

lol aj i need to convert the camcorder film into a dvd first (and since i don't have one of those conversion kits) i need to find someone who does) then copy the dvd into my videos and then we will talk about that lol- ohh didn't you see the video i made a few nights ago with the storm comming into arkansas with that lightning

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 11, 2007 @ 10:47 PM #

No I didn't... :( Oh well, another time. I'm heading out for the nite, see ya later! Stay warm Reed and gang!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 11, 2007 @ 11:04 PM #

AJ I'm all for that! But yeah, where is Brady? Usually he'd be on here , buzzed, and entertaining us all!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Brady MN | December 11, 2007 @ 11:25 PM #

Hey Folks!! Sorry I'm late!! Geez, Can't go a day without me?? hehe I promise I won't pull a Joe Surfer on ya!! That I ce storm looks familiar!! I remeber on a few years back that I think I've mentioned a time or ten!! hehe How's everyone handling it??

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 11, 2007 @ 11:30 PM #

Brady!! You made me miss Joe again :(

So can anyone tell me what Critical Thickness is?

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Brady MN | December 11, 2007 @ 11:36 PM #

oh no!! looks like things might warm up a lil hear in the next few days!! Highs near 30f!! I don't want all this wonderful snow to go anywhere!! We're probably the only ones in the country with decent weather!! Too early for slop and slush!!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 11, 2007 @ 11:38 PM #

conner if it is what i think it is- its - its where your rain snow line its either that that or the thickness in the clouds/cold air that determines if the winter precip is snow sleet or freezing rain-to tired to remember

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Reed | December 12, 2007 @ 12:10 AM #

Thanks a lot Ben!! We'll definitely be fine down here...there is a McDonald's within walking distance so we're dominating.

Glad to have you back Brady!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Brady MN | December 12, 2007 @ 12:18 AM #

TY!! I'm glad to be back!! Work sux!! One more day tomorrow, then I have a few off!! I kinda figured you were doing fine Reed when I heard you were in a hotel!! That's usually the good life!! hehe

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By tim MN | December 12, 2007 @ 1:02 AM #

Brady, i doubt will loose all of our snow up here anytime soon, even if temps touch the 30 degree mark.. I'm ready for the warmer temps, perhaps the storm track will shift closer to us in the next 1 to 2 weeks??

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Darrin | December 12, 2007 @ 1:10 AM #

Heidi

What about last year's (in January) as far as ice storms go?

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Dick M | December 12, 2007 @ 3:03 AM #

I can't believe a tree landed in your house. Those pics and video are incredible. Hope you guys are doing well and have a warm place to sleep and eat. We dodged a bullet up here, although it accumulated fairly well yesterday afternoon, nothing like you guys had.

Only 78 days till March 1st.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Karen Coker | December 12, 2007 @ 9:46 AM #

My gosh! Those are some very dramatic photos!!!but im glad that the ice didnt come down as far as McAlester! the 1st ice storm in 2000 i think, we were out of electricity for 19 days, and last years we were out for 14 days. So, so far so good! no ice for me!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 12, 2007 @ 10:49 AM #

Yeah Darrin ... I had this past January's storm in mind when I said I wanted to look at the last time an ice storm of this magnitude occurred. I was remembering that one as not being quite as dramatic, since it didn't hit central OK quite so much. I did just take another look at that storm, specifically, and while that one certainly was crippling, it was mostly in eastern OK, and missed the more densely populated center of the state. I guess OKC got mostly sleet out of that one, or it probably would have been similar to this one.

So far, too, it seems like there might be lot more power outages with this storm. The Jan. storm had the most power outages in MO/IL and the eastern Great Lakes region, as far as I've been able to determine. There were a lot more deaths as a result of the Jan. storm, however (87 is what I'm finding).

I don't know ... I guess when I wrote that, it was looking like Kansas City was really going to get hit hard, and practically everywhere between OKC and Chicago was going to be without power! It's bad enough as it is, with reports of 1,000,000 without power right now, 600,000+ in OK alone. Still, I am guessing everyone involved is now glad that this one didn't turn out to be *as bad* as it could have been. It seemed like you OK guys had a shift there at one point, where you suddenly felt that this was no longer fun! - I guess massive, prolonged power-outages can do that!

It will be interesting to see what the final damage tally is for this one, and to see how it ranks historically. ... Now I want to take a look at that Canadian/New England ice storm from 1998 (I believe that was when it was?). I remember the photos from that one!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 11:31 AM #

it'll probably be ranked in the top storms this year- behind greensburg and then historically top 10 this century heidi- and good morning to everyone and glad to see your safe reed and everyone here in oklahoma

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By tim jacobs | December 12, 2007 @ 11:59 AM #

Hey guys, hows everyone??
Glad to hear your ok Reed.... deffinetly wasnt nice out there....
This storm has been hitting all the headlines here..... seen loads of reports for it over the past 2 days.....
Also, great pictures Reed and sorry to hear about the tree landing on your house....

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By gerb131 | December 12, 2007 @ 12:52 PM #

Craziness is what it looks like. I know we had a bad ice storm in Ohio 4 years ago and with all the weird noises with limbs breaking and stuff creaking it can be weird.
Hope you guys come through it ok, or have good insurance adjusters, they will be busy.
Looking like a snow event of the weekend for us here in Ohio? I hope it was 68 degrees yesterday and rained overnight. We shall see.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Reed | December 12, 2007 @ 3:48 PM #

Gov Brad Henry live on CNN! The feed is also available on their website.

Most houses in our neighborhood have power now, with the exception of ours of course! I examined the roof today and there is some serious damage where the large tree struck the house. It's a good thing we rent.

Now it looks like we could get 6-12 inches of snow on Friday night into Saturday! That would not be good if power is not restored.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 4:01 PM #

Due to my sunny dissposition on things- there is one thing to me thankfull for reed- its better that its snow- and not ice

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Cors | December 12, 2007 @ 4:01 PM #

thx for the updates reed!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 5:38 PM #

Hey guys! Hope everyone's weathering it ok out there. I agree with Donny, on that it's better that this nezt round of stuff coming in Thursday nite will be mostly snow. And Dick M. is also right; Kansas dodged the bullet, and only got grazed. I guess it's our turn tomorrow nite...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 12, 2007 @ 6:14 PM #

Reed, I think this possible snow storm calls for a new blog.

I'm still hoping DFW gets in on the action!

In other news, we had a bomb threat in school today... but they didn't even let us go home...wtf?

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 6:16 PM #

i know why they wouldnt conner it's because they don't know who made it- and everyone's a suspect- and DFW it's going to be a close call

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 6:17 PM #

haha. Connor, I would say that they think it's better if they keep you guys in school to get blown up, rather then let you out and get blown up. It's weird...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 12, 2007 @ 6:19 PM #

They usually let us out for bombs, like at another school last year. They lock us in if someone has a gun. Which happened to us earlier this year.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Reed | December 12, 2007 @ 6:26 PM #

Connor: We used to get bomb threats all the time when I was in high school. The first few they let us out, then they locked us all in the gym every time. Not fun. Thankfully they were only threats!

The snowstorm definitely calls for a new blog post. I'll be adding a big forecast entry after 00z models come out (~9:30 pm cst). I'll actually be in Mobile, AL for this one...I delayed the trip one week so I could experience the ice storm! Dave will be documenting the snow event and will post pictures and video if necessary.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 6:29 PM #

Cool deal Reed, we'll be looking forward to it!

I guess different schools have different rules... our school locks us in for almost everything except a natural gas leak... which I find highly doubtable because everything in our school runs off of electricity!...

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Connor | December 12, 2007 @ 6:32 PM #

Sounds good Reed!

LOL Family Guy is on!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By justin | December 12, 2007 @ 6:54 PM #

woo hoo were gunna get the snow storm tommarow anywhere from 1-6 in cuz each news station sayin diffrent amounts and we had a bomb threat to we went outside but after they checked we have to go bac in school. and another chance of snow for me on sat and sunday

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By caleb | December 12, 2007 @ 6:59 PM #

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 12, 2007 @ 8:43 PM #

Okay. Everyone look up there at what Caleb just wrote and that replace the actual words with me saying LOOK AT THE 18Z SATURDAY-0Z SUNDAY WRF!!!!!!! ... Okay, I can't hold it ... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT LOOKS LIKE ARKANSOTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Yeah, okay now everyone say it: IT'S 3 days out! BUT I CAN'T HELP IT!!!!!!!!!)

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | December 12, 2007 @ 8:54 PM #

arkansota? AY, hmmmm.. well i see Mr. Jim Cantore is up in the Northeast U.S., near Boston reporting live for the big snow event that's suppose to hit that area Tomorrow/Tomorrow Night.. Ok back at looking at Stephanie Abrams do her thing on TWC.. the weather is pretty boring up here in Minnesota, sorry i have nothing else to say-lol. Although there's a pretty vigorous clipper zipping in from the NW later Tonight/Thursday

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 9:14 PM #

From the looks of all the previous posts, Old Man Winter is getting busy now. lol. And yes Tim, Stephanie Abrams makes watching TWC better ;)

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 9:21 PM #

wow heidi tell us what yuo really think to deary lol

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 9:30 PM #

Oh come on Donny! I have a DVR unit, and I've caught TWC specials where Stephanie Abrams is in half-pucker. lol. Seriously... I can't be the only one that's noticed that. Course, being a teenage male helps too... :P hehe.

Okay, back on topic... lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By tim Duluth, MN | December 12, 2007 @ 9:35 PM #

lol yea old man Winter is alive and well that's for sure, nice to see you guys down South get some winter weather, sad to see all the damage and deaths it's leaving behind though, that's awful! lol agree with it making TWC better to watch.. i'll stop now..

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 9:42 PM #

lol aj then howabout send it to you in mail and pay ya to have it converted lol

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 9:46 PM #

hahahahaha... I even think there's a website dedicated to those things, but we'll leave that for your own exploration ;) So, anyways, how about this new storm system, anything new with it? lol.

It's hard to get me back on topic... hehe.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 10:05 PM #

well unfortunantly- what i have say with this weekends storm aj- this space will not provide enough room- so i'll just put it like this- friday- snow in oklahoma and kansas saturday- a severe weather event possible in alabama mississippi goergia and louisiana and snow in arkansas kentucky southeastern missouri and poitns northeast- then sunday-we get a blizzard in new york and pennsylvania and points northeast- and in parts of pennsylvania and new york- close to 2 feet of snow possible

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Heidi | December 12, 2007 @ 10:12 PM #

(drumming her fingers impatiently...) It's not 9:30 yet. COME ON GFS!!!!!!!!

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 10:20 PM #

lol patience heidi

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 10:26 PM #

I learned long ago that if I wanted to be a successful storm chaser, one must have a certain degree of patience. I'm still working on it... lol.

Dang, sounds like a lot on the weather plate this weekend Donny! Maybe I can get something out of the deal, and have some awesome pics for you guys on here... hehe.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 10:32 PM #

lol lets hope so aj- and since my area of arkasnas will get some snow- i'll just have to make a little video wont i

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 10:37 PM #

:D That would be appreciated yes. lol.

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 10:43 PM #

not to self though- use my cell phone this time lol

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By AJ | December 12, 2007 @ 10:47 PM #

haha. Yeah, that might help. I know that one certainly comes in handy when you need to tell your grandma that a monster wedge is forming close to her house. (she lives near Greensburg... not a scratch on her house!)

Ice Storm Aftermath Comment Posted By Donny | December 12, 2007 @ 10:56 PM #

wow thats amazing no other way to put it especially when the wedge was 1.7 miles wide
