A strong, vertically-stacked low pressure system is drifting southward across western Scandinavia, with 50-70 mph northerly winds to the west of the cyclone across the entire North Sea.   These persistent northerlies are "piling-up" water along the western and southern boundaries of the North Sea, resulting in a storm surge of historic proportions along the eastern UK and Northwest European Coastlines.

Holland will experience the brunt of the storm surge, with the highest values above sea level recorded since 1953.  According to Cors, a native of Holland the most recent data is showing a surge of 310 cm above sea level at New Amsterdam.  As conditions continue to worsen, a levee breach is unlikely, but not out of the question.  Check out the URL below for the recent storm surge data from Holland:

Here is a story from CNN focusing on the storm surge in southeast England:

That's crazy Tim! Thanks for sharing the picture. I've only seen thundersnow a few times in my life.

Last year we had a massive thunderstorm with sleet and freezing rain here in Norman. I drove in it on purpose and one of windshield wipers broke off.

exciting weather for Cors! - I hope he get's some footage!
The weather seems to be getting quite active.
I just made a video talking about a low pressure systems in the pacific. Then I read the weather discussion for Seattle today and they mention a 941 mb low!
I don't think i've heard of such things. here is part of the discussion:

MODELS STILL VARY QUITE
A BIT ON THE DEPTH AND TRACK OF THE LOW...WITH THE 18Z GFS THE
STRONGEST SHOWING AN INCREDIBLE 941 MB SUPER LOW OFF CENTRAL BC.

Here is the video i made - http://youtube.com/watch?v=Foq7mVNoNfg

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Cors | November 9, 2007 @ 5:16 AM #

the winds werent that strong inland. the storm surge was pretty high in rotterdam it reached 316cm above NAP(amsterdam new level) which is the second highest for that area. it show it here:
http://www.svsd.nl/index.cfm?page=waterstandgrafieken.denhelder&load=denhelder.H10
now were are getting some nice looking cells with hail flying by,,really incredible structure espescially with the rising sun the morning i took a walk through amsterdam to take some pics. but really not much wind inland at all so i think damage will be minimal.

I live on the South East Coast of England in a place called Dover, i'm keeping a eye on the web cam. The waves down here get really high with strong winds, it's awesome! We've had very strange weather this year with giant hail and big thunderstorms.

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Strike | November 9, 2007 @ 11:27 AM #

Cors, would it be safe to assume by that picture of the beach that the bulk of the surge has come and gone?

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Cors | November 9, 2007 @ 11:31 AM #

yup he threat has passed for us but I think the coastline took a beating, so if there would be another storm it might not hold as well and storm season has just started for us.

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Cors | November 9, 2007 @ 11:51 AM #

the highest gust ive seen so far was in Germany on the isle of Pellworm Schleswig-Holstein of 88mph or 141kmph. compared to Kyrill from last januari with 225kmph gusts it isnt that high.

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Reed | November 9, 2007 @ 11:52 AM #

Nice shots Cors! Textbook low-topped convection there.

It looks like on the satellite storms have fired in eastern Germany...any word on if they're supercellular?

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Jaclyn | November 9, 2007 @ 11:54 AM #

As usual there was an over-reaction of what the storm could do. It wasn't bad here at all, the only thing that happened was my mums flower pots got blown over. I'm glad no one got flooded but it was boring. I'm disapointed i was so psyched up for an amazing day :-(

If so, thanks for the chinook! :)

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Strike | November 10, 2007 @ 9:56 AM #

I'd be interested to see the difference in the radar they used compared to the normal stuff we all see now. And how did they determine the debris was at 10000 feet?

Maybe someone here could calculate the energy required to produce a 2 mile wide, 10000 foot high debris cloud. I just can't think on that scale.

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Bo | November 10, 2007 @ 12:12 PM #

Not sure if anyone else posted this...but if you follow this link, it takes you to a local news station page for Minneapolis---then there is a link to a website for Bogota, Columbia in the blurb that is written. They had some massive hail storm, and the hail was 3 feet deep in spots---almos tooks like a melting avalanche went through. If you click on the picture on the Bogota site, it will open a slide show. Pretty insane.

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Kenny | November 10, 2007 @ 12:36 PM #

Wow Bo..That's insane. At first I couldn't believe that it was hail...That's gotta be the worst hail storm of the century if not centuries...That's gotta suck for the firefighters that have to work and clean up that mess. How much death's were there if any?

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Heidi | November 10, 2007 @ 12:50 PM #

I think that either Cors or Volker did post that story a few days ago in another thread. (I *think* it was one of them, anyway??) But yeah, that was incredible. I couldn't believe that it was a hailstorm, either! It looked like it was a flash-flood with hail that had floated to the top, at least after it started melting, so I like your "melting avalanche" comparison, Bo!

Massive storm surge pounding parts of the UK and northwest Europe Comment Posted By Bo | November 10, 2007 @ 7:08 PM #

Yeah, that was amazing...a lot of water, and probably more of it from the melting hail. That must have been a very powerful storm that stalled out. Amazing. It did look like an avalanche. :) I imagine the air was quite a bit colder with all of that frozen/melting hail around.
