Heavy lake effect snow showers continue to the lee of Lakes Superior, Ontario, and Erie tonight, with over a foot of wet snow reported in parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan over the last 24-36 hours.  6-12 inches of snow has also fallen over the higher elevations of western NY, with the Tug Hill Plateau likely to receive the heaviest amounts.  Shown below are some radar loops from the U.P. of Michigan and western NY respectively:

Early in the winter season when the lake waters are still very warm, CAPE values of 1000+ J/kg are often achieved over the Great Lakes when Arctic air-masses move in.  Thus, thunder and lightning are quite common with the more intense lake effect showers.  Our plan later this winter is to document some intense lake effect snow bands downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario, where snowfall rates can exceed 5 inches per hour!

Growing up in Michigan, you can bet every winter we had HUGE amounts of snow. Since moving to the VA/DC area 14 yrs ago, we one sigificant snow fall we had we were snow bound for 3 days the blizzard of 96! We get snow here, not much, enough though for them to close the schools with just the "hint" of the white stuff. My kids love it.

Kim, it sounds like you miss it. I get it for 6 months, so I don't miss it. I don't want it. I could easily go 14 years without it. haha

Actually, I probably would miss it.

I must be crazy saying that.

LOL, yeh, Strike, sometimes I do miss it. The shoveling though.........well, you know! I would like at least once to get a sled or something to take my 7year old daughter sledding she would LOVE IT! Sometimes WE can actually wash our cars out in the driveway in January.......crazy!

I don't mind the snow when it's on a 32 degree day with no wind and large snow flakes. I also like it around christmas. What I really hate it the below 0 degree days and windy :(

Hey Reed. How are you feeling, hope your food poisoning is better?

This past year has been great so now it's time to work my arse off over winter and save up cash for next year! I've definitely go my eye on the southern hemisphere. Australia is really appealing however the holy grail for me would be to intercept a SW Indian Ocean cat. 5 in Madagascar.

I'm also going to start planning for a Bangladesh/India intercept since they are long overdue a massive Bay of Bengal monster cyclone. Damn if only I could win the lottery, then I would chase every storm in the world!!

I lived in Chardon Ohio on the shore of Lake Erie back in the mid 80's and I can remember thunder snow, and several times we had 3 or 4 feet of snow. A few times you couldn't open the garage door it was piled up so high, it was no wonder the roof didn't cave./
What do you say about that mid November snowstorm for the ohio and miss valleys?

Well i just got bad news...the chase vehicle i planned on renting/leasing from a buddy up north has been totalled. Appearently he was coming back from chasing a local severe event, and was driving down US Route 150, when a cottonwood tree was blown over by a gust of wind, well the tree landed on the hood of the vehicle, and because of the vehicles motion it almost pushed in all the way to the vehicles drive compartment. While the vehicle was totalled, i'm very glad to hear that Bill was un-injured.

Bad thing is that this was a very well set up chase vehicle . It was a older style Jeep Cherrokee, and had the essential emergency lights, being strobes, and lightbars, along with a roof mounted line of lights, that were more like miniature spotlights. The interior was originally gutted, leaving only the Front Seats/dash in tact. The passenger seat was re-designed to swivel, between looking forward or backwards, and in the back was a set up like no other. On one side of the vehicle, emergency supplies/gear were packed, along with Low, Medium, and High band HAM Radios. And built to be right there if you swivelled to turn around was a desk/area to mount your desktop and laptop computers.

Anyone else hear the sonic boom from the space shuttle re-entry?! AWESOME!!!!!!! It was over NE AR at 11:48, landing in FL 12 minutes later! AAAAA!!!

James, you need to get a corporate sponsor, like energy drinks or Mt. Dew or something. (Ideas for TV.net too!!!)

Sounds like an incredible chase vehicle Ben! Although I've never been a big fan of light-bar overkill...esp. when they mimic those of police cars. Maybe he'll have it fixed in time for next storm season.

That would be incredible to intercept a tc in India/Bangladesh...then you could chase a tornado outbreak while you're out there. Supposedly Bangladesh gets some of the strongest tornadoes in the world.

Is the lake effect snow still happening?
I'm jealous.. people are sledding today somewhere down there, and it's brown here.

Freezing rain in Alberta. Not good.
3 killed in bus crash on iced roads near Grande Prairie.
More fzra today/ tonight.
Will be interesting if Edmonton gets it.

Nah Reed, the vehicle is not fixable. Its already at the junk yard.

I'm not a big fan of Emergency light overkill at all either, but these were all interchangable i believe, and by that i mean i believe you could just have say the 4corner strobes(Rear tail light strobes, and front turnsignal strobes) on, and the spotlight bar. Basically if i remember right everything had its own on/off options. Meaning you could have one of lights on, two, or all three.

He did have 3 police style light bars, One in the passenger side back window, Ones on the driver side back window, and one in the back window.

I on one hand like this type of set up because if there is ever a emergency or we end up having to block a road we have a visible hazard light on the side of the vehicle. So if it were dark we would still be highly visible...but on the other hand i can agree with 3 being overkill, IF USED AT THE WRONG TIME. The only one of those lightbars i would have used is the rear window one, if/when we would be pulled over...or if we were driving 10mph or more under the posted speed limit.

I was thinking this summer about making an energy drink, Storm. It would be in nice 3D letters all capital and then the background image on the can would be lightning and stuff..But I haven't decided on what to mix it with yet..Maybe a little jolt..some other stuff. Any ideas?

Reed you feeling better? I burned myself a couple week's ago, some of you may know. It's healed now though! after 3 weeks or more of time. My advice is...NEVER MICROWAVE SOUP!!!!!
