A strong extra-tropical cyclone, that was once Hurricane Noel only a few days ago, is pounding New England and the Canadian Maritimes with strong winds gusting over 50 mph, heavy rain, and even heavy snow in northwestern Maine and southeast Quebec.  The minimum surface pressure of the cyclone was 975 mb as of 0600 UTC, which is very low for a mid-latitude cyclone.  Shown below is a regional radar loop from 2330 UTC to 0500 UTC, with blue representing snow and pink representing rain/snow mix.

The surface map from this region as of 0600 UTC shows maximum wind gusts in the mid 40s mph mainly along the coastal areas, with heavy snow falling in parts of Quebec just north of Maine.  The higher elevations of northwestern ME are likely experiencing very heavy, wet snow and gusting winds tonight, with power outages a certainty.

hey brady, u still here. I was wondering wots ur opinion about global warming?

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Cors | November 4, 2007 @ 1:51 AM #

I noticed I made a dumb remark about wildfires, namely that u cant predict them. at the time I was only thinking about arson. after doing some reading I noticed that about 80% of wildfires(in usa?) are caused by lightning(dry) personally I think arson has a much bigger role in wildfires(globally) but in the case of dry lightning it is possible to make a statistic prediction.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Kenny | November 4, 2007 @ 1:54 AM #

Haha, Nice Brady! GL with that snow for ya!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 4, 2007 @ 1:59 AM #

I honestly don't know what to think about it!! I was listening to a radio show a few months back when it was hot as hell and they were talking about record high temps being broken that were from like ??? I'll just say 1912!! Does that mean that GW caused those high temps in 1912?? That just kinda stuck in my mind!! But I've definately noticed that the surface temps of Lake Superior have been higher as the years move on!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Cors | November 4, 2007 @ 1:04 AM #

Brady, personally I think wildfires are the supreme proof that GW is caused by man. but I also noticed lots of remarks by people living close to lakes etc that there is definetly something going on. over here in holland we used to be an ice skating nation with lost of natural ice in winters, none of that anymore.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Kenny | November 4, 2007 @ 1:05 AM #

Some people think GW cause's some places to warm alot, causing the world to overheat and desinigrate. Other people think GW cause's colder then normal temperatures and could freeze the earth causing another Ice age. I believe in both of them. Eventually the world could get really hot in some place's causing heat stroke's to thousand's of people, melting the arctic and such more. If GW causes the arctic to melt, British Columbia will break apart from canada, then Alberta, will overflow during the summer or spring. Once it hit's winter Alberta could freeze, those water's could turn into ice and well theres Ice age number 2. There's plenty of scientific way's that the world could end by GW, but until we can find out GW's misteries and unknown clues, We have to just rely on what happen's visually and pshysically. These thing's make you think, huh?

ALTHOUGH NOEL IS A POST-TROPICAL STORM WE EXPECT IT TO BE
ACCOMPANIED BY HURRICANE FORCE WINDS. THE PUBLIC IS ADVISED NOT TO
FOCUS ON THE ACTUAL TRACK OF THE STORM CENTRE SINCE THE HIGH WINDS
ARE EXTENDING VERY FAR FROM THE TRACK LINE ITSELF.

3. PUBLIC WEATHER IMPACTS AND WARNINGS SUMMARY

THE STORM CIRCULATION IS REMARKABLY LARGE..AFFECTING ALL OF ATLANTIC
CANADA AND PARTS OF NEW ENGLAND.

WIND WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR NOVA SCOTIA..PEI..EASTERN AND
SOUTHERN PARTS OF NEW BRUNSWICK..THE MAGDALEN ISLANDS..AND PARTS OF
NEWFOUNDLAND AND QUÉBEC. THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IS NOW LIMITED TO
AREAS WELL WEST..NORTH AND EAST OF THE STORM CENTER. HEAVY SNOW IS
EVEN OCCURRING OVER PARTS OF LABRADOR WHERE SNOWFALL WARNINGS HAVE
BEEN POSTED.

THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN THE NEWFOUNDLAND WRECKHOUSE
AREA AND IN LES SUETES IN THE CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS...100 KM/H
GUSTING TO 160. 140 KM/H DAMAGING WIND GUSTS ARE FORECAST OVER PARTS
OF NOVA SCOTIA THIS MORNING. A PEAK WIND OF 117 KM/H WAS REPORTED AT
MCNAB'S ISLAND AT 06Z.

A PEAK SIGNIFICANT WAVE HEIGHT OF 14 M WAS MEASURED BY BUOY 44011 ON
GEORGES BANK NOT FAR EAST OF THE STORM CENTER. WE ARE WARNING THAT
THESE ENERGETIC WAVES WILL CREATE DANGEROUS POUNDING SURF CONDITIONS
ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA THIS MORNING AND INTO THE
AFTERNOON. WE ADVISE PEOPLE TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION NEAR THESE
SHORES. MEDIA REPORTS HAVE ALERTED US TO A HIGH LEVEL OF INTEREST IN
THESE WAVES BY THE PUBLIC AND WE ADVISE AGAINST ANYONE TESTING THESE
WATERS OR EVEN GOING NEAR THE SHORE.

STORM SURGE IS UNLIKELY TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM BECAUSE TIDES ARE
RUNNING LOWER THAN NORMAL. WE DO NOT EXPECT TOTAL WATER LEVELS TO BE
MUCH ABOVE HIGH ASTRONOMICAL TIDE.

DAMAGE/IMPACTS...
WHERE WIND GUSTS TO AND ABOVE HURRICANE FORCE (120-140 KM/H) ARE
FORECAST..EXPECT TREE LIMBS AND BRANCHES TO BREAK WHICH WILL LIKELY
LEAD TO DOWNED POWER LINES AND POWER INTERRUPTIONS. SOME TREES WILL
LIKELY BE UPROOTED. THESE WINDS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO ROOFING AND
CLADDING MATERIAL ON SOME HOMES. SOME SIGNAGE COULD ALSO SUFFER
DAMAGE WITH WINDS GUSTING THIS HIGH. ALSO..WITH 9-13-METRE WAVES
EXPECTED ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA... AND UPWARDS OF
8 METRES IN THE NORTHEAST GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE LATER TODAY. COASTAL
EROSION OF SOME BEACHES IS LIKELY WITH POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO WHARVES
AND DOCKS.

THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF TREE DAMAGE AND POWER OUTAGES IN THE
HALIFAX AREA LATE TONIGHT. THERE WAS ALSO A REPORT OF A ROOF LIFTED
OFF A TRAILER HOME SOMEWHERE IN THE CITY.

THE RAINFALL THREAT IS ALMOST OVER..BUT IN SOME PARTS OF
NEW BRUNSWICK AND WESTERN NOVA SCOTIA WHERE SOME ADDITIONAL RAIN
IS EXPECTED THIS MORNING..LOCALIZED FLOODING IN PRONE AREAS IS
LIKELY WHERE LEAF LITTER FROM THE STORM HAS CLOGGED STORM DRAINS.

4. MARINE WEATHER IMPACTS AND WARNINGS SUMMARY

HURRICANE FORCE WIND WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHWESTERN
MARITIME WATERS AND MOST GULF OF ST LAWRENCE WATERS. STORM AND GALE
WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR REMAINING WATERS OF THE MARITIMES AND
NEWFOUNDLAND AND FOR SOUTHERN LABRADOR AS WELL AS FOR SOME ST.
LAWRENCE RIVER WATERS.

5. TECHNICAL DISCUSSION

A. ANALYSIS
THE CENTER OF THE STORM IS RACING TOWARD WESTERN NOVA SCOTIA AT
FORECAST ISSUE TIME. IT APPEARS TO BE A BIT FARTHER EAST THAN
EARLIER EXPECTED..BUT NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE
FORECAST.

B. PROGNOSTIC
THE GEM REGIONAL MODEL..PRINCIPAL GUIDANCE FOR THIS
FORECAST..INITIALIZED THE STORM ABOUT 10 MB TOO HIGH. ACCORDINGLY..
WE MAINTAIN OUR CURRENT INTENSITY FORECAST AND BUMP-UP THE GEM
WIND SPEEDS. THE STORM STILL LIKELY HAS REMANANTS OF A WARM CORE
WITH GUSTY WINDS MIXING DOWN FROM THE TOP OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER.

OVERALL FORECAST REMAINS UNCHANGED EXCEPT FOR SLIGHTLY EASTWARD-
ADJUSTED TRACK FORECAST BASED ON SAT PIX AND MODEL TRACKS. THE
MOST DAMAGING WINDS ARE SET TO MOVE ACROSS NOVA SCOTIA AT ISSUE
TIME. AN INTERMEDIATE BULLETIN WILL BE ISSUED BY 6 AM AST.

C. PUBLIC WEATHER
SEE ABOVE.

D. MARINE WEATHER
SEE ABOVE.

GIVEN THE TROPICAL HISTORY OF THIS STORM..THE CANADIAN HURRICANE
CENTRE WILL CONTINUE TO PREPARE STORM BULLETINS TODAY.

Cors: Your write that GW is caused by human's in some way's but also by nature. For example: Green house gases are caused by man. It'll take alot of studying to figure out this one. Some thing's are not to be figured out, I think GW is one of them.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Cors | November 4, 2007 @ 1:13 AM #

It reminds me of this southpark episode when someone mentions global warming could lead to a new ice age heheh ,,,the reaction of the people after that remark is kinda funny, cause it doesnt make a whole lot of sence now does it? ok greenland is massive and the ice there is melting. I think GW will prolly lead to more extreme weather, floods, droughts etc

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 4, 2007 @ 1:13 AM #

It seems there is a lotta wildfires around here!! mostly in the spring!! I've heard of some being caused by people, but not often is it found to be deliberate arson!! Usually just unattended campfires, cig butts!! stuff like that!! I light a lil grass fire with a lil fircracker when I was younger!! I didn't mean too, but I didn't call for help either!! hehe I hust jumped on the wheeler and hauled ass!! Seeing as no one was hurt and the quite a few acres I burned grew back completely within a few weeks!! I laugh at it know!! But I'm a lil more grown up now too!! And if something like that happened to me again! I would do the right thing!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Cors | November 4, 2007 @ 1:22 AM #

Brady, I've been following wildfires this year and let me tell ya, I would bet, this year was the worst fire season on record. australia, greece, thailand, california all experience the worst wildfires.
forest are the primary filter for drinking water, if u loose the forest u loose ur watersupply

Well... Maybe with a lil luck GW will cause "Tornado Alley" to move a lil more northeast!! hehe One can only hope!! If it's somethingI can't personally stop, I might as well try to get some pics or something!! hehe

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Cors | November 4, 2007 @ 1:31 AM #

hey brady, I think thats already happening. I'm kinda trying to make people aware of it, but since im no scientist I might do worse then good, but at least I try ;)

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 4, 2007 @ 1:32 AM #

We had a pretty good fire this spring that spread into Canada!! It got kind ugly I guess! I didn't personally see it, but it was a few days of hell up there!! Thank god we got the rain we did!! I think northern MN is a ticking time bomb!! There was some huge fires around here in 1918! My great granny had stories, but she's gone now so I have to ask my mom if she remembers any of her stories!! That scares me more than tornadoes in the dark!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Cors | November 4, 2007 @ 1:38 AM #

yea brady that remind me of my own country we've always battled against the water, considering half the country is below sea level. thing is that most dutch take pride in the fact we are experts in watermanagement(building levees etc) cause it comes close to hubris. I mean some dutch consider themselvels experts when it comes to building dykes etc purely on the basis of being dutch. I did some scanning of our primairy levee called the closure dyk, and I seriously discovered some holes in it just by scanning it on google earth.

Now that I think of the fire this spring! I'm kinda tick with myself for not going up there to get some pics or vid!! I was already posting here at the time!! =( And I'm still kicking myself for not going toward ND the night Northwood got leveled!! I could have at least helped you guys with some aftermath pics!! Next time for sure!!

We definitely need to get a climate section to the site. Has anyone ever noticed that the CPC forecasts an above normal winter every year! The forecasts should be made relative to the increasing temperature trend

When Reed asked if we have noticed that the CPC forecasts an above normal winter every year, he immediantly read my mind. Over the years the CPC says we are going to see w warmer than avg. winter. I'm pretty aggrivated by them. Basically we shouldn't pay attention to those forecasts. Nobody can predict that far into the future!

Hi folks,

Check out the special weather statements issued by EC for reported wind gusts and rainfall amounts,

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/warnings/sws_e.html

Highest gust reported so far is 146 km/hr at Grand Etang Nova Scotia. There's also a news article on the storm on the Toronto Star's website,

http://www.thestar.com/News/article/273353

Serious winds were forecast for Newfoundland, we'll see if they verify.

Simon E.

p.s. A climate discussion board would be great! But I expect the discussion might get a little "heated."
...sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Wind Advisory here!! I have a crack in my living room window that the management told me about 5 times they were gonna fix!! It sounds like creepy Halloween sound effects!! They say some snow later, but it doesn't sound like a lot!! but when Megastorm ( The Perfect Storm) hit us they first were saying like 2" to 4"!! Which turned into 36"!!
Rifle hunting for deer is in full swing in Minny!! The hunters would love a lil tracking snow!!!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Simon E. | November 4, 2007 @ 1:16 PM #

Well, it has been said that predicting snowfall amounts is among the greatest of forecasting challenges. So what they should have said was 2" to 4" plus or minus 30"

Matt, I bet that was something called graupel instead of hail. Check this out:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff207/ontariostormchaser/PICT0204-1.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graupel

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By caleb | November 4, 2007 @ 4:26 PM #

Heidi How could that be graupel? it's microscopic! and that hail you can see! you must be confused

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Heidi | November 4, 2007 @ 4:48 PM #

Caleb, graupel is not microscopic - the Wikipedia definition shows microscopic images of it, but it is visible without the help of a microscope. - - - I did make a mistake in posting one of Matt's photos instead of the ones I wanted to, though. Here are some photos of graupel that I thought I had coppied and pasted in my last post:

http://www.avalanche.org/~uac/photos/Images06-07/3-27-07,%20Big%20graupel,%20Nalli.jpg

http://research.uwb.edu/jaffegroup/uploads/photos/14.jpg

Those photos came from this website:
http://www.lexic.us/definition-of/Graupel

^^ That link is what I meant to post last time, but ended up pasting Matt's photo link again.

Here is another pretty good photo of graupel:

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Volker | November 4, 2007 @ 4:53 PM #

If the size of the corns is under 0.5 cm it's Graupel, everything above that is hail. Corns under 1 mm in diameter are called "Griesel" (I don't know the English word for it - snow grains or sth.?).

@Will kucharek: I just found that video, I haven't recorded it.

@Cors: They're currently discussing about a general speed limit of 130 km/h (circa 80 mph) on the German Autobahn :-( ;P.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 4, 2007 @ 5:23 PM #

Lil bit of precip pulling into town, but it's still 46f!! Maybe some flurries later!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Heidi | November 4, 2007 @ 5:35 PM #

Okay Caleb. I agree that not everything on Wikipedia is true. Let's try Dictionary.com:

Graupel: snow pellet
n. A small white ice particle that falls as precipitation and breaks apart easily when it lands on a surface. Often used in the plural. Also called graupel, soft hail.

How about Merriam-Webster's?:

Function: noun
Etymology: German
Date: 1889
: granular snow pellets - - called also soft hail

Or you could just look at what Volker said, too. :)

Even with Gr3 which I didn't have on the road. it's hard when your solo to look at that stuff when your hauling ass down a busy interstate!! It's hard enough yakin on a phone ,but much safer than looking at a laptop!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Matt | November 4, 2007 @ 6:52 PM #

Just some things that could come in handy when chasing. If you dont know the area a road map helps. Also a not so great car would do because if you encounter some hail i know if i took my dad 2008 Ford Escape out chasing and got hailed on it wouldnt be a pretty site.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Matt | November 4, 2007 @ 7:12 PM #

Ya well looks like anyother debate weather or not that was hail in my pics. Because according to Volker if there over 0.5cm or 5mm then its hail and those things were over 5mm

The weatherbug say light snow after midnight accumulation of an inch or less!! So I would think it should come down pretty good!! It hasn't been under freezing much so I wouldn't expect it to stay long!!

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 4, 2007 @ 7:20 PM #

If it was that hard and didn't last very long!! I would say hail!! hehe

Isn't hail associated with strong convective storms as opposed to freezing temps?

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Reed | November 4, 2007 @ 8:24 PM #

It looks like 6 inches was the most reported last night in Maine: Aroostook County:

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Matt | November 5, 2007 @ 10:34 AM #

Hey Heidi according to Volker he said that if there over 0.5 comor 5mm then there considered hail does that mean in diameter or what.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Matt | November 5, 2007 @ 10:37 AM #

that was supposed to be cm not com

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Heidi | November 5, 2007 @ 11:01 AM #

I am trying to nail down some size specifics that determine whether a particle is hail or graupel, but I am having some dificulty. I just found a source that says that hail is greater than 1 cm and graupel is smaller than 1 cm ... but in either case, the measurement would be the diameter.

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF LOWER OH VALLEY SWD INTO WRN/MIDDLE TN

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 051604Z - 051700Z

POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR ADDITIONAL ELEVATED TSTMS TO DEVELOP FROM FAR
SRN IL EWD THROUGH WRN/CENTRAL KY LATE THIS MORNING INTO THE EARLY
AFTERNOON. ISOLATED HAIL...SOME SEVERE...REMAINS POSSIBLE WITH THE
STRONGER ACTIVITY.

TSTMS HAVE DEVELOPED THIS MORNING ACROSS THE LOWER OH VALLEY FROM
SRN IL EWD INTO WRN KY WHERE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE/WARM AIR ADVECTION
ARE AIDING IN SUFFICIENT DESTABILIZATION ALONG NOSE OF WSWLY LLJ FOR
ELEVATED TSTM ACTIVITY. SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED A COLD FRONT
EXTENDING FROM LM SWWD THROUGH IL TO CENTRAL MO INTO CENTRAL OK.
STRENGTHENING SWLY LOW LEVEL FLOW DEVELOPING AHEAD OF THIS
PROGRESSIVE FRONT WILL MAINTAIN MOISTURE RETURN INTO LOWER OH/TN
VALLEYS. HOWEVER...MODEST MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES /6.5-7.0 C/KM/ DUE
TO LACK OF STRONGER MID LEVEL COLD AIR ADVECTION AS THIS REGION
REMAINS S OF MID/UPPER LEVEL JET AXIS ARE EXPECTED TO RESULT IN WEAK
INSTABILITY TODAY. DESPITE THIS FACTOR...WAA AND EFFECTIVE BULK
SHEAR OF 25-30 KT THIS MORNING SUGGEST A FEW STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE
OF PRODUCING ISOLATED SEVERE HAIL.

GREATER SEVERE THREAT MAY DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AS DEEP LAYER SHEAR
IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE ACROSS THE LOWER OH/TN VALLEYS AS BOTH THE
LLJ AND MID LEVEL WINDS STRENGTHEN WITH SHORT WAVE TROUGH MOVING
INTO THE MIDWEST/GREAT LAKES. THIS IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR AS SURFACE
HEATING RESULTS IN POTENTIAL FOR SOME STORMS TO BECOME SURFACE

WHERE HEATING WILL BE THE STRONGEST TO WEAKEN THE CINH.
GIVEN THIS POTENTIAL...PART OF MID SOUTH WILL BE UPGRADED TO A
SLIGHT RISK.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Volker | November 5, 2007 @ 12:05 PM #

The consistence of the corn is decisive, not necessarily the size. Hail is solid and tougher than Graupel (because of this Graupel does not cause damage - hail does). The size is just a simplification to indicate whether it could be hail or Graupel. One can say the factor of the consistence and the size have to be considered together.

Remnants of Hurricane Noel pounding New England/Canadian Maritimes Comment Posted By Volker | November 5, 2007 @ 2:42 PM #

Thank you Cors, that's very heavy! If heard about it one or two days ago, but never saw that video.

Yesterday I got to know that a F2 Tornado occured nearby my location (just 2-3 km away) in 2003. At this time I was not such a active weather observer. The Tornado ripped through a forest and fortunatily missed a village.
