Lake effect snow warnings have been issued over parts of Northern Lower Michigan, as intense northwesterly flow lake effect bands have developed in the wake of a strong cold front that moved across the Great Lakes earlier today. Shown below is a graphical display of the warnings and advisories in place for this event:

During cold northwesterly flow events, Northern Lower Michigan often receives the brunt of the snowfall since the cold air "picks up" moisture from both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, resulting in especially intense snowbands over Northern Lower. As seen in the composite reflectivity loop below from this afternoon, a single intense snowband stretches from central Lake Superior, across the Upper Peninsula, and across Lake Michigan into the Northern Lower Peninsula! Given the increased fetch over the relatively warm waters of both lakes, any locations under this snow band in the Northern Lower Peninsula will see especially intense snowfall rates, with up to a foot or more of snow likely by tomorrow morning!

In other news, the long-range models are indicating the potential for a major winter storm for this weekend from the Central/Southern Plains to the Great Lakes Region. Stay tuned for updates regarding this event!

Reed thanks for the updated info and it sounds like you'll get to see some really good snow now :) Hope it doesn't snow too much this weekend in KS. I need to get my xmas lights up sometime .....
Wanna see what it's like here right now?? (btw, again in the -30s C with windchill)

Speeking of photobucket stuff... I'm uploading 2 videos I made from yesterday!
WOW that looks like some fairly heavy snow SKgirl!
How much would you estimate you have on the ground now?
Between yesterday and today I'd say a good 6 inches already...there's some drifts over a foot high!! It's crazy!! If it stops snowing tomorrow (like its supposed to) I'll take some pics of the overall accumulation. People must think i'm nuts freezing my hands and taking pictures in this weather haha
OK here is the video but this is 1/2

Monte, you haven't gotten your lights up yet? Shame on you. ;) haha. I'm waiting to see how our supposed weekend snow dumper will develop... maybe the moisture will be there....
Hey everyone, how goes it?
here is part 2
http://s212.photobucket.com/albums/cc208/NADOKID1/?action=view¤t=100_0525-1.flv
SKgirl only 6!??! Theres about 10 even 15 cm's in some areas here! 1-3 more expected tonight. I hope it happens!! I made a video of the heavy snow that hit last night! I'll upload everything later.
kenny: 2.54cm per inch, so 6 inches is a little over 18 inches. We should all be on the metric system!
Congrats on the snow!
I want that kind of snow! Dangit. lol. Oh well, maybe I'll get it this weekend... which reminds me, I should check the forecast for that.

Sorry Kenny, yeah I hate using cm or km that crap. I may be old school or something haha. I prefer using things like inches/feet. So yes, we have about 15 cm (i'm sure much more than that by now!). We even still have a chance of more snow tomorrow afternoon..
Awesome, just awesome. Nice photography SKgirl. Brady your forecast is looking good. Are you planning on documenting the intense snow bands?
I plan on trying to intercept some of the best(strongest) snow bands around here this year, and i may even open a case study into what i call the "River Valley Effect" or "River effect" Because it always seems like the highest snow totals in our area are always just East, But not right along the river, kind of like Lake effect snow.
Thanks, Ben!!! I love my photography haha. Maybe i should make that career #3 :P
Hey Brady, as i look up to the north out of West Duluth i see some lake effect clouds along the hill side, SE wind must be kicking in..
I hope we see snow/ice this weekend like models are currently showing!!
looks like a fairly widespread snow/ice event setting up this weekend for much of the Central Plains, Great Lakes, and possibly the Upper Midwest too. Should be interesting.. 12z EURO model from Today drops the pressure with the surface low down to 982 mb once the low reaches Lake Huron early Monday, pretty deep low for late November..If it verifies
Do you think Oklahoma will see anything? Cuz thats where I live.
Zack, by the latest model runs, you and I might be in for more ice than anything else... which worries some of us up in SW KS, because it would be a shade like what happened back in January.
The GFS has it at 986 i believe...and Zach i think it will be touchy about whether you get any in OKC...and if you do plan on Rain.
AJ, from looking at the models for a bit now, you may be spared a brunt of the action, and may also want to plan on a Rain/Freezing Rain Event...according to the models.
I see it as Rain during the day changing to freezing rain/sleet/snow at night.
I don't know...... The types of systems are very hard to forecast. I think the best chances for ice/snow may be in northern oklahoma. But I have seen these types of storms suprise me. And AJ I agree. I definently hope we don't get another one like that for a long time!
I agree Zac...with a K. Sorry.
I'm just following, and suggesting what the model is showing...it has been kinda jumpy with the system though...as in here Central IL, it has shown the Low Passing South many time, and now has the low passing directly over the area.
Aw crap, I'd rather have a foot of snow than an inch or two of ice to deal with... oh well. I bet you gas money that it will change by Thursday. lol. If nothing else, I'll switch out the tires on my truck and go winter-storm chasing. ;)
I know, thats what frustrates me the most about the weather. The models seem to always have their own side of the story. If you guys want to stay up to date with the latest info about Oklahomas weather go to my site!^^
Hey guys! Hows everybody doing this evening?
More snow is forecasted for us here tonight into tomorrow. 5-10 cm (2-4") of snow is a possibility. I only hope the winds won't be strong, as this -30 and below windchill is just too cold!
Yes I agree with Ben in the fact that the model has been jumpy, moving the lows predicted position around. I guess we'll have to see what plays out, hopefully all snow for you guys who will be affected by it, if that's what you want! :P
Jon
Hey Jon. Yeah We're hoping its all SNOW.
Yea Jon, I'm just hoping to be on the North side of the Low...But it doesnt look good for that right now, if it passes near I will chase it, But if the county is affected i'll most likely have to hang here, and do road reports for the county, and help stranded motorist. Back in Feb 07, we pulled 246 cars out of the ditch, and responded to 3 MVA's. Including a School bus crash. Noone was injured Bush just slid across the road into a cornfield.
Does anyone know what PL stands for on the Precip Forecast?
And Reed, What do you think about my river valley theory?
If it does become another bad ice storm, I'm fitting my sport ATV with spiked ice tires, and going riding. lol. I wonder what iced-over sand is like... hehe.
Always an eye on the weather... I'm out for the nite, see ya guys later!
I don't know if I plan to document em persay Ben!! I know I'm gonna write my name in em!! hehe If I don't keep ya all posted I'm sure Tim will!! hehe
It sucks when you break through the crust AJ!! Wheelers are only good on packed snow!! I've learned that the hard way!!
haha. I'll keep that in mind Brady, thanks ;) Ok, now I really have to go, I'm getting yelled at... later guys!
Still snowing... only -26 C with windchill so warming up at least haha.
Brady!! is your yahoo msg account name the same as your email???
Yes it is!! looks like it's snowin pretty good north of me!! I hope it moves this way a lil more!!
ya man that snow band looks pretty intense over Northcentral St. Louis and Central Lake Counties right now (11 pm) nice to see some snow breaking out farther south/sw of DLH right now, i'd say between 1 AM-3 AM should be snowing here in the city..
Alright well..heres a picture from 7:20 this morning from the 13 cm's we had here, 15 this afternoon, and about 18 by tomorrow morning. I also have a video from the heavy part that hit us last night...
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/1425/dsc00808ko3.jpg
It's warmed up some!! It was 9 when I got home from work!! Now it's 13!! I'm gonna crash for the night!! Hopefully the stuff will be flying a lil by the time I get up!! Have a good one
Haha yes! Snowfall Warnings going up to my West in Southern Manitoba in accordance with this large snowband. It's moving my way...hopefully we get upgraded to warning status too! :D:D:D
Jon
by looking at the water vapor satellite imagery, definately looks like a nice lil wound up low pressure system over Southern Manitoba/Northern North Dakota late Tonight
Still snowing here guys!! Can't believe it. Just walked back from a friends place and we walked behind the buildings, shortcut, and holy crap..walking through foot of snow in some places. And wherever we did walk, in those 4 hours, it was re-covered!! We also just heard the plow cleaning off the parking lots at the university if that gives you a clue. I promise pictures tomorrow :). For now, I must find an extra blanket--and sleep lol
Nice shots Kenny!
60 deg and sunny down here
Hey Reed, i'll trade you weather! Haha, officially here in Central IL, its cloudy with a Temp of 43 degrees, and winds 15-20 out of the SW.
May i ask what you plan to do this weekend? Plan on Documenting a plains snowstorm?
Any you may have missed my other post, But What do you think about my "River Valley Effect" Theory. Because it always seems like the heaviest snow is just east of the River, But not right along the river.
...andddd its still snowing haha. I took few pics so far, will upload them in a bit. So it looks like this -30 C weather is here to stay, too. Sure came out of nowhere but..thats Saskatchewan for you :P
Hey guys wats up today?????
I got some snow yesterday and i actually filmed it how bout that ill upload it later.
Alright guys, got you some photos, this was the best I could do:

Ha you must be back in OK as it is not 60 in GR.
How did northern Michigan make out with the snow?
Nice pictures SKgirl. It's cold and windy here today and it is sounding more like another ice event this weekend vs. snow which will be a mess as usual. Hopefully it misses us and just snows.
That system you folks are expecting for the weekend looks insane on the 240hr GFS loop.
Is there a nickname you have for this type of thing?
Baja Steamer?
I'd like a pineapple express up here please.
The weekend storm does look interesting, that's for sure. Looks like quite a bit of warm air is gonna get drawn north per latest GFS model run, so that could lead to more of an ice/rain threat across the Plains, with snow or mix snow/ice over the Upper Midwest. Also, appears that the low could be an a weakening phase as it heads out of the Rockies and into the Plains, before it deepens again once it reaches Lower Michigan on Sunday. GFS/EURO models show quite the storm though by Sunday Night/Monday...Pressures down around 982 mb or so! This will be a fun one to watch in the coming days. As for last night's snow bust, ha! Only an inch, perhaps two inches here in Duluth, what a load of crap! Even the Northshore of Lake Superior only had around 3 or 4 inches. Oh well, maybe this weekend will get more.
Wow SKgirl - that's some snow! That looks about the same as what we had this past January (I think it was Jan. , maybe Feb. though?). I think I'm being disappointed right now because this event for the weekend looks like "just" rain for us. Maybe we'll get some storms (hah!!!). We really do need the rain though, so I won't complain.
I need to catch up and look at everyone's videos(CALEB!!! :D) and photos.
And Reed, where is the EXTREME footage of this from MI?!?! :D
I'm back in Oklahoma now!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaa it always happens there after I leave.
That shows how good my skimming skilz are. I totally missed:

Nice shots Kenny!
60 deg and sunny down here
Doh!
Yeah Heidi, there was a lot of it. At this rate is looking up to be like last year where we had 6+ foot snow piles along the sides of the streets, and so much that they had to haul truckloads out of town because they were getting too high. At least thats what I hope for anyways haha
I just watched Caleb's video. I've come to realize that he's a true pioneer in the storm chase world, as one of his specialties is filming the wind at night. :D Good Man, Caleb!
Snow bust is right Tim!! WTF That was as big a bust as most of our tornado threats hehe Maybe this weekend!!
New special weather statement just came out!!
For southern wisconsin

Hey guys! Nice to see you back home in our neck of the woods, or plains, Reed. ;) Caleb, nice job! I didn't think I could see the wind at night, but I guess I was wrong... hehe jk.
ya i was pretty disappointed about last night's non-event up here. The weekend system looks ok right now up in this area, as long as it doesn't shift more to the south, and that could happen. I noticed the WRF/NAM/NMM, what-ever they call it these days is wayyyyyy slower than most of the other models at launching this SW U.S. low into the Plains this weekend, but it seems that the GFS has been performing quite well as of late, so too is the ECM, so will see.. But, hey Duluth, MN was featured on The Weather Channel again Tonight, wow 2nd night in a row, am i dreaming?
hey all i havn't posted for a few days- i had a little flubug and well lookign at the models- wow rain and and snow and ice ohh my lol i actually think there could even be ome severe weather in eastner arkansas western tenn. and northern miss. if enough instability develops
I should start watching TWC more!! hehe That's two for us Tim!! hehe
I made a litttle "Banner" type of thing to put on one of my black shirt's. It says STORM(tornado emoticon) CHASER!! Haha yay!! I'm going to wear it whenever I chase!! So if ya see someone on a Bike with that a shirt saying that, It's defintely me!! :)
cool kenny i took some of my better pictures and went on cafepress and slapped them ona t-shirt and selling them
Hello Again, If any thing crazy happens in Maine, I'll send some pics or video.
We have been getting a lot of "Micro Burst" the last few years. The damage trail left by them looks similar to a tornadoes'. A straight line wind we call em here.
Sorry I posted this also in the previous headline
Probably similar to the Derecho event we had here some years back that blew down millions of trees! Nice to hear from ya Joe!! We here were watching some weather earlier this year that way!! Please keep us posted on what's up in your neighborhood!! =)
well i'm offically on the giddy side right now, could be a nice snow event here in Duluth late Saturday/Sunday Morning 6 plus inches certainly looks possible at the moment. I really hope that the low doesn't shift toward the south, seems that the low is on a more northward track with each new model run, i hope that continues. AFD out of Chanhassen MN even mentions the potential for THUNDERSNOW for S.MN late Saturday! weeeeeeeeee! and oh, one last thing. GO PACK GO!
Thunder snow is awesome.
:D
And I thought it was against Minnesota Law to utter phrases such as "GO PACK GO?" It's written somwehere, I'm sure. Regardless, I believe it probable that Romo et al will make you regret your enemy affiliations. :P
The GFS 18Z model for Sunday looks a bit on the interesting side. On the next run it will be available on WRF also, so I'm curious to see how much they are in agreement. (I use the menu at the College of DuPage site, and the WRF only goes to 84 hrs. Is that standard for the WRF? I've always wondered...)
hey heidi! look what's heading my way :D
http://www.sat24.com
955mb?
Hey Cors, Where abouts do you live again? in Amsterdam is it? sorry if im wrong..... was just wondering which direction is that heading i was wondering if it may pass over England?
WOW! What's the hype over here on this one? End of the world scenario? ;D
@ Tim J - yeah, he's in Amsterdam.
Ok thanks Heidi, and also i kinda jumped the gun there, are you looking at the system over the north sea? Prably a stupid question but i dont want too be looking in the wrong place like......
and sorry havent been on for the past few days, been ill......
