Here is a summary of the SW Texas Winter Storm, with the snowfall data and pictures obtained from the Midland NWS website. As can be seen in the snowfall graphic, measurable snow was reported as far south as the Rio Grande River! -- Although I bet there were some higher amounts in the mountains of northern Mexico as well. Interestingly, these type of events are most common during El Nino years, when an abnormally strong subtropical jet stream transports huge amounts of Pacific moisture into the region. However, this event occurred during a rapidly strengthening La Nina event!

The photos below were taken by Moises of Big Spring, TX, where 6-8 inches of wet snow fell. The vorticity maximum responsible for this snowfall continued to track northeastward through Oklahoma, but only a mix of rain and snow fell there - but if the low-level temperatures were about a degree or two cooler, 6-8 inches of snow would also have been the result. Thankfully, Norman, OK didn't get any accumulating snow since I'm in Michigan!

Nice info Reed and some good pictures also. We received about 2 inches in SC Kansas but it melted by the next day. Hope everyone had a good turkey day :)
Sweet pics!! OMG you guys, soooo cold. Got about 3 inches of snow already in Regina now (just between overnight/this morning). it's -19 C, -33 with windchill. Can you say....welcome to winter?!
Maybe later I'll freeze my hands off and take a few pics of the snow on my way back to afternoon class
i know i did thanks for asking monty i hope yours was good- 2 inchs is better then no snow at all
Thanks Donny I did have a great one also. It was nice to see the snow and it added to the ambiance :)
Looking way out on the GFS I noticed some extremely cold conditions for much of the Midwest into the Northeast from Minnesota to Illinois and points east. It also looks like a possible winter storm is on tap for parts of N OK, KS, & MO this weekend.
I'm not sure if this will pan out, but this seems quite different from what I thought a La Nina winter would be like based on past events and the models.
Maybe I'm wrong though.
Actually your right Micheal..... This so called La Nina is not really effecting the climate it seems. I think the Climate prediction center was wrong this time. Besides they forecast a above average winter every year if you guys haven't noticed!!
I was just checking that out too, Michael. I wonder about our temps here in AR, though, and if they'll get down far enough for it to be snow. I've only heard of the crippling ice storms this area seems to get every three or four years ... I think I'd rather see it all as snow! =-O The 12Z run on Sunday looks promising for some kind of precip here anyway.
(Completely off topic, but relevant nonetheless...) If anyone is still interested in knowing about relief organizations for Cyclone Sidr:

If you guys want to see pics from the snowfall in Canora on Friday, and from the -30s weather today here in Regina look at this album:

We had snow here in Abilene, TX also. Although I was out of town for most of the weekend, there was still a light coating on the ground when I got home sunday night. On my way home on I-20 I passed through Ranger, TX which had a pretty good coating of snow, and made me hopeful of what I might find at home... but a few miles down the road the ground was clear again...
It was a bad night to be on I-20 though, my trip that normally takes right at 3 hours took 4 & 1/2 due to the weather, accidents & horrible traffic.
Im out for the night guys, feel really bad lol......hope you all have a good day, see ya!!
Oh and also, please vote for the winner of the picture of the month competition on my site, all the entries are at the bottom of the monthly article, blog, it will end soon and we have only had 4 votes!! please

Caleb I'm not sure what the official name for those are haha. I've always just known as "sundogs"...it looks like a halo on both sides of the sun in the colour of the rainbow. Only tend to see those around here when it is in the -30s C (which I guess is -22 F or below).
Hey guys its snowing right now were i am im going to try and get some video but i dont think its going to go good but ill give it a shot anyway.
By the way, temperature has now dropped to -22 C, feels like -36 C (thats -33 F)
More snow for me this Evening, Overnight, Morning! :) I'll take pictures soon.

Just got in the door!! How's everyone?? Ya know sumtin aint right when Texas has more snow than Minny!! =( Maybe we'll get lucky and get more tornadoes in July or something to return the favor! hehe It's nice to see your still in the great white north eh! Hopefully you can score more snow before you head back!!
Kenny here is the heavy snow forecast for you

I'm good here Brady! It's cooling off fast now, from closer to 40, to 35 now, and still dropping. Another freezing night...
I have a significant storm system forecasted to move in over the weekend... TWC called it a "major snow producer"... we'll see what happens.
20 here AJ!! And it looks like things are gonna get freaking cold here!! I'm hoping for some this week myself!! hehe
haha. Yeah, at least the temps will be perfect. Now all we're looking for is moisture, and so far, I can't find it... haha
Hey AJ,
I was talking about that storm earlier, I'm not sure what it will do, but as of now it sure does look like a major snow producer and a possible ice storm for some areas as well. It's nearly impossible to pinpoint an area now where it could be the most intense!
Sure does look like something to keep your eyes on. I certainly will.
haha. Thanks Michael. The earliest reports I saw said my exact area would be hardest hit, but you know how the NWS likes to change their mind ;) You know I'll be watching it rather closely.
lol sweet dude!!! I hope you folks down in SW Kansas don't hog it all for us folks up in NE Kansas ;)
WHOO 2-4" more snow coming tomorrow (along with still just as cold). Oh how I love Canadian prairies.... ;)
Caleb, that link doesn't work.
Well...I'm bored, not snowing as much as I wish it could, but tomorrow afternoon I'll take pictures. Were suppose to have about 5 or 6 cm's on the ground by tomorrow afternoon.
Now why would we do that Michael? haha Well, I have some work to do, I'll be back later sometime. See ya guys!
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/index_e.html?id=WHK :D!!! Snow stregthening and heading for me!!! I will try to get video!
This is really, really, really big snow. Really. August 17th of this year in South Dakota ...

There are 4 parts to this series. =-O
Well I was disappointed to see my usual Mantracker on OLN not on at midnight butttt discovered that right now at 11 it will be "Stormchasers" :). They don't say anything about the episode but watching that is well worth a break from studying Computer Science haha
"Scientists follow tornadoes, hurricanes, and hailstorms. Starring Surindra Bhandari, Howard Bluestein, Robert Sheets, Narrated by Hal Holbrook. 1995."...so oldschool!! but honestly havent seen it before....
Reed, are you still in Michigan? If you are, what parts? I'm in Lansing this week working. If you are around and close, we should grab a beer or 12. Email me and let me know. Chad.
4.5 cm's of snow on the ground so far! I'll take pictures in the morning. I'm predicting about 6 cm's by morning, and maybe an additional 2 cm's by afternoon.
Lucky you SKgirl!! I don't have OLN..parent's cut it off, so I have to wait till it premieres on the Discovery Channel :(
Wow, the tornado equipment they show on here. Can't believe it used to be that bad.
Kenny, it's an old one. like I said, 1995! They stole the name haha. I watched the modern ones on youtube because all I've seen so far with the TIV and stuff was on National Geographic Canada (and I fell asleep at the end of it). I hope they EVENTUALLY put it in our Discover Channel
AJ, Kenny, everyone stop bragging about your snow!
It's like all of Texas got some except for here! Even Texas Stadium got snow during the Cowboys game, and I live less than 2 counties away!
44 degrees here right now. Looks like we may be in for a major cooldown near the end of the GFS forecast, maybe then I will get some snow...
By the way Brady, there's no way in hell Texas will share it's tornadoes with you if I can have anything to do with it!!
hello everyone! What pretty much sums up my day? "BRRRRRRR!!!!" :D
It was cold today! Not to mention coming home from school it was blustery! Wind, cold, snow, etc. The visibility was terrible. You couldn't see more than a block or so ahead of you. We accumulated about 5cm. (2") of snow today in my part of Winnipeg. That makes about.......10-15 cm. (4-6") this year total as of now.
EC says someting about more snow this week....tomorrow night and through the day Wednesday.
Well, looks like it's time for me to go...very late lol. :P
Goodnight and cya!
Jon
PS: Sorry Connor, I'm not trying to brag. I hope you do get the snow there in Texas that you want. :D
I don't know what happened, but we just got ourselves a few inches since my last post!! hehe it's now 7f and rapidly dropping!! I'm off to bed!! Gnite all!! Brrrr
Wind NW @ 28mph gusting to 40!! 6.8f, windchill -16f!! ooofff!!!
nice pics reed, we are having some fast developing clouds here today, im keeping an eye out for possible funnels. took this picture today-^
We're sitting at a goose egg!! 0f!! Windchil -22f!! Brrr!! I hope the furnace at work is running!! Have a good day all!!
it's freeeeeeeeezing Brady, holy crap i got out of work and i was like wowwwwwwwwww! It sure wakes ya up! Hallock, Warroad, and Thief River Falls have air temps down to around 14 below here at 7 AM. Pressure rises around 8 mb/hour right now in wake of this surface low over Lake Superior. Storm warnings, gale warnings out for Lake Superior right now, talking about a period of white-out/blizzard conditions over the U.P. of Michigan This Morning.
We got alot of snow over the last couple of days. My fiancee and I waited in it for an hour on Black friday to get some killer deals at BestBuy. Won't ever do that shit again! TAKE CARE
hey heidi, couple of blocks from my house the kids were protesting for less school hours, video taken from the american embassy on museum square amsterdam.
Ok, I've had enough of winter already. It was -26c this morning while driving to work.
SKgirl, good sundog pic. I'm waiting for some low -30s for ice fog pics. There is nothing more pure looking than hoar frost.
We had a nice burst of snow along the cold front here in MI, and now we have gusts over 40 mph!
I can't wait to get back to OK and get out of this cold...and a possible ice storm over the weekend!
Cors is back!!!!
The Storms of 2007 DVD is going be premiered 7pm Friday at the NWC for anyone around the Norman area. The DVD is also gonna be on sale for $20.
CORS!!! That's hilarious! I guess that guy driving the water cannon truck has never tried to herd sheep before. He got a little out of control!

looks worse then it has been here. We just got our first decent snowfall yesterday it was really late coming here in Alberta Canada.
Hello Again, If any thing crazy happens in Maine, I'll send some pics or video.
We have been getting a lot of "Micro Burst" the last few years. The damage trail left by them looks similar to a tornadoes'. A straight line wind we call em here.
