News DetailSnowstorm likely tonight for Great Lakes Region! Severe weather possible over AR this afternoon!

A snowstorm will be likely from the northern MS River Valley through the Great Lakes Region this evening through Thanksgiving Day, as a low pressure center gradually strengthens along a strong baroclinic zone stretching across the central U.S. 3-6 inches of snow will be common, especially across southern WI, southern and central MI, and southeast Ontario by Thursday afternoon. The national radar loop from Wednesday afternoon is shown below, with the deformation zone (wrap-around) precip clearly evident across Iowa.

Loops of WRF forecast MSLP and surface temperature from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning are provided below, with the surface baroclinic zone clearly evident from Michigan southwest to Oklahoma. Cyclogenesis is currently underway across the Southern Plains, with a slowly strengthening low pressure system moving from Northeast OK into MO at this time. As an upper-level trough impinges on the Plains, this low-pressure system will intensify and move northeastward towards the Ohio Valley by tonight. As the cold front continues to move southward, the rain currently over the Great Lakes Region will change over to snow by this evening. Given slantwise convective instability in place, there will be substantial mesoscale banding within the deformation zone precipitation, thus some locations will receive heavy snow tonight across southern WI, central MI, and southeast Ontario.

Based on the WRF forecast precip for Thursday night, a broad area of 3-6 inches will fall across most of the central and northern Great Lakes Region, with the higher amounts falling where mesoscale bands can remain over the same areas. I'm currently located in Grand Rapids, MI, where a snow advisory is in effect tonight. I'll be documenting this event from start to finish, and will post video updates as the heavy snow commences. Stay tuned for updates!

Severe weather and even isolated tornadoes will be possible over the warm sector in eastern AR this afternoon/evening, despite rather limited instability. Shown below are the WRF forecast CAPE and 850 mb flow valid at 00z this evening. As can be seen below, a strong low-level jet will be in place across the entire warm sector, with 30+ knots superimposed in an uncapped environment. The only limiting factor will be marginal instability, with surface-based CAPE values of <750 J/kg from the Gulf Coast north to eastern AR.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued an MD for most of Arkansas, as surface-based convective initiation is expected soon! Stay tuned for updates on the developing severe weather situation as well! A lot of meteorology today.

Ahhh, here we go, a fresh blog post. Thanks guys!
Well, you've got the cold part right. It's hovering around 40 here at the GCK, with a wind chill somewhere below freezing. Should be an interesting weather day...
Cool guys, hope it all turns good for you all whoever is predicted snow...
46 f here now with slight cloud cover.
I think Heidi is in for the most interesting day of all... she's in the probability for severe today. Lucky duck... lol
Hey Guys line of storms developing and heading my way! here is what it looks like on radar
http://wlex.images.worldnow.com/images/incoming/weather_satellite.html
Right guys im off for a bit just going to get my tea, back later see ya!
i can attest to the instability reed- theres been breaks n the clouds- and dewpoints are in the mid 60s- to be very specific - 66 degree dewpoint and temperature of 74
And last thing, if it is what im thinking it is Caleb, i was right lol it is heading towards KY lol i said that in the last blog lol see ya!
that was the reading for jacksonville ar. i mean lol sorry
How about that Caleb... you might get a little thunder with your flurries. lol. Donny, it's hugely unstable over here. Winds have changed direction quite a few times; my anemometer is going nuts.
Be back later guys!
Looking at Satelitte images it looks very cloud over the slight risk area.
it has been matt- but theres been a few breaks in the clouds-if i had to make a guess- the biggest breakin clouds we got- there was still about 90 percent cloud cover
Donny can you tell me what this is?^^^
BTW the 00z mods still look good
all i see is 3 triangles caleb unless im missing something- i know im still kinda tired and have a headach
There snow devils i think. Basicly the same as dust but its snow.
Well.. Tim MN you were right about the holiday snow going south of us!!
AJ: My grandma was addicted hard to Dr.Mario!! She had a few other games she played almost non stop!! She bought us all our own Nintendo's and She probably went through 5 or 6 herself!! After she passed I went through the old ones and saved two that worked fine!! She would leave the thing turned on for days on end!! She was also the Duck Hunt Champ!! oh yeah And The Black Bass!!
It's nice to hear from ya again Andrew!! I knew it was just seasonal!! Hope you and your family have a good Thanksgiving!! Too bad Joe doesn't come back!!
Donny click my name up there
Right now, north-central AR is also experiencing the on and off cloud breaks Donny mentioned. Temps have risen into the mid-70s with dewpoints in the mid-60s. I just returned from trying to get some photos of the line of storms that has formed in south-central MO, but the cloudcover made photos impossible. I was able to see the storms strengthening, but they're training from SW to NE, so those storms will not affect us. However, there is a similar line forming SW of here, in west-central AR that will probably reach us in a few hours. I just checked a few models, and there are isolated pockets of higher CAPE and helicity, so things could get kind of interesting. I think the best chances will be east of here, in NE AR near the MO bootheel later on.
We're about to leave to take the truck to the garage, but I'm taking the camera and weather radio with us. I'm thinking a tornado watch will probably be issued while we're gone ... but maybe not for our county - I expect the watch box to possibly begin at the Black River and include the counties east of there... but maybe not, given the current conditions and those isolated higher CAPE areas???
Hey guys, im back
appy now cause we have the possibility for snow on friday!! the met office said that the temps will drop dramatically and as the night goes on we may get some snow :)
sorry caleb lol it looks liek a dustdevil that is snow- and the tornado watch just did issued for us heidi i got my phone and camcorder ready woohoooo
Here's a lil vid of our current conditions!! It's a beautiful day here!!
http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z285/shadetree6981/Nov%2021st%202007/?action=view¤t=100_2981.flv
WOW THATS ABOUT 50 MILES FROM ME THAT LINE IS COMEING TO ME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Go get em Donny!! Good luck with that watch!!! I would be just excited if I was down there!!
Woohoo Donny! Good luck. Do you mind sending some storms to Kansas, me and several others would appreciate it... ;) lol.
It is a beautiful day there Brady! The sun finally came out here, but it's still the same temp as earlier, with clouds burning off.
sweet Brady....looks as if the snow could build up for you....
They forecast doesn't say for much snow!! looking at GR it's coming right off of the Lake!! I love the big flakes!! It's coming down much harder than in the vid now!!
i am brady- theres lots of good inbound/outbound couplets that need to be tornado warned though
Once again for anybody that cares
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff207/ontariostormchaser/Tornadovideosnetracecar.jpg
Nice one, snows great lol....you say its coming off the lake, you dont suppose it could be lake enhanced snow?? i dont know lol
Oh it sure is Tim!! It's beautiful!! Usually lake effect or lake enhanced brings big flakes!!
Cool....im sure Reed would like to know about that then if he doesn't already..... that should sure cover the ground for you if the flakes are big enough and it snows for long enough :)
Im hoping that it snowriday now, i was looking at the temps earlier and telling AJ about it but we then decided that we would both have to wait till the usuall time of january, then i watched the weather by the Met office and they said the conditions are gret for snow lol :)
You can kinda see the lake effect in the first image on this blog!! you can really see it on GR! I took another vid about 15minutes ago!! I'm just waiting for my crappy internet to upload it!!
I guess the NWS and Tim's Met Office are on their toes trying to figure out what this system will do... the forecasts are changing regularly.
Donny where is that circulation you're referring to?
Yeh i was just looking at that top image on the blog, and ok i will check it out on gr3, gives me a reason to open it lol
any one know why the OWS was posting nasty comments?
aj- theres one circulation southwest of clinton- and theres one 11 miles west of perryville and theres one right on the sevier/little river county lines
Caleb, it was just one guy, and he was jealous, because of the Manitoba tornado.
(I feel dumb for asking this) Donny, what state? lol.
dont feal to bad aj- but there in arkansas
I'm just gonna follow tv.net policy!!
The lake effect isn't as strong as it was in MI a few weeks back!! but it's still noticeable today!! It's gonna stop soon I think!! Kinda cool how everything here is moving SW while everything else is pushing NE!!
Nevermind, I see it. lol. I'm kinda blind today, give me time ;)
I cant really see it on gr Brady, what am i suppose to be looking at? and another thi dont know....
What's the inbound and outbound markers on those Donny? I see that they're fairly strong, but...
This storm to the north of where Donny and I are looking has almost 2" hail with it.

Nice video Brady,..... that place got coverd and fast lol...and nice dog btw
fairly strong but what aj? i know that theres till going fairly strong- and will probably gain intensity when they reach the unstable air where i love
Hey everyone just got a good snow band come through bringing a nice dusting of snow to the area. Got some good video of the snow, just sent it to the local news. Pretty good for what i was expecting.
Michael, you lucky duck. ;) We just got flurries with no accumulation in the western part of the state.
I was just wondering how strong they were exactly Donny, and pondering how long they'll last.
i meant live not love lol im sorry
hehe!! TY Tim!! Hey Michael!! nice to hear from ya again!! I think you guys do a great job!!

Aaww, dangit! As much as I hate to leave, I must. Be back later!
sweet severe weather, hope no one gets hurt though!
i know i jsut called my friend that lives close to there aj there in a rural area and they have no sirens- except for when i call them and tell em what i see on radar- and i make a judgement call on confirmation untill i can get something from the nws
see ya AJ! have a good one, well England are loosing in the football 2-0 in the first 15 min against croatia :(
hahaha. Nice job whoever's running the TV.net site! You can delete my last comment too if you feel so inclined.
Man, I am so late for work...
Wow coments are disapearing lol
still tornado warnings out, here however just at 46 f still!! its been that way for the past 3 hours lol oh well
Hey were is my last comment?
Storms in se MO and sw AR look interesting...although it may be just because their far from the radar.
A super-typhoon may also threaten the Philippines. I wonder if James R will be heading after this one?
Congrats on the snow Michael! We're down to 39 at my house now, so maybe about 5 more degrees and we'll have a changeover. Some sleet has been mixing in down in southwest MI.
Just try and keep to the subject Caleb...which is weather.
ITS OFFICAL -
DFW IS GETTING SLEET/SNOW TOMMOROW NIGHT - !!!!!
Yeah sure Reed Ok there is 1 storm report.... BTW I HATE OWS
The snow is done here!! nice lil covering!! still only 27 here!!
Cool Brady....still pretty cool there then.... enough for a snow ball fight there then lol :P
Hay brady you were makeing videos right? could you make another one and say my name?
Hey, Just thought i should leave a comment and say i think the site is great and that you all do a great job.
wooooooooohoooooooooooooooo so far i have 3 nice t-head pictures including this nice updraft east of pulaski county- i'll be posting later- i have to keep an eye on my radar lol also going to try to make a video to where its not so blurry as last time
Thanks for the update Donny!
Looks like you'll be getting some action at your place.
Must be nice!
wow a lot of svr t-storm warnings out im going to choose one lol and keep an eye on it..... i choose the AR, Clarke storm lol :P but that looks to be a squall line lol
System snow is staying south Brady, but good old Lake Superior contributed a bit, nice to see. I guess the 850 mb winds veered NE to cause that Southshore snowband to shift west, at least the ground is white and not that ugly BROWN color..
PULASKIE CO i live about 30 min fron there.... is pulaskie co KY? hi jacko
Reed the cell southwest of shreveport looks tornadic
Yeah!! It looks nice here in Hermantown!! Ya say it looks the same down the hill!! That's cool!! Maybe we will have a white Christmas this year!! hehe I made a lil vid if ya didn't see!! it's just up the blog a lil!!
Nothing exciting in Ohio except for some heavy rain and some serious winds to about 30mph. Suppose to have some flurries tomorrow and dropping to 40 after a high of 70 earlier. Happy Holidays and safe travel.
Actually, I didn't have to work today... only on weekends ;)
It does look kinda tornadic... unless I'm going blind again... lol
ohh yeah reed its very exciting seeing as how there intensifing where there getting in my area- normally they piddle out and then re-fire east of my area
Hey Caleb..... how are you? This seems like a great site, thanks for giving me the link.....
I'm kinda lost, where's everyone looking at now??
I just switched to Little Rock AJ!!
which state is shevreport in?? im trying to sind it but i cant lol..... I like the lookof some of these storms, they seem to be coming along quiet nicely.....
Hey AJ thats lucky then lol ...
They're looking at Shreveport, Texas. It's pretty strong rotation... Little Rock is getting hammered! I'm switching back and forth between the two stations.
There's a nice meso on the Shreveport cell. It's south of Hallsville, and north of Easton.
I hope Heidi can score something with this!! too bad I didn't live down there, I coulda saved her a few bucks and scanned her truck to see what was wrong!! probably just an o2 sensor!!
Well, there WAS a meso there... lol
Thanks AJ, that loos string yeh....
cool vid Brady! Yea those ol lake effect snow flakes are gigantic, it's like air dropping from the sky..very cool, plus it accumulates very quickly!
sorry, last post was suppose to say ..... thanks AJ, yeh that looks strong...
I find this hole in the storm interesting...
http://i5.tinypic.com/6t3ao9e.png
Jacko i'm good but they banned me
hey guys, sorry to interrupt, but does anyone know if I should expect anything out here in TN?
I've been watching it and it looks sweet so far, but I'm not sure if it will continue to grow, or die out before it gets here.
Here is a radar loop of that Cell
http://www.ktbs.com/content_blocks/inc_radar_loop.cfm?image=http://a759.g.akamai.net/f/759/27506/5m/ktbs.download.akamai.com/27506/Weather/current_image.jpg
Caleb, please quit mentioning them. That's not the subject right now.
These are some pretty good storms considering the time of year... I want some over here. lol.
Gotta go guys, be back later!
o i see Caleb, but comon id leave it now you have been told to drop it so just forgt it yeh, from what i see this seems to be the nicer place anyway so be thankful you know people here.....
Yeah I just got to leave it..... MASIVE LINE OF STORMS
Just some real light flurries here that aren't covering the ground. Nice video Brady.
Heidi I hope you get to see some storms today :)
15 svr storms out now.....yeh i agree AJ, fr this late in the year very surprising.....
This is better than 2004.... gotta go guys
AH man im on edges at the oment.....England have leveled it at 2-2 now so that means we will make the european chapionships if the score stays like this....and there is 20 minuets left aukwgdilawgvf,jk
And to top it all off there is a lot of storms breaking out!!
noooooooooooo croatia have scored which means we could go out now eosr;ighw;ouhbafpwnef :(:(:(
Just in case anyone is in a race for the coldest, Winnipeg has a forecast low of -19C or -2F
Oh yeah and we had lake effect snow for most of the day. Same as you Brady... the big dry flakes with no weight to them.
Well, I am officially in a grouchy mood, because I was sitting at the Dodge dealership while there were towers going up all over the daggone place (YES, I SAID DAGGONE!!!!) and I could see what I now know were tornado-warned cells in MO, and didn't even know that we were in a tornado watch yet until I got home, just a few minutes ago. The stupid radio stations here didn't even mention the fact, and my weather radio refused to receive a decipherable signal. ... THEN, I had to go to the store, and guess what happened while I was in there for 5 minutes?! The front came through with a HUGE downpour & 30+ MPH winds, and brought the temp down 20 degrees.
Oh, and I got some crappy crappy crappy photos of the MO storms, but they are, um, crappy because I had to take them from the parking lot of the Dodge dealership.
Can I have a do-over? Like, lets re-schedule that engine-light appointment!!!!!!
Jacob, if you're west of Nashville, I think you have a pretty good chance of seeing some severe action today/this evening.
Hey guys! woo hoo! severe weather event! ..though were I am it's 25F and we've been getting snow all day....lake effect I think. so far an accumulation of 2-3" on top of ice....i almost fell like 15 times outside.
Actually, I'm not really surprised by this severe weather event. From what I recall reading, there's usually one severe weather episode in November. I guess this is the one huh?
Jon
I think Memphis is having problems with its radar. Anyone else having trouble with their site?
Hey Heidi!! I really bad for ya!! I was watching that line and hoping the dealership wasn't gonna screw ya over which I'm sure they did!! I would recommend purchasing an OBD2 scan tool or even just a code reader!! could save ya tons of time and $$ in the long run!
Excelent! I'm well west of Nashville, in Humphres county.
yeah, I remeber 2005 was the year I got interested in weather, we had a weak F1 hit our house, I remeber looking at the grass where it had been twisted by the vortecies.
Heidi..Memphis radar is down. Here is what it says about this error:
KNQA: WSR-88D KNQA IS INOPERABLE.
TECHNICIANS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED. TIME OF
RETURN TO SERVICE REMAINS UNKNOWN.
SURROUNDING RADARS INCLUDE:
KGWX...KLZK...KDGX...KPAH...KHTX...KBMK.
I'll tell my husband about that Brady. They said it was some oxygen sensor thing ... :-/ Anyone ever notice how all of those "little" things cost the same amount? I think there must be some kind of catalog that has tons of little things designed to go wrong that all cost $100 + labor.
My GR isn't working right? Anyone else having that issue?
Thanks Jon. LZK isn't working either. Grrrrreat....
OH NO!! I called that one!! Read up a lil!! That's a fix that could wait a day or two no prob!! and a 20 minute fix if that!!
I'm sorry Heidi!! 4:17 ^^
Ok right now i am anoyed ....we are out i know its off the subject of weather but football is my hobbie and to see my country loose its bad, especially to croatia and russia who both went through.....
Why are all these radars going down then??
Having that radar off sucks not only for us, but Memphis TN as well.
If I'm reading the MD properly, that is exactly where they don't want a cell to go up.
No problem Heidi. btw, LZK is working for me...seems like you got a program issue. I've had that happen many times with me before. It usually starts working after a little while....sometimes a few hours :(.
The only way I got that radar down info was from a placefile I have in GR3. I dont remember where I got it from..but I did get it from somebody mentioning it here in a previous post.
lol code # 777
interesting heidi- my storm lab weather radar isn't having no problems with lzk- we just had a few big tree limbs downed here at my house- but im not going to bother reporting it simply because everytime i do try to report damage- they never show on the storm prediction center storm reports- i made 2 films- one of them got shortened cause the lightning was goetting close- there was some minor rotation with the storm that just hit jacksonville
HAHAHA Brady, I actually did see that post @ 4:17 but I was skimming so fast that I missed the o2 censor part! That's hilarious! :D Next time I'm driving it to Duluth! :D
Yeah, my GR is back now, except for Memphis. Thanks for the input though, Jon!
I bet Donny just had a nice round of stuff in Jacksonville. It's probably 55 degrees there now. It's down below 50 here now.
KLZK is working for me!! I think it had a lil twitch! but it's running fine!!
there are a couple of meso's out in the cell over shreveport...... seems to be looking good aswell....
I need to start hitting "refresh" before I make my posts. That way I won't talk about Donny as if he wasn't there already! :P
Hey guys i'm back turn it on TWC Dr. greg forbs is gonna talk about it
I think it listed the surround radars to say use one of these!!
The cells to the south of Shreveport or showing the most promise in that area Tim. Lots of meso tags and they are east of the main line.
Radar site is KPOE
sure did heidi- wondering why this isn't being tornado warned or have a severe t-storm warning on it:
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc106/Tornadomaster22/grantcountycomposite.jpg
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc106/Tornadomaster22/grantcountyrotation.jpg
I see that too now Strike. looks to be a few cells of promise...i see one West of Colfax with a good inflow notch.
That's the cell I've been watching for the last 10min!! Pine Bluff Watch out!!
Strike, did you see the temps in northern SK and MB this morning?
Nipawin, SK -31C
Thompson,MB -28C
The Pas,MB -25C
Still dang chilly in most places.
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forecast/canada/summary_e.html?SK&unit=m
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forecast/canada/summary_e.html?MB&unit=m
Hope you got your woolies on :)
WHAT? -31? Not ready for that. There is still green grass here. It's frozen solid, but its green.
Hey, anyone down south need a roommate until april?
no kidding brady looks liek the meso itself is going to be over pine bluff they should issue a warning for it
Strike..you're from Winnipeg, right? Didn't u get some snow too? or was it localized?
Anyway guys i gotta go....i hate the time difrence sometimes...
hope the rest of the night goes well for you all see ya!!
and also i like the look of the cell in front of the shevraport system.....
I just got in from installing the snow tires on our two cars. I live in Southern Ontario, 30 minutes NNW of Toronto, and they are forecasting between 10 and 30 cms of snow for the area.
I live just north of Matt. Hi Matt!
(Rain has been falling for hours and is just switching over to ice pellets. Temperature is around 2 deg C.)
Take a look at this GFS surface temp map for Dec.1
http://i18.tinypic.com/6z7tf1c.gif
Not looking forward to that!
Ok, I dont think they really are sure what is going to happen with this system thats affecting the Upper Mississippi river valley, with the snow and ice. I was checking areas west of here out this morning(around 8:30) on the IA/IL border, and they were saying less than 1 inch accumulation, now some of those same cities are forecasting 3-6 inches. I realize winter weather is very hard to predict, but you would think they would have a better grip/idea on it instead of deciding to change it between 2-3p.m.
I am currently in Morton IL, and the temperature is 38.4 degrees fahrenheit, with some kind of precipitation falling, looking at in in the light it appears to be very small snow flakes, or sleet, but when i step outside into it, it doesnt feel like sleet or snow, but it deffinitly isnt rain...so i'm going to say its slushing out. Haha, but does anyone understand what i am talking about?
Wow, Impressive PB....
Is that for December 1st of this year?
Yes I do Ben... Winter weather is very hard to predict, becuase moisture and temperatures are critical in terms of what kind of precip you'll see, or how much will fall and/or accumulate. Sometimes If you see rain firs then snow, that can also effect how much you will see.
Ya it is Zack
Then I'm ready for it Matt. I think this is the setup for the potential snowstorm in the next 10 days here, that I was looking at the other day.
Guys I gotta go, got earings to run.. See you guys tomorrow!!
Snowstorm? Sorry, I've been out running errands, so I've missed a few things...
here is the prepication map for that same day
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff207/ontariostormchaser/gfsUS_0_prec_240.gif
Anyways im going to continue with painting this car im doing so ill probably be out for a while.
Hello? Anyone home? lol.
I am, I have nothing better to do except sit here and watch the storms come to me ;P
A tornado warning!!!

In case anyone is interested, I just ran the loop of the tornado warned storm in MS and it seemed to take a sweeping right turn just before being warned. Also has lots of rotation.
You and me both Donny, you and me both. How'd those storms in your neck of the woods turn out?
Huh... I see what you mean Strike. It has pretty good shear too... you think there's a tube on the ground yet?
