The low-lying Mexican state of Tabasco, which lies on the Gulf of Mexico Coast to the west of the Yucatan Peninsula, is currently being slammed by catastrophic floods caused by very heavy rains last week.  70% of the state, and 80% of the capital city, Villahermo, are under water as rivers in the region have flooded their banks, resulting in one of the worst natural disasters in history for Mexico.  Here is video from Reuters:

There's a Mexican state called Tabasco?! Awesome! I love that stuff! lol. Actually, it's not very funny, because that's some horrible flooding.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By AJ | November 2, 2007 @ 1:25 PM #

Let's see.... the most exciting thing going on in my neck of the woods today is the wind. The anemometer on the side of my house might just lift off and fly away. 42+ mph wind gusts out here in SW Kansas.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Cors | November 2, 2007 @ 1:27 PM #

yea it a very large part that is affected. my comment didnt get through on the other post but I didnt know they used your footage on stormchasers Reed?! nice!

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Will kucharek | November 2, 2007 @ 1:36 PM #

That is pretty sad for the people. The name itself is funny though. You live in Kansas AJ? What part? I have a family member that lives in Rolla, KS. Also I had an Aunt, and cousins that lives in Keys, OK where that tornado touched down.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By AJ | November 2, 2007 @ 1:44 PM #

Hey there Will. I live in Garden City, which is pretty close to Rolla if I remember right... I also kind of know where Keys, OK is. Refresh my memory?

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Kim | November 2, 2007 @ 2:18 PM #

That is some awful flooding! Its a shame, the states that need the rain cannot get it! And Cors....I have seen a few scenes from the show that are TV.NETS! Awesome!

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Will kucharek | November 2, 2007 @ 2:45 PM #

Hmm where is Keys? Well it is a hole in the wall type of town. It might have a couple hundred people. It has been a while since i traveled there. I remember when I was visiting a cousin in Elkhart KS it was like 45 minutes from there I think going west, but nto 100% sure.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Will kucharek | November 2, 2007 @ 2:48 PM #

AJ, have you ever been to Elkhart KS, or Hugoton KS? I had family live their for many years. One time about 4 years ago my cousin met me in Lamar CO to pick me up and go back to Hugoton KS. On the way there it was thundering, Lightning, Hailing. But it was pitch dark at like 11:00pm at night. The only time we could see anything was when the lightning would strike wich was almost constant. I truly believe that there was a tornado around us somewhere. When we got back to his house his wife and daughter were wating and they said that there had been a Torbado warning for the area we had just came though. Not sure if there was one reported to have touched down though. Damn I am long winded. I will try to cut my posts down in size. Sorry guys

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Zack | November 2, 2007 @ 3:22 PM #

Tabasco Mexico??? I love that stuff...
Sorry, I really shouldn't be making humorous remarks. Thats some terrible flooding!!!!!

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Will kucharek | November 2, 2007 @ 3:27 PM #

You are right Zack! But the name of the town being funny doesn't have anything to do with the devastation of the flooding either ya know? I think we all pretty much laughed at the name, but also felt bad for the people that were in the town. Where are you from Zack? I'm from Pueblo, CO which is about a little over an hour from Denver, CO. I am into storm chasing as well. take care man

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Matt | November 2, 2007 @ 3:43 PM #

the name might be funny but what happened out there is not funny and i think that that should take center stage. Because how would you feel if your area was flooded to crap and people were making fun of the name of your town. You wouldnt to so happy.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Will kucharek | November 2, 2007 @ 4:02 PM #

You are taking what i said out of context. I think I made it real clear that the flooding comes first. I think it is aweful what natural disasters do. But most people in here also love watching the film that Reed and his team capture on film, yet there is plenty of distruction that occurs there. Yet does that mean we can't enjoy none of the films that shows a House being demolished, or going through a city. Of course not, there is CLEARLY a difference! If bashing people for taking interest in something that does so much damage makes us bad people, then I guess Most of the people that enjoy Tornadovideos.net are bad people now? C'mon

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Matt | November 2, 2007 @ 4:16 PM #

Im not the hugest fan of the destruction part. But thats your opinion dude and Im cool with it. I love tornadoes but that stuff get to me.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 2, 2007 @ 4:18 PM #

I really don't know what to make of the show!! I finally watched all 3 episodes and like I said... I can't talk bad cuz I'm just a peon in the storm world, but I like your comment in the last blog Larry from Outlaw chasers!! It ended up in the middle if you didn't know!! The show seems to me to say that these guys are the best and everyone else out there are just runners up!! I don't like that at all!! They have me a lil confused with their facts too!! I just don't wanna seee this show give people the wrong ideas of what chasing is about!!

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Will kucharek | November 2, 2007 @ 4:23 PM #

I agree Brady. I watched all 3 episodes so far, and even though I like it..Because I am into anything that has to do with storm chasing.. but you are right. I think they have this better than everyone else attitude.

As for you Matt, Thanks. I aprriciate you voicing your opinion as well man. I just didn't want you getting the wrong impression from what I said. I hate the devastation as well. I like the beauty of the twister and the forming of it from the original storm. If i had my way, they would all be on open fields where not even a cow got hurt! :) I mean that

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Matt | November 2, 2007 @ 4:34 PM #

Im not sure if this really has anything to do with what Brady and Will are talking about Josh being better then anybody else. I dont see storm chasing as a competition. i dont think anybody is better then anybody else.

Will: Im the same if i had it my way they would be in open fields and nothing is affected by it.

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 2, 2007 @ 4:49 PM #

I just like my weather pics and vid to be honest!! I don't even wanna enhance anything without stating that it is!! Like my questionable pics!! I aint claiming nothing That's just what the camera captured!! But my game plan is way different than the show!! I'm on the hunt for my first!! I don't care if it's a wedge or just a lil tube that dies!! Just as long as I can share it later!! And as long as I can take a pic or two of some clouds or get a lil vid of some wind or lightning I consider it success!!

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Brady MN | November 2, 2007 @ 4:52 PM #

I think my dream tornado would be a nice black lil wedge tearing up some rottin swamp just north of here or a beautiful elevated hose right over the lake!!

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Matt | November 2, 2007 @ 4:54 PM #

I have a questionable pic that im not sure about either. ive showed you guys this picture before but i thought it was a wall cloud but i was probably wrong. Anyways heres the link for that picture.

A few notes about the flooding, from CNN:

Story Highlights -

*Weeklong heavy rain overflows rivers, flooding 80 percent of Tabasco state (Tabsaco is the *state*; Villahermosa is the capital of Tabasco)

*Health officials warn against epidemics of cholera, other diseases (such as hepatitis)

* Flooding has affected more than 900,000 people in the state of 2 million - their homes flooded, damaged or cut off by high water

* President Felipe Calderon called the flooding in Tabasco state one of Mexico's worst recent natural disasters. "This is not just the worst natural catastrophe in the state's history but, I would venture to say, one of the worst in the recent history of the country," Calderon said Friday during an emergency meeting with state officials in Villahermosa.

* Tens of thousands of people are still stranded on rooftops or in the upper floors of their homes

Somehow, this is not one of CNN's top stories, and is viewable only after clicking on "World" under the CNN banner. :-/

Brady, what is Lake effect machine? I seen photos of Lake effect now like On a lake or something, but not sure excatly what you are talking about. Thanks

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Strike | November 3, 2007 @ 10:55 AM #

Brady, we are forecast to get a couple of cm's of snow tomorrow and I suspect that machine might be working here as soon as we get north winds.

This time of year a forecast can go horribly wrong if lake effect happens. As you well know.

Good luck on your snow event Kenny

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Strike | November 3, 2007 @ 11:54 AM #

I think it was about 4 years ago, I was at a place called Grand Beach (on Lake Winnipeg) and it was drifted around 9 feet high. Obviously the wind had something to do with it, but I'd guess at least 3-4 feet fell in a fairly narrow band. It can get real crazy around the big lakes, but I'm in the City of Winnipeg, so not so much here. I have a new cottage building lot on Lake Winnipeg, so I'm sure I will have some real interesting stuff to post in the next couple of years.

insane upper level winds up at 250-300mb valid for 0z tonight in south western alberta...up to at least 130 knots!
places like ft mcloed, pincher creek and lethbridge are expected to get wind gusts up to 110 kms/h...some snow is expected in the foothills, but nothing intensely accumlated since this system will be flying by...

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By brandon | November 3, 2007 @ 2:09 PM #

also, nova scotia is preparing for post tropical storm noel, which is expected to strike overnight. news reports are saying major power outages are expected, high surf, high winds and stores like canadian tire are being cleared of supplies. seems like people are preparing, which is good, most likely since hurricane hurricane juan came ahore there a few years back...

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By PB | November 3, 2007 @ 2:22 PM #

Got your snow booties unpacked brandon? :)

I've been googling "Dendritic crystal growth"

From the secret weather forecast:

"WITH A SATURATED COLUMN IN THE -10 TO -20C
RANGE MAXIMIZING DENDRITIC CRYSTAL GROWTH, WE CAN EXPECT SOME BOUTS
OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL NORTH OF THE TRACK OF THE LOW.
THE TRACK OF THE LOW, THOUGH, IS STILL EXTREMELY UNCERTAIN. WITH THE
SPEED OF THE SYSTEM, ANY ONE POINT IS NOT EXPECTED TO RECEIVE WARNING
AMOUNTS OF SNOW. THUS, SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS ARE IN EFFECT. "

I want a huge dump of crystals. NOW.

Hey PB, are you in the area of heavy snow? I'm just waiting until it starts to snow.. Then I'm gunna head out and play around in it haha. I'll probably get some video of it, my flash sucks and ruins all the pictures so...Unless it starts when its light out, I wont be taking pictures. I'm about to do a map of snowfall so, check out my site in about 20 min and click winter storm fcst center and you'll see the map!

I have family in the Bangor, ME area, and they have been getting POUNDED by wind and rain for the last 10+ hrs. Temps are about 40 degrees, with sustained winds at around 30 MPH! I just took a look on GR3 and it looks like the heaviest of the rain will fall overnight and continue into tomorrow. (All of this is of course from Noel, and as Matt (in Ontario) mentioned a few times earlier in the week, it's eventually headed toward the Canadian-Atlantic provinces.)

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Heidi | November 3, 2007 @ 11:09 PM #

I just wanted to mention that Caleb has put together a pretty nice summary of the Evansville tornado of 11/05/05 on his site (click his name to check it out). I remember that one pretty well, because the storm that eventually produced the tornado formed not too far west of me, and I remember the extreme lightning - it was like a strobe light - unlike anything I had ever seen (except, of course, a strobe light! ;-)

Hey Reed, I was wondering, this guy who build the tiv has this turret on top of his craft. I just dont really get why he use an imax camera BEHIND WINDOWS. I mean I dunno much about cameras but videotaping through a window doesnt look like a smart move to me....although I did it once,,,(because I was kinda scared touching the frame of my window to keep it open...)

Catastrophic flooding in Tabasco, Mexico! Comment Posted By Kenny | November 4, 2007 @ 1:19 AM #

Haha Cors! Hurricane's are more deadly because tornadoes are just wind/lightning. Hurricane's are Rain, wind, lightning and also have the potential to developpe tornadoes or waterspouts. IMO hurricane's are more deadly. Typhoons are worse though.

you know kenny the most insane news event ever for me was Katrina, I was listening to WWL radio for about a week. it was so strange listening cause they didnt realize the were world wide streaming. Imagine having sports hosts suddenly becoming disaster news anchors. I remember in the early days after katrina they were still broadcasting from N.O. last thing they said was; ...oh and now the building next to us is on fire,,,that doesnt mean people are burning down building.
after that they got airlifted to batton rouge...but it just got crazier every day....
