Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California!

Wildfires continue to rage across parts of Southern California Tuesday, from the Mexico Border to north of Los Angeles.  More than 500,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in San Diego County alone!  The 3 fires north of Los Angeles may combine into one massive wildfire today, threatening 56,000 homes in the area, as strong Santa Ana winds continue across the region.  The satellite image below shows the fires well, with a few small fires as far south as the central Baja Peninsula.

Here is a link to the best live feed from Southern California, courtesy of Cors:

http://media.myfoxla.com/live/

The 850 mb RUC analysis from this afternoon over the Southwest U.S. shows the textbook Santa Ana wind pattern, with strong easterly flow over Arizona, Southern California, and northwest Mexico south of a strong anticyclone over the Great Basin.  The easterly winds become particularly strong at the surface as they are funneled through valleys and mountain passes in Southern California, and the air warms and dries due to compression as air parcels descend towards sea level.   The result is an environment favorable for uncontrollable and unpredictable wildfires over highly populated Southern California.

I`ll take severe weather season any day over that. Tragic to see that much damage from wild fires with so many homes and businesses lost.

the thing is there is no rain in the near future to help these fires so that they will go out.

Cool deal. Doesn't sound like too bad a job eh? haha. The only way to make it better for me is if I was doing a demo of new four-wheelers or something ;)

Haha Hey Brady! I'm still waitin on that snow..They changed the date AGAIN, now they say its going to snow on the 6th...I think they should stick with a weekly forecast other then 14 day trend. I mean if they can barely predict one day ahead of the day it currently is, they should really start doing something...I'd fire them if I was the boss.

Anyway on my site I have the Winter Storm forecast map out, what it's going to look like! Just go to Winter Strm fcst cntr.

Hehe!! It was crappy, cold and a lil wet today! windy as hell too! As you all can see the clouds started looking cool so I grabbed the cam and went for a lil ride!! It's clear now!! Brrr!! Now it's 42 here!! =(

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 23, 2007 @ 9:00 PM #

Speaking of TWC music, they were playing The Thrill Is Gone the other night!! That's a lil better than the elevator music!! hehe

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Heidi | October 23, 2007 @ 9:09 PM #

AJ, are you serious about TWC music?!?!!! Sounds like a possible instrument of torture to me!!! :D

Oh, alright. I've said it before & I guess I'll say it again: That weather graphic music makes me want to BUST A MOVE!!!!!!!!! :D

They're talkin about fire tornados on the ABC fire special right now.

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By AJ | October 23, 2007 @ 9:23 PM #

Maybe I"m stickin around a little longer... hehe ;)

They play The Allman Bros and Pink Floyd every now and then, to keep my interest. lol

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Heidi | October 23, 2007 @ 9:31 PM #

NO WAY!!! Geez, you can tell how long it's been since I've seen TWC, really. Like 5 years, just about! I was thinking they still use that kind of stuff like MSNBC weather (or whatevertheheck it is) uses ... you know, like when we all go watch the same live-stream and they go off the air and put on the music with the scrolling graphics?? That's what I was thinking of. I guess I'm pretty last-century! :D

They ought to get Floyd's early stuff on there! That would probably cause some problems for some people! :D

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By AJ | October 23, 2007 @ 9:36 PM #

I think some people would go into shock if their forecast was set to "Ummagumma". lol.

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 23, 2007 @ 9:36 PM #

Yes It probably would Heidi!! lol I could hear the weather channel playing classical gas!! Or That's just the way it is!! hehe I haven't actually watched TWC since I got internet!! Just a lil last week or so!!

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By AJ | October 23, 2007 @ 9:40 PM #

I"m that person that wakes up, turns on TWC, takes a shower, comes out, and argues with what they're saying for the forecast. lol. Never on a chase day have I used them.

Stephanie Abrams is hot though.... ;)

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Heidi | October 23, 2007 @ 9:45 PM #

AJ!!! That would probably go something like, Colors!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Colors! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
I was thinking more along the lines of:
I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like.
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

:D

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 23, 2007 @ 9:46 PM #

I'm not much for forecasting my self, but I mocked the dumb chick on the radio last Thursday when she gave her useless forecast!! I was like BS!! I was right and she wasn't!! lol

Hey
Yesterday I changed my cars tires to snow/winter tires.

I found a "new" May 3rd 1999 Tornado video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ynHED4QWt5g

I hope the situation in CA eases as fast as possible, it's disastrous, I hate these fires as well as tsunamis.

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Reed | October 24, 2007 @ 10:11 AM #

Nice video Volker! Definitely brings back memories.

Do you know if anything happened in Greece the other day?

I don't recall seeing any reports on estofex.org

haha a "fire-nado" leave it up to the media to come up with another ridiculous made up term! http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/weather/2007/10/24/lklv.firenado.cnn anyway i wish we would have some weather that could possibly produce the other kind of nado around here(and no not a gustnado)

Wildfires continue to rage in Southern California! Comment Posted By Cors | October 24, 2007 @ 11:04 AM #

Forest fires and water contamination. Fires can drastically
affect the role of forests in the water supply Erosion after a fire can result in significant losses of topsoil, increases in the amount of sediments in the water (turbidity), and the release of large quantities of soluble chemicals.
Approximately 80% of the freshwater in the United States originates in the forests.
