A strong cold front is currently moving through the OKC Metro area Sunday afternoon, with a 20+ deg F temperature fall anticipated over the next few hours.   As of  2:30 pm CDT, temperatures were in the mid 40s across the western OK Panhandle, where light snow is forecast tonight, and in the 80s over southern and eastern OK east of the cold front. The radar loop below shows the sharp cold frontal boundary very well:

The Oklahoma Mesonet map below shows the insane temperature variability across Oklahoma, and the sharp wind shift across the front.  I'm currently heading outside here in Norman to experience the abrupt temperature change.

Strong cold front moving across central OK! Comment Posted By tim jacobs | October 21, 2007 @ 2:50 PM #

Reed i have a question.... i know im pobably going to sound stupid but i dont know lol
Why is it that on the diagram showing the temp variation and the wind direction that in the west the wind is blowing east, and in the east the wind is blowing west..... is that where a cold front and warm front meet there causeing changes in wind direction??

Strong cold front moving across central OK! Comment Posted By caleb | October 21, 2007 @ 2:54 PM #

Tim Cold fronts don't always have to have a warm front.

Strong cold front moving across central OK! Comment Posted By tim jacobs | October 21, 2007 @ 2:56 PM #

Caleb i know that lol, but i was just wondering why the wind was in 2 different dirrections, east to west and west to east, just something i wanted to find out why that is?

Strong cold front moving across central OK! Comment Posted By Kenny | October 21, 2007 @ 3:13 PM #

Good Evening,

Those who have been monitoring the CA Fire situation (live coverage at www.cbs2.com) will know there are alot of fires at the moment, well Mr. Kevin Martin and part of his team are accully about to evacuate their homes due to the fact they are withen 1 mile of the fires and ASH is raining down on them. I will keep everyone updated on this.

djkenny_123@hotmail.com It's on my site Tim! Just figured out why temperatures are dropping, It's because a cold front is going to move in making the temperature go from 18C-4C

I'm gonna want to be outside whenever this front hits here in Dallas, but I don't really know when it will be. Where is that first radar loop from?

I just had the front move through.. It was pretty awesome.

The really awesome part was the number of geese migrating with this front. We heard thousands for like the last hour we have been outside.. They were White Fronted Geese AKA specklebellies. Heard some snow geese too.. Some of them are flying so low you could see them. Thats pretty low considering my town has like only 3 lights to light up the night sky.

You know winters on it's way when you hear and see the geese migrating.

fires the severe weather of CA..... As long as people evacuate, and don't get caught on a fire consumed escape route the major loss will be houses etc.... I do have family near the target areas so, it could get hairy for them.

The San Diago situation is getting my attention

Strong cold front moving across central OK! Comment Posted By Sarah.AB | October 22, 2007 @ 8:29 AM #

Wild Fires are never good... hopefully nobody gets hurt.

As for the cold, as long as we get our 2 week deep freeze to help combat the Mountain Pine Beetle, I'm not really looking forward to much snow or bitter cold this Winter.

Strong cold front moving across central OK! Comment Posted By Heidi | October 22, 2007 @ 8:46 AM #

That's awesome about the geese, ChaserBurns. I'll pay special attention this morning as the front comes through. I'm not expecting them to be as low as they were for you, since it's daylight now, but I expect a wave of them! We haven't noticed many geese at all yet this year, but it's no surprise that they got moving with this system.

Not good about the fires. Stay safe, everybody!
