Several long-track tornadic supercells are moving rapidly across parts of Michigan, Illinoi, Indiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi as of 00z Thursday evening. As of 7:30 pm CDT, 6 tornadoes have been reported, but this number will likely increase dramatically as the evening progresses. The low-level jet is intensifying, and several discrete storms are taking advantage of this shear. People in the watch areas shown below should pay close attention to local media for watch and warning updates.

Shown below is the watch/warning display as of 7:30 pm CDT, with the blue dots representing severe thunderstorm warnings, and the red dots tornado warnings. The most likely tornado producers are in northern/central MI, southeastern IL, western KY, and western TN. More tornadic supercells may develop in northern MS along the cold front, and low-level shear is more than adequate for strong tornadoes here as well. Stay tuned for continuous updates throughout the evening on this dangerous weather situation.

Is this an all night thing?
Nothing happening in Grand Rapids right now - all we have had all night, in spite of all the warnings, is a little distant lightning and a few spatters of rain.
I can see the lightning from the severe-warned storms in western Tennessee right now - that's like 90-100 miles away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A funnel cloud went right over my parent's house....local TV was following the ominous looking cloud as it passed over downtown Louisville, KY about 7:30pm EDT. No tornados on the ground in Louisville tonight so far, but there is a huge mess down around Owensboro, KY and Evansville, IN that will be here in the next few hours. My weather radio is getting a workout tonight!
David, good thing you have a weather radio I got one for my birthday this year and love it. although, it hasnt got much of a workout yet, Va is in a bit of a dought, looking for some much needed rain!
David, They just announced on the NBC affiliate in louisville that a building collapsed from a tornado near there.
Heidi, See lightning from that distance is amazing. Cloud tops must be extremely high in altitude to see that far.
Anyone here surprised that there is not a high-risk out for western KY right now? (Or that one was not issued earlier?) This is not even a PDS watch, is it??
Strike, they're at around 50,000 feet, but it also helps that we're up a good bit higher in elevation.
Looks like this will hit Ontario quite hard.
Here in Alberta it is warm but very dry(dew points below freezing).
We have been getting a very unusual amount of wildfires for October.
Luckily they are small and the ground under the dry grass is still wet from summer storms
Yeah, things are really getting interesting around Louisville....Floyd County, IN (right across the Ohio River) has a Warning right now near Hwy 150. I just got back home....drove out to an open area to check out the light show....some serious lightning is flashing all over the sky from the storm just across the river. Hope everyone is staying safe!

this really suck for me nothing except showers are heading towards here
i drove towards chicago and it was amazing there the lightning was going crazy but still no more tornado watches for me.
does anyone know the next good chance of rain or thunderstorms for Chicago.
if you don't feel like checking will you give me a page with either weather models or you know other weather stuff lol.
Heidi, thanks for the pics! Providence is southwest of Louisville...the cell that produced that funnel is now the one just north of where I am, about 15 miles in southern Indiana. If it were daytime, I'd be on the road right now...no way I'm headed out there at night though : )
The NBC affiliate in Louisville just said that the National Weather Service is saying that this may be the largest October outbreak in recent memory!
I'm back home now!! I drove to Two Harbors MN to catch that svr warned storm as it came across the lake!! The wind was insane!! I could easily have seen a brief spin up firing in that!! My pics came out like s@#t!! =(
insanity!
Paul, it looks like your thunderstorm chances are not very good over the next 10+ days. You could see some showers tomorrow and Monday, but nothing major.
I got this from:

:D
The storms in Kentucky and Southern Indiana are actually strengthening as the night goes on....a very strange phenomenon. There are at least 8 different supercells on radar just in about a 150 mile radius of Louisville, most of which are to our southwest.....looks like no sleep tonight!
thanks for the link heidi, that subway parking lot shot is a classic....
Here's some pics of my trip!!

Here's a lil vid I took when I pulled into Two Harbors!!
SMT...if you're still here....Tornado Warning just issued for Kalamazoo, Michigan at 10:00pm EDT.
Looks like they took the live feed off just now.
So, you decided to turn your TIV into a WIV, Brady?! (first photo!! And there was a sale on birdseed? YOU DIDN'T TELL ME!!!!) :D
Does anyone know if the tornado being reported here http://www.weather.com/weather/newscenter/alerts/42240?alertId=533015 has been confirmed as touching down or not? I'm very concerned, as I know someone who lives in Hopkinsville (mom of my best friend). I haven't been able to get any solid reports about this particular storm cell, though.
Guys, take a look at this water vapor image. I've never seen one like it before!

I'll see what I can find, Janet. I have some family friends in Marion, KY & had my mom give them a call a while back, so I know what you mean ... =-O
Wow, Lightning has been amazing out here, I got some video, but I can't edit it, and it's pretty crappy, I took it with a Still camera (it's a very good still cam though)
Hope I can get some better stuff as it goes over :D
Janet, it is likely too early for any confirmed reports for that storm, but I will tell you that on radar it looked like a very dangerous storm. If she lives IN Hopkinsville, it was probably kinda rough, but if she lives south of town, she was probably not affected too much. But there is also more stuff on the way ... What a YIKES night!
Brady-how do you download pictures to make link to here? I have some good pictures of the clouds looking towards Chicago.
That's crazy Heidi!! There's a giant yin yang over my head!! Oh and I forgot to tell ya!! There's a sale on bird seed at Engwalls!! hehe I can't believe all the rain we're getting!!
Thanks, Heidi. Yeah, I just checked the radar out, and it looks like there was a little hook on the back of the cloud that ran right over where the city is. I'm not sure what part of the town she lives in, but from what I see on the post just added to the website here, it looks like there was a tornado just north of the city. I agree, what a night! Looks like I won't be getting much work done . . . much too worried.
Brady, looks like if you had taken your boat you would have had some fun - just watched your video!
Susan, do you know how to get the photos OUT of the camera? If so, it will be a lot easier to tell you how to post them for us to see. :P
yea-there downloaded onto the computer-I have Kodak easyshare something or another.
Photobucket Susan!! Or some other image hosting site!! Create an account then upload em to your album and There ya go!!
New blog!!
Does it cost money?
