News DetailMajor severe weather outbreak for central U.S. today!

A strong diurnal low-level jet and a massive uncapped warm sector will set the stage for a potentially significant severe weather outbreak today, with the possibility of strong tornadoes from southern Lower Michigan to northern Mississippi this afternoon. Based on the latest RUC model data (selected panels below), 1500-2000 CAPE with 0 CIN will prevail across the entire warm sector, with ~40 knots at 850 mb as well. The only negative factor for tornadoes is the near unidirectional flow with height, but with such high low-level shear, embedded supercells within linear structures will still be the dominant mode.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a moderate risk for the entire area mentioned above, including a "hatched area" for strong tornadoes, indicating a 10% or greater probability of an EF2-EF5 tornado within 25 miles of a point. Based on this morning's model data, I would say the highest threat for a significant tornado will exist over southeastern IL, where the highest instability, most backed surface winds in the vicinity of the warm front, and strongest LLJ are located. Stay tuned for continuous blog updates as this severe weather event unfolds!

Hey Reed what are the chances of Ontario getting anything today?????
I'd say pretty low for anything too severe...the upper dynamics will remain to the west and south, but you could get some thundershowers overnight from dying convection rolling out of Michigan.
Ok reed...its showtime, my friend and I take off from Bloomington IL at noon today. Where do you think the best spot would be, along the illinois/ indiana border?
Good luck Chris!
Anywhere along the west central IN border would be good...be sure to stay well northeast of any storms initially since they'll be flying at 50+ mph. Once they show signs of producing or becoming mature supercells, then it's time to intercept.
Are you still thinking of sitting it out Ben? I agree it will definitely be tough to chase these with the fast storm motions.
Any idea about what time these storms should start to fire up?
I like tomorrows outlook. Im only working until 1pm so it says 30% chance of severe storms but the weathernetwork says its only going to rain.
Yeah tomorrow could be interesting as the trough moves east..but I haven't checked it out yet.
Chris: the RUC is showing initiation just west and along the IL/IN border between 3 and 5 pm.
You are in good shape if you can get to your target around 2 pm...I'll be posting updates on the blog and will be checking it all day if you need any data updates.
Yea Reed, I'm sitting this one out even though it may be the last chance of the season. I'll still be spotting for Peoria/Tazewell/Woodford/Mclean Counties in Central IL, if the situation arises. Its just the storm speed motion of 50-60 mph, Dominant Mode being linear that have made me decide not to chase, things could definitly get crazy though.
I'm still monitoring this very closely, and keeping a close eye on the Mesoanalysis that the SPC produces.
The NWS in Lincoln seem to think the storms will initiate Inbetween The Illinois river(Peoria) and Interstate 55(Bloomington) Before Moving into the mod risk area east of Interstate 55.
What do u think Reed?
Had about .30in of rain this morning but now the suns out and that is a good thing. Windy and it looks like us in Central Ohio are going to get nailed sometime after 10pm. Prob won't be supercells that will be more of a Western Ohio prob around Dayton but I still expect a derecho with isolated supercells. I work at 5 today but will be cutting out a bit early I have a feeling, its great to be da boss.
Hey guys.... This is totaly unrelated to the weather, but as I was browsing youtube I found this hilarious cat video!!
Check it out...

Reed,
What do you think is the timing on the storms here in Middle TN, and what are our chances of tornadoes? I hate storms, but I enjoy ya'lls sight for al the info and amazing video.
David: You may have some isolated storms moving northeastward into central TN my late afternoon...but I doubt these will make it far out of northeast MS. More robust convection is expected late this afternoon over western TN, and thought could move into your area late tonight.
That sounds about right Ben...The RUC seems to be pushing initiation later and later with each run.

Lol i thought it was on dc,ut what time like, i dont think it was shown here :(....
It came on at 9pm here... It might be like 10 or so for your area since you live in a different time zone..
oh and btw, thanks for adding me to your sight I really appreciate it.
anyone have any thoughts on the link there? new mesoscale discussion...
Zack if it came on at 9pm there then it would of been am here..... i think the timing could be a problem lol :P
Jimbo... They are saying since storms will be developing in the next couple of hours, a tornado watch may be needed.
GEEZ i'm in a 15% zone for TORNDOES AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I hope I get a BIG tube on my house!!!!!
Yeah me too. Do you have a program guide??
And no worries man, you have helped a lot over the past few weeks so you have to be on there :D
No you don't Caleb... I narrowly escaped one yesterday!
Tim... Do you have a program guide??
Caleb, Either you didnt mean that or your the biggest idiot ever.

Caleb I didn't say that to be funny lol. Its true.
Can your program guide go out several days?? If it does you should check it. It might tell you.
Yes I do Tust me ive been told that tornadoes can't happen in my city....
I could try but i think our guide only goes up to 6am the next morning, its this new setup its awful....
Well just remember that when it does happen and you lose everything and possibly your life!
well i don't know what else to tell you Tim.. Your just gonna have to check the T.V. frequently.
Caleb dont believe that, just because you live in a city doesn't mean they wont happen there....
Will do Zack thanks :D
Tim. I'm bored.....
Caleb Brooklyn new york was hit by a tornado so dont think tornadoes dont hit cities.
I don't live in a city I ment a town
Reed.
No pics or vid from yesterday?
:(
I was watching the tracker all day, imagining what you were seeing.
Anything? I wanna seeeeeee :)
lol Zack, ermmm anyone comin out in your area, just an idea if your bored lol :P
Caleb, get this through your thick head! TORNADOES CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE AT ANY TIME!!!
No unfortunatley...
Ya try telling the people of Greensburg that tornadoes dont go through towns.
Caleb, they can happen anywhere....when svr weather does come your way, watch your back cause i dont want to here that a tornado has happened in your town and you have lost your life because of what someone has said, just watch you baceh :)..... and i know not a nice thing to imagin but just wanted to get a point across so sorry if anyone takes offense or gets upset by that.....
I'm not sure what to say Zack, ermmmmm :S

Ah your not an idiot Caleb, your a 10 year old who loves the weather lol, just a bt silly lol :D
Man Why didn't we get anything in oklahoma yesterday!!
could someone please put that post by David into weather noob terms?
thank you!
Ya if that tornado watch moved about 10 miles i'd be in it
What happened then Zack...... did it all go to far west for you then?
Well Actually Tim, it all went far east of me... I'm not sure what really happened though.
All the Action happened well west of OK yesterday.
My bad east.
Reed, in reference to your last post: I noticed that too. The RUC keeps pushing time for initiation later, and also further EAST.
It Appears initiation is imminent now...Looking to the EAST of Morton IL, there appears to be a huge CU field going up, and by looking at the visible satellite it appears the CU field is located along, and just East of Interstate 55, the NWS/SPC have called this one pretty good.
One thought i BELIEVE i see the cold front on visible satellite, LOCATED near Galesburg and Stretching back SE.
Ah right ok well, thats it really no one knows everything about re weather..... thats why we are all here lol to find out and study :P
Right w/ ya Tim.
well at least there is still a chance for some severe weather for chicago
i'm just hoping for some of that
i can't wait
we got huge winds here
it's gusting here like 55mph almost well it feels a lot more when i was coming back from school because one skinny kid the wind pulled him all the way on the street and when i spit its on the other side of the street
I would say this day is going to go down as one of the if not the biggest tornadic days in October on record. I'm thinking give or take 60 tornadoes. I'm in Ohio and it is 79 with a heat index of 82, dewpoint 64, humidity 77, wins sw at 18 gusting to 26 and barometer 29.76 and falling. Going to be nasty somewhere. Forget the Plains get to the Ohio Valley.
jw can any one tell if i have chance for svr storms tommarow in central jersey? with this big storm system?
Did anyone watch storm chasers last night?
Ye Zack :D.....I think and would like to hope, this site alone is breeding the next generation of storm chasers and meteorlogist, its so great here and so glad i fount it cause no one here understands why i like the weather cause we get nothing and when i come on here its completely different, everyone either has the same dream or living that dream.....its great here :D :D
Caleb or Ben are you going out for chasing?
I was just reading SevereStudios.com - they have two chasers in the field and a bunch of updates. Anyone else from Michigan or Illinois going out?
yes i did seems like it is series this year unlike last year where it was just 1 hour espisode
At 300 PM CDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to
indicate a tornado. This tornado was located 12 miles southwest of
Landersville... or about 8 miles northeast of Haleyville... moving
northeast at 30 mph. Reports from Haleyville indicate damage to
buildings and downed power lines with this storm
tornado in northern michigan, near clare/cadillac area
make that 2 tornados, one in clare, one near higgins lake about 20-30 miles apart
Andrew not right now but there is cumulus clouds in the sky
Tim I think the next step to your site is to create a live Radar.
Haven't you seen the SPC page on there?? admitedly its there loop and it is credited to them with a link to the site but there are warnings and an up to date loop as it updates on the SPC site :D
im not clever engh to comeup with my own just yet
Caleb, trust me, you don't want a tornado over your house or even your town. I was told tornados don't happen in my town as well. Remember a little town called Eagle Pass that was hit by a tornado in April? I live here. You really have to see first-hand the destruction that a tornado can do. I was there about 5 minutes after the tornado struck and seeing all those injured people is just horrible.
Oh geez cells popping up!
Chris I never said that I wanted people to get hert. but I want the tornado to be at least an EF2 not like the greensburg one
I understand. It's about seeing the tornado, I know. I didn't mean to sound like an asshole, im just saying, be careful what you wish for. I find it entertaining to watch what's going on as well, just not when it's going on in my area :)
Theres a load of warnings out now, i haven't counted yet lol :)
Even an EF-2 can cause serious injuries and fatalities. Tornadoes are nice to watch if they occur in open field, if they occur in populated areas they're very bad, I want nobody to be in such a situation. You know what I want to stress... stay safe.
All of southwestern Ontario will likely be under a severe thunderstormwatch this evening because we will be getting the leftovers from these storms today.
Yeah based on what I see, today is going to be much worse (or better depending on how you look at it) then yesterday. Not sure about 60-80... my bet would be in the 25-35 range. But who knows. The CU field over E Illinois is about explode!
Caleb, you should try to get into position.
I cannot believe how fast SevereStudios.com is updating there site. Did that add members to their chase team? I saw they were recruiting people to join the team last week. I was thinking about applying, but I do not have much experience. Anyway, they are blogging like crazy over there with chasers in the field already. I cannot believe they actually went to Kansas yesterday. That SevereStudios team seems to be getting more aggressive.
Things starting to happen here in N. Illinois - cumulus popping and building, winds going nuts with big gusts - they just issued a tornado watch for my area until 11pm. We've had sun almost all day - hoping the bad stuff stays somewhere not populated, but those areas are hard to find around here.
Looks as if a lot is starting to happen now.... AL seems to be getting quiet a lot
Tim i'm still here... I'm working on my own site as well... You can help if you want(please). I'm hoping you can add it to your site..
yeh sure Zack would love to help if you want me to.....what is the link cause would like to check it out if thats ok?
and sure yeh well definetly add it to my site......
TVS over MI......
^^ Here is a rather ominous looking RUC run. To me it shows a squall line with supercells out in front of it. Check out Kentucky and Tennesee at 11:00 pm tonight.
Yikes.
Here is my site...^^^
Tim... I'm having some trouble w/ the layouts... Iwant to move the blog to the front page and want and introduction at the top... And I also need help on getting a logo.

http://www.freewebs.com/za15/
Yeh sorry about that.....lol yeh you have got a lot over you at the moment.....are you going to be heading out or are you at work?
Hey Brady, you should have seen it a couple hours ago when we were in the "eye" of this thing. Seriously it was a perfect circle of blue right overhead. The winds also died down to nothing for about a half hour.
Just amazing that this thing is causing severe weather from here to the gulf coast.
By the way man, keep your eyes on the radar you have storms coming at you!
I left work when the tornado watch came over the radio!! I only have a lil fuel so I have to plan a trip carefully!!
How's it looking in the eye of this crap Andrew?? It looks like it's right over you now!!
Tim... Does the link work?
Zack just post the link straight to your blog.
www.freewebs.com/ontariostormchaser/blog.htm
that take you right to my blog.
I guess you answered that!!hehe
Hey Brady, it's cloudy and rainy. That's it. lol.
You have several decent little storms coming right at you. Get the camera ready. Maybe one or two will come right over Superior and across the harbor. That would be cool.
I'll be ready for em!! What do you think they will do when they cross the lake!! Are they gonna take a hard west motion?? There is still some good wind coming in right off of the lake!!
Cool Brady well i hope you get what you have been waiting for :D good luck
Yeh Zack the link works, ive left you some cooments in the blog and guestbook lol :P
Hey Brady the ones that might make it to you are just south of Hayward. Looks like a close deal, they might just hit out in the lake further. Or the lake might make them puke, I dunno, I know nuthin, lol.
IT'S HAPPENING in Kentucky.
I read them... Thanks! Yeah uh thats what I need help on is writing stuff on the front page. Could you tell me how you did it??
Errrrmmmm you can read what i wrote on my home page but i dont know how i did it lol :P i just wrote down lol sorry
Oh well thanks for trying.... Gotta run guys, so see ya later!!!
Hawesville KY!!
See ya Zack!!

Hey AJ. Not much i got a little rain this afternoon and the storms that are going to happen today are going to hit me at night. And i cant say up because i have to work at 8 in the morning. Other then that its all good. and im in a 30% chance for tomorrow. So ill be chasing tomorrow cause im of work at 1pm.
Velocity scan out of HPX in Kentucky is pretty amazing right now.
*Gets on GR3* Cool ;) There's a cold front moving over me right now, and it's making things chillier than I like. Oh well, it'll be this way from now on, for awhile.
Good luck Matt!
To me, the signature on this cell is awfully apparent. There MUST be something touching down now.

The down side to winter lol....the freezing temps.... speaking of the cold we have finnaly reached freezing temps here today lol....i went outside the morning and the lake had frozen over behind my house, and its a big lake lol..... i think it was around 2 degrees c over the night but im not sure lol
I like the colder weather... when I have a larger jacket than my standard denim one ;)
On GR3: look at that tor-warning up in Michigan. Now doesn't that just scream "TVS"??
AJ if you wouldn't mind could you post some GR images of that storm in Kentucky (my GR isn't working for some reason!) Tonight of all nights!!!!
I hope everyone in that area is under shelter!
I count 4 really tight couplets with my crappy radar I am using.
lol its got one now lol :D
Ooops, I was talking about the southeast Kentucky area. Just to clear that up!
tuskaloosa has a tw right now and stuff and collage football game
Tomorrow looks like in my area that im going to catch the end of these storms as they pass over my work.
Hmm. Waterspout on Lake Huron right now?
AT 554 PM EDT...A SPOTTER REPORTED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM PRODUCING A
FUNNEL CLOUD OVER BLACK LAKE AT 554 PM. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR

Well hope something comes your way Matt!
I've lost situational awareness!!!!! Too many TVS's, couplets, meso markers everywhere.
Glad I'm sitting up here in the nice gentle rain. Hope everyone stays safe tonight!
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/4701/klvxyu8.jpg
I'm sitting at my perch over looking Superior!! It's looking quite interesting around me!! It's getting pretty dark to my west!! The clouds are starting to take a before the severe stuff look rather than the pre winter look!! =)
