Here is a highlight video clip from storm chasing yesterday in southwest Oklahoma, featuring a massive gustnado that developed under a gust front and crossed the road a short distance in front of us. Gustnadoes are most often associated with outflow-dominant situations, and usually consist of a mass of rotating dust. In hindsight, we should have driven through it!

great video guys!
Nice video! Sure is nice to see something!
Sounds like you guys might get in another chase come Wednesday. The SPC's wording is pretty interesting, like they might up it to a moderate risk!
Nice vid guys!! Just had to make a stop at Wally world didn't ya!! hehe I gotta fly! I'll check it out a lil better after work!! +
Nice vid!! Only you guys can make a cloud of s@#t become interesting!! Great job on the full rainbow too!!
So, instead of replacing Joel with a female actress, you got two female relatives to come along with BOTH of you?! Brilliant! Be sure to add "female chasers" to the tags if you put this on YouTube! :D
... Any time you get to say "haboob" and "suspended cow manure" in the same video, you have to believe that it was a sucessful chase. I mean, stuff like wall clouds, rainbows and peeing dogs, well, that's just bourgeois.
But please, do not tease me with your talk of severe weather for today. If necesary, I suppose I might see fit to produce a video of my own ... perhaps that of a diminutive handmade twig raft being launched and therefore set asail on a small rivulet rippling down our road, if one should appear, that is. Sounds majestic, don't you think? It also sounds like a day-long production. I better get started!
(For those concerned about my psychological well-being, rest assured that I have simply had too much coffee in too short a time. Thank you.)
Hey guys....
Great video Reed glad you got something :D
Great Video Reed. Nice shot of the full rainbow too. I didn't get much more then lots of heavy rain and some wind/hail in central ks.
Nice video.
Looks like Ohio is targeted on the Day 4 outlook. Nice here today especially when your #1 in the BCS and its 77 and sunny.
See you do care about double rainbows!
Tell Joel his dog needs to rope it in.
I liked the clouds, and the Rainbow. It seems like you guys have fun, and also work hard to get footage. I will keep checking back in to see what is progressing. Take care.... Will
Yeah I think my sister might be in for a career change now...gustnadovideos.net.
HEIDI! The coffee buzz in the morning is the highlight of my day when there are no storms to chase. Sorry about your lack of svr chances today...maybe something could happen mid-week. Wednesday looks potentially huge here in OK!
Hey Reed, I got onto some of the storms in Kiowa county yesterday, around Frederick. We saw a couple of wall clouds. Wish things were alittle better yesterday.
We were going to head to Altus but we stayed alittle farther south hoping one of the southern most cells would go evil on us.
Where did that dog come from? I want that dog.
I must say, I heartily approve of Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony as the theme song!
Is it just me or the SPC's outlook for today/afternnon looking quiet good....im not sure
we went all the way out there yesterday but forgot to bring our video camera. glad you caught what kept chasing us down the road. we took off so the dust wouldn't catch us and we left our weather radio on the roof. it fell off as we were getting ahead of the storm. we opted not go back for it.
nice....... any personal chase goals for 08, location wise?
Nice video! These gustnados are pretty interesting, especially if they come closer to the updraft of the cell.
There's a new interesting topic about Tornadoes in Spain or the "Spanish Plains" on the German Skywarn forum: http://skywarn.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4562 .
Anyone who is interested in tornadoes in Europe should take a look.
Here's a vintage tornado vid:

Great article Volker!..... thats quiet intreging lol :P
Nice video Reed! Any of you guys know anything about this new Storm Chasers series coming to the Discovory channel?
Hey Travis.... yeh i think it starts on wednesday just give me a second and i will give you the link for the schedule....
I am like 0 for 20 in the Altus area now. At some point I need to just call it quits. That Altus storm was exciting for a whole 5 minutes. We did get to core punch that nice storm near hobart and our winds rapidly switch around as the area just north of us began to rotate on radar. My visibility was probably 20 feet through most of that storm and we recieved up to probably atleast nickel, if not a few quarter-size hail stones. Wednesday still has some kinks that need to be worked out, but if you look at the precip on wednesday night on the wrf, it screams long-track supercells.
Here you go Travis the link is below ....

Yeah I found another link for it. It looks pretty cool.
Im sure this series has been on before because i reckon ive seen it, has anyone else.....
yeh now i think about it, it was this time last year it was on lol
Anyway guys it seems as if its going to be a quiet nigh tonight, weather wise lol so im going to get some sleep....
have a good one speak tp you all tomorrow!
HA HA HA It's a Haboooooooooooobbbbbbbbbb
I think that was a landspout.... thay can also be with
outflow-dominant situations.
Great video Reed! I look forward to seeing you this coming summer!
Awesome job guys! Woohoo!
Hey everyone, what's up? It's a chilly 55 degrees here in Garden City, with a wind chill of 50. Looks like fall is here to stay.
Hey Everyone!! Yeah, last night was very roudy and at times frightning! There were several reports of brief land spouts or gust nadoes and as we all know Reed got some footage of one(btw, Nice Video Reed!!). When the severe storms approached my house, we had some high winds and torrential rain. I even had a little bit of hail!! Rainfall was impressive as well with many locations recieving over an inch of rain!!
Well now its 6:13pm, and its a chilly 66 degrees outside not to mention the breezy north wind! It only got up to 67 degrees and tonight it will be around 49 degrees! Fall is definently here to stay!
Boy It sure is quiet!! Reed!! I think we should make it Tv.net tradition to start our chase footage from Wal-mart!! hehe Did you explain to your sis our obsession with Wal-marts??
I have crashed from my severe-intensity mania spell. I don't know how much longer I can stand this business of the SPC having us in the slight risk for two or more days, and then on THE DAY, all severe threats VANISH! 8-O
Maybe on Wednesday/Thursday things will shape up a little better farther east. Is that really asking so much?! :D
Joel's dog needs his own MySpace.
Hi Reed.
Hope you guys had a good time yesterday in the gustnado storm. I was tagging along with Jeff Snyder and crew when you drove by and honked. Being that it was a close-to-home chase, I wasn't too disappointed in everything lining out. The sunset was awesome and there was some good low-level shear going on. We were just on the verge of, at least, being happy that the outflow was still warm when we were blasted by cool air. Everything went down hill from there. But now I'm looking towards Wednesday and crossing my fingers that the NAM will verify. I love unsettled weather patterns.
When was the last time you actually had a storm Heidi?? =(
It's about time you get yours!! hehe
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS On Saturday there is a chance of tornadoes in my area yeaaaaaaaaaa
These secert codes have been creepy lately!! 66652
Great vid! I love, "Are you guys like, weather men or something?" Great!
Yesterday was a bummer...i'm glad at least Reed caught something cool on video. I have 3 tests this week and have been sick but that's not stopping me...i'm studying balls right now and tomorrow hoping that wednesday pans out nice and good.
Wheeeeeeeeee Check out my site now guys! I have some pictures of the north saskatchewan river from here in edmonton!
Also Reed, if you ever need a forecast for canada I'll be glad to make a map for you or anything!
I came back a moment ago because it just occurred to me that Caleb had not yet mentioned anything about his severe chances this week. And then I saw ^^^^!
(It looks like Thursday, Caleb ... but who knows, maybe Saturday too? Try not to rub it in.)
Brady, the last *real* storm we had was ... probably May? April? If you mean here at my house, it had to have been then. We've had storms in the county north & south of here, but nothing really fantastic since Spring. We've had a few squall lines and some pop-up action ... I think I've only had to call NWS to report hail once, maybe twice all year. There have been no supercells reasonably close since April. I keep track of the number of days we've had tornado watches & warnings, and this year so far has been FAR below average. For comparison purposes, last year we were spoiled, I guess - 15 days with a tornado watch and 4-5 warnings for my county (I lost track of the # of actual warnings we had on 9/22 last year, so I'm not sure of the actual number). This year, we've had a whopping 4 days of tornado watch and 1 warning (March 1st, over the northwest part of my county. Sadly, that storm produced a killer tornado in Howell Co, MO).
So you can see why I am fussing about the lack of anything significant, right!?... Cue the violins, someone ... please?! :D
Heidi, I"m playing the world's smallest record player. You know what song is playing? "Cry Me A River". ;) jk
Hey everyone, what's up? I have homework... grr...
Hi everyone! Hey Reed and Joel! great video! The sunset behind the storm make it so photogenic! WOW! It will surely inspire me for my next painting!
Just look at the WRF and all I can say is WOW! Bad news for OK if that verifies. 700+ helicity at Tulsa at 0z, enough said.
I sense lots of good video coming...
Will this one end the drought???????
Yeah, but no CAPE in Tulsa...dryline is further west. I like the shear in KS better, but hey, I'll admit I am geographically biased :-D.
985 sfc low + excellent directional shear + moderate instability= trouble. (850's S/SE closer to the low on GFS/WRF) Easily a moderate risk as it stands now. I'm chasing the low early in the day, then flying south for the dryline. I am gonna guess I get screwed on clouds again.
Saturday could be huge too.
Nice video Timmer, I'm disappointed you didn't carsurf into that. Show the TIV guys who the real McCoy is.
The Drout's over because Reed has this video. But can he end the drout till winter comes?
HAHAHA! Nice one Dick.
Yeah the new models look ridiculous for Wednesday. I might have to move my tornado videos underground.
This is going to be HUGE...for the populated areas of central OK and central KS as well if this run verifies
I'll admit it's hard to get excited about these high-shear/low-CAPE setups, as none of them have really worked out since I arrived in OK a couple years ago, but I'm floored by the 00z NAM fcst soundings. The hodographs look like something out of a nightmare along and east of the I-44 corridor late Wed afternoon into the evening. If we can get the clearing necessary for decent instability ahead of that dryline (which might be a big if), I have to think we have a shot at finally breaking the C OK curse of the past few years.
Well I'm finally back! This morning was crazy here in N Texas! We must have gotten several inches of rain an an hour, and it just didn't stop! The streets around my school had 2 feet of fast flowing water around them, and people were wading through past their knees!
Anyways, that was fun. I'm just barely in the Wednesday outlook, and from what yall are saying, I'm very happy about that. I guess all I can do is wait until the new 2 day and see what they say.
The hodographs are simply amazing. The 850 winds look to be more southerly than before, but I would be playing SC KS because of the 850 directions at this point. The mass precip all day and cloud cover look bad, but I have decided thats just because it will be a day long event of wedges..... probably not, but with those lcl's and that shear, you can dream.
I have never seen the high-shear/low-CAPE work for me either, but I figure I am due. I am biased to OK because of gas prices. I also just want to see an OK tornado this year, it just wont be complete without one. KS does look very good wednesday.
The low-shear/High-CAPE works pretty good around here!!
Last July we got a hell of a storm when Reed was ape about the CAPE but said the shear wasn't impressive!! Hopefully the reverse does good for ya Okies!!
Wow. I'm feeling all gitty now even though we're still a couple days out. Wednesday is a day that has potentially HUGE written all over it, and potentially HUGE disappointment written all over it too. I'd really like to see the 00z gfs slow down the system a hair.
"with those lcl's and that shear, you can dream"
What are lcl's?
And what does anyone think about the Dallas area wednesday?
I forgot to add, I'm betting on this going MDT risk, if not tonight then tomorrow with the 1730 UTC outlook (assuming the models still look similar). SPC seems to love dynamic setups like this. Hopefully it won't be in vain like April 13 and April 24 of this year largely were.
April 13 in vain?!
Sorry if you don't remember Brett, but I was in downtown Dallas with my family when a tornadic supercell headed right into it. Fortunately it didn't spawn another twister till it was past downtown, but there were four confirmed touchdowns in the metroplex that day (which was a Friday the 13th by the way).
Just thought I would refresh your memory.

Also, if I remember right, there was a huge severe weather outbreak on the 24th, causing at least 5 deaths and 40-something injuries in one Texas town.
Connor - you're right, both of those days featured a handful of tornadoes that were significant for those affected by them.
However, I don't think many people would consider either day a tornado outbreak (well, at least not in the hyped-up area in the case of April 24, since there were quite a few twisters in CO/WY, plus the infamous Eagle Pass TX event). In terms of chasing, most would agree both of those days were disappointments in which very high shear was largely put to waste in the target area.
You're right, they definitely weren't as bad as they were supposed to be. Every weather forecaster or meteorologist was forecasting a major outbreak centered over DFW on the 13th, and it ended up not being nearly as bad as it could have.
It was definitely scary being in the path of that supercell though with all of the hype about that day.
The April 13th high risk, IMO, was issued because of the impact of severe weather on the NASCAR race that was ongoing...not so much for tornadic threat (although it was there), but for high winds and hail, and the impact it could have possibly had on life and property in such a confined area, with little or no shelter.
Simon Brewer documented a tornado that hit the industrial part of Fort Worth that day IIRC.
I definitely expect a mod risk tonight, as long as the gfs is somewhat in line with what the NAM put out. I agree with you on both of those days Brett, though I had agreat day in KS on the 24th because I was within 100 yards of 2 different tornadoes that day (overall though was a major bust from the forcast).
LCL= lifted condensation level, represents the height at which an air parcel being lifted dry adiabatically will become saturated because of adiabatic cooling (caused by expansion) and condense into cloud. It approximates the height of cloud base when there is mechanical forcing. Thats the wikipedia version. In layman's terms it is the the height of the cloud base. Low LCL's are usually an important part of being able to get a tornado on most days. I always understood this stuff (LCL, LFC,...)better by looking at a Skew-T diagram myself (wikipedia has a nice graphic that might help you out).
Thanks Wes. Can someone tell me what a good LCL is for tornadoes, especially strong ones, to form?
Connor,
Generally 1500 m or less is ideal, but not obsolete. When the LFC's, (level of free convection) and LCL's.......are close together in heighth....the better potential for tornadic supercells. LCL's, put simply, are the height of the cloud bases. LFC's at 2000 or less are ideal for tornadoes. If LCL's and LFC's are further away, it seems, that more SRH is needed, more CAPE, and CIN is present.
Jon Davies is the man. ......
http://members.cox.net/jondavies1/LLbuoyprimer/LLbuoy_values.htm
If you get a LCL around 900mb your normally good. For the big ones you want a LCL as low as possible. That way there is minimal distance the funnel has to travel down to touch the ground. I normally dont pay much attention to LCL's unless they are just really high.
Thanks for that site Dick. Theres a lot of info there
While the CAPE values at 00z are forecast to be around 2000 J/kg in the warm sector, which is more than sufficient for strong tornadoes since a strong mesocyclone will add to the updraft strength, they'll most definitely be a lot higher if the ~70 dewpoints verify. It looks like the widespread light precip forecast by the WRF is messing up the thermo profile a little. If this model run verifies the apocalypse is inevitable.
I'm thinking about betting my life savings on a moderate risk...but it doesn't matter...tv.net is issuing a high risk..
Reed, if you were the SPC, would you have the DFW area in your risk area? If so, how high risk?
One way to guess the LCL height, is to see the temperature and temperature dewpoint spread. If you have 94/61, tornado potential would seem low. If you had 94/77, LCL's would be at a level that could support a tornado threat. The closer, the better, but if I see greater 22-25 spread, tornadoes don't seem likely.
Reed, I hope you are right! I can't remember the last supercell I have seen. I took my whopping one week vacation from work, when I saw the shear last week, so that I could chase!
Too bad the new 2 day isnt until 3 am. But at the rate this English paper is going I'll probably still be up then...
The SPC home page already says moderate, even though they havent issued the outlook yet.
It's over! The world is about to end!!!!
SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER EVENT INCLUDING THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING TORNADOES IS FORECAST ACROSS THE CENTRAL U.S. THIS PERIOD CENTERED OVER PARTS OF KS AND OK
Reed...you have room on wednesday? my partner has 3 classes and i really dont wanna have to go solo especially since all i have is a palm pilot since my laptop crashed last night! (405)512-4732 i'll try and shoot you an email if not...it's still cool but i dont wana do something stupid due to my inexperience when the apocalypse does occur!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in the hatched 30% area!!!I'm in the hatched 30% area!!!I'm in the hatched 30% area!!!
Forgive me, its been a while, and after hearing all of this discussion about the apocolypse, I am PUMPED!! AS:AJS:LASDGLJ:ASDFHASDRIPHA!
Why is no one here to share my excitement?!?!
Oh I am here buddy...i would be doing numerous cartwheels right now and backflips and summersaults if I knew how to!!! I probably will not sleep the next 2 nights to be honest...i am just a little bit nervous and am hoping the outlooks and models hold/get even better! thank God for storm season!
A little fourther south and it would be just perfect for me! As of right now, Tulsa appears ****ed. Are discrete cells a good thing? Because the wording in the outlook puts me in the area most likely for discrete cells.
Yea discreet cells mean that it won't turn into a squall line LIKE SUNDAY...that's what you want...a huge supercell by itself full of energy and power and rotation which should occur if the forecast for tomorrow verifies.
That's what I thought. I'm so excited! If only I could go chase. I hate having to let the supercells come to me! Even though I sure wouldn't be surprised if one did this time!
yeah it's looking good for sure...i mean the spc rarely issues moderate. the last time i remember was up in mn or ws a month and a half ago and i think there were 9 tornadoes that day...the other time i went to nebraska from norman and there were 6 reported tornadoes taht day so there should definitely be some crazy weather tomorrow
I just realized I have a band marching contest thing tomorrow. They were worried about it getting rained out... how bout hailed/tornadoed out! :)
We also have a tornado drill in school tomorrow. Now I'm not so sure it will just be a drill :D
OOOH!!! Lookin good!! hehe Wish I could come down for this one!! Thanx to GR I can watch it from the filth of my living room!! hehe
Yeah I am just glad we are getting some of the power back here in OK. about time. as much as i hate to go i have 3 tests this week so i have to study some so i dont feel guilty when i am chasing storms on wednesday when i should be studying.
If tomorrow night's run looks the same as tonight, then it will probably be a high risk!
Hey Brady! You missed my mini-heart attack when I saw the latest 2 day outlook. I'm glad yall decided to finally send the storms back down south!
Thanks reed...now it looks like instead of falling asleep at 5 a.m. due to excitement of a moderate risk that i will fall asleep at 8 or 9 a.m. because the high risk has been mentioned
It looks like I have my own weather to deal with here!! Fall is Here for sure!! I wish I could send Hedi a good supercell or ten!!
I'll have to get down there and check one of these events out before next summer!! =)
I hate typos on Names!! =( Sorry Heidi!!
ASDflaskdfa/skld.
I have 2 paragraphs out of a 3 page essay over Edgar Allen Poe's use of diction and tone for characterization. And I can't concentrate because of all the excitement. this sucks!
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Sorry couldn't resist....
I know there is another thread started already, but I wanted to say that the exchange up there between Connor, Wes & Dick about LCL & LFC was great - very informative. That was exciting to read in itself. But THEN, THEN!!!!!!!!!..................... I'VE ALREADY SEEN THE SPC OUTLOOKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D AND that is NOT COFFEE INDUCED!!!!!!!!!!!
wow. you guys were pretty close to me. was that around anadarko? i went through there, then a little ways west.
