Conditional severe threat today in KS

A narrow window for supercells will exist across west-central and southwest KS late this afternoon and early evening, near and just south of a consolidating triple point.  The depth of the moisture, a strong cap, and late timing of the jet streak are the main concerns today, but wind shear will be sufficient for tornadic supercells throughout the warm sector, especially around and after 00z.  RUC forecast loops for MSLP, 850 mb, CAPE, and precip are posted below.  Since we're anticipating initiation will hold off until very near or after sunset (if at all), we're going to sit this chase out and watch Oklahoma dominate Missouri.  Tomorrow still looks very interesting in western OK, and maybe in north-central KS as well....we'll definitely be chasing tomorrow.

Verrrry Conditional threat today. I may and or may not be available for nowcasting today. I will DEFINITLY be available for nowcasting tomorrow though.

I think the models look awesome for tomorrow, compared to today, i do have to agree that if something does get going today it is going to explode, so keep a eye out.

Brady i seen you talking me taking Joe's role of nowcasting, actually a few times he called you, he was passing information from me, because he was actively posting you status online, i was able to respond with my observations, and suggestions. I would have been prepared to get down to the road by road nowcasting, if you would have gotten ahold of me. There was a few times, when he posted your location, that i found a good quick way to get you to a point in front to intercept.

If anyone needs nowcasting help tomorrow, than they can feel free to call me @ 309-360-7489. I'll even help try and pin point places for best initiation using mesoanalysis from the SPC.

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Andrew | October 13, 2007 @ 1:18 PM #

Sam, lol that is a figment of the GFS model's imagination for now. It's a very long range model. But dang, that is one nice looking blizzard!

Guess we just have to wait 2 weeks to see if it's right.

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Monty M - hutch, ks | October 13, 2007 @ 1:19 PM #

Jonathan, I know I'm splitting hairs here, but I have to say:
When I was a younger lad and prone to all nighters, I would celebrate the end of said all-nighter at the local IHOP in White Rock, BC. (In other words, there are none outside of BC in Canada. Yet. I'm waiting for one to open up here in the Peg.)

So....u guys got lightroom did ya? I saw the info vids on it wen i got cs3. lol they make the videos seem as if everything is sooo easy to use, but i guess it isn't. $50 for an info book! wow....if it were me, I'd probably be too cheap to buy it and spend hours ripping out hair until I understood the program. Well, i guess good luck in figuring it out Brady! lol.

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 13, 2007 @ 9:54 PM #

I think this is a lil overkill!! hehe I just wanna print my freakin name on them!! that's it!!

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 13, 2007 @ 9:57 PM #

I am too cheap!! but I might have no choice but to buy it!!
Is it just me, but is this cell going around GC??

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Heidi | October 13, 2007 @ 10:05 PM #

I think the "hard" part is really figuring out what you're dealing with and what you can do with the program. It is, in fact, rather easy to use (as in, easy to manipulate your stuff) once you feel comfortable enough with it to actually try some stuff. In a lot of ways, they've made things so simple that it ends up seeming difficult (especially when it comes to arranging your files. The organizational capacity is phenomenal). When I said that "its tough," it was in the sense of it being really overwhelming. I mean, there are just SOOO many things you can do with your photos, especially if you've shot them in RAW. ... Anyway, I hope you get along okay with it, Brady. =-O :D

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Heidi | October 13, 2007 @ 10:12 PM #

Oh, and BTW, Brady, I don't know if I mentioned it already or not, but I still haven't explored deeply enough to know how to put my name on it with Lightroom!!!! I use the Lexmark for that (that's the program that came with our printer!)

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 13, 2007 @ 10:17 PM #

I get a lil of it!! I just need to play with it some!! I don't wanna do a hell of a lot to my pic's!! I'm sure I'll wanna screw with them more as I learn the program!! Thanx for the help so far!! I just think my pic's are too nice not to mess with them a lil and see what I can do!! AAAHH!! 6668

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 13, 2007 @ 10:21 PM #

Right on!! I might have to crack that one!! hehe I can't believe I can't do it with my not so easyshare!! If anyone can make me feel stupid!! please do so!! hehe Whoa 000

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Brady MN | October 13, 2007 @ 10:24 PM #

Some of my pic's have the wrong date on them too!! I need to learn how to modify that too! Sux when your batteries come out and your in a hurry to get a good pic and the date's messed up!!

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Heidi | October 13, 2007 @ 10:55 PM #

Brady, I wish I knew more about what to tell you with that stuff. My husband is the tech guy around here, as I already told ya! He installed it and fiddled around with it for a few days before I even touched it. Things I would be able to help with (that you might have questions about) would be importing & exporting photos after you've messed with them, and changing the file size. So if you run into issues with that, let me know.

... I am trying not to get TOO excited about Monday's chances here, but the model runs are looking good for shear and precip (ETA & GFS) ... EXCEPT I would really like to see them indicating more instability. Maybe it's really underestimating the potential - if anyone has any thoughts about the instability potential for Monday, chime in, please!

If I only had a dollar for every time that happened!! Still might get some cool looking clouds though!!!

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By David Reimer | October 14, 2007 @ 9:07 AM #

Before you guys kill yoruselfs over the outlook,

You may want to take a look at what the Norman, OK NWS is saying :)

"HAIL TO THE SIZE OF TENNIS BALLS AND WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH WILL BE
THE MAIN CONCERN. HOWEVER... TORNADOES WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE LATE
THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING."

"STORM SPOTTER GROUPS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL ACROSS THE
RISK AREA SHOULD PLAN FOR SEVERE WEATHER OPERATIONS FROM LATE THIS
AFTERNOON THROUGH TONIGHT."

Notice the EMERGENCY MANGMENT.

Good morning everyone. We sure had some storms move through here early this morning with lighting and heavy rain. Reed where are you guys going to head today. I am thinking SW kansas maybe around Anthony.

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Monty M - Hutch, KS | October 14, 2007 @ 9:50 AM #

AJ I am figuring you will probably be out chasing also. Where are you going to head too this afternoon?

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Reed | October 14, 2007 @ 10:50 AM #

Hey guys...

We'll be heading out to western OK in a few hours...the front surging south is definitely a concern...we may have to cheat south to get some discrete storms.

I'm working on the tracker right now!

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Monty M - hutch,ks | October 14, 2007 @ 11:23 AM #

Reed the tracker was working for me this morning so I think it's fixed now. I am heading to SW kansas in a couple of hours. Sure hope something gets going this afternoon.

Conditional severe threat today in KS Comment Posted By Heidi | October 14, 2007 @ 11:24 AM #

Hey guys! So Reed you're still heading out? Sweet! I hope you see something really cool...like a tornado perhaps? :D

Tennis ball sized hail?! THATS MASSIVE! Well..I guess then lets hope this chase doesn't turn out like the one where Reed and whoever else got stuck in that hail and we're all "Shield your eyes!" Well, good luck!
