With mixed emotions, Reed and I decided to get some sleep around 1 am PST. The hurricane was showing signs of rapid intensification, however, it was also taking a hard left turn moving almost due west. This would have taken the hurricane well south of our location. It is now 6:15 am PST and we have just woken to get an update. The hurricane has resumed its northwest motion and is now right of the official forecast which, if maintained, will bring the eye directly over us.
You can see the textbook eye of John in both the satellite and radar images below. The jog to the left has slowed the progression of John slightly, so we are now expecting an early afternoon landfall. Winds have already increased and are now steady out of the SE at around 30 mph. Wave height continues to grow and they are now absolutely huge. Last night we could see continuous lightning on the SE horizon, coincident with rapid strengthening. This will likely be by far the most intense hurricane that both Reed and I have witnessed. We believe there will be major damage to Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding areas. Our exact location is 6 miles east of the SW tip of the Baja Peninsula and approximately 40 feet inland. We will be posting a video update as soon as we get daylight. -- Joel

Hi Sarah!
The waves are getting HUGE! and it looks like we could easily sustain a direct hit from a cat 3 or 4. This thing is a BEAST!
I hope all is well in the UK
Hi Reed - we are watching your updates - the waves look scary to say the least! It is good to know you are OK - BUT be CAREFUL!!!!
I love the updates, you guys are taking this site to the next level. Watch out for debris seriously.
Thank you so much for what you are doing, it takes great courage and a lot of balls.... and you are our only update. I live in NH and my daughter (Kristy-just like the hurricane.....haha) is actually honeymooning in the hotel you are staying in which is how I got your website. Be safe-all of you and though it's an amazing thing to watch, as a mom it scares the living daylights out of me. Keep sending the pictures and I live for your updates these days. Your parents must be so proud of all that you have accomplished in your lives (I read all the bios) along with being crazy guys! Again, thanks, marlies
Hope you are ready to move if the eye wobbles east/northeast of your location, because it's a tiny eye.
Hi Marlies,
YES we met your daughter and husband yesterday! They were definitely enjoying themselves, and have been evacuated to the ball room which has no windows and is on higher ground....they will definitley be fine there...they even get free food...and the food is AMAZING!
We'll keep posting video updates..we plan to post another one when the tropical storm force winds arrive.
Stay tune and don't worry about your daughter.
Cheers,
Reed
Hey guys awsome job you're doing over there, we met yesterday (the guy who told you about the watch tower). In any case you are our eyes and ears on the oceanfront, 'cause from where I live, I can`t really see a thing, keep us posted and show us some of those waves you're having out there. Congratulations on the site, keep up the good work!
Cheers.
Hi Diego!
Thanks for posting! and continue to do so!
The waves here are HUGE as you can see...and it looks like John is intensifying. It has a textbook eye with perfectly clear skies within it. It appears to be about 60 miles offshore as of 11:30 PST. We'll probably get steady rain from here on out and the winds will gradually increase. Good luck and BE SAFE! Keep us updated on what you're experiencing.
Reed
Thanks Reed, you are my hero!
I was very pleased to see that you answered Marlies's comments..My son is the other half of the honeymoon couple, "Kristie and Blaine" I also am very pleased that your group is there to record this storm, so that the world can see..not to mention the data that you are collecting for future study. You guys are certainly among the best.
Your news is the only news we are getting in detail about this storm..Everything in our corner of the world is "East Coast News" Please keep the information comming. Thank you for letting us know our "Big Kids" are well.
Hey folks from all over the world who visit this blog, I've been listening to the local radio station for news on what's going on, and the government has just declared maximum alert, which means that locals who live in areas at risk must evacuate, they said John is slowing down which makes it even more dangerous... but don't worry about your people at the hotel, since one of the best places to be at, in a situation like this, is precisely at one of the major hotels in Los Cabos, they're all well equiped with backup generators, enough food and water for a long time and most of the staff usually stays at these hotels to help keep everything running.
Joel, Reed: looks like you really will get the eye right over you, good luck.
hi to all of you and thank you. I slept better knowing you were there. Kristy and Blaine are back in their rooms and they told me how you all helped to assure staff and vacationers that it was safe outside. You provided a huge service for all and I will be forever greatful. I will be following your site now that I know bout it and checking up on your progresses. The pictures and videos are amazing. You have combined gutz and brains and the results are so cool! Thanks again and be safe!
