I've been doing my research on this one and the information is incredible.
From what I've gathered so far, this quake has
Caused a 33 foot tsunami along the Japanese coastline that caused incredible damage, and up to an 8 foot tsunami in California, which swept 8 people out to sea.
Registered an 8.9 or (according to Japanese seismologists) 9.0.
Moved the Japanese coastline by 8 feet, and shifted the entire axis of the earth by about 4 inches (10cm).
Caused volcanic eruptions on the other side of the globe.
Registered over 250 aftershocks and foreshocks in the last 5 days with over 30 of them being stronger than 6.0.
has damaged or brought down the cooling systems on at least 3 nuclear power plants. From what I've heard, there are at least 4 reactors they are fighting to keep cool using last ditch resorts on at least one of them. One report I heard said that if they can keep them cool for the next 24 hours or so, they should begin to regain control, if not, they could be looking at a Chernobyl scenario, or something similar, if not worse.
Caused tens of billions of dollars of damage in Japan alone.
created a rift in the earth's crust 150 miles long, and 50 miles wide.
The Tsunami ranks in the top 5 of all time for size (from what I found, couldn't find an official list)
The more I look the more data I find, and it is all incredible. my prayers go out to everyone out there. The only thing to be glad about is that Japan has such strict building codes or it would be a total loss.
EDIT
According to this animation and my own math, the Tsunami traveled at an estimated 510mph
