I lived through this. It is the inspiration for the book "Night of the Twisters" ,I beleive that is the name. I remember it being called a rare event, when I was growing up. The system was said to sit over our town for a long time. They said that the tornadoes took weird turns. What I remeber was people came from all over the world to investigate this event.

I remember the human side of this event. Several dead, we had no electricity for almost a week. No running water for a while as well. My parents split up several weeks later. Tough deal.

My question is, was there any interesting information on this event?? Destoyed a big chunk of town. Was it a rare event like I remember or a normal night of twisters?

I'm glad you made it through, Husker, though I'm sorry to hear your parents marriage didn't survive the aftermath.

This night was anything but 'usual' in any respect. Seven tornadoes in less than 3 hrs - and one an F4 - in an urban area is exceptional.
I've attached a few links I think covers a few different aspects, such as an engineering study of the types of damage on different types of structurs, the NWS archives, which have some terrific photos attached and a link that includes what it was like for the kids (before, during and after).

NWS link:

Photo from the above link.

The Engingeering Analysis:

And, a link to "The Real Night of the Twisters."

Let us know if you find any other info that you think would be of interest here, Husker. Good thread!

Trying to find a good synopsis/analysis for this event.
Here's one clue as to the intensity of the conditions:

By 18z it looked like there was already a strong moisture return.

I would assume storm relative helicity was high, based on surface/500mb winds.

reference:
weather graphics If anyone can fill in the blanks with the rest of the data feel free to post.

I remember the night of the Grand Island Tornado. Watching the severe weather coverage on TV. That storm just sat over Grand Island for hours. A former boss of mine lost his house in that outbreak.

1980 was a quite the wild severe storm season in Nebraska. A week or so before the Grand Island storm we had a severe thunderstorm take down a commuter plane just west of Omaha in rural Douglas county.

A week or so after the Grand Island storm, one night we had long night of severe weather in Omaha where 3 severe storms followed each other. Lots of damage, mainly to trees and power lines. That was the first time I have ever seen blue tinted lightning. Wish I photographed lightning back then. That was a wild storm.
