Buy a camcorder with 'steady shot' and be sure that you can download your videos from the cam to your computer. HD really isn't all that necessary.

I'm actually in the same boat as you at the moment, I'm looking for a camcorder, I like the look of the Sony's HDR-XR105, or the HDR-CX105.

This sony camcorders dont have a optical stabilisator. Panasonic have it. I dont know with camcorder will be good to record in low light.

Most lower end camcorders come with auto-focus...Manual focus comes in handy when you are in a car and your hand is jerking around a lot...Comes in handy.

I'll buy this camcorder:
Sony HDR-CX105
It have very good quality in good light and good qality in low light. But its CMOS so will be problem with filming lighting strikes (rolling shutter)

I love Sony (although I don't own one as of now), but I've heard great things about them...Haven't tried out JVC though. I'll be sure to let you know if I run into anyone who has one

The Sound quality isn't as good as a Canon HF200, but as you said, got a great picture!

Consider the HDR-XR105, its basically the same camera but got a 80GB hard drive.
