Chasing suits me perfectly, I love to drive / travel. Know lots of road food places that are actually pretty good. Already used to the long hours and little sleep.
All for the "CHANCE" to see mother nature in action.
Count me in!

I was in a hurricane (Hugo living in Fort Mill, SC near Charlotte, NC) and after that, I wanted to be in another one. I remember getting mad because Andrew didn't come down the path of Hugo. I've also always wanted to see a tornado because I missed seeing one during Hugo.
I found out about chasers and I always wanted to chase, and actually doing a chase makes me want to do it again....and again...
I really hope I find some money to come out to the plains in 2010.
I also like snow, and I see quite a bit of that in State College.
I also would love to live in Oklahoma City because of one notorious fact about it: One of the most tornado prone cities in the world (if not #1).
I never knew about people that chase and quit. I know about inexperienced yahoos, but not one-time chasers.
I knew about the boring part of chasing and prepared for it, but that didn't stop me. I live in State College, and it takes me almost 2 days to get to the Oklahoma border from Rock Hill, SC, but that doesn't stop me.

Trust me, you would not have wanted Andrew to have hit South Carolina. A category 5 is not something to hope comes your way. I think as a chaser, I would gladly have a category 5 steer away from land than have it hit my town and destroy my belongings just so I could get footage of it.

Oh I so want to get into this one but alas discretion is the better part of valor! At my age a couple of "wow's" and an "oh my" is about as excited as I get. Besides I'm afraid that if I jump up and down very much I'll fall and break a hip.
Merry Christmas EVERYBODY !

I was younger then, and Hugo was a Cat 4 when it hit Charleston, SC, but barely a Cat 1 when it ran over us, so I figured that a 5 running our way was no biggie.
I've thought about hurricane chasing, but it's a different beast as you're trying to get into something that local officials may not even let you get near (mandatory evacuations), you have to plan where you're going to stay, find a real sturdy shelter, and hope you don't lose your car in the storm (or your life). Might as well drive into a tornado, but hurricane chasing is doable and I may do it in the future, but I'll be prepared in a different way than with tornado chasing.
Also, Merry Christmas to Texas storm chasers. You're getting a chase op. today.

I knew Hugo was a category 4 at landfall. I'm just saying Andrew would have been far worse for South Carolina.
As for hurricane chasing, getting footage is about all you can do. You can still gather data, but doing so in a major hurricane can be a difficult task.
