Slingshot a 'probe' into ...... 2 Weeks, 1 Day ago Karma: 2
It seems that everyone gets close to a tornado nowadays. Maybe too close. But I was thinking about using a 'slingshot', off of a long flatbed truck, to put the 'probe' into a tornado. Have the 'probe' ready and just pull up a couple hundred yards from the beast and pull the lever. I've seen a slingshot that can launch a 15lb projectile that far.
Any suggestions?

Well as long as it went into the inflow reign. Its possible, maybe difficult but easier then drop’n them on the ground in front of one If you wanted an airborne probe use a time or remote opened parshoot

you could even use a compressed air "cannon"

Yes. Compressed air cannon. It probably goes farther. Could you use some 'handheld' weather stations? Some have memory. And you would need a GPS to find your 'weather equipment tube'.

The "cannon" idea is something I have been building and designing for 2 years... so far I have got a 4" hi density foam shell to travel over 300 yards

The biggest problem I have ran into is the re load time… take forever to fill a 5 gallon tank to 110psi….
But I guess I could hook up to a CO2 tank and a pressure shut off switch

this idea actually sounds cool to me! i have used a slingshot to launch a wire antenna for ham radio over tree limbs for the annual ham radio field day event, so if it can be done with that dont see why it cant be done with a probe of some sort just might be a winter project.

I went to Google and put in "slingshot flatbed truck" and found nothing. I don't think this has ever been done (or at least published).
I feel optomistic about getting this done. Imagine.... throwing a 'probe'(or several) into a tornado.
