@SST The "Chase Gear" thread has anything and EVERYTHING you could possibly need and ideas you hadn't thought about.
In the meantime here is a thread of my storm chase / emergency response vehicle buildout:

@ski3272
How serious are you? I'm going to be blunt on this one because I'm getting crotchety in my old age but here is a checklist that I have developed:
Have a camera and a tank of gas: Moron
Add CB / WX radio: curious bordering on wannabe
Add Scanner & Skywarn: wannabe
Add a REAL weather class or ACTUALLY study some of Tim Vasquez many lay person WX books like Chasing Handbook or Severe Weather Forecasting: This is the line you cross where I start taking you seriously. The line of demarcation is EDUCATION!
Add HAM radio: A chaser that cares enough to know "WHY WE CHASE"
Add First Aid CPR CERT EMT: Someone prepared for the aftermath.
Please note that video is nowhere on the list as crossing that line in no way indicates how proficient you have become at chasing storms only that you think you are good enough to actually catch what you are stalking.
1-2-3 rely on luck
4 is studying their prey and is putting forth the effort.
5-6 is not just concerned with themselves
Where do you fit in? For those that don't know me reading this post alone you will think I am an arrogant jerk. While that may be true to an extent please read this ENTIRE forum before you comment on my line in the sand. I started this forum a LONG time ago and it is the foundation upon which several chasers have gone from skywatcher to professional storm chaser. It's not about the toys you own, it IS about the knowledge you have and how you apply it. Learn FIRST buy stuff later. Chase often and for the right reason and do so safely!

Re the above post: I can personally attest to Keith's jerkdom.
That said, he's spot-on in his crotchety old man rant.
I'm seeing an upturn in new members of late, and while that's a great thing for TVN, it's highly concerning to me when I've interacted with many who are labeling themselves 'chasers' either in their nicknames or outright and have observed they know next to nothing about severe weather behavior, let alone where to find the very basic information necessary regarding forecasts/outlooks - right down to the forecasts for their own local area.
Frightening, really.
So, as Keith (WX4EMT)states: You have to LEARN it BEFORE you can OWN it.
Though that does sound arrogant or elitist, it's the simple truth. Your safety (and other's) depends on it.
It might sound like a long, hard process, but it really isn't, as during the learning stage, you'll be meeting fantastic people genuinely willing to help if you show you're truly willing to put in the effort, not to mention the extent to interesting information you'll uncover re storm dynamics.

Well I appreciate your honesty people lives are at stake and you wouldnt be doing the right think if you weren't honest. Well I have all accept the Ham radio eqipment and I am actually looking into that right now and getting my license as well. So to answer your question I have a camera, full tank of gas, wx radio and scanner, I have taken several classes in both spotting, sever weather and FEMA, I have the first aid, first responder, cpr, aed etc. So add me to the list where you would like but everyone must start some place. I would like a list if possible of great books to study from as well as websites etc. I would also like to know of any "affordable" equipment I could use to collect basic data from my vehicle. I am willing to drill holes or whatever it takes to saftley secure my equipment as well.
Once again I DO appreciate your straight forward Q&A I to feel the same way as you when it comes to satfey. If you would like I could give you my email i fyou would like to talk as well or even my number if need be. thank you for your knowledge and time and I will await your responce. SKI

ski,
I recommend you take some time to peruse this Forum; particularly the Meteorology Classroom, Severe Wx Discussion & General Wx Discussion Categories.
You'll find plenty of info there re 'great books' and scads of links to informative websites.
Re your request for equipment, you're currently posting in the "Chase Gear" thread. Perhaps take the time to read through it?
