I would look at the GFS, but Netweather's charts seem to be down..., but the models earlier did suggest a intensification on this system, now looking at the low 960's, with Gales expected.

Rain is due to start in the west in the morning, and pass through, affecting the Rest of the UK by the afternoon.

While you are out chasing please remember to report severe weather. The criteria is in the Spotters Guide.

Since the pros are busy doing "PRO" stuff we need to remember to REPORT our findings. Public safety is paramount so we, the "Recreational Chasers" need to take this up as our own cause. Don't forget confirmation helps NWS make better forcasts.

If you chase you should join e-Spotter for quick easy reporting straight to NWS.

When ever there are storms at night I run to the computer and look up the radar, and my family says "Sean, you are such a nerd!"... (OK, maybe not those exact words, but you get the point. :P ) Then I yell back "Hey, I could be saving your life!", then they laugh and go back to bed.

personally i wouldn't get a "new" car for chasing because of the likely hood of hail, but if you must, GMs equinox/vue platform is great, the 2.2 I4 is a great little engine and the equinox is available with 4wd. If you aren't going to buy new i would highly recommend a car like the Isuzu rodeo, toyota 4runner, or mitsubishi montero for storm chasing, they all have 4wd, decent gas mileage, lots of space for gear, are super cheap to maintain and repair, plus these cars are much more versatile and modifiable then newer crossovers/mid sized suvs...

in season two the scout team was driving a montero and they drove it into a ditch, it was because they had a crappy tires not the vehicle itself, whatever you get the best 4wd drive isn't going to help without good tires, I highly recomend a tire like BFG's All Terrain KOs because they are acceptable both on the road and on slick clay side roads

I remember the night of the Grand Island Tornado. Watching the severe weather coverage on TV. That storm just sat over Grand Island for hours. A former boss of mine lost his house in that outbreak.

1980 was a quite the wild severe storm season in Nebraska. A week or so before the Grand Island storm we had a severe thunderstorm take down a commuter plane just west of Omaha in rural Douglas county.

A week or so after the Grand Island storm, one night we had long night of severe weather in Omaha where 3 severe storms followed each other. Lots of damage, mainly to trees and power lines. That was the first time I have ever seen blue tinted lightning. Wish I photographed lightning back then. That was a wild storm.

Our first chase was on june 1st so we werent out chasing that storm :( but we hope that we are able to get out more this year. As for Xenia it has just been incredibly unlucky and it could happen anywhere, on the contrary 1974, and 2000 an F5 and F4. I don't know especially since the Shawnee indians that lived there refer to that area as "place of the devil winds" or "land of the crazy winds", unlucky or something more? There are also local records that indicate there have been around 20 tornadoes in Greene county in the last 150 years or so.

Current thinking is east-central TX. I think GFS is underestimating the amount of convective energy. NAM agrees with me but places it further south so the best estimate is probably the southeast coast of TX. It's not really anything worth going crazy about.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet...

Possible tornados in the Netherlands

A level 1 was issued for Denmark, NW Germany and Netherlands mainly for tornadoes

http://www.onweer-online.nl/images/userimages/users/jan/20091118155045.jpg

Satellite data shows a dry intrusion overspreading the main precipitation zone of the surface low with a strongly forced convective rainband seen on radar captures. This rainband is travelling on the back side of the large stratiform precipitation system, in proximity to the surface cold front. Even though models resolve only very little instability, it seems that vigorous forcing compensated for this factor. Even though no lightning is observed with this line, it may be well organised and pose a risk of severe threat. Very strong wind shear at lower levels ( over 15 m/s), SREH values exceeding 300 J/kg in 0-1 km layer and humid airmass present over the region are suggestive of a slight chance of tornado. Apart from tornadoes, severe wind gusts might occur, even though these are mostly linked to the intense pressure gradients of the low instead of the convective processes. Marginal Level 1 is introduced for the regions where a convective rainband is predicted to make a "landfall". The threat should decrease after it crossed Denmark, after 15 UTC.

What do you suggest to use as learning material to study for my Technician Class license?

And what is the total cost of the testing and licensing?

Total cost to take the test is about 10 bucks and the license is good for 10 years and free to renew.

I like the "Now You're Talking" book from ARRL but there are several out there.

This is VERY important, download the question pool. YES the FCC publishes the questions! HOW COULD YOU FAIL? Then Highlight the CORRECT answer to each question. Read the book! Then, every day, read the question and the CORRECT answer ONLY! NEVER read any of the distractor answers only the correct answer. Do that for about a week and then go take the test. when you read the test question the correct answer just jumps out at you and you won't reckognize any of the distractors. You can't loose!

Yes, Mike Rowe is funny, and I enjoy him as a program moderator. He is fantastic as the voice of Deadliest Catch. As for him not doing After The Catch anymore, he probably had a schedule conflict as he was doing Ford commercials, and narrating a series on Life in the Oceans. If there is not schedule conflict, he may possibly do After The Catch for the current season when it has been completed.

Would I like to see him doing After the Storm? If they could have one? Yes! It would also be interesting to see how the different chase team leaders interact, and trade close calls, etc.

In that vein, I think that so far, Reed has done a lot of very good science this past chase season. Next Sunday we get to see Reed putting probes into a tornado via a remote control aircraft. I wonder what Josh would have to say after seeing Reed's work this past season.

Would rather have seen some fantastic Shelf Clouds like that than get battered by the rain and wind here.
Something unwordly about those images but never tire of seeing them. And a nice Bolt thrown in for good measure.
First of many more storms to come for you im sure so looking forward to seeing lots more pics.

And looking forward to coming over in Feb even more :-))

I was just sorting all my photos and footage from this past year, and I dug up some photos of one of last year's wildfires here in Cali. Still can't believe I lost all the footage (accidentally!), but at least I still have some up close photos of the blaze. So I threw a bunch of photos together, shot some footage the other day of the re-growth in the burn area, and here we go!

They have found anti matter in lightening!! B)

You just have to read this. Designed to scan the heavens thousands to billions of light-years beyond the solar system for gamma rays, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has also picked up a shocking vibe from Earth. During its first 14 months of operation, the flying observatory has detected 17 gamma-ray flashes associated with terrestrial storms — and some of those flashes have contained a surprising signature of antimatter. I just had to share this with you guys! :-))

Last night as some of you know, 14 states in Brazil, and Paraguai, were afected by a blackout, it was believed that it was caused due to severe weather Here are some pictures:

The blue 'Xs' are the lightning strikes

The executive secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Márcio Zimmermann, said on Wednesday (11) that the blackout that left ten Brazilian states originated in the dark due to adverse weather conditions. At a news conference this morning, he said the problems occurred in three transmission lines, which receive power from the Itaipu hydroelectric plant (PR).

One morning I woke up to a blanket of snow on the ground and the roofs of the townhouse dorms across from mine, all the way up in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. A few hours later, the wind kicked up and the snow fall became heavier. Sadly, it ended not too long after that and melted away by the next day. I'll be posting more pictures throughout the winter!

What I woke up to:

Got out for a few hours today but I guess 'no news' means 'fair weather'. Nothing but rain with IDA and my heaviest gust was about 32mph.
I should have just stayed at home. IDA didn't amount to much today.
But I tried. I think I turned my camera on 1(one) time. The rest was driving.
Sorry guys.... no video from Atlanta. :S
Still watching the radar. Looks like some wrap around comming tonite.

I'm sorry but these are only the storms of nort-west Italy, because I can't publicate the other photos for copyright matters.

I'd like to conclude with a very impressive photo: this is the damage done by a very very strong downburst (200km/h winds). It really seems like tornado damage.

Well, we've got some serious contradictions going on with Ida right now.

First of all, the system is merging with a cold front and becoming extratropical as it heads towards the Gulf Coast. Earlier today, she was downgraded to a 60 kts (70 mph) Tropical Storm.

Now for the strange stuff.

#1 - Satellite vs. Radar presentation

Here are images of Ida currently in visible, AVN, and water vapor respectively.
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t2/vis.jpg
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t2/avn.jpg
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t2/wv.jpg

Now here's the NEXRAD radar presentation.
http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=pan&prevzoom=zoom&num=0&frame=0&delay=15&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&ID=MOB&type=N0Z&showstorms=0&lat=30.69994926&lon=-88.04679871&label=Mobile,%20AL&map.x=400&map.y=240&scale=1.000&centerx=400&centery=240&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&lerror=20&num_stns_min=2&num_stns_max=9999&avg_off=9999&smooth=1
(EDIT: Had to link it in order for it to work)

In the NEXRAD presentation, there is obviously some kind of eye present, as well as tight banding.

#2 - On top of all that, the Hurricane Hunters have apparently found winds of 70 kts (80 mph) and pressure of 990 mbar at the surface. Current advisory intensity, as of 12pm CST, is 60 kts (70 mph) and 992 mbar.

If I'm not mistaken, I think these are signs of an extratropical system - different at varying levels of the atmosphere.

According to Discovery it is an 8 episode run with the last airing on Dec 8th. Not sure if there will be any special episodes after showing extra footage etc. or if that will be saved for the DVD. Either way you are guaranteed another 4 episodes and based on following on here in the spring, some of the best footage is yet to come.

We also have cases of tornadoes in Uruguay, cienficamente verified by local studies as well as internationally, Ms. Altinger (PhD in atmospheric sciences from Argentina), clothing after over 30 years of work collecting data of occurrence of tornadoes in Argentina, a map shows areas where more likely to develop violent phenomena associated with strong thunderstorms (down or tornadoes).
In Uruguay, according to their studies can be up to the category EF3, and we have studied cases where such category has exceeded (21 st April 1970, Fray Marcos, Department of Florida, with a category EF4).

I'm a meteorologist and I work alongside my work, to study everything related to storms and phenomena (hail, strong straight-line winds or tornadoes, high rates of precipitation, etc).

So far I have 4 studios tornadoes since 2001 and I am processing the information from the last according to witnesses and press occurred, failure to perform field work, a tornado over the village of Cerro Chato on October 30, 2009, department Florida.

From now invite you to meet some of my work in the following blogs:

Like Reed said, there is room for everyone on the road, I couldn't believe he threatened Reed's team! Reed I love you, you always stay positive no matter what, and don't let anyone else tell u otherwise!!! If Joel won't drive y'all there are a million people willing to take his place!!! REED IS THE KING because he just wants to chase tornadoes, help science advance, teach others and show his footage. :)

I do seem to recall some guys with some outfit called TVN or something like that had a probe intercept just a few episodes back on some weird show called Storm Chasers...
There was a lot of excitement; hooting and hollering, stuff like that - especially by some guy named Reed, who made sure the probe was functional before 'backing up.'

"Is it recording?"

Ayup. It was. :)

i do believe the ef scale and even the f scale method of rating the strength of a tornado was premature and should be looked into again if not updated by the powers to be. if tornadoes are rated primarly by damage to structure estimates only i believe we have had many more strong to violent tornadoes in this country since if they occur in an open field, there is little to no strucure damage they recieve a much lower rating than they should. however until we can get an administration in the white house that actually has an iq... and whishes to make changes for the better this will never be changed. the current administration has no concern for updating this rating system or anything for that matter unless it makes their wallets grow.

good luck in your chasing pursuits and stay safe! :)

I saw what Scott Currens used on/over his windshield on the back of a pickup this morning - at least it looks very similar to what he uses - it's a truck platform that mounts behind a vehicle; steel frame and strong wire mesh. It runs the width of the bumper of a full size pickup.

What if the probes inside where sprayed with an expanding foam. So when it hardend it would fill in air voids and keep stuff in place. Then make the outside of the probe body coverd in air foils that would catch the winds up draft and suck it closer, or even up in the tornado.Like a drum that could roll at first, and the closer it got ,it may have a chance of going up? Lot of work just random thought.

God willing, I'll be out there faster than you can say potential vorticity advection.

I've gained more knowledge in Synoptics and Dynamics, so I should be able to forecast a little better this time around. I'm not guaranteeing more accurate results, but I will be able to understand and thus use more quantities in my forecasts.

Thanks for the point, but I did this to help the girl out. I suggest the book to everyone not familiar with meteorology since you'll get a better understanding of it yourself and thus improve your forecasting ability.

Hail storm batters Darling Downs

A slow-moving thunderstorm front has moved over Ipswich, west of Brisbane. The storms weakened on the southern Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley region, south-west of Brisbane. The Weather Bureau says the storms - which produced heavy rainfall and large hail - are moving slowly toward the coast.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc76yUST4ZA

Senior forecaster Brian Rollstone says the township of Allora was battered by hail on Thursday afternoon. The intensity is weakening now and it is starting to drift toward the east and by the time this all gets to Brisbane it will be even weaker, he said. I think there's thundery rain on the coast there, much weaker again, so all the storms started on the ranges on the Darling Downs and it is only just getting onto the coast strip. Local police Sergeant Bruce Willett says there have been no reports of damage.

We ended up with a wave of hail across us and if left a layer of white across the ground, probably large marble size, he said. And then we had another wave come over but it was only pea-sized so I spoke to the Clifton police officer before and he had an unconfirmed report from a fellow over at Killarney that they may have had some cricket ball-sized stuff this afternoon. Earlier the Bureau was warning of the chance of flash flooding.

Can a tornado be suffocated? Take the air out of it and add extreme heat maybe.

Heat actually fuels tornadoes so adding heat could make it stronger.

If you take the air away from the funnel, that could create subsidence and thus stability, but a tornado is sometimes more than just a column of rising air and sometimes has falling motions in it. Depends on where you want to take the air from and how you will do it.

In nature, tornadoes "suffocate" when cold air from the rear flank downdraft reaches the boundary between the warm sector of the storm (the inflow, which is an area of warm air that feeds the tornado), which causes an occlusion that blocks the warm air flow. From watching videos, though, this doesn't always weaken tornadoes (I may be wrong). In basic theory, though, it should.

Good luck manually cutting off a tornado's inflow, though.

This is a picture of the amazing supercell that lingered west of Fredricksburg, Iowa, on June 17, 2009. The storm was amazing and I thought it would have dropped a tornado at anytime, but due to the lack of shear only small funnels were seen. We experienced multiple regenerations of the wall cloud, along with 3/4"-1" hail. Sorry for the contrast, it was almost dark and taken around 9pm central time. http://www.tornadovideos.net/images/fbfiles/images/328__320x200_.JPG

I have some photos I should post of the western side of the wall cloud as it made its way through the Charles City area. We followed it along Hwy 18 until we got home in New Hampton. It spun up some small funnels, but like you said, nothing major. Great pic BTW!

Yup, I was hit by this storm front up in Basingstoke, (About 20 miles of where the tornado had taken place) so, I got no tornado. I made it to college at about 11am and got in before it started to tip it down. Very intense outside, but I was inside, concentrating on Physics. Went outside at lunch, and witnessed a fantastic Cumulousnimbus directly south and East. Great Structure on it, I wish I chased it, but couldn't exactly blag myself off of Physics ;)

Still looking for some Pictures :)

I received my Masters in Atm Science from NCSU in '07...you should enjoy the program there. Watch out for Lackmann's classes--they're killer! You will learn a whole lot as well, though, so they're worth the brain pain. ;)

Has Parker taken you on as a grad student? He was my best friend's advisor in his first year at State...she thought he was awesome. Good luck joining the team next year for Year 2 of VORTEX 2 :)

You could see the waves going back from the wall and meeting up with another wave coming in! that was pretty cool!

Were you afraid you would get knocked off the wall by a wave? The sound of the crashing waves and wind made it sound pretty scary! nice job!

It's hard for me to tell the exact model, but I've seen that a lot of guys are using Sony brand HD camcorders...something along the lines of this one: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HVR-HD1000U-Definition-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B0010T7J18/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1256610622&sr=8-1

Most the ones you see on the show are going to cost you at least a couple grand...The one above is one I've been looking at purchasing for a while now, and it's not quite as expensive as a lot of other top notch, professional HD camcorders on the market.

Hmm... I need to ask my friend at work if he wants to do a little "Ghost hunting". Would be an interesting project. Which I also kind of didn't mention, Ghost Hunting is another interest of mine. Finding this just kind of brings two things I like a lot together.

But I'll be honest too, being just driving through, I felt a little unsettled. The town itself its not threating, nice town. People just doing their thing, everyone seem friendly. Its just I felt like that forboading feeling like something is out there waiting kind of thing.

I told the same friend that I think it may have been residual energy from that day. I also feel I am ... open to those kind of things. Not physic! Noooo! Just ... "open" to other senses.

Maybe in another forum I'll tell you all about my experience in Waverly Hill Santorium ;).

But I am trying to get a friend to go with me to go there. I'll take some equipment with me see what we can pick up. I also have another friend from work who graduated from that high school as well I've been talking too. He told me he is going to talk to a local Don Mays I think his name was, which I know I have seen his name before. I think I've seen his name on the April 3, 1974 site. Which if I get to talk to him, will be quite amazing!

.> .... The plot thickens!

I have never even attempted to photograph lightning, but you look like you had a successful night.

Hey Racinfan, I figured out how to post pictures! :)
I am not a moderator, but I think I can help.

Ok, here is how you do it. When you are posting a comment there are those little icons you can click to do things. Well the very right one is for hyper links. Then, one to the left is where you add pictures! Just type in a size (What I would do is just fiddle around until I get it to be a size that looks good) and the URL. Then all you have to do is click insert.

Good luck!

I can't remember the last time I have been able to see the bottom of the north sask river in the middle. its low enough to walk across. We are looking at another drought. In the 1800s it dried up i'm hoping we are not going to see that again.

haha yeah....don't think that global warming was a big issue this summer for us in Minnesota, what with having 65 degrees pretty much every day. The only two days we had it above 90 came about a month within each other. We got moderately intense sever thunderstorms on those days. But I want more. Hopefully El Nino sticks around after winter. It's kind of tough to wish though when a huge chunk of MN is farmland, and being a farmer's daughter it's kind of bad of me to be saying this. I want to see extreme weather, but at the same time I obviously want my dad to be successful....what to do?

Earlier, I saw that a new storm was developing in the West, and is forecast to dump quite a lot of snow in the Northern Plains. I think it may be strong enough to produce severe storms as well. The system in the south is producing heavy rain, and severe weather (tomorrow) in the Ohio Valley and Central Great Lakes areas. The storm is bringing in much colder weather as well. How's my analysis? I wonder if it will pan out.

It really didn`t go throught the town of Burrton but it hit a house east of town that killed the little boy. That tornado was a monster.
The tornado hit the East side of Hesston along I-135
This tornado was an EF5

Late yesterday evening severe thunder storms rolled over the area of North Texas and Southern Oaklahoma. The storms produced damaging winds and hail up to 2.5 in. The storms also produced some cirrculation. Cell-MO was the first cell to produce cirrculation. While it died down quickly many other cirrculations popped up during the night.

Sorry for the non-informative information..I just didn't have many other things to iclude. I was watching storm chasers while this was happening. Though below you will see a photo i took using the Grlevel 3 radar. ( Free-Trial) Oh Ya :P

Interesting point NC. I also think they need to have a meteorologist from doghouse in the TIV so walkie communication is not a factor in missing tornadoes or, they need a new communications medium. I'm gonna take the rest of the episodes in stride as humor whenever TIV has issues. Thanks to GGM7 for keeping everyone hooked up.

It had both...the winds were up to 80 or 85 km/h and it also left big hail in some zones, but actually, just small hail over my house (sadly hehehe :-D ...)

a convective storm line generated almost 5 supercells in less than 300 km, and in the northern-center, other 3 supercells, but these ones were light compared with the one that hit Buenos Aires...

At least there are a lot of people on TVN (including myself) who are not old enough to drink. But if they aren't old enough to drink then they are probably not old enough to go to the great plains to meet a bunch of people they have never seen before. I guess my optimism failed. :-))

A level 2 was issued for parts of the central Mediterranean mainly for large hail, severe wind gusts, excessive rainfall and tornadoes.

http://www.onweer-online.nl/images/userimages/users/jan/20091022180241.jpg

The overall set-up unfolds as forecast. Latest satellite and radar data show organized and severe thunderstorms, developing over the Tyrrhenian Sea and S-Italy. 12 UTC sounding data of LIBR Brindisi reveals an LCL height of 650m AGL, MUCAPE in excess of 2000 J/kg and 0-3km SRH just shy below 300 m^2/s^2. Surface dewpoints in this area reside in the lower twenties, so a sheared and moist inflow into the approaching thunderstorms ought to yield a favorable environment for rotation at mid-/ low-levels. Numerous severe thunderstorms affect south-central and southern Italy during the afternoon hours and the activity spreads east ortheastwards over the Adriatic Sea.

Rapidly strengthening depression just north of the Balearic Islands is on track with the cold front just having passed the eastern part of those Islands. Prefrontal convergence zone has organized into an active MCS, with new convection firing along the successive cold front. This activity keeps going eastwards with a slight weakening trend possible due to a temporarily lull in shear strength and instability. Nevertheless, severe to damaging wind gusts, isolated tornadoes and large hail are possible over Sardinia during the passage of the cold front.

... 21 UTC onwards over the Tyrrhenian Sea, parts of Sicily and Italy ...

Some minor uncertainties remain after analyzing the latest data as far south the convection is able to evolve. The strengthening depression over the western Mediterranean slowed down somewhat in the past few runs and hence, WAA still affects Sicily and S-Italy until 06 UTC. However, negative tilted upper trough overspreads that LL airmass with impressive forcing and cooler mid-level air. In addition, eastward advancing surface cold front and very moist prefrontal airmass also assist in enough LL forcing, so we therefore decided to went further south compared to the main model solution, also highlighting Sicily and parts of the western orthern Ionian Sea.
Otherwise, a diffluent upper streamline pattern atop of the eastward moving cold front and moderate to high CAPE values all support a rapid and potential explosive development of thunderstorms over the Tyrrhenian Sea, probably as early as 21 UTC. Magnitude of shear and instability and favorable overlap along the front point to the complete facet of severe, including strong tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and very large hail.

The level 2 along the NE coast of the Adriatic Sea was canceled. Numerous more short-lived training MCSs were present, but too short-lived for a serious flash flood risk. A new MCS just evolved over parts of Croatia, so localized heavy rainfall with flooding is still possible but not widespread enough for a level 2.
The level-2 along the eastern Adriatic Sea is still present due to the prolonged period of influx of a very moist and unstable airmass. Repeated re-development of convection-probably in form of backbuilding MCSes- pose a serious flash flood risk.
