Some of the richest gulf moisture of the year is making it's way northbound into Texas, and the result is convective thunderstorm development. It is some of the first severe weather in the area for 2010. Dewpoints in the upper 50's are creating just enough CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) to trigger convection with the help of an upper level low centered over NE New Mexico. The Storm Prediction Center has recently issued a severe thunderstorm watch and we have already seen a severe warned storm to the NW of the DFW metroplex. This is the beginning of what is anticipated to be a very active season!

(May 16th, 2011) Viewers tuning in to watch Jay Leno tonight will be met with some more-serious subject matter than usual. After appearing last fall to promote Storm Chasers on Discovery, Reed will be Jay's guest once again this evening, this time advocating for severe weather preparedness and awareness, as well as to urge continued support for recovery efforts in the wake of the overwhelming month of deadly tornadoes parts of the U.S. endured during April. Reed and crew experienced these outbreaks first-hand, beginning withIowa on the 9th, then Mississippi (15th), Missouri and Illinois(19th), then finally with the modern-day Super Outbreakin Mississippi and Alabama on April 27th; they then spent several days afterward assisting with relief efforts in and around Tuscaloosa. -- Reed is pictured above with members of Alabama Task Force 1, an elite search and rescue unit in Tuscaloosa after the city was devastated by an EF-4 tornado on the 27th. The timing for this renewed awareness couldn't be better, as the middle to latter part of this week into next week look to become especially active once again, with tornadoes possible across portions of the central and southern Great Plains. Well, he had a lot of things to cover in a short time. Solid work there Reed on letting the nation know we still have many of our own still to care for.
Another round of wintry weather is anticipated across portions of Kansas, New Mexico,Oklahoma, north Texas and points eastward into the mid-Mississippi Valley region, as another arctic airmass will invade beginning tomorrow. A broad area of low pressure is expected to develop over north-central Texas tomorrow morning, and will move generally eastward. This will encourage the flow of moisture into the southern Plains and mid-South, and will be the fuel necessary for precipitation. Freezing rain, sleet and eventually heavy snow are expected as this moisture combines with the arctic airmass. Significant snow accumulations are possible across this entire region, and locally heavy snow should result in ~12" or more for some areas, althoughforecast models are not quite in agreement on location at this time. Be sure to monitor local weather service and media for the latest weather statements for your area. TVN is currently marooned on a high-rise parking garage in Waveland, Mississippi, waiting for Isaac's storm surge waters to recede to a point which would allow escape. Above is their latest video showing what Reed estimates to be a 10+ foot storm surge pounding their location, accompanied by the most intense hurricane-force winds of the storm.
