Here are pictures of a wildfire that led to the evacuation of over 800 homes in the Boulder, CO area! Winds gusting over 80 mph fueled the fire, as a downslope mountain wind storm dominated the area. Wind storms such as these are common near the Colorado Front Range, and are typically caused as gravity waves are deflected toward the surface from strong northwesterly flow passing over the mountain ridges. Winds can gust over 100 mph in the strongest storms, and out of control wildfires can become a serious problem!
